Warnings/Cautions: This symbol is intended to alert the user to the presence of
important operating, maintenance or servicing instructions. Disregarding a warning
could result in patient and/or user injury as well as damage to equipment.
Electrical Shock Hazard Warning: This symbol is intended to alert the user to the
presence of electrical shock hazards. It is important to follow all instructions and special
procedures to avoid electrical shock to the operator, care provider and/or patient.

Device Information
Description of the Device
The Sizewise™ Air Transfer Device (ATD) is used to assist with lateral transfers and repositioning
anywhere in the hospital. It is radiolucent and artifact free so patients may remain on the mattress for all
ancillary procedures, including Diagnostic Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, MRI, or Radiation Therapy.
The Sizewise™ATD has a weight capacity of up to 1,200 lbs (544 kg); it is available in four different
widths to accommodate the body mass of the patient.
The Purpose of the Device
The purpose of the Sizewise™ ATD is to dramatically reduce back injuries to staff that are caused by
lateral transfers and repositioning. In addition, fewer staff members are required and a very comfortable
and safe transfer for the patient is provided.
Indications for Use After the patient is placed on the mattress and the air supply is activated, low
pressure air from the small air supply will inflate the mattress. At the same time the air is supporting the
patient, the air is escaping from the perforations in the underside of the mattress. The escaping air acts
as a lubricant to reduce friction, which facilitates effortless transfers. With less force needed to transfer
a patient, there is less physical effort and strain expended by caregivers.

Operating Instructions:
The Sizewise™ATD should be placed on the patient bed or stretcher prior to patient use. However, if
this not the case, the patient is placed onto the transfer mattress using the common log rolling technique,
the same as used to change a bed sheet. The buckled patient safety straps are attached. If the patient is
lying on a pad or absorbent sheet to keep the bed clean, it can be placed on top of the mattress to help
keep it clean. The transfer mattress can simply be wiped down between patients with the current anti-
bacteria cleaner being used on stretchers, or if the mattress really becomes soiled, it can be laundered.
Follow facility protocols and procedures for cleaning of equipment. (See Cleaning Instructions in the
Table of Contents). The Power Button on the Air Supply Control Unit does not have an On/Off
Indicator. To avoid incident, follow the instructions in the manual carefully.
1. Ensure support surface/mattress that the patient is going to be transferred to is at the highest level
of air flow prior to transfer. (When transferring to a low air loss bed).
2. Ensure transfer surfaces are as close as possible and equipment wheels have brakes applied.
3. Place the Sizewise™ ATD underneath the patient using the log-rolling technique and attach
patient safety straps. Whatever the patient is laying on to keep the bed mattress clean can be
placed on top of the transfer surface to keep it clean.
4. Plug the electrical cord into a grounded 120v AC hospital grade outlet.
5. Attach the flexible hose end to the mattress, parallel to the foot end of the bed or shuttle, and
snap in place.
6. Turn on air supply unit while keeping attention on the patient.
7. When inflation of the mattress is complete, grasp the pull handles and pull the patient on an
angle, either head first or feet first, until the patient is in the desired location.
NOTE: Be careful not to pull on the patient safety straps, but use the pull handles for
pulling. Avoid over transferring.
8. Ensure the patient is centered on the receiving equipment prior to turning off the air supply and
deflating the Sizewise ATD System.
9. Turn off the air supply and employ the bed/stretcher rails. Disconnect the hose from the
mattress.
NOTE: Never leave the patient unattended on an inflated transfer mattress. Always use
bed rails on opposite side for safety.
When transporting the stretcher and patient to the next location, the air supply can hang on the
stretcher/bed and be transported with the patient. It can also remain on the unit to be used with other
transfer mattresses. When the patient arrives at the ancillary department, the staff will reconnect the air
supply hose and transfer as above. Using the Sizewise™ ATD minimizes the need for a large lift team.

