Overview
The HKDV-503 connects to the HDW-500 HD (high
definition) Digital VTR and controls the HD/NTSC
output video signals and the image enhancer of the
down-converter built into the VTR.
It can also be used as a remote controller for the
HKPF-525 HD-NTSC Down-Converter Board and
HKPF-1125 525-HD Up-Converter Board fitted to the
PFV series.
The following are the principal features of this product.
Video output adjustments for both HDTV
and NTSC
Both outputs (HDVS 1125-line and NTSC 525-line) of
the HD Digital VTR HDW-500 and the HD output of
the 525-HD Up-Converter Board HKPF-1125 can be
adjusted.
The parameters which can be adjusted for each output
are as follows:
HD: Y (luminance) level, PB/PR(color difference)
levels, master level, setup level, sync phase
D1: Y level, B-Y/R-Y levels, master level, sync
phase, cross color
D2: video level, chrominance level, setup level, sync
phase, hue, cross color
Down/Up-conversion mode selection
The following three modes can be selected for the HD-
NTSC down-conversion and NTSC-HD up-conversion
mode:
• CROP mode (the sides of the HDTV image are lost)
• LETTER BOX mode (the HDTV image appears in a
slot with its aspect ratio unchanged at 16:9)
• SQUEEZE mode (the HDTV image is compressed
horizontally)
Down/Up-converter image enhancer
adjustment
This adjusts the image enhancer built into the down/
up-converter. The following items can be adjusted:
H CROP•V LETTER: horizontal position for
cropping in the edge crop mode with a down-
converter, and horizontal position of the HDTV
image in the edge crop mode and vertical position
for cropping in the letter box mode with an up-
converter
DETAIL GAIN: sharpness of edge enhancement
LIMITER: maximum limit to detail added to
enhance original signal
CRISP: amplitude setting for not enhancing small-
amplitude signals
DEPEND: luminance range for edge enhancement
FREQUENCY: center frequency for edge
enhancement
H/V RATIO: ratio of horizontal and vertical edge
enhancement settings
GAMMA: gradient of gamma correction curve
RS-422 remote control
You can use an optional digital video controller cable
(D-sub 15-pin/9-pin: RCC-1502H/1505H/1510H/
1530H) for direct connection to control the HDW-500,
the HKPF-525 and the HKPF-1125.
Memory function for adjustments and
settings
Up to 99 sets of settings can be saved in memory and
recalled as needed. Each set consists of the settings for
each output signal and the system settings.
Display function for adjustments and
settings
If DIP switch 2 on the internal board is set to the ON
position, you can display the setting value for each
adjustment in the MEMORY ADDR. indicator in the
memory section.

1RESET button
This resets the internal CPU to the same initial state as
after powering on. If the system stops operating
normally, press this button using a ball-point pen or
similar. Pressing this button does not affect settings
saved in the internal memory.
2VIDEO gain switch
Toggles the lower limit of the adjustment range for the
master gain adjustment knob and level adjustment
knobs between –∞and –3 dB. The factory default
setting is –∞.
3TO VTR connector (D-sub, 15-pin)
Connect to the VIDEO CONTROL connector of the
HDW-500 or the VIDEO CONTROL connector of a
PFV-series. For the connection, use an optional RCC-
1502H/1505H/1510H/1530H remote control cable.

Output Selection Section
The output selection section selects the output signal to
which the adjustments in the level adjustment section
apply. When you press one of these buttons, the newly
selected button lights.
Changing the output selection makes all of the
adjustment knobs apply to the selected signal. It is not
possible to make a multiple signal selection.
1HD button
Press this to select the high definition video output
signal.
2D1 button
Press this to select the D1 video output signal.
3D2 button
Press this to select the D2 video output signal.
4IMAGE ENHANCER button
Press this to carry out image enhancer adjustments.
When the HKPF-525 HD-NTSC Down-Converter
Board is connected
Only the D2 and IMAGE ENHANCER buttons
operate.
When the HKPF-1125 525-HD Up-Converter
Board is connected
Only the HD and IMAGE ENHANCER buttons
operate.
Memory Section
In the memory section you can save and recall up to 99
sets of settings in the internal memory.
1MEMORY ADDR. (address) indicator
This shows a memory address in the range 01 to 99.
When DIP switch 2 on the internal board is set
to the ON position
The MEMORY ADDR. indicator displays the current
values and settings for each adjustment knob. When
the STORE or LOAD button is pressed, the memory
address is displayed. When loading or storing is
completed, the current values and settings are
displayed again.
2STORE button
Press this button to store the current adjustment setting
values. Use the –/+ buttons to display the address in
the MEMORY ADDR. indicator, then press the
STORE button once more to carry out the saving
operation.
3LOAD button
Press this button to recall current adjustment setting
values. Use the –/+ buttons to display the recall
address in the MEMORY ADDR. indicator, then press
the LOAD button once more to carry out the recall
operation.
4CANCEL button
After pressing the STORE button or LOAD button,
press this button to cancel the operation.
5–/+ buttons
During a save or recall operation, use these to set the
address shown in the MEMORY ADDR. indicator.
Press the + button to increase the address, and the
– button to decrease the address.

