1 General safety instructions
The servomotors correspond to the harmonized standards of the series
EN 60034-1, EN 60034-6, EN 60034-9 and EN 60204-1.
The three-phase servomotors 1FT6 conform to the following:
73/23/EEC Low Voltage Directive.
Version conforming to UL regulations upon request.
Versions conforming to UL regulations are identified by "UR" on the rating plate.
Ensure that your end product conforms to all currently valid legal requirements.
Follow the compulsory national, local and installation-specific regulations!
Three-phase servomotors are exclusively intended for fitting in another machine or
machines.
These motors must not be brought into use until it has been established that the end
product conforms to the currently valid directives.
The operating manual is valid in conjunction with the SIEMENS project planning guide
"Three-phase motors for feed and main spindle drives" for the motors concerned.
All safety instructions must be observed during the transport, storage, assembly,
disassembly and operation of the servomotors!
Failure to observe the instructions can lead to serious personal injuries or property damage.
The motors’ rotors contain permanent magnets with high magnetic flux densities which exert
strong attractive forces on ferromagnetic bodies.
People fitted with a heart pacemaker are at risk in the vicinity of a disassembled rotor. Data
stored on electronic and magnetic data media may be destroyed.
It is forbidden to use these servomotors in areas at risk of explosion, unless this is expressly
authorized.
Thermal hazards
The surface temperatures of the motors may exceed 140 °C (284 °F).
Do not touch hot surfaces!
Temperature-sensitive components (electric lines, electronic components) must not touch
hot surfaces.
Overheating in the motors may destroy the windings and bearings, and demagnetize the
permanent magnets.
Only operate the motors with effective temperature control.
Intended Usage
Usage for the intended purpose includes observing all the specifications in the operating
manual and the project planning guide for servomotors.

2 Product information
2.1 Product description
Motors of series 1FT6 are permanent magnet excited, three-phase synchronous motors
(three-phase servomotors) for operating with pulse-width-modulation inverters according to
the sinusoidal current principle.
The motors have been designed for feed drives in machine tools, drive units in production
machines, and for drives in general mechanical engineering.
2.2 Scope of Delivery
The drive systems are put together individually. Immediately upon receipt of delivery, check
whether the scope of delivery corresponds with the consignment notes. SIEMENS cannot
accept any liability for any shortages or deficiencies reported at a later date.
Complaint instructions:
- Report detectable transport damage immediately to the carrier.
- Report detectable defects / incomplete delivery immediately to the responsible
SIEMENS representative.
The operating manual is part of the scope of delivery and shall therefore be kept in an
accessible place.
As the delivery includes a separate type plate, the motor data must also be kept on or near
the machine or system.

4 Installation, Assembly
4.1 Transport, Storage
Use suitable lifting tackle for transport and assembly.
Lifting tackle as per 98/37/EU Directive for Machines, Appendix I.
The motors weigh up to 300 kg. For exact details, please refer to the catalog or dimensional
sheet.
WARNING
Danger during lifting and transporting procedures!
Improper handling, unsuitable or defective devices, tools etc. can
cause injuries and/or property damage.
Lifting devices, ground conveyors and lifting tackle must correspond
to the valid regulations.
CAUTION
A lifting beam (Fig. 2) is to be used for lifting and transporting the motors by
the eyebolts supplied (according to DIN 580).
Note the following:
- Screw the eyebolt in completely and hand-tight (ca. 8 Nm), do not
overtighten.
- Do not remove the pressboard washer
- Do not use any eyebolts which are deformed or damaged.
- Stresses transverse to the plane of the rings are not allowed.
If the load exceeds the weight stated in DIN 580, for example as a result
of additional mounted parts or unspecified load conditions, then the
eyebolts supplied must be replaced by suitable/special lifting eyes (e.g.
RUD-Starpoint), or other methods of lifting must be used.

Observe the transport regulations applying in the country/countries concerned.
Store in a dry, low-dust and low-vibration place (veff < 0.2 mms-1).
4.2 Installation

- Take note of and observe the information on the rating plate and warning and informative
notices on the motor.
- Observe the permitted transverse and axial forces (see project planning instructions).
Axial forces are not permitted on motors with an integrated or fitted brake.
- A minimum transverse force is required for a reinforced bearing arrangement. This
bearing arrangement is not suitable for a coupling drive, this requires a simple bearing
arrangement.
- Check for compliance with the conditions (e.g. temperature, site altitude) at the assembly
site (see 3.2).
- It is forbidden to use them in areas at risk of explosion.
- Remove all anti-corrosion agents from the shaft end (use commercially available
solvent).
- After a lengthy period of storage, check the insulation resistance (dry the winding if the
values are < 1 kΩper volt of rated voltage).
- Tighten the flanges equally, avoid distortions when tightening the fixing screws. Tighten
diagonally! Use hexagon socket head cap screws, strength class at least 8.8.

