Internet at the
Desktop
At the rst glance, the snom 200 does not look like a „Voice over
IP“ telephone. As a matter of fact, the plastic was taken from a ISDN
telephone from Elmeg — a German telephone manufacturer who builds
phones for more than 50 years.
We think this is good. End users are not asking for technology,
they are asking for solutions. The snom 200 feels just like a „normal“
phone. When you read this manual, most of the time you will think this is
just another phone.
The Internet makes its way to the telephone. Just like Email and
the World Wide Web has revolutionized the exchange of paper, we believe
that Voice over IP will do the same with real time comminications. In a few
years we will ask ourselfs why we were transporting voice over seperate
lines. For you, that future starts today!
Enjoy becoming callable with your Email-account name and ma-
king phone calls without caring about the bill over the Internet!
Sincerely,
Dr. Christian Stredicke Nicolas Peter-Pohland

Introduction
Before you start using the snom 200, could should take a quick
look at the keyboard. This manual will refer the keys with special names
which are explaned in this chapter.
Directly below the display you nd three function keys. The left-
most key is called F1, the middle key is F2 and the right key is F3.
On the right side of the phone you nd programmable keys, P1
(top) to P5 (bottom). The functionality of these keys can be programmed
with the web interface. This is explaned later in this document.
On the left side you nd four key with xed functionality. The
topmost key „SPEAKER“ switches between handsfree mode and handset
mode. The „TRANSFER“ key is used to initate a transfer. This key is only

active when a transfer is possible. The key „REDIAL“ is used to get to the
list of your last calls. The „HOLD“ key is used to put the active call on
hold.
Below the function keys you nd the „MENU“ key. This key swit-
ches to the menu. The „CANCEL“ key can be used to cancel actions. The
exact meaning depends on the context and is explaned in this document.
„ENTER“ is usually used to initiate actions and „CLEAR“ to end an operati-
on or to clear the entry. The left and right key are used for navigation.

Installation
The rst time when you turn the phone on, it will perform some
checks to ensure that everything is all right. Depending on you network
setup, this procedure may take between one and ten minutes.
Updating the Software
When you turn of the phone the rst time, a better rmware and/
or bootloader version than the software version on the phone might be
available. It is recommended to accept the software update by pressing
the ENTER key.
It takes a few minutes to download the software from the Inter-
net and load it onto the memory of the phone.
IMPORTANT: When the phone updates the software, do dot
turn off the power. This might bring the phone into a state that cannot be
recovered.
Wizard Setup
When the latest software has been loaded, a setup wizard checks
that the most relevant settings are available. During the checking, you
will hear a startup melody and see on the screen:
First of all, you can select your preferred language. Select you
language by using the LEFT and RIGHT key, you can also use keys F1 and
K3 in this case.

Press ENTER when you have selected the language of your
choice.
If the phone automatically received an IP address, a network
mask, a IP gateway and at least one DNS server address, it will skip as-
king the network question. This is typically the case when you use the
phone in a DHCP environment.
If you answer this question with „yes“ (by pressing F1), the pho-
ne will reboot and try again to get an DHCP identity.
If you press No (F3), the phone will prompt you for an IP address.
Please enter your IP address. To enter a point, you can use the star key
(*).
After pressing ENTER, you will be asked for the netmask, IP gate-
way and DNS server addresses as well. Make sure that these settings are
correct. The phone will reboot after you changed the network identity to
make sure that everything is set up correctly.
Then you can select your prefered dial tone. This tone will be
used when the called party does not play a dial tone and the phone has
to generate the tone.
After selecting the dial tone, you must also select the time zone.
The phone offers a number of time zones around the world including their
daylight saving rule.
The phone then should go to the idle screen, where it displays the
current time. Probably the phone did not get a time information, therefore
don‘t be surprised the phone believes it‘s still in computer stoneage.