Cleaning Instructions
WARNING and CAUTION:
It is recommended that gloves and protective clothing be worn at all times during cleaning and
disinfecting. Prior to using cleaning/stain removal agents, read Safety Data Sheets for
appropriate safety measures.
To Launder the Transfer Mattress:
The mattresses are constructed of nylon twill. In between patient use, the mattress should be wiped
down with phenolic disinfectants, quaternaries, or other similar type solutions, as per hospital protocol
for stretchers, OR pads and/or bed mattresses. If the nylon mattress becomes badly soiled, it can be
laundered in a washing machine with a 160° degree Fahrenheit (65° C) maximum water temperature. A
100:1 bleach solution may be used (100 parts water: one part bleach) during the wash cycle.
The mattress should be air dried if possible. Air drying can be expedited by using the air supply unit to
circulate air through the inside of the mattress. The backing of the nylon is polyurethane, and will begin
to deteriorate after repeated high temperature drying. The Sizewise™ ATD mattress should never be
put in the dryer.
Air Supply unit Cleaning and Maintenance
NOTE: Hand clean only. DO NOT place in sterilization room or chamber.
1. Personal Protective Equipment should be used as directed by the Safety Data Sheet for the
disinfectant.
2. Prepare the disinfectant according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
3. Turn off the Air Supply unit and disconnect it from all electrical power to avoid electrical shock.
4. When cleaning the Air Supply unit avoid excessive moisture, especially in areas where there are
electrical connections and components, to prevent damage.
5. All surfaces of the Air Supply unit and the power cord are to be wiped using a coarse cloth,
dampened with the disinfectant solution prepared as directed by the manufacturer’s
recommendations, to remove organic material and visible soil.
6. Allow the Air Supply unit to remain wet with disinfectant solution for the manufacturer’s
recommended contact time.
7. Rinse all surfaces of the Air Supply unit with fresh water and use a clean cloth to remove
chemical and organic residue.
8. After cleaning, all surfaces are to be dried with a clean, dry cloth.
NOTE: To keep equipment working efficiently and effectively for an extended time period, it is
essential to make sure the equipment is cleaned regularly.
NOTE: Do not spray cleaners or liquids directly on the Air Supply.
NOTE: Check your Local/State/Federal Regulations Prior To Disposal.

Nylon Taffeta Mattress and Top Cover Cleaning Recommendations:
Personal Protective Equipment should always be used as directed by the disinfectant’s Safety Data
Sheet.
1. Prepare the disinfectant according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
2. Prepare a separate bucket of warm, fresh water to be used for rinsing the equipment after
cleaning/disinfecting procedures are completed as instructed.
3. All surfaces of the mattress are to be wiped using a coarse cloth dampened with the disinfectant,
prepared as directed by the manufacturer’s recommendations, to remove organic material and
visible soil.
4. Allow the mattress shell to remain wet with disinfectant solution for the manufacturer’s
recommended contact time.
5. Stains on the mattress top cover may be treated using an approved stain remover, according to
the manufacturer’s recommendations.
6. Rinse all surfaces of the mattress with fresh water and clean cloth to remove chemical and
organic residue.
Recommended EPA Registered Disinfectant:
Wex-Cide 128 (Wexford Labs), EPA Reg. #34810-31
Equipment must be disinfected using an EPA registered, hospital-grade disinfectant, according to the
manufacturer’s recommendations for use.
Recommended Stain Remover(s):
Stain Away (ABC Compounding)
This stain remover is effective in removing most difficult stains and is intended to be used in its original
concentration.
Infection Control
Whatever the patient is laying on to keep the hospital bed clean may be placed on top of the Sizewise™
ATD mattress to help keep it clean. If the mattress is used on an isolation patient, the hospital shall
employ the same protocols/procedures it utilizes for the bed mattress and/or for the linen from that
patient room.
Clostridium difficile (C. diff) Prevention:
Clorox Germicidal Wipes (Clorox Professional Products Company), EPA Reg. #67619-12
Green Alternative EPA Registered Disinfectant for Clostridium difficile (C. diff) Prevention:
Steriplex SD EPA Reg. # Activator (Part B) #84545-10, (Part A) #84545-11
These pre-moistened wipes meet the CDC’s recommendations for Clostridium difficile (C.diff) bacteria,
after the manufacturer’s recommended “wet contact time”.
1. Perform hand hygiene using soap and warm water, or hand sanitizer, and then put on disposable
gloves and eye protection.

