1Purpose of this document
The purpose of this document is to define the testing methods and acceptance criteria for the Z3-DM8168-
APP-41 board and the basic system operation when the Z3-DM8168-APP-41 board is paired with a Z3-
DM8168-MOD-34 processor module.
2Definition of terms
This document contains references to several terms as follows:
Z3-DM8168-APP-41:
This is the application board containing two HDMI input interfaces, one HDMI output interfaces and all
the I/O connectors. The Z3-DM8168-MOD-34 CPU module plugs into this board.
Although this document refers to the board as Z3-DM8168-APP-41, the actual part number might differ.
Specifically, the “1” digit of the “-41” suffix indicates a PCB revision which is prone to change.
Z3-DM8168-MOD-34:
This is the Z3 standard module based on the DM8168 processor, without I/O jacks onboard. As with the
Z3-DM8168-APP-41, although the document refers to the module by the Z3-DM8168-MOD-34 name,
the exact part number may change.
Test terms:
The sections describing the acceptance test contain a bulleted list of actions to be performed by the tester:
Verify: means that the tester should check to verify that the actual result is consistent with the
expectations. If the result is consistent, then the test is successful. Otherwise the test fails.
Check: is used to ask the tester to determine the state or condition of something. The result of the check is
used to make decisions about test procedure. It does not determine pass/fail status.
Other keywords are instructing the tester to follow procedure.
3Test setup

A PC computer is used to provide the serial console terminal necessary to control the Z3 system. The
recommended terminal program is Teraterm, a terminal emulation application that is freely available on the
Internet. Teraterm can be downloaded from http://www.tucows.com/preview/195282.
The PC computer is also used to run VLC, a freely available streaming media player. VLC can be downloaded
from http://www.videolan.org/.
The PC computer must be fast enough so that VLC can decode H.264 video at 1080p60 and keep up with real
time.
The tests require a video player to source video to the HDMI inputs. Since the Z3-DM8168-APP-41 board
does not accept HDCP encrypted content, the user must ensure that the video player does not use HDCP
encryption. Usually Blu-Ray players will always enable HDCP on their HDMI output, so Blu-Ray players are
not suitable sources.An example of video source without HDCP encryption is the Zinwell ZIN-5005HD.
You can get one of these players from Amazon.com.
Please use a 3.5” SATA hard disk drive with a SATA-II or SATA-III interface, formatted with a VFAT or EXT3
partition. Make sure to use a power supply capable to support the power usage of the drive.
It is necessary to use good quality HDMI cables, rated for 1080p60 operation. Inferior cables can introduce too
much degradation and cause the HDMI connection to not function properly or not at all.

3.2 Basic setup
The initial setup consists of locating all necessary components, loading the required software into the PC
computer and connecting the system.
If not already done, install VLC on the Windows PC. Copy the “multi_video_audio_ulaw_16000_1ch.sdp” file
provided to the desktop or some other easily accessible folder. Start VLC and open a video file to make sure
that VLC is installed correctly and is capable of decoding video files. Stop VLC but leave it open.
Configure the Teraterm serial port parameters to 115200 baud, 8 bits, 1 stop bit, no parity. Connect the serial
port cable from the 2.5mm console jack on the Z3-DM8168-APP-41 board to the serial port of the PC, using
the null modem adapter if necessary. Connect the power supply to the Z3-DM8168-APP-41 board and verify
that the computer displays the boot sequence. This proves that Teraterm is configured properly and it is
working. Unplug the power supply.
Configure the Windows PC to use a static IP address of 192.168.1.111 with netmask 255.255.0.0. The gateway
and DNS entries are not important and can be left blank.
Connect one HDMI cable between the video player and the video monitor. Set the video player to play a video
clip in a loop, with the resolution of 1080p60. Make sure that the video is playing correctly on the monitor.
Disconnect the HDMI cable from the video player and connect it to the HDMI video output jack of the Z3-
DM8168-APP-41 board.
The H.264 decoder and HDMI output test requires that the file “dectest.h264” be placed in the root directory
of the USB mass storage device. Please copy the file to the device prior to starting the tests.
Ensure that the boot jumpers on the Z3-DM8168-MOD-34 are set for NAND boot. Please consult the
module’s hardware specification for instructions on how to set the boot jumpers.
4Acceptance tests
Execute the steps in section 3.2 above to ensure that the test equipment is functioning and configured properly.
Once the setup is verified, the tests below can be executed.
Please make sure to understand the meaning of certain keywords in the test sections, as described in section 2
above.

