Warnings and Cautions
Warnings/Cautions: This symbol is intended to alert the user to the presence of
important operating, maintenance or servicing instructions. Disregarding a
warning could result in patient and/or user injury as well as damage to equipment.
Electrical Shock Hazard Warning: This symbol is intended to alert the user to
the presence of electrical shock hazards. It is important to follow all instructions
and special procedures to avoid electrical shock to the operator, care provider
and/or patient.
Important Safety Instructions
Please read all of these instructions prior to operating the Platinum 6000™ System. Retain this
information for future reference. Follow all warnings and instructions that appear on the
controller and the mattress.
Handling
Use care in handling the Platinum 6000™ System Controller. Dropping the unit may
cause internal damage and cause it to malfunction. DO NOT use a unit that shows any
sign of physical damage until it has been checked by a Sizewise representative.
Dust, Dirt & Tobacco Smoke
Keep the mattress and controller away from excessive dust, dirt and tobacco smoke as
they can cause premature system failure.
Controller Location
DO NOT place the controller on an unstable table or cart. The unit may fall and be
damaged. Use care in installing the controller to hospital bed footboards to make sure the
footboard can withstand the weight of the controller and the hoses.
Power Cord
The Platinum 6000™ System is equipped with a hospital grade, grounded line plug. The
plug can only be inserted into the outlet in one way. If the plug is not usable with the
wall outlet, contact your Sizewise representative prior to operating the unit. DO NOT
modify the safety grounding features of the product. DO NOT plug the unit into an outlet
that is overloaded; this may damage the unit and could create a fire hazard.

Be sure to route the power cord to the wall socket in a way that will prevent the cord
from being tripped over or accidentally pulled from the wall socket. Routing the cord
under the bed is recommended. DO NOT attach the power cord to portions of a hospital
bed that move into positions that will stress or cut the power cord. Damaged electrical
power cords must always be replaced. DO NOT attempt repairs.
Power Sources
The Platinum 6000™ System should only be operated from a 120VAC 60Hz 3A, or
higher, rated outlet. If unsure about the power source, consult a Sizewise representative.
Lightning
For added protection, the controller should be turned off and the unit unplugged from the
wall during an electrical storm. The air mattress will remain inflated when the controller
is turned off.
Operating Environment
The Platinum 6000™ System is designed to operate in a temperature range from 10°C
(50°F) to 43°C (110°F). The controller should not be placed next to a radiator or heat
source. The unit should have access to circulating room air. DO NOT operate the unit in
a confined space. DO NOT cover the controller with plastic or other materials that could
limit air flow into the controller.
Servicing
This product contains no user serviceable parts. Removing the cover or attempting to
service the unit yourself could expose you to potentially hazardous voltages. Breaking or
removing any of the warranty seals will void the factory warranty. Refer all product
service to your Sizewise representative.
Water & Other Liquids
DO NOT operate the controller near water. If the case gets wet, wipe it off immediately.
Spilling liquids onto the controller cover should be avoided as it sometimes can be
difficult to clean off and could damage the finish.
Oxygen Equipment
Extreme care should be taken when using oxygen equipment. DO NOT USE AN
OXYGEN TENT NEAR THE PLATINUM 6000™ SYSTEM. Because of the air flow
generated by the Platinum 6000™ System, smoking is not recommended in the proximity
of the controller. To reduce the risk of electrical shock, DO NOT remove the cover or
otherwise tamper with the operation of the controller.
Smoking in Bed
It is advised that smoking in bed is a hazard and although fire retardant materials are used
in the construction of the mattress, it is not recommended.
Flammable Mixtures
This product is not suitable for use in the presence of flammable mixtures.
Device Information
When there is no electrical power to the unit, the mattress will not deflate. Be sure to
check the position of the patient frequently. If the mattress becomes deflated for a period
of time, remove the patient from the mattress surface to prevent possible injury to the
patient.