Carry out the following adjustment, according to the
output selection. Pressing the UNITY button returns to
the center value (the factory default setting), and the
button and the “U” indicator light.
When HD is selected: Master gain adjustment
(simultaneously adjust the Y/PB/PRsignals)
When D1 is selected: Master gain adjustment
(simultaneously adjust the Y/B–Y/R–Y signals)
When D2 is selected: Not used
Level Adjustment Section
In the level adjustment section you can adjust the
output signal selected in the output selection section.
When IMAGE ENHANCER is selected in the output
selection section, you can make adjustments for the
image enhancer.

2HD-NTSC•NTSC-HD conversion mode selection
buttons
The following three modes can be selected for the HD-
NTSC down-conversion and NTSC-HD up-conversion
mode. The button that you press lights, indicating the
current selection.
Down-converter (HD-NTSC Down-Convertion)
CROP mode: The sides of the HDTV image are
cropped (aspect ratio 4:3). You can adjust the
horizontal position of the cropping with the H
CROP adjustment knob.
LETTER BOX mode: The HDTV image appears in
a slot, with its aspect ratio (19:6) unchanged.
SQUEEZE mode: The HDTV image (aspect ratio
16:9) is compressed horizontally to fit the NTSC
image (aspect ratio 4:3).
Up-converter (NTSC-HD Up-Convertion)
CROP mode: The NTSC image appears in a slot,
with its aspect ratio (4:3) unchanged. You can
adjust the horizontal position of the HDTV image
with the H CROP adjustment knob.
LETTER BOX mode: The sides of the NTSC image
are cropped (aspect ratio 16:9). You can adjust the
vertical position of the cropping with the V
LETTER adjustment knob.
SQUEEZE mode: The NTSC image (aspect ratio
4:3) is expanded horizontally to fit the HDTV
image (aspect ratio 16:9).
3Y/Y/VIDEO/DETAIL GAIN adjustment knob
and UNITY button
Carry out the following adjustment, according to the
output selection. Pressing the UNITY button returns to
the center value (the factory default setting), and the
button and the “U” indicator light.
When HD is selected: Y signal level adjustment
When D1 is selected: Y signal level adjustment
When D2 is selected: Video output signal gain
adjustment
When IMAGE ENHANCER is selected: Detail
gain (sharpness of edge enhancement) adjustment

PRESET button
Carry out the following adjustment, according to the
output selection. Pressing the PRESET button returns
to the minimum value (the factory default setting), and
the “MIN” indicator lights. (When IMAGE
ENHANCER is selected the center value is selected.)
When HD is selected: Sync phase fine adjustment
(Coupled to the SYNC PHASE knob. One whole
turn of the FINE knob corresponds to a change of
one step in SYNC PHASE.)
When D1/D2 is selected: Sync phase fine adjustment
(Coupled to the SYNC PHASE knob. One whole
turn of the FINE knob corresponds to a change of
one step in SYNC PHASE.)
When IMAGE ENHANCER is selected: H/V
RATIO setting (ratio of horizontal and vertical
edge enhancement settings)
9–/CROSS COLOR/GAMMA adjustment knob

Carry out the following adjustment, according to the
output selection. Pressing the PRESET button sets the
center value (the factory default setting).

To carry out an output signal adjustment with this unit,
first select the output signal to which the adjustment
applies, then make the adjustment with the control
knobs.
1Press one of the HD, D1, and D2 buttons in the
output selection section, turning it on.
The indicators in the level adjustment section light
according to the selected signal, and show the
items which can be adjusted.
It is not possible to press two or more buttons
simultaneously and turn them it.
2Turn the knobs in the level adjustment section to
make the adjustment.
To set the center value (“unity level”)
Press the UNITY button. The button and the “U”
indicator light.
Pressing the UNITY button once more turns it off, and
returns the settings to their previous values.
To disable a specific adjustment knob
To disable a specific adjustment knob so that the
corresponding setting cannot be accidentally changed,
hold down the CANCEL button and press the UNITY
button or PRESET button.
The indicator goes off, and the adjustment knob no
longer operates.
To enable the adjustment knob again, hold down the
CANCEL button and press the UNITY button or
PRESET button once more.
Master gain adjustments
The MASTER adjustment knob adjusts the overall
output level, based on the Y signal level. If the setting
of the PBor PRsignal would be outside the setting
range, the setting takes the limit value of the range.

You can use this unit to control the image enhancer
built into an HD Digital VTR HDW-500, HD-NTSC
Down-Converter Board HKPF-525 or 525-HD Up-
Converter Board HKPF-1125, and adjust the edge
enhancement of the output signal.
1Press the IMAGE ENHANCER button.
2Select the conversion mode.
Press one of the CROP, LETTER BOX, and
SQUEEZE buttons.
Down-converter (HD-NTSC down-convertion)
•Edge crop mode (CROP button)
To adjust the horizontal position of the
cropping
Turn the H CROP adjustment knob. For fine
adjustment, hold down the CROP button and turn the
H CROP adjustment knob.
•Letter box mode (LETTER BOX button)
•Squeeze mode (SQUEEZE button)
Image Enhancer Adjustments
The sides of the HDTV image are cropped, reducing its
width by 1/4.
The HDTV image appears in a slot, with its aspect ratio
unchanged at 16:9.
The HDTV image (aspect ratio 16:9) is compressed
horizontally to fit the NTSC image (aspect ratio 4:3).
Up-converter (NTSC-HD up-conversion)
•Edge crop mode (CROP button)
To adjust the horizontal position of the HDTV
image
Turn the H CROP adjustment knob. For fine
adjustment, hold down the CROP button and turn the
H CROP adjustment knob.
•Letter box mode (LETTER BOX button)
To adjust the vertical position of the cropping
Turn the V LETTER adjustment knob. For fine
adjustment, hold down the LETTER BOX button and
turn the V LETTER adjustment knob.
•Squeeze mode (SQUEEZE button)
3Make the image enhancer adjustments.
H CROP•V LETTER adjustment knob
Adjust the horizontal position for cropping in edge
crop mode with down-converter, and the horizontal
position of HDTV image in edge crop mode and
the vertical position for cropping in letter box
mode with up-converter.
DETAIL GAIN adjustment knob
Adjust the sharpness of edge enhancement within

LIMITER adjustment knob
Adjust the maximum limit to detail added to
enhance the original signal.
CRISP adjustment knob
Adjust the amplitude setting for not enhancing
small-amplitude signals, to be regarded as noise.
DEPEND adjustment knob
Adjust the luminance range for edge enhancement
on the luminance level of the signal.
FREQUENCY adjustment knob
Adjust the center frequency for edge enhancement.
H/V RATIO adjustment knob
Adjust the ratio of horizontal and vertical edge
enhancement settings.
GAMMA adjustment knob
Adjust the gradient of the gamma correction curve.
Edge enhancement
In the high frequency range of the signal required for
image sharpness, there are often small amplitude
components, and simple enhancement would also
increase the noise component (high frequency small
amplitude components).
Use the CRISP and DEPEND knobs to set an
appropriate range, then adjust the sharpness with the
DETAIL GAIN knob.

You can display the setting value for each adjustment
of the output signals and image enhancer in the
MEMORY ADDR. indicator in the memory section.
To display the values
Set DIP switch 2 on the internal board to the ON
position.
For details of the settings of the DIP switches, refer to
Chapter 2, “Installation,” in the Maintenance Manual.
Changing the display
There are two methods of achieving this, as follows.
Turn an adjustment knob
The displayed item changes.
Press the –/+ buttons
Without the values changing, the displayed item
changes.
The level indicator (green) for the adjustment knob
corresponding to the displayed item flashes.
When you press the STORE or LOAD button, until the
save or recall operation is completed, the MEMORY
ADDR. indicator shows the memory address.
Note
When the output selection buttons are pressed, the
contents of the selected item are displayed.

change it.
The addresses are in the range 01 to 99.
Press the + button to increase the address, and the
– button to decrease the address.
3Press the STORE button once again.
This saves the settings, and the flashing is stopped.
When DIP switch 2 on the internal board is set to
the ON position, the MEMORY ADDR. indicator
returns to showing adjustment and setting values.
To cancel the operation
Press the CANCEL button.

returns to showing adjustment and setting values.
To cancel the operation
