1. Description of Product
This chapter gives important basic information about the product and its prescribed use.
All technical details of the machine are put together as a general arrangement.
1.1. General
The WIDOS HRG 14, Se gm e nt has been designed for heating element butt w elding of pipes
and fittings out of PE from OD 1000 - 1400.
This machine is a light-w eight solid heat ring w elding machine for usage particularly in
cramped problematic places.
The basic machine HRG 14 (1000 -1400 mm) can be provided w ith reducer inserts for
clamping and w elding smaller dimensions.
Both w elding cylinders are plugged and can be combined w ith all HRG-devices.
A second hydraulic aggregate w ith hydraulic clamping cylinders is optionally available.
The ring heating element is nonstick-coated, electronically controlled and supervised
according to DVS guideline 2208.
The w elding cylinders w ith hydraulic aggregate, the clamping cylinders w ith hydraulic
aggregate and the electronic control apparatus for the heating element can be used w ith all 4
models w hich is a big economic advantage of the device.
1.2. Safety Measures
In case of w rong use, w rong operation or w rong maintenance, the machine itself or products
standing nearby can be damaged or destroyed.
Persons being in the endangered area may be injured.
Therefore these w orking instructions have to be thoroughly read and the corresponding
safety regulations must be necessarily adhered to.
1.3. Conformity
The machine corresponds in its construction to the valid recommendations of the
European Community as w ell as to the according European standard specifications.
The development, manufacturing and mounting of the machine w ere made very
caref ully.

2. Safety Rules
The base for the safe handling and the fault-free operation of this machine is the know ledge
of the basic safety indications and rules.
•These w orking instructions contain the most important indications to run the machine
safely.
•The safety indications are to be f ollow ed by all persons w orking on the machine.
2.1. Explanation of the Symbols and Indications
In the w orking instructions, follow ing denominations and signs are used for dangers:
This symbol means a possible danger f or the life and the health of persons.
•The non-respect of these indications may have heavy consequences for the
health.
This symbol means a possible dangerous situation.
•The non-respect of these indications may cause light injuries or damages on
goods.
This symbol gives important indications for the proper use of the machine.
•The non-respect of these indications may conduct to misfunctions and
damages on the machine or on goods in the surrounding.
The regulations for the prevention of accidents are valid (UVV).
2.2. Obligations of the Owner
The ow ner is obliged only to let persons w ork at the machine w ho
•know about basic safety and accident prevention rules and are instructed in the
handling of the machine, as w ell as w ho
•have read and understood the safety chapter of this manual and certify this by their
signature.
•The safety-conscious w orking of the staff has to be checked in regular intervals.

2.3. Obligations of the Worker
All persons w ho are to w ork at the machine are obliged before w orking:
•to follow the basic saf ety and accident protection rules.
•to have read and understood the safety chapter and the w arnings in this
manual and to confirm by their signature that they have w ell understood them.
•to inform themselves about the functions of the machine bef ore using it.
2.4. Measures of Organisation
•All equipment required for personal safety is to be provided by the ow ner.
•All available safety equipment is to be inspected regularly.
2.5. Information about Safety Precautions
•The w orking instructions have to be permanently kept at the place of use of the machine.
They are to be at the operator's disposal at any time and w ithout much effort.
•All safety and danger indications on the machine have to be in a clear readable condition.
•Every time the machine changes hands or is being rent to third persons, the w orking
instructions are to be sent along w ith and their importance is to be emphasized.
2.6. Instructions for the Staff
•Only skilled and trained persons are allow ed to w ork at the machine.
•It must be clearly defined w ho is responsible for transport, mounting and dismounting,
starting the operation, setting and tooling, operation, maintenance and inspection,
repair and dismounting.
•A person w ho is being trained may only w ork at the machine under supervision of an
experienced person.
2.7. Dangers while Handling the Machine
The machine WIDOS HRG 14, Se g m e n t is constructed according to the latest technical
standard and the acknow ledged technical safety rules. How ever, dangers for the operator or
other persons standing nearby may occur. Also material damages are possible.
The machine may only be used
•according to the purpose-oriented usage;
•in safety technical impeccable status.
Disturbances which may affect the safety of the machine must be cleared immediately.