Unpacking and Set-Up Instructions
Make sure power cord is plugged into properly grounded AC 110V outlet.
Seven Zones of Bed Rail Entrapment
Bed rail entrapment is a serious health risk that can result in serious injury or even death.
Sizewise recommends the care provider be mindful of the FDA guidelines relevant to bed
rail entrapment, as serious injury can result. It is also the care provider’s ultimate decision
whether or not to use bed rails with the patient.
Mattress Cleaning Instructions
It is recommended that gloves and protective clothing be worn at all times during
cleaning and disinfecting.
DO NOT autoclave.
Maintenance
The mattress requires regular maintenance to ensure performance and avoid premature
wear, damage and injury.
Troubleshooting
Only authorized personnel should engage in the troubleshooting process.
Troubleshooting by unauthorized persons could result in personal injury or equipment
damage.
To avoid electrical shock, DO NOT open the pump. Refer servicing to qualified
personnel only.
Interference
This device has been tested and found to comply with the limits for an FCC Type B device,
pursuant to FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide a reasonable protection against
harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates and can radiate radio
frequency energy. The equipment may cause interference to radio communications if not
installed and operated properly. There is no guarantee that interference will not occur. In the
event harmful interference occurs, the user is encouraged to try the following measures to
remedy the problem:
1. Turn the controller on and off to verify it is the cause of the interference.
2. Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna on the equipment with a problem.
3. Increase the separation between the controller and the equipment.
4. Connect the equipment to a different power outlet from the controller.
5. Consult a Sizewise representative or dealer for assistance.

Device Information
Description of the Device
The Platinum 6000™ System incorporates alternating pressure therapy techniques to reduce
interface pressures on the skin surface. When the patient is placed on the mattress surface, the
mattress firmness is adjusted automatically after the patient’s height and weight are entered on
the display panel. This distributes the body weight uniformly across the mattress surface. The
Alternating Pressure Mode reduces the air pressure in alternate air cells every 5, 10, or 15
minutes to reduce the interface pressure on specific areas of the body even further. The air cells
with reduced air pressure are alternated with adjacent air cells to allow a major portion of the
body to obtain the therapeutic effect while maintaining the patient in an air flotation state.
CAUTION: When there is no electrical power to the unit, the mattress will not
deflate. Be sure to check the position of the patient frequently. If the mattress
becomes deflated for a period of time, remove the patient from the mattress
surface to prevent possible injury to the patient.

Unpacking and Set-Up Instructions
Installation of the Platinum 6000™ System
The Platinum 6000™ Mattress can be placed on any conventional bed used in hospitals, nursing
homes or a home medical bed. The original bed mattress should be removed and stored in an
appropriate place. The following steps should be completed in installing the system:
1. Roll out mattress onto the bed frame with the air hoses exiting at the foot of the bed.
2. Strap the mattress base to the bed frame. Use caution when attaching the straps to make
sure there is no strap damage when the bed position is changed.
3. Place the Platinum 6000™ System Controller on the footboard as close to the center as
possible.
4. Make sure the hoses can reach the controller without undue strain.
5. Connect the air hoses to the controller.
6. Press the hose onto the controller connector until the hose connector clicks.
7. Pull back gently on the hose connector to verify the mechanical connection is secure.
a. The appropriate connections will be obvious as only certain mattress side
connectors will mate properly with the control unit side ports.
8. Examine each of the air cells in the mattress. Make sure each air cell is vertical and not
twisted in the mattress base.
9. Verify positive air connections by gently pulling the air manifold and air cell connections
gently apart.
a. If the connectors separate, press them back together until a click is heard.
10. Loose air cell connectors may prevent the mattress from inflating properly.
11. Check the snaps on the end of each air cell to make sure they are securely fastened to the
mattress base.
12. Route the power cord in a safe manner to the closest power outlet and plug in the unit.
a. When the unit is powered up, set the control unit mode to Auto Firm mode. This
will fill the mattress more rapidly in preparation for the patient.
13. Note the inflation of the air cells. Make sure all air cells are fully inflated and are not
twisted in the mattress base.
14. Change the mode from Auto Firm mode to the required mode of operation.
15. Adjust the firmness level for the patient by entering the patient’s height and weight on the
display control panel. This is accomplished by first depressing the patient Height button,
using the Up/Down buttons to increase or decrease the default height setting in
increments of 1” (2 cm). The same procedure is used when setting the Weight button to
set the patient’s weight in kilograms (pounds), using increments of 2 lbs. (1 kg).
a. Heavier patients are set to higher firmness levels. Lighter patients are set to lower
firmness levels. The Platinum 6000™ is preprogrammed to automatically select

the optimum comfort pressure for the patient once the patient’s height and weight
are entered on the display control panel. If the preprogrammed comfort setting is
not appropriate because of the patient’s body type, pressing the Manual pressure
button provides the ability to override the preprogrammed settings for adjustments
to the surface.
Unpacking Instructions (no tools required):
Remove the products from the packing material and examine for shipping damage. If damage is
detected in shipping, contact the freight company and file a damage complaint immediately.
Set-Up on Sizewise Bed Frames
Follow these steps for installation on Sizewise (and most non-Sizewise bedframes:
1. Verify mattress is the correct size for the bed frame top deck. Refer to Side Rail Entrapment
Guidelines on page 18.
2. Place bed frame in flat position.
3. Connect pump and perform safety checklist. Refer to page 23.
4. Disinfect mattress prior to patient use. Refer to Mattress Cleaning Instructions on page 19.
5. Zero scale prior to placing patient on surface.