Next Steps
After the basic conguration has been set up, you should register
the phone with a proxy or a gatekeeper. The „R“ behind the date indicates
that there is a problem with the registration. In our case the problem is
that there is nothing set up at all.
Because the network has been set up and the phone is accessible
from the network, you can now use a web browser to nish the set up.
If you use DHCP, you need to check the IP address of the phone.
In order to do this, press the MENU key and navigate with the LEFT and
RIGHT keys to the Information menu.
By pressing the F1 key, you see the IP address of the phone.

Point you web browser to this location. You will see the web in-
terface of the phone. You can close the screen by pressing the CANCEL
button twice.
SIP Setup
Typically, your network operator will set up an account for you.
This account has the form „sip:[email protected]“ and may include cre-
dentials (realm, username and password).
If you have received a password, you should rst set up the cre-
dentials. Do do this, select the menu SIP/Authentication from the pull
down menu. You can also directly go to this page by entering the web
page address „set_sip_auth_en.htm“.
Enter at least the username and the password information in the
rst line. The other lines are used only if you register with more than one
line. Press the save button.

With or without a password, you now need to continue with the
setup of the line. Go to the menu SIP/Lines and enter your name, the
account name and the proxy adress.
After pressing the save button, the phone will try to register with
the given address. This process may take a few seconds and the display
should remove the „R“ symbol in the rst line.
When the „R“ symbol has disappeared, you can try your rst
voice over IP phone call.

Making Calls
Making calls with a voice over IP phone can be exactly the same
as with a „normal“ analog or ISDN phone. This depends on the network
setup which has been done by your network operator.
Making Calls
In many cases, you just want to call a telephone number. You
can start entering the number with the handset in the cradle („handsfree
dialing“) or the traditional way by rst picking up the handset and then
start dialing.
Traditonal Dialing
If you choose the traditional way, the ringback is played only if
your registration is ok. This is an indication that everything is alright and
you can expect that the call will work normally. If you do not hear a ring-
back, there is a problem with your identity. However, you can still try to
call a number.
Depending on the coutry style, your key presses are echoed with
the DTMF touch tones (ISDN countries do not use touch tones, analog
phone contries do this). Depending on you network setup, the phone will
try to dial the number that you have entered so far. As soon as the num-
ber is connected you will hear the ringback tone. If your network is not set
up for overlap dialing, you need to press the enter key to try a number.
By default, the programmable keys of the phone have the func-
tion of lines. When you start dialing a number, the phone will grab a free
line. The programmable key for this line will start to blink slowly.

If you pressed the wrong number, you can press the F2 key. This
will delete the digit left from the cursor. If you press CLEAR or F3, you
delete the whole line.
You can move the cursor with the LEFT and RIGHT keys.
If you press the CANCEL key of put the handset into the cradle
back again, the phone will back into the idle mode.
Handsfree Dialing
The only difference between handsfree dialing and traditional di-
aling is the overlag dialing. In handsfree dialing, the phone will try to start
the call only if you press ENTER or pick up the handset.
URL Dialing and Number Guessing
When you enter a phone number, you can switch the keyboard
mapping mode with the F1 key. You can then „stutter“ the letter that you
want to enter.
The phone will try to „guess“ you number by searching the last
dialed and received numbers and the address book for the pattern that
you have entered so far. In many cases this will signicantly simply ente-
ring the number. The number guessing mechanism starts when you enter
at least two digits.
You can also enter „real“ names. The number guessing mecha-
nism searches also the names of the available contacts.
The number guessing ends when you delete a character, move
the cursor, or clear the eld. To use the guessed number, press the enter
key.
When you use the RIGHT key, the guessed number is copied into
the eld as if you had entered that number. You then may edit the num-
ber. By pressing the LEFT key you explicitly cancel the number guessing
mechanism for this call.