- In the case of a vertical installation with the shaft end at the top, ensure that no fluid can
penetrate into the upper bearing. Attach splash protection if necessary.
- If the lifting eye-bolts have been screwed in, they can be removed after the motor has
been installed.
- Turn the output elements by hand. If grinding noises occur, eliminate the cause or
contact the manufacturer.
Emitted vibrations
Emitted vibrations response of the system is affected by the output elements, the mounting
conditions, the alignment, the installation and the effects of external vibrations. This may
cause a modification of the motor vibration values.
For the motor to work perfectly and the bearings to have a long service life, then, in the fitted
state, the emitted vibrations must not exceed the following values:

If necessary, the rotor, together with the drive element, must be completely balanced.
Balancing
As standard, motors with a keyway are dynamically balanced by the manufacturer with a half
key.
When balancing with a half key, uneven running may occur in output elements in which the
relation of the hub length l to the shaft length lw< 0,8, and in which speeds are > 1500 rpm.
A re-balancing procedure may be necessary. For example, the part of the key (B) protruding
out of the output element and over the contour of the shaft may have to be cut off.
NOTICE
Take note of the information indicating the type of balancing on the rating plate!
- H = balancing with half key
- F = balancing with full key
The balancing method is only identified if a keyway is present. When the output
element is assembled, be careful to use the correct balancing method for the
motor rotor.

Output elements
Suitable devices should always be used to push on or pull off the output elements (e.g. the
coupling, gear wheel, pulley (Fig. 5).
- Use the tapped hole in the shaft end.
- Heat up the output elements if necessary.
- Use a shim to protect the centering in the shaft end when pulling output elements off.
- If necessary, fully balance the motor with the output elements according to ISO1940

NOTICE
Do not strike the shaft or bearings of the motors.
Do not exceed the permissible axial and radial forces on the shaft end stated in
the configuration specification.

4.3 Cooling
Self-cooling
The rated data only apply if the ambient temperature does not exceed 40 °C (104 °F) as a
result of the installation conditions.
Recommendation:
Maintain a gap of 100 mm to adjacent components on at least three sides in order to allow
waste heat to dissipate.
Forced ventilation

output elements must be applied.
NOTE
The cover plates on the non-drive end shield which are removed in order to
screw the motor tight must be refitted before the motor is started up!

Cooling water flow temperature max. 35 °C (95 °F)
To prevent condensation in the motor, the temperature of the cooling water must be equal
to or greater than the dew-point temperature of the environment.
Coolant normal motor cooling water
A corrosion inhibitor (e.g. Tyfocor, maximum 25%) is recommended.
If the cooling circuit has been filled and frost can be expected, a commercially available
antifreeze agent must be added. Please refer to the manufacturer’s documentation for
usage and dosage (max. 25%). Do not mix different types of antifreeze!
5 Electrical Connection
5.1 Important instructions
Safety rules for working in electrical installations as per
EN 50110-1 (DIN VDE 0105-100):
- Always work with the equipment electrically dead.
- Isolate from electrical supply.
- Secure against switching on again.
- Check electrical deadness.
- Earth and short-circuit.
- Cover or cordon off adjacent parts which are electrically live.
- Release for work.
- Connect the PE conductor to .
Assembly requirements
DANGER
Electric shock hazard!
When the rotor is rotating, the motor terminals carry a voltage of
approx. 300 V.
Stop the motor before commencing any electrical work.
Only use trained, qualified personnel for assembly work on the
converter, terminal box and connector!
Observe the regulations for working in electrotechnical plants.
CAUTION
Warning of motor damage!
Connecting the motor directly to a three-phase power supply will destroy it.
Motors may only be driven with configured converters!
Ensure that the phase sequence is correct.
Encoder systems and temperature sensor contain electrostatically sensitive
components (ESD).
Do not touch the connections with your hands or tools which could be
electrostatically charged!