Operating Instructions
Control Unit Operation
Power On/Standby
Toggles between Power On and Standby mode. When Power is selected, the Power LED and the
other displays are illuminated, but no power is applied to the compressor until a mode is selected.
If no mode is selected, Auto Firm mode is activated after 5 minutes. Hold the power button
down for more than 2 seconds to enter the Standby mode.
Auto Firm Mode
Blows maximum airflow through both channels in the mattress to facilitate inflation time and is
designed to revert into a normal operating mode after inflation has been achieved. After a 15
minute period the control unit will default to an A/P 5 minute operating cycle.
NOTE: This mode may be used to max inflate the mattress surface for patient procedures.
However, due to the default change to A/P mode after a 15 minute period, it is advisable that the
pump be put in Immersion mode at maximum pressure or the control unit powered down if the
procedure is to take more than 15 minutes.
Alternating Pressure (A/P) Mode
The mattress cells are alternated according to cycle time settings (5, 10 and 15) programmed on
the front control panel.
Alternating Pressure (A/P) /Low Air Loss (LAL) Mode
The mattress cells are alternated according to cycle time settings (5, 10 and 15) programmed on
the front control panel. After the channels have adjusted to their set pressure, the pump then
continuously feeds air to the LAL manifold and to the advanced microclimate top cover.
Immersion/Low Air Loss Mode
Pressure is equalized in the mattress cells between both alternating pressure channels to a
comfort pressure associated with the patient’s weight to maximize immersion. After the channels
have adjusted to their set pressure, the pump continuously feeds air to the LAL manifold and to
the advanced microclimate top cover.
Immersion Mode
Pressure is equalized in the mattress cells between both alternating pressure channels to a
comfort pressure associated with the patient’s weight to maximize immersion. The pressure is
then regulated and maintained at the selected setting.
Power Failure Indicator/Alarm
This LED blinks and sounds an audible alarm to indicate that power has been removed, either
because the plug was removed or power to the outlet has been removed.

Low Pressure Warning
If a problem exists with maintaining pressure in the active alternation channel, this LED will
blink and an audible alarm will sound.
Cycle Time
This button selects the cycle time of alternating pressure between 5, 10, and 15 minute periods.
When the pump is in Auto Firm or Immersion Mode, this button is not functional.
Lock Button
When depressed for 2 seconds this button will lockout any of the other buttons on the panel to
prevent unauthorized or accidental changes. This function can be disabled by depressing the
button for an additional 2 seconds.
The audible alarm is sounded to indicate the operation of this function and an amber LED
indicates the locked state.
Alarm Silence Button
This turns off the audible alarm (the LED for the warning still flashes). If the alarm condition is
re-triggered, the audible alarm will be turned on again.
Patient Height Button
When the patient Height button is selected the Up/Down buttons may be used to increase/
decrease the patient’s height in 1 in. (2 cm) increments. . The Height display will blink when this
function is selected. The default height setting is 68 inches.
Patient Weight Button
When the patient Weight button is selected the Up/Down buttons are used to increase/decrease
the weight shown in the LED display by 2 lbs. (1 kg) increments. The low end and high end of
the weight range is 100 lbs. to 900 lbs. (50 kg to 500 kg) and above 345 lbs. (180 kg) the
pressure increases in larger steps (bariatric mode). The Weight display will blink when this
function is selected. Once the height and weight are set, it will cause a comfort setting for those
parameters to be automatically set for the patient. The default weight setting is 150 lbs.
Manual Pressure Setting Firm/Soft
This buttons allow an override of the predetermined pressure set by the patient’s height and
weight. It can be used as a comfort setting in environments where optimal settings are less
critical and patient comfort is a priority. A pressure range from 0mmHg to 50mmHg is available.
The default settings are set to 68”, 150 lbs. providing a suggested pressure of 20 mmHg for a
patient sleeping flat on his or her back.
A/B CELLS Displayed Channel Pressures
The actual pressure in the alternating pressure channels are displayed in the lower portion of the
control panel. The LED’s to each side of the Channel Pressure displays also indicate the channel
that is actively inflating or deflating.