2.8. Dangers caused by Electric Energy
Only skilled persons are allow ed to w ork at electrical appliances !
•The electrical equipment of the machine has to be checked regularly.
Loose connections and damaged cables have to be replaced immediately.
•Protect the heating element f rom rain and dropping w ater (if need be use a w elding tent).
•According to VDE 0100, the use on construction sites is only allow ed w ith a pow er
distributor w ith a FI-safety sw itch.
2.9. Specific Dangers
2.9.1. Danger of being burnt by Heating Element and Welding Area
You can burn yourself, inflammable materials can be ignited!
The heating element is heated up to more than 200° C !
•Do not touch the surfaces of the heating element.
•Do not leave the heating element unsupervised.
•Take enough safety distance to inflammable materials.
•Wear saf ety gloves.
2.9.2. Danger of Stumbling over Electric Wires
•Make sure that no person has to step over the w ires of heating element, planer and the
hydraulic aggregate.
•Lay the w ires in such a w ay that the danger is kept to a minimum.
2.9.3. Danger of Squeezing by the Guideways
Do not stand or put hands betw een clamped pipe ends.
Do not touch the piston rod of the cylinder and the linear guides during operation.

2.9.4. Danger of Catching Clothes by the Planer
You can cut yourself or even get bones broken !
•Wear clothes tight to the body.
•Do not w ear rings or jew ellery during the w ork.
•If necessary, w ear a hair-net.
•Alw ays put the planer back into the reception box after and before each use.
•Transport the planer by means of a lifting device. Do not touch the surfaces.
•Alw ays secure the planer by means of the safety bolt w hen planing or w hen it is placed
in the reception box.
•Sw itch the planer on only for usage.
If the planing pressure is too high, there is the danger that the planer tilts! For that reason
do not press the pipe ends stronger than necessary against the planer.
2.10. Structural Modifications on the Machine
•No modifications, extensions or reconstructions may be made on the machine w ithout
permission of the manufacturer.
•Machine parts w hich are not in a perfect condition are to be replaced immediately.
•Only use original WIDOS spare and w ear parts.
•In case of purchase orders please alw ays state the machine number !
2.11. Warranty and Liability
Fundamentally our "General Sales and Delivery Conditions" are valid.
They are at the ow ner's disposal latest w hen signing the contract.
Guarantee and liability demands ref erring to personal injuries or damages on objects are
excluded if they are caused by one or several of the follow ing reasons:
•not using the machine according to the prescriptions;
•inexpert transport, mounting, starting, operating, and maintenance of the machine;
•running the machine w ith defective or not orderly mounted safety appliances;
•ignoring the information given in this manual;
•structural modifications on the machine w ithout permission;
•unsatisfactory checking of parts of the machine w hich are w orn out;
•repairs performed in an inexpert w ay;
•in case of catastrophes and force majeure.

3. Functional Description
Basically, the international and national guidelines are to be
follow ed !
The plastic pipes are clamped in the clamping rings.
If the pipe ends are not plane and parallel, the front sides of the pipes should be cut plane
and parallel by means of a planer and the misalignment of the pipes is to be checked.
Then the heating element is inserted and the pipes are pressed against the heating element
under defined adjusting pressure. This process is called "adjusting".
After the prescribed bead height being reached, pressure is reduced, the heating time
begins. The f unction of this time is to heat up the pipe ends.
After expiration of the heating time, the slides are opened, the heating element is
removed quickly and the pipes are driven together again. The time gap f rom the removal of
the heating element to joining the pipes is called change over time.
The pipes are joined under prescribed w elding pressure and then cool dow n under pressure
(cooling time).

4. Operating and Indicating Elements
4.1. Elements on the Standard Version

achieved is kept (also by means of the built-in hydraulic
accumulator);
- Slightly to the right side (position pressureless): a possibly
existing pressure is released w ithout opening the machine.
Due to the hydraulic accumulator, it takes about 10 s until
the pressure is completely released.
- To the right side: movable clamping ring opens.