2. Use wipes to clean the top and front of head/footboards, hand controls and cords, side rails and
mattress top cover, making sure to wipe between the mattress and side rails.
3. Change wipes often to ensure that surfaces remain wet with disinfectant for the manufacturer’s
required contact time.
4. Remove disposable gloves and discard in the trash; perform hand hygiene using soap and warm
water, or hand sanitizer, and then remove eye protection.
To reduce the discoloration of fabrics and degradation of the support surface lining, surfaces must be
thoroughly rinsed with clean, fresh water to remove chemical residues immediately after the
manufacturer’s recommended “wet contact time” has been reached. The use of bleach-based solutions
must be avoided whenever possible.

Safety Tips
Storage and Disposal
Keep the mattress in a clean dry area, away from heat or flames. Store the air supply and support
surface in a temperature range between -40°F(-40°C) and 176°F (80°C). Always store the support
surface flat on a clean, level surface. Avoid storage of other equipment on top of the support surface.
End-of life products must be disposed of properly according to local laws and regulations. Please
contact your local authorities for disposal and recycling options.
Important Safety Instructions
Unpacking and Set-Up Instructions
Keep out of direct sunlight.
DO NOT expose to temperatures greater than 80°C (176°F) or below -40°C (-40°F).
Ensure the power cord is plugged into a properly grounded 120v AC hospital grade outlet.
Safety Tips
Medical equipment should not be used, stacked or located on or around equipment that may
create electromagnetic interferences.
The use of cables or accessories other than those for which the blower was designed or tested can
significantly degrade emissions and immunity performance.
DO NOT use the device if the power cord is cut, frayed or loosely connected.
Mattress Cleaning Instructions
It is recommended that gloves and protective clothing be worn at all times during cleaning and
disinfecting. Follow facility protocols and procedures.
DO NOT autoclave.
Troubleshooting
Only authorized personnel should engage in the troubleshooting process. Troubleshooting by
unauthorized persons could result in personal injury or equipment damage.
Warning and Cautions
1. Caregivers must ensure that all caster brakes have been engaged prior to transfer.
2. Never attempt to move a patient on an uninflated support surface.
3. Do not block the air intakes of the Air Supply.
4. Never leave a patient unattended on an inflated device.
5. Use this product only for its intended purpose as described in this manual.
6. Only use authorized parts/attachments.
7. Always use a minimum of 2 Caregivers for transferring patients.

Electrical Hazards
1. Prior to each use ensure all cords are in good condition.
2. Unplug all sources of energy prior to maintenance or repair.
3. Ensure the power cord is routed free of hazards at all times.
4. Unplug power supply prior to cleaning of electronic equipment.
5. Ensure all electrical outlets used have appropriate electrical grounds.

Maintenance
CAUTION: The mattress requires regular maintenance to ensure performance and avoid
premature wear, damage and injury.
Check the items on this chart at the indicated intervals. If any of the items are loose, worn, bent or
distorted immediately have them checked and/or repaired by an authorized Sizewise technician.
Frequent maintenance and servicing will improve performance and extend mattress life. For long term

Inspect top cover for punctures, rips, tears or damage.
Inspect mattress base for punctures, rips, tears or damage.
Connect the Air Supply unit and verify proper operation.
Ensure air filter is clean and properly installed into Air Supply unit.
Ensure mattress is clean/disinfected and patient ready.
Ensure power cord is free of damage and has appropriate ground.

Troubleshooting
CAUTION: Only authorized personnel should engage in the troubleshooting process.
Troubleshooting by unauthorized persons could result in personal injury or equipment
damage.
WARNING: To avoid electrical shock, DO NOT open the Air Supply unit. Refer
servicing to qualified personnel only.
If mattress is not inflating:
Check that the hoses are not punctured, kinked or disconnected.
Check for proper connections from the hoses to the Air Supply unit. Make sure they are secure.
Check filter.
If there is power loss:
Check the ON/OFF switch.
Check power cord for any damage.

representative for service.