NOTE: The Platinum 6000™ top cover is designed for use without a top sheet. If a bottom
sheet is desired, place a flat sheet over the top cover and allow it to drape over on all 4 sides of
the bed. DO NOT tuck in the ends of the sheet under the mattress. The bottom sheet must have
give to conform to the patient’s body profile. This relieves excess pressure and shear on the
skin.
Switching from Metric to Imperial Units
When the pump is supplied from the factory the weight units are shown in pounds and the height
shown in inches, ranging from 48” to 79”.
For convenience it is possible to configure the unit to show the height in meters and the weight in
kilograms, but each configuration change from imperial units to metric or vice-versa will clear
all previous patient settings from internal memory and will reset pressure settings to their default
values of 68” and 150 lbs.
Please note that changing modes should only be carried out by an authorized person as part of a
management policy and is not part of normal day-to-day operations. It is specifically not
intended to act as a metric/imperial calculator and will not perform as such.
The control unit should be in the Power Off/Standby mode before beginning the following
sequences:
1. To change from imperial to metric mode:
a. First press and hold the Weight button and then press and hold the Height
button simultaneously.
b. All LEDs will then flash and the Power Fail alarm will sound. Keep the buttons
depressed for six audible beeps and then release.
c. Cancel the alarm and then Power the units ON.
d. Upon switching ON the metric mode will be operative and the height display will
show a value from 1.2 to 1.9 meters with a conspicuous decimal point, and the
weight will be shown in kilograms.
2. To change from metric to imperial mode:
a. First press and hold the Weight button and then press and hold the Manual
button simultaneously.
b. All LEDs will then flash and the Power Fail alarm sounds. Keep the buttons
depressed for six audible beeps and then release.
c. Cancel the alarm and then Power the unit ON.
d. Upon switching ON, the imperial mode will be operative and the height display
will show a value from 48” to 79” and the weight will be shown in pounds.
Please note that in Imperial mode the decimal point will not be shown.
3. Please note the absence or presence of the decimal point clearly indicates which mode
has been selected, as well as the appropriate number range. Weight is always shown in
the units corresponding to the height. It is not possible to show metric height with
imperial weight or vice-versa.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) requires a rapid deflation of the mattress. If CPR is
required, twist the CPR Plug on the top right hand side of the mattress. Also, remove the hoses
from the controller by depressing the latch on the connector for each hose to release the hose
from the controller. This will allow the mattress to vent the air in the air cells. Place a CPR
board under the patient and hyper extend the patient’s neck to open the airway. Begin
administering CPR.
If defibrillation is required, position the patient’s arms, legs and torso away from the metal
portions of the bed. Unplug the controller from the wall receptacle. When the mattress needs to
be re-inflated, reconnect the air hoses, plug in the power cord and select the Auto Firm mode
from the front panel.

Patient Care Functions
Placing the Patient on the Mattress Surface
Place the patient on the mattress surface from a bed or stretcher with a transfer device. The
mattress should be set in the Auto Firm mode. In order to ensure proper immersion and
envelopment of the patient, the user should:
1. Position patient on surface in center of bed.
2. Initialize soft/firm settings on control unit.
3. Wait a moment to allow internal sensors to activate pressure redistribution. Generally,
depending on patient body makeup, initial pressure redistribution is complete in
approximately 2-3 minutes.
4. Elevate the head of the bed to at least 30 degrees.
5. Unzip the mattress and visually inspect the height of the cells for sufficient inflation.
There should be several inches between the patient and the frame of the bed. Adjust the
air flow accordingly. Ask the patient if they can feel the bed frame beneath them. If yes,
add air incrementally. Repeat until patient no longer feels the frame beneath them.
6. If the patient cannot reply verbally, unzip the mattress and visually inspect the height of
the cells for sufficient air inflation. There should be several inches between the patient
and the frame of the bed. Adjust the air flow accordingly.
7. CPR: The standards for life support recommended by the American Heart Association for
performing CardioPulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) recommend a hard level surface for
performing CPR, moving the person to the floor if possible. For performing CPR, place
the CPR board, lower the head of the bed, position the patient on their back and follow
standard CPR procedures of the facility.
Positioning the Patient
When moving a patient the control unit should be in the Auto Firm Mode.
To reposition the patient, change the control unit to Auto Firm Mode. This makes the mattress
surface firm and facilitates the repositioning of the patient with less strain on the care provider.
When the patient has been repositioned, press auto firm to return to the previous setting.
NOTE: DO NOT leave a patient unattended on the mattress surface with the safety side rails in
the down position. When leaving a patient, secure the safety side rails in the up position. Make
sure the safety side rails are high enough to properly protect the patient when the mattress is fully
inflated, while continuing to be mindful of the FDA guidelines on bed rail entrapment.
Backrest Up or Fowler Position
When the patient’s backrest is elevated, it may be necessary to manually increase the mattress
firmness to compensate for the additional weight placed in the center portion of the mattress.
Observe the patient for a short time after raising the backrest to make sure the buttocks and thigh
areas are not “bottomed-out”.

Prone Position
DO NOT leave a prone patient on the mattress surface. If the patient is unable to move without
help, the patient’s airway may be compromised. If the patient is to be kept prone for an extended
period of time, consult a Sizewise representative for assistance.
Bedpan Placement & Removal
Position the patient’s hips over the center of the mattress. Using Immersion Mode, lower the
pressure setting with the Firm/Soft button. Turn the patient into the side-lying position and place
the bedpan.
The pressure in the center section of the mattress will lower to make inserting the bedpan easier.
The firmness setting may be adjusted to increase the firmness of the center section after the pan
is placed in position.
When the bedpan is to be removed, logroll the patient off the bedpan and remove it. Readjust the
firmness level to the appropriate setting. Select Immersion mode and wait for the mattress to
completely re-inflate before activating Pulsating Pressure mode again.
NOTE: Always remove the bedpan before entering the SW Immersion™ mode.
Removing the Patient from the Mattress Surface
If the patient is to be removed with a transfer lift, set the control unit into Auto Firm mode.
Allow the mattress to firm and position the patient into the lift. When the patient has exited the
bed, the controller can be turned off.
If the patient can sit up and is mobile, lower the firmness level to the lowest setting and wait for
the mattress to soften in the middle. The patient can sit up and the mattress will conform to the
body making a more stable platform for patient egress. When the patient has exited the bed, the
controller can be turned off.
Patient Care in the Event of a Sustained Power Failure
The controller will maintain the mattress inflation if power is lost. Monitor the patient carefully
to prevent injury.

Seven Zones of Bed Rail Entrapment
If the patient would have any clinical conditions that could result in risk of falling or improperly
lying in bed, the bed should be left at its lowest setting and in flat position when not attended.
Sizewise recommends the use of bed rails if they are available. There are seven zones of bed rail
entrapment.
WARNING: Bed rail entrapment is a serious health risk that can result in serious
injury or even death. Sizewise recommends the care provider be mindful of the
FDA guidelines relevant to bed rail entrapment, as serious injury can result.
These guidelines can be found on the FDA website. When using an Air Therapy
system the care provider is responsible for ensuring the mattress properly fits the
bed frame. It is also the care provider’s ultimate decision whether or not to use
bed rails with the patient.

Mattress Cleaning Instructions
WARNING and CAUTION:
It is recommended that gloves and protective clothing be worn at all times during
cleaning and disinfecting.
DO NOT autoclave.
NOTE: Improper cleaning, rinsing or the incorrect use of cleaning agents can lead to premature
fabric discoloration and breakdown of the fabric’s fluid-resistance, stain-resistance and fabric
strength. Properly rinsing all cleaning agents and disinfecting chemicals is a critical step in
extending the life of covers on medical mattresses and support surfaces.
Over time, cleaning solutions may cause damage to the integrity of the fabrics used for support
surfaces. Cleaning agents that are strong enough to be efficacious cleaners and disinfectants may
cause degradation of the same fabrics on which they are being used.
To minimize the negative impact of cleaning agents:
Contact time must be monitored and kept to the required time identified on the
manufacturer’s instructions.
All cleaning solutions must be diluted in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
All covers must be rinsed after every cleaning cycle. Rinsing of the support surface
covers with clean water as the immediate step after the disinfection process is
fundamental to extending the usable life of the covers.
NOTE: Only the outer cover of the mattress requires cleaning and maintenance. Disassembly
of the support surface for maintenance of internal components is not recommended. DO NOT
use harsh solvents or cleaners. Special care should be used to not puncture the mattress with
needles or sharp instruments. This may result in loss of integrity of the mattress cover or internal
components.
Recommended EPA Registered Disinfectants:
Wex-Cide 128 (Wexford Labs), EPA Reg. #34810-31
Equipment must be disinfected using an EPA registered, hospital-grade disinfectant, according to
the manufacturer’s recommendations for use.
Recommended Stain Remover(s):
Stain Away (ABC Compounding)
This stain remover is effective in removing most difficult stains and is intended to be used in its
original concentration.