4.3. Extras: Planer

safety bolt, the supporting fork moves into direction of

4.3.2. Sw itching the Planer on and off
The planer is sw itched on/off at the protective motor
sw itch (see photo). It is sw itched on at the black
button and sw itched off again at the red one.
The red button serves also as overload protection
w hich means that it sw itches the planer off
automatically if the pressure onto the planer is too
high. In this case, release pressure and start again the
planer w ith the black button.
If the red control lamp lightens, the planer turns in the w rong direction. Change
absolutely the turning direction.
4.3.3. Working with the Planer
For inserting and operating the planer, the
safety bolt for the planer support must be
removed by turning it into direction of the arrow
and pulling it out. The supporting fork is hanging
dow nw ards now .
Insert the planer by means of a crane betw een
the clamping tools, the supporting forks are
hereby attached in the locking forks.
Now necessarily insert again the safety bolt
for the planer support and tighten it again by
turning and pressing in (w hen releasing the
safety bolt, the handle must sw ing donw ards;
otherw ise the bolt is not inserted correctly).
Alw ays plane in direction of the groove (knife).
The on/off sw itch of the planer is situated at the
planer plug.
For lifting-off the planer, remove the safety bolt
again and lift off the planer by means of a
crane.

4.3.4. Maintenance / Repair
•Check the stress of the drive chain in the planer and tighten again if necessary (by means
of the screw for chain tightening at the front or - after dismounting the cover sheet - by
means of the chain tightener w heel at the rear side).
•Grease the drive chain regularly.
•Also grease regularly the teflon friction free guide (e.g. w ith teflon spray) at the gap
betw een carrier piece and cover sheet.
•Never lay the planer on its knives.
•Check the knives of the planer for sharpness, turn them if necessary (grinded on both
sides, max. thickness of the cuttings: 0,2 mm !).
4.4. Extras: Angle Setting at the Clamping Device
For w elding angles, each clamping ring can be turned for max. 11,25°.
For that purpose, unscrew both hexagon screw s (1) on the adapter plate, set the clamping
ring to the desired angle (up to 11,25°) and tighten again the hexagon screw s (1).
Take care that the clamping rings do not touch each other at the top.

5. Starting and Operating
The instructions of this chapter are supposed to initiate in the operation of the machine and
lead during the appropriate starting of the machine.
This includes:
- the saf e operation of the machine;
- using all the possible options of the machine;
- economic operation of the machine.
5.1. Safety Indications
•The machine may only be operated by initiated and authorized persons.
For the qualification, a plastic w elding exam can be taken according to DVS and DVGW.
•In situations of danger for persons and the machine, the mains plug has to be unplugged
immediately.
•After completion of the w elding w ork and during breaks the machine has to be sw itched
off. Further take care that no unauthorized person has access.
•According to VDE 0100, the use on construction sites is only allow ed w ith a pow er
distributor w ith a FI-security protective sw itch.
Check the oil level of the hydraulic system before each starting of the machine
in order to avoid damages on the pump.
If necessary, add hydraulic oil of the quality HLPD 32.
The heating element surfaces must be clean, especially non greasy,
therefore they need to be cleaned shortly before each w elding or in case of
dirtiness by means of a fibre-free paper and a cleaning agent (e.g. PE –
cleaner or pipe cleaning tissues w hich are available at the WIDOS company).
The anti-adhesive coating of the heating element must remain undamaged
in the w orking area.
Due to high fire risk, the heating element may be only cleaned in cold condition.
Take care that all hydraulic and electric connections are connected.
Make sure that pump and planer are connected in a w ay that they turn in right-
hand direction, if need be correct by means of the phase converter situated in
the plug.
•Take into account the surrounding conditions:
The w elding may not be perf ormed under direct sun rays influence.
Use a w elding umbrella if necessary.
•If the surrounding temperature is under 5°C, measures have to be taken:
Use a w elding tent or preheat the pipe ends if necessary.

5.2. Setting the Heating Element Temperature
Display = Display of the actual value
Push shortly the button P (1), the display show s <SP>, change desired value w ith buttons
 (2)  (3). Push shortly the button P (1), actual temperature is displayed again (or automatic
change after 30s). During heating up to desired value, the control lamp K2 (4) is on. As soon
as the desired temperature is reached, the control lamp K2 (4) is blinking.
5.3. Planing Process
•The pipes have to be clamped for the planing process in such a w ay that the pipe ends
project at least for 110 mm to the inside at the left and at the right clamping ring.
•Planing should be performed w ith a pressure of about 20 bar.
•Insert the planer betw een the clamping devices by means of a crane and lock the
supporting fork.
•Sw itch on the planer at the sw itch and plane the pipe ends until a revolving cutting has
been formed (3x).
•Move the pipe ends aw ay from each other until the cutting gets off. Sw itch off the planer
not until now.
•Take out the safety bolt and put the planer back into the reception box by means of the
crane.
