Target groups and required qualifications
The product presented in this manual is part of aCAT III/IV environment wherevoltages are present that
containa potentialhazard of electric shock and/or burn. For this reason, only personnel who have a
thorough knowledge of the MV UPS and the industrial environment and have obtainedthe required
qualification may handle, install, operate,or maintainthe product.
The manual addresses personnel who areresponsible for unpacking, transportation, installation,
operation, and maintenanceof the MVUPS. The personnel shall carry out thelistedtasks in amanner
that does not cause physical harm or danger,and thatensures the safe and reliable functioning of the
product.
Handling and Installation
Handling
The personnel shall be skilledand experienced in unpacking andtransporting heavy equipment.
Mechanical installation
The personnel shall be qualified to prepare the installation site accordingto the site and equipment
requirements andto perform the installation accordingly.
Commissioning of the HiPerGuard must only be performed by qualified and
certified ABB personnel.
Electrical installation
The personnel shall have a soundknowledgeof the relevant electrical codes andspecifications covering
low and medium voltage equipment, be experienced with electrical wiring principles, and knowthe
electrical symbols typically used in wiring diagrams.
Operation
The personnel include all persons whooperatethe HiPerGuardfrom the Graphic Display Module (GDM).
Those people mustknowthe functions of the GDM, be adequately trainedfor the MV UPS, and
understand its operation process.
Maintenance
The personnel include all persons who:
– Are qualifiedto carry out preventiveand corrective maintenance on MV UPS as described in this
manual.
– Are thoroughly familiar with theproduct.
– Have a sound knowledgeof therelevant electricalcodes and specifications covering lowand medium
voltage equipment.
– Are able toassessthe hazards associatedwith the energy sourcesof theMV UPS system and act
correspondingly.
– Knowthe safe shutdown andgrounding procedures for the MV UPSsystem.
– Are familiarand understand the instructions contained in the Service manual.

Responsibilities of the user
It is theresponsibility of those in charge of theHiPerGuard MV UPSto ensure thateachperson involved
in the installation, operation or maintenance of the product has received the appropriate training and
has thoroughlyread and clearlyunderstood the instructions in this manual andthe relevant safety
instructions.
Intended use of equipment
Those inchargeof the HiPerGuardMV UPSshall ensurethattheproduct is onlyused asspecified in the
contractualdocuments, operated under the conditions stipulated in the technicalspecifications andon
the rating plateof the product, and serviced in the intervals as specified by ABB.
Use of theHiPerGuard MV UPSoutside the scope of the specifications is not permitted and canleadto
malfunction or hazardous situations. Intended equipment usealso implies that only spare parts
recommended and approvedby ABB maybe used.Unauthorized modifications andconstructional
changes of theHiPerGuardMV UPS cancause malfunction and result in hazardous situations. Therefore,
such modifications are not permitted.
Quality certificates and applicable standards
The following certificatesand conformity declarations are availablefrom ABB:
– ISO 9001certificatesstating that ABB Ltd in Napier has implemented and maintains amanagement
systemthat fulfils the requirements of the normative standards.
– EC conformity declaration.
– List of the standards the MVUPS complieswith:
•IEC62040-3 VI SS 111.
• IEC62477-2.
•IEC61000-6-2.
•WEEE.
• IEC60076 (for themedium voltage magnetics).

Deliverycomprises the following items:
– HiPerGuardMV UPSlow voltage Power Conversion Unit (PCU). This is a plinth with six enclosures
already installed and interwired.The sixenclosures are: DCT enclosure, APS enclosure, Utility
enclosure,3 x PE120 enclosures.
– HiPerGuard MV UPS Medium Voltage Magnetics (MVM) enclosure.
– Nuts, bolts, washers, brackets, plinth covers andothermetalwork partsrequiredto interconnect PCU
to MVM enclosure.
– Communicationsand fanpower cables tointerconnect PCU to MVM enclosure.
– Fiber cabletointerconnect HiPerGuard MV UPS to Medium Voltage Switchgear enclosure.

Identifying the delivery
The HiPerGuard and accessories are identified by the type code printed on the rating label. The label
provides information on the HiPerGuard MV UPS ratedvoltage,frequency, rated current and auxiliary
power supply.

