1.0 GENERAL INFORMATION
1.1 Preface
The Z3-MVE-40 is a 1 RU system that can encode up to 4x 1080i inputs from SDI simultaneously. It can
output the encoded content via one multiplexed DVB-ASI stream or via the Ethernet as RTP, UDP, TSRTP,
or RTMP streams. Control is through a GUI interface accessed via the Ethernet or through four buttons
and an LCD on the front panel. A USB port and two serial ports are also provided. The Z3-MVE-40’s
design makes it ideal for applications such as broadcast encoding, satellite uplinks, HD security video
servers, industrial applications, and transcoding.
2.0 QUICK START GUIDE
2.1 If You Have Received a System from Z3 with the Software Preloaded
To start working with the encoder, you can go straight to Section 6.0, “USING THE Z3-MVE-40 TO
ENCODE 4 CHANNELS INTO 4 UDP OR RTP STREAMS,” on page 11, or Section 7.0, “ USING THE Z3-MVE-40
TO ENCODE 4 CHANNELS INTO ONE DVB-ASI STREAM,” on page 34, or Section 8.0, “USING THE MVE-40 TO
ENCODE RTMP,” on page 41. The first describes setting up the Z3-MVE-40 to encode 4 channels and
streaming to UDP or RTP (using VLC as a client). It also describes dynamically changing the bitrate,
adjusting the TS rate, tuning for latency, using DHCP, and using resizing. The second describes
combining up to 4 channels into 1 stream and sending it out via ASI. The third describes encoding a
channel and sending it via RTMP to a Wowza server.
2.2 If You Already Have a System from Z3 and Need to Update the Firmware
You can update the firmware via the web GUI interface by following the instructions in Section 9.2:
“Making a Firmware Update”, on page 44.

5.0 OPERATING CONTROLS
-A green Status Light indicates encoding has started for that channel.
-Details on what is shown on the LCD can be found on page 48.
-ASI Out2 outputs the same signal as ASI Out1.
-SDI In1-4 Loop output the values of SDI In 1-4. They can be used to feed the same input(s) into multiple
channels.

6.0 USING THE Z3-MVE-40 TO ENCODE 4 CHANNELS INTO 4 UDP OR RTP STREAMS
This section gives step-by-step instructions on using the Z3-MVE-40 to encode 4 1080i streams to UDP or RTP.
6.1 Set up the Video Sources
(1) Configure 4 SDI sources to output 1080i.
6.2 Connect the Z3-MVE-40
(2) Connect the Ethernet and power cord to the Z3-MVE-40.
(3) Next, connect each of the 4 video sources to “3G-SDI INPUT1-4.”
6.3 Power up the Z3-MVE-40
(4) Turn on the Z3-MVE-40:
(5) After 1-2 minutes, the IP address will appear on the LCD. Note this value of the IP address.

6.4 Open the Z3-MVE-40 Web GUI
(6) Take the IP address from step (5) and enter it into a web browser running on a Linux or Windows PC
connected to the Z3-MVE-40. You should see the Z3-MVE-40 Web GUI System Setup Page (shown in
Figure 8).
*Note: To be able to communicate with the Z3-MVE-40, the PC that you are communicating from needs
to have at least the same first two parts of the IP address as the Z3-MVE-40. For example, if the Z3-
MVE-40 has an IP address of 192.168.81.68, your PC would need to have an address of 192.168.x.y,
where x.y is anything but 81.68 (and not conflicting with any other equipment on your current
network). Note that the first two parts being the same are based on a value of netmask of 255.255.0.0.
If netmask were 255.255.255.0, for example, then the first three parts of the IP address would have to
be the same.
6.5 Open the Z3-MVE-40 Web GUI using ZFinder (Optional)
(7) Another option is to access the Z3-MVE-40 Web GUI using the included utility “ZFinder.” This requires
a Windows PC. To do this, first connect the Windows PC to the same network the Z3-MVE-40 is
connected to.
(8) Run the “ZFinder” PC Utility on this Windows PC. The ZFinder window appears. ZFinder does a scan
of the network and lists the location of all Z3 systems connected to the network. In this case, the Z3-
MVE-40 appears:
(9) Click on the Z3-MVE-40 entry in the window to select it. This will cause the “Edit Device,” “Open
Device,” and “Flash LEDs” boxes to activate.

(10) Click on “Open Device.” An Internet browser window opens (default browser used is FireFox) and
the Web GUI appears at the System Setup tab:
6.6 Set “Encoder No Resize” Mode
(11) To encode 4x 1080i inputs, you need to set the Z3-MVE-40 to “Encoder No Resize” mode. This is
done by selecting “Encoder No Resize” as the “Operating Mode” in the lower right corner of the
screen:

6.7 Configure CH1
(12) Click on the “CH1” tab just to the right of “MPTS.”
(13) Verify “Video Resolution” is set to “Follow input” or 1920x1080.
(14) Confirm “Output Format” is “UDP.”
(15) Change “Dest Address” to the IP address of the PC you are streaming to.
(16) Verify “Dest Port” is “5004.”
After you are finished, the CH1 tab should look like the following:

6.8 Configure CH2 –CH4
(17) Repeat the same steps for CH2 to CH4. The “Dest Port” settings should be 5006, 5008, and 5010
respectively for the remaining channels. Figure 11 to Figure 13 below show sample valid settings
for each channel.

6.9 Start Encoding
(18) Scroll to the bottom of any tab and click “Start All”.

(19) Click on the “Status” tab (just to the left of “MPTS”). You should see output bitrates, frame rates,
and resolutions for each channel:

6.10 Run VLC to View Stream
(20) Run VLC on your PC (version used in testing at Z3: 2.1.5).
(21) Select Media –Open Network Stream. In the box, type “udp://@192.168.0.6:5004”, where
“192.168.0.6” is the IP address of your PC, and 5004 is the value of “Dest Port” noted in step (16):
(22) Press “Enter.”
(23) You should now see video streaming to VLC:

6.11 Streaming RTP
The Z3-MVE-40 also supports streaming to RTP. The steps below show an example of using RTP for CH1.
This can also be done for CH2-CH4:
(24) In the CH1 configuration tab, click on “stop” to stop the current encoding session.
(25) Change “Output Format” from “UDP” to “RTP.”
(26) Click on “start” to start the RTP encoding session. At this point your settings should match the
following:
