TroubleShooting:
If for any reason you are having difficulty operating your ALERT J5 please
refer to the following troubleshooting menu before contacting ACS Customer
Service.
Remedy/ What to Do
I can’t turn the ALERT J5 on Are the batteries in need of replacing ?
I cannot get a BAC result Make sure to provide a breath sample
correctly
I cannot see the display outside Adjust brightness of ALERT J5 in direct
sunlight.
I cannot set the time or date See the Menu section for instructions.
I cannot print the result Ensure that the J5 is connected properly.
Check distance if printing wirelessly (<1m).
The mouthpiece won’t connect Check to make sure correct mouthpiece is
being used. (Use pressure tube type only.)

When do I re-calibrate ?
Make sure you follow procedures for cali-
bration. An expiry message will prompt the
user to recalibrate ( 6 months /500 tests).

What’s New in ALERT J5 Technology Over Previous
Portable Breath Alcohol Testers ?
Easy Portability/ Adaptability
Breath alcohol detection has never been easier, the ALERT J5 provides an
evidential-capable solution in a small handheld package. Ideal for a range of
professional applications in law enforcement on land, air and sea, ALERT J5
does not require tricky installation wiring and is fully portable. Powered by
2 AA batteries, ALERT J5 ensures hundreds of tests between charges to give
you the reliability you can count on.
Improved Full Functionality & Menu Features
ALERT J5 brings added functionality to portable breath testing with a new
range of functions accessible from the LCD menu. Test recalls are now
possible to enable full archiving and printing of all recorded breath test
results. Users and administrators of ALERT J5 enabled alcohol monitoring
programs now have access to extremely detailed test data to assist with
program management.
New Sampling Mechanism / Breath Volume Reduction
The ALERT J5 uses a unique alcohol-specific fuel cell and pump system to
assess breath samples that requires less than 1% (1.2l) of the previous
breath volume to provide an accurate BAC evaluation. Also new is a large
backlit, LCD Screen to assist users with easy menu/function selection,
reducing training times and enabling users to become experts in operating
the J5 in a minimum amount of time.

Getting Started with the ALERT J5
1. Press either the left or right button to Turn the ALERT
J5 on. The READY screen appears as below:

2. Note that ALERT J5 LCD display has detailed information
on screen with time, status, battery strength indicator and
a help/menu option.
3. In the READY state, provide a breath sample for testing and
analysis - make sure to attach the mouthpiece as shown on
the next page.

Attaching the Mouthpiece (Pressure Tube)
Breath alcohol analysis requires the use of an new, sterile,
disposable mouthpiece for every breath alcohol test to ensure good
hygiene and the accuracy of the breath sample. Make sure to use a
new pressure-tube mouthpiece from a sealed plastic package every
time.

Controlling Residual Mouth Alcohol
Using the ALERT J5 is simple - power on with either left or right but-
ton, and wait for the “READY” screen. Before administering a breath
test, ensure the following:
Cautions (2) : No Drinking or Smoking Prior to Breath Test.
To ensure accuracy, please make sure test subject
has not had anything to drink within the last 15 minutes.
Also, make sure the test subject has not been
smoking for at least 3 minutes.

Quality Workmanship & Warranty
The ALERT J5 is warranted to be free from defects in workmanship and
materials for a period of one year from the date of shipment.
Alcohol Countermeasure Systems agrees to replace or repair any unit or part
that in its judgement is found to be defective, providing that the defect has
not been caused by misuse or mishandling. Units in warranty must be prop-
erly packaged and shipped prepaid to the factory authorized service center.

ALERT J5: Obtaining a Breath Sample
Obtaining a breath sample for analysis is very easy with ALERT J5.
Here’s how to capture a breath sample for testing:
1. Turn o n t h e A LE RT J5 by pressing the left or right button.
2. Check to make sure that the Mouthpiece is properly attached and
wait for the READY Screen to appear.
3. Have the subject provide a breath sample by blowing into the mouthpiece
for at period of 5 seconds. Continuous pressure is recommended - the
ALERT J5 has an intuitive LCD display and built-in intelligence to sense
proper breath pressure and will prompt the user to deliver a proper
breath sample for testing.

About Permissible Blood Alcohol Levels in Canada
Because sanctions can be imposed upon detection of a .05% BAC, it is
more accurate to state that for most provinces it is impermissible to
operate motorized vehicles at BAC levels higher than .05%. When an
impairment level of .08% BAC is exceeded, it becomes a criminal matter
and is subject to much stricter penalty.

Obtaining a Breath Sample (Cont’d)
While sampling breath alcohol , the ALERT J5 has an ability to accurately
assess proper breath flow for sampling and will prompt the subject if
breath flow is too low, or too high. A properly delivered breath sample is
followed by a BAC result within 10 seconds. When blowing into the ALERT
J5, make sure to blow for 5seconds. Listen for the tone to sound and
complete the breath test.
If breath flow is too low, the
following message is displayed.
