1 Introduction
Sundström welding shield SR 592 together with the fan unit SR 500/SR 700 and approved
filters are included in the Sundstrom fan-assisted respiratory protective device system
conforming to EN 12941/EN 12942:1998 and the Powered Air Purifying Respirator (PAPR)
system conforming to AS/NZS 1716:2012. The breathing hose must be connected to the fan
unit equipped with filters. The above atmospheric pressure generated in the head-top
prevents particles and other pollutants from being admitted into the breathing zone.
The welding shields in combination with fan/compressed air is designed specifically for
protection against harmful gases, radiation and spatter during welding, flame-cutting, grinding
and similar work
The equipments can be used as an alternative to filter respirators in all situations in which
these are recommended. This applies particularly if the work is physically demanding, warm
or of long duration. When selecting the head-top, some of the factors that should be
considered are as follows:
•Types of pollutants
•Concentrations
•Work intensity
•Protection requirements in addition to respiratory protective device.
The risk analysis should be carried by a person who has suitable training and experience in
the area.
1.1 Warnings/limitations
Note that there can be national differences in the regulations for use of respiratory protective
equipment.
Do not use the equipment in environments:
•that are Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH).
•where the ambient air is oxygen-enriched air or does not have a normal oxygen content.
•where the pollutants are unknown.
Do not use the equipment:
•without the face seal of the head-top against the face is assured. The face seal must firmly
come in contact with the face to form the pressure that is necessary for establish the correct
protection factor. This may be difficult to achieve if the user has a beard or sideburns.
•if the welding filter is damaged. Change the welding filter immediately if it is found to be
damaged.
•without checking that the welding filter have the correct scale number for your work.

•If the welding shield is equipped with a toughened mineral glass lens, a protective lens
should be fitted on the inside of the toughened mineral glass lens.
Where the markings on the visor and visor frame are different, the lowest applies.
Stop the work immediately:
•if you find that breathing is difficult.
•if you experience dizziness, nausea, or any other noticeable physical effect.
•if you smell or taste the pollutants.
Note that:
•the equipment not is approved for use in an explosive atmosphere.
•the equipment, if the user is exposed to very high work intensity, a partial vacuum may
occur in the device during the inhalation phase, which may involve the risk of leakage into
the head-top.
•the equipment may reduce the protection factor if it is used in surroundings in which high
wind speeds occur.
•the equipment should never be lifted or carried in the breathing hose.
•materials that come into contact with the user’s skin may give rise to allergic reactions if
the user is sensitive.
•damaged or scratched protective lens must immediately be replaced.
•the welding shield must always be fitted with a protective lens in addition to the welding
filter.
•the fire safety rules always must be observed.
1.2 Delivery check
Check that the equipment is complete in accordance with the packing list, and undamaged.

2 Use
2.1 Installation
See also the user instructions for fan unit SR 500 and SR 700.

2.3 Functional check
The performance check should be checked on every occasion before the fan unit is used.
Start the fan unit. Place the head-top
in the flow meter. Grip the bag to seal
around the breathing hose. Grip the
flow meter tube with the other hand,
the tube will point upwards from the
bag.
Read the position of the ball in the
tube. This should hover at a level
with or slightly above the upper
marking on the tube, (175 l/min).
If minimum flow is not achieved,
check that
- the flow meter is held upright,
- the ball moves freely,
- the bag seals well around the hose.
The equipment is designed to
provide a warning if the air flow is
obstructed.
Provoke an air flow stoppage by
gripping the top part of the bag or by
shutting off the flow meter outlet. The
fan unit should then initiate alarms by
sound, light and vibrations. In usage
of compressed air the control valve
will warn by sound.

2.4 Putting the welding shield on and adjustments
Note that the equipment must always have supplied air before putting on. See the user
instructions for fan unit SR 500/SR 700 whichever is used.
If necessary, adjust the head harness, see Fig. 7
Height adjustment.
A - how high the welding shield sits on the head
Angle adjustment between shield and head harness
B - the angle against the shield
Space adjustment between shield and head harness.
C - the space to the shield
Width adjustment of the head harness.
D - adjustment of the width of the head harness.
Raise the visor and put the welding
shield on. Fig. 6

Lower the visor unit by pulling the
face seal down under your chin.

Insert a finger between your chin and
the face seal and run the finger along
the contact surface of the face seal
all the way round to check that it fits
well and comfortable against the
face. Fig 9.
Adjust the comfort of the face seal
with the drawstring. Fig 10.

2.5 Taking off the welding shield
Do not take off the equipment until clear of the hazardous area.
See also the user instructions for fan unit SR 500 and SR 700 whichever is used.
3 Maintenance
The person who is responsible for cleaning and maintenance of the equipment must have
suitable training and be well acquainted with work of this type.
3.1 Cleaning
Sundström cleaning tissues SR 5226 are recommended for daily care.
If the equipment is more heavily fouled, the sweatband can be washed with a mild soap
solution.
If necessary, spray the face shield with 70 % ethanol or isopropanol solution for disinfection.
Wipe the plastic protective lens carefully, since they are
sensitive to scratching.
Automatic welding filters are very sensitive to moisture.
Use only a dry polishing cloth.
NOTE! Never use solvents for cleaning.
3.2 Storage
After cleaning, store the equipment in a dry and clean place at room temperature. Avoid
exposing it to direct sunlight.
Check and adjust so that the
breathing hose runs along your back
and that it is not twisted. Fig. 11.