Abbreviations & Terms
The following table lists terms and abbreviations users shouldbe familiar with when usingthis manual.
Some of the terms andabbreviations used in the manual areunique to ABB andmight differ from the
common use.
Abbreviation/Term Meaning
APS AuxiliaryPower Supply. APS is an enclosure that contains the MVUPS
switched-mode power supplies, remote input/outputmodules, control
circuits and auxiliary transformers.
Bypass isolate state A statewherethe MV UPS is not operating, input and output breakersare
opened, and the automatic bypass breakeris closed.
Bypass mode The term isused todescribethesystem in bypass (not operating).When in
bypassmode, the bypass breaker is closed, and the input and output
breakers are opened.
CXF Coupling Transformer. CXF is a transformerthat couples themedium
voltagenetwork to thelow voltage power converters.
DCT Direct Current Termination. DCT is an enclosure wherethe energy storage
cables are terminated and connectedto theMV UPSPE120 cabinets.
EMC
ElectromagneticCompatibility. All measures to suppress electromagnetic
disturbancescaused bydifferent electrical equipmentin the same
electromagneticenvironment,and to strengthen the immunity of the
equipment to such disturbances.
EOA End of Autonomy. EOA refers to the end of the specified back-up autonomy
timeof the energy storage.
EOD End of Discharge. EODrefers to the state of energystorage when itis fully
depleted.
GDM Graphical DisplayModule.Has thelocal HumanMachine Interface(HMI)and
it is located in the PE120-1 enclosure.
HUB Two HUB controllers arelocated in PE120-2 and PE120-3 cabinets respectively. The main function is to transfer theinformation tothe system
controller.
ILR Isolating LineReactor. ILR is amedium voltageimpedance connected in
series, between the gridand the load.
IM IndependentMode. When operating on this mode, the MV UPS disconnects from the gridby openingthe input circuit breaker and supplies the load
through the energy storage.

Island state A statewherethe MV UPS decided to go into independent modeby opening
the input circuit breaker and supplying the load through the energystorage.
Line voltage RMS lineto line voltageof the main power supplyof the MVUPS input.
LV Low Voltage. Voltage level up to 1000 Vac or 1500 Vdc.
MV Medium Voltage. Voltage level between 1 kVac and 35 kVac.
MVM Medium VoltageMagnetics. The MVM consists of thecouplingtransformer
and the isolating line reactor.
PCB Printed Circuit Board
PCC
Point of Common Coupling. The PCC isthe point in the electrical power
supply system wherethe responsibility of the utility changesto the
industrial customer. Theutility is responsible for providing clean voltage
and current with respect toharmonic distortion up to the PCC.
The industrial customer is responsiblenot to distort voltage and current by
its electrical systems
PCM PowerConditioning Mode. When operating on this mode, the MV UPS
continuously conditions theload voltage.
PCM_Active state A statewherethe gridinput voltageis out of thresholdand theMV UPSis
keeping the load voltage within specified limits while monitoring to decide
whether to disconnect from the grid.
PCM_Normal state A statewhere the gridinput voltageis within specified limits and the MV
UPS continuously conditions the loadvoltagetothe system nominal voltage
value while the utility is sup-plying the loadactivepower requirements.
PCS120 PowerConversion System 120. The PCS120 is the product platform for the
ABB power conditioning products.
PCU PowerConversion Unit. The PCU consists of theLV enclosures of the
HiPerGuard MV UPS unit.
PE120-N Platform Enclosure120. PE120 is the enclosurethatcontains several PCS120
modules. The product has three enclosures designatedas PE120-1, PE120-2
& PE120-3.
PEBB Power ElectronicBuilding Block
PE-E Protective Earth
PE-I Inverter Earth
Resynchronizing state A statewherethe MV UPS resynchronize to the grid inputvoltage and
commands the input circuit breaker to close when the grid voltage is back
and stable for reconnection.
RTD ResistanceTemperature Detector. The RTD is a temperature sensor where
the change in electrical resistance is used to measurethe temperature.

AutomaticBypass Switch. Represents the designation of the bypass circuit
breaker that bypasses the MV UPS system andconnects the grid directlyto
the load.This breakeris automaticallycontrolledby the MVUPS.
Sin Input Switch.Represents the designation of the input circuit breaker
connecting the MV UPSto the grid.
Smbp
Maintenance Bypass Switch. Represents the designation of the external
maintenance bypasscircuit breaker that bypasses the MV UPS system and
its automaticbypass switchgear and connects thegrid directly to the load.
This breakeris not controlled bythe MV UPS.
SC System Controller. Universal controllerlocated in the PE120-1 enclosure.
SOC Stateof Charge. SOC refers to the stateof chargeof the energystorage
connected to the MV UPS.
Sout Output Switch.Represents the designation of the output circuit breaker
connecting the MV UPSto the load.
Startingstate
A statewherethe MV UPS ramps its output voltagefrom zero to
input/output voltage magnitude, synchronizes to frequency andphase,
closesthe output and input circuit breakers and opens the automatic
bypass circuit breaker.
Stopping state A statewherethe MV UPS synchronizes the input tothe output voltage,
closesthe automaticbypass circuit breaker and opens theinput/output
circuit breakers.
UC Universal Controller
UPSS Uninterruptible Power Supply System. Refers to the HiPerGuard MV UPS unit (or multipleunits) in addition to the medium voltage switchgearand the
energystorage.
UPSU Uninterruptible Power Supply Unit.Refers toa singleHiPerGuardMV UPS
machine.
ZISC Impedance Isolated StaticConverter. ZISC refers to the architecture of the HiPerGuard MV UPS where the static power converters of the MV UPS are
isolated from the grid via an impedance.