4.1 Physical embodiment
Visual inspection of physical design:
Verify that the Z3-DM8168-MOD-34 plugs into Z3-DM8168-APP-41 board.
Verify that the Z3-DM8168-APP-41 board contains
o2 HDMI jacks for video input
o1 HDMI jack for video output
o1 USB type A jack
o1 SATA jack
o1 Ethernet RJ-45 jack
o1 DC power input jack
Verify that the Z3-DM8168-APP-41 board has 4 holes for mechanical mount, near the board edges.
Verify that the board is free of debris, is assembled properly and looks safe to apply power.
4.2 Basic subsystems
This test verifies that the power supply, CPU, memory and the console port are working as expected.
These components can be proven just by being able to see the messages printed as the board boots, since that
necessarily means that power is present, the CPU is executing code, memory is not corrupt and the console
port is functional.
Ensure that the serial cable is connected between the console jack of the Z3-DM8168-APP-41 and the
computer.
Ensure that Teraterm is configured for the appropriate serial port, and set to 115200,N81.
Insert the power supply plug into the power jack.
Verify, by observing the messages on the console, that the DM8168 system boots Linux.
If the system boots to the operations menu, please use option “X” to go to a shell prompt.
It may be necessary to login as “root” to obtain a shell prompt. No password is needed.
Verify that Linux presents a shell prompt.
Verify that characters typed on the console at the shell prompt are echoed back and appear on the screen.
Verify that shell commands such as “ls” are executed.
4.3 USB interface
Ensure that no USB or SATA devices are connected.
Follow the procedure specified by section 4.2 above to obtain a shell prompt.
Issue a command “cat /proc/partitions” and note the output.

Insert the USB mass storage device.
Repeat the command “cat /proc/partitions”
Verify that the partitions present on the USB device are present in the list.
If the partition(s) on the USB media are formatted OK, then Linux should automatically mount the
volume and make it available for use. Usually Linux will mount storage devices at /media/sda1.
Enter the command “ls –l /media/sda1” and check to see if the files present in the USB device
are listed.
If not, the most probable cause is that the USB device is not formatted correctly. Re-format the USB
device and repeat the procedure.
Unmount the device by entering the command “umount /media/sda1” and remove power.
4.4 SATAinterface
Remove the DC power plug from the DC power jack of the Z3-DM8168-APP-41.
Remove any USB devices from the USB jack.
Connect a SATA cable between the SATA jack of the DM8168-APP-41 board and the SATAdisk drive.
Connect and turn on power to the SATAdisk drive.
Follow the procedure specified by section 4.2 above to turn on the system and obtain a shell prompt.
Issue a command “cat /proc/partitions”.
Verify that the partitions present on the SATAdevice are present in the list.
If the partition(s) on the SATA media are formatted OK, then Linux should automatically mount the
volume and make it available for use. Usually Linux will mount storage devices at /media/sda1.
Enter the command “ls –l /media/sda1” and check to see if the files present in the SATA device
are listed.
If not, the most probable cause is that the USB device is not formatted correctly. Re-format the USB
device and repeat the procedure.
Unmount the device by entering the command “umount /media/sda1” and remove power.
4.5 Ethernet interface
This test verifies that the Ethernet interface is functional by testing whether the Z3-DM1868-APP-41 can see
the network interface of the PC.
Connect the Ethernet patch cable from the RJ-45 jack of the Z3-DM8168-APP-41 to the Windows PC.
Follow the procedure specified by section 4.2 above to turn on the system and obtain a shell prompt.
Verify that the link LED on the Ethernet jack is lit, indicating that a link is established.

Issue a command “ifconfig”.
Note the IP address listed for the eth0 device. It should be something like 192.168.81.68.
On the Windows PC, get a DOS shell and enter the command “ping 192.168.81.68”, of course
adjusting the IP address according to the output of the “ifconfig” command.
If there are no responses to the ping command, troubleshoot. Pay special attention to Windows firewalls
and proper IP configuration
Verify that the Windows computer sees the responses to the ping command.
On the shell command prompt of the terminal, enter the command “ping 192.168.1.111”.
If there are no responses to the ping, troubleshoot. Pay special attention to the Windows firewall, anti-
virus programs and other Windows protectors.
Verify that the ping command receives responses.
Note: In order for the streaming encode test to succeed, it is necessary that both the Windows PC and the Z3-
DM8168 system are capable of initiating successful pings.
4.6 HDMI video output
This test verifies that the H.264 decoder and HDMI output interface are working by decoding a video file and
presenting it to the HDMI output.
Ensure that the file “dectest.h264” is present in the USB mass storage device.
Plug the USB mass storage device to the USB jack of the Z3-DM8168-APP-41.
Connect the HDMI output of the Z3-DM1868-APP-41 to the HDMI input of the monitor.
Power up the system and observe it booting.
If the system boots to the shell prompt, then enter the commands “cd /opt/z3” and
“./encdecdemo.sh” to reach the “H.264 file enc/dec demo” menu.
Use the “U” option to enter “dectest.h264” as the H.264 URL.
Check that the output is set to HDMI, use the “O” command if not.
Use the “S” command to start decoding.
Verify that the video plays on the video monitor.
4.7 HDMI input 1
This test verifies the HDMI input 1 by accepting video from that port. The interface is verified by displaying
the input video on the video monitor.
Ensure that the media player is properly setup to 1080p60 and is playing video in a loop.

Connect the HDMI output of the media player to the HDMI 1 input on the Z3-DM8168-APP-41.
Connect the HDMI output of the Z3-DM1868-APP-41 to the HDMI input of the monitor.
Connect the Ethernet patch cable from the RJ-45 jack of the Z3-DM8168-APP-41 to the Windows PC.
Ensure that VLC is running on the Windows PC.
Power up the system and observe it booting.
If the system boots to the shell prompt, then enter the commands “cd /opt/z3” and
“./encdecdemo.sh” to reach the “H.264 file enc/dec demo” menu.
Use the option “U” to enter “rtp://192.168.1.111” as the H.264 URL. Please note that this is the IP
address of the Windows PC.
If necessary, use the option “I” to select the HDMI1 input.
Use option “S” to start the streaming encoder.
Verify that the video input is shown on the video monitor.
4.8 HDMI input 2
This test verifies the HDMI input 2 by accepting video from that port. The H.264 encoder is also verified by
streaming the resulting H.264 video to the Windows PC. The PC can decode the video using VLC.
Follow the same procedure as for the HDMI input 1 shown in section 4.7 above, except:
oConnect the video cable from the media player to HDMI input 2.
oUse the option “I” to select the HDMI2 input instead of HDMI1.
Verify that the video from the HDMI input 2 appears on the video monitor.
4.9 H.264 video encoder
This test step verifies that the H.264 video encoder is functional by encoding video from the HDMI input 1
and streaming it to the Windows PC. The Windows PC can decode the stream using VLC.
Follow the same procedure as for the HDMI input 1 shown in section 4.7 above.
On VLC running on the Windows PC, click on “Media” then “Open file”. Select the sdp file provided.
Verify that VLC plays the video being encoded.