Speed Dialing
If the number that you enter consists of only one number, the
phone tries to look up the speed dial list. This list is set up and maintained
in the web interface, see below.
There is no special guessing indication for this. Just press enter
after you entered the speed dial number and the prone replaces the single
digit number with the speed dial number.
Calls Within the Same Domain
When you enter a number, the phone checks if the nubmer is a
valid „URL“. In essence, that means it checks if the number contains a @-
Symbol. If this is the case, it does not do any modications.
If the @ is missing, the phone appends the domain of the current
registration to the number. For example, if you are registered as <sip:
[email protected]> and dial the number abc, then the phone will convert this
into <sip:[email protected]>.
Incoming Calls
When you dial a number, incoming calls are not explicitly signaled
on the display or on the speaker. This is to keep you undisturbed in this
mode. However, you will see that another line is allocated for the new in-
coming call and starts to blink fast.
To pick up the incoming call, you must rst cancel entering your
number. You can do this with the previously described keys, for example
the CANCEL key. Then the phone will switch into the ringing mode, which
is described below.
If you do not want to take this call, you can just continue entering
the number that you want to call.
Accepting Calls
When someone calls you, the phone will allocate a line on the
programmable keys and start blinking that key. In addition, the indication

light starts ickering and if the phone is in idle state, the phone will start
ringing.
You can accept the call by picking up the handset or by pressing
the OK key. If you press F3 (Deny) or CANCEL, the call will be denied.
Talking
When you are in a call, there a some things that you can do du-
ring a call.
In the rst line, you see the name of the other party and the du-
ration of the call in minutes and seconds (if the connection exists for more
than one hour, it switches to hours and minutes).
If you hand up or press F3 (Deny), the call is terminated. You will
hear a short notication about the end of the call and then the phone goes
back to idle mode.
When you press a dial key (0-9, #, *), this key will be sent to
the other party as DTMF input. This is important when you are talking to
automatic answering machines and interactive voice response systems.
If you press the SPEAKER key, you can switch between handsfree
mode and normal handset mode.
If you press the LEFT or RIGHT key, you can change the volume
of the speaker or the handset (depending on the mode that you are in).
In this mode, you can press LEFT and RIGHT until you have the
right volume. Press ENTER to go back to the connected screen or press
CANCEL to go back without changing the volume.

Multiple Calls
Sometimes you want to put a call on hold and talk to somebody
else. If you are on a switchboard, this is typically the case when you want
to connect incoming calls to another person.
The rst step in all these cases is to put the other party on hold.
This can be done in two different ways.
The rst way is to press the HOLD key. This key puts the currently
active call on hold and switches to a screen where you can initate another
call.
The other way to get into this mode is to press the programmable
key that represents the currently active call. You can think of the pro-
grammable keys as „radio buttons“, which select the call that you want to
be connected to. Calls that are on hold, have their LED on all the time.
You can then start to start the other number that you want to
reach. When you are connected to that person, the F1 or the TRANSFER
button become active and indicates that you can transfer this call to ano-
ther call that is on hold.
If there are several choices for calls which you can use for a
transfer, the phone will prompt you for the call that you want transfer the
active call to. Use the LEFT and RIGHT keys to select the right call and
then press F1 or the TRANSFER key to initiate the transfer.
Call Lists
The phone keeps lists about dialed calls, missed calls and taken
calls. Each of the list may contain up to hundred entries and are kept in
the volatile memory of the phone (which means, if you reboot the phone
they are lost).
If you missed calls, the phone changes the idle screen and dis-
plays the number of missed calls.

To access the list of missed calls, just press F3 and select the
missed call list.
If you select the missed calls, you see the number of the calls
that you missed.
When looking at the lists, you can nativate using the LEFT and
RIGHT key to nd the entry that you are interested in. If you pick up the
handset, the phone begins to call that number.
If you press F1 (Add Book), the entry is added to the address
book and stored permanently on the phone (see below). If you press F3
(Delete) the entry is deleted from the list. If you press F2, the displayed
number is takes as template for editing this number.
The other lists behave in the same way. To access the list of di-
aled records, you can press the REDIAL key.
Address Book
The address book permamently stores up to hundred contacts
on the phone. There is no special way to select the address book; this is
automatically done by the number guessing mechanism.
The administration of the address book is done with the web
browser (you dont want to manually enter names into address book any-
way). See below for the explanations on using the web interface.
Message Waiting Indication
When you mailbox has a new message waiting for you, it sends a
special notication to the phone, a „message waiting indication“. In such