voltageevenafter theopening of isolation switches.
DO NOT TOUCH components or connections that may have voltage present.
D A N G E R – High voltages
Lethal high voltages arepresentinside theMVM and MediumVoltage Switchgear
enclosures undernormaloperation or faultconditions.Do not remove anypanels or
guards. This mayonly be done bytrainedtechnical personnel after following the
stipulatedisolation, groundingand lock-out procedures.
DO NOT TOUCH components or connections that have voltage present.
D A N G E R – Stored charge
Storedcharge is present after the deviceis switched off. When the HiPerGuard is
powered down, lethal voltages will remainin the energy storage elements and the
completeHiPerGuardMV UPS should be considered live. To remove this hazard, energy
storage will needto be isolated and lockedoff, and filter capacitors discharged.
This mayonly bedone bytrained technical personnel while following the stipulated
isolation, grounding and lockout procedures.
D A N G E R – Protective covers
Normaloperation of this product requires all protective covers to be in place and all
doors closed and secured.
DA NG ER – Personal Protective Equipment
Ensuresafety glasses and other appropriate PPEare worn while working if any part of
the unit couldbe energized. Observe siterequirements for PPE while operating this
equipment.

1.2. General safety information
1.2.1. Operator duties
The scope of work for anoperator of the HiPerGuardis to control and monitor theHiPerGuard from the
GDM, remotestart/stop controls, or from theweb page. An operator is not normally authorized to
undertake anymaintenance, service,or repair work. The operator maybe authorized to provide
assistance to a maintenance, service,or repairtechnician, by performing his or her duties under the
direction of a service team.If so, the operator must bewearing PPE tothe same level as those of the
service team.
1.2.2. Before energization
Beforethe HiPerGuard is energized, inspect to makesure:
– Any maintenance work beingdone on theHiPerGuard has been completedand all tools and
equipment are removed.
– All covers onthe MVUPS enclosures are securely fastened, and all doors areclosed,locked,and/or
bolted.
1.2.3. In case of fire
In caseof firein the electrical room:
– Observe theestablished rules and regulations for fireprotection.
– Only fireman with appropriate personal protective equipment is allowed to enter the electrical room.
1.3. Possible residual risk
The following risks can arisefrom a HiPerGuardsystem and pose a hazard to people. These risksmust
therefore be considered by the system integrator and/or the plant owner when assessing the risks of
the machinery.
The HiPerGuard is a high energypower conversion machine.Components may be dislodged, or
damaged while being transported, installed, commissioned,operatedor serviced, due to,for example:
–External influence on,or damage to the equipment
– Wrong parameter settings
–Operation of the equipment outsidethe scope of thespecifications
–Faulty hardware.
Any one of thesefaults may cause thenoisy ejection of high temperature materialsand gases.
Hazardous touchvoltages can bepresent on the HiPerGuard system components caused by, for
example:
–Operation of the equipment outsidethe scope of thespecifications
–External influence on,or damage to the equipment
– Induced voltages by external equipment
–Condensation on equipment components or pollution
–Faulty hardware.
For all the abovereasons, alwaysoperatewith all sidepanels in place and all doors shut and latched.

2.1. Deployment guidelines

protection by allocating firewall solutions toeach network.
For secureremoteaccess,use a VPNconnection – theHiPerGuard MVUPS is not approvedby ABB for
direct Internet connection.The user of theproduct should beaware that theunsecurenature of the
Modbus TCPprotocol exposes the communication betweenthe product and thecontrol system.
Authentication and integrity of transmittedinformation is notprovidedby the protocol. This enables
certain types of attacks, such as man-in-the-middle attacks, eavesdropping attacks andreplayattacks
for instance. The main security is providedthrough monitoring cybersecurity, topology (asset
management) and correct operation ofthe data networks usingthecybersecurity monitoring modules
and features of thefirewalls and managedswitches.

3. Product Description
Overview
The ABB HiPerGuard MV UPS is a high-performance high-efficiency UPS system that ensures protection
from power quality events,enablingthe continuous conditioned power supply tosensitive and critical
loads.
Based on the ZISC (Impedance IsolatedStatic Converter) architecture, the HiPerGuard MVUPS uses a
special coupling reactor combined with PEBB120 inverter modulesto interfacefrom theutility to the
load. Thereactor acts as a barrier, preventing grid disturbances to reach the load and improves the
powerfactor seen from the gridside.
It is usedto protect sensitive loadsfrom thefull spectrum ofutility voltage events and combinedwith a
wide range of energystoragesolutionsABB’s ZISC provides autonomiesfromseconds to many minutes.
The equipment is connected to the medium-voltage network through theMV switchgear. Theinput
breaker connects the power supply to theMV UPS,which also has an active role in the normal operation.
The output breakerconnectsthe MV UPSto the load, and a bypass breaker is connected between the
whole MVUPS system, as shown in the singleline diagram.
