1Introduction
The COM Express approach of custom carrier combined with off the shelf system cores is an
excellent solution when you need to customize but lack the time or quantity for a complete
redesign. It fits most system integration projects with production volumes from 500 to 10,000 pcs
per year. The COM Express concept has a great many advantages over full custom designs. It
reduces engineering complexity, lowers the threshold for total project quantity and last but not
least brings your product to the market in no time. The average time to design a carrier board is
less than half the time of a full custom OEM board.
The nanoX-BASE is a standardATX size carrier board. Together with the COM Express module
of your choice and off the shelf add-on cards you can quickly emulate the functionality of your
desired end product for software development and hardware verification.
To build a functional prototype of your target system you will need:

The nanoX-BASE is compatible with COM Express Type 1 and Type 10 pinout Mini form factor
modules and accommodates up to four PCI Express x1 slots, one PCI Express Graphics x16 slot
(x1 link), one ExpressCard slot and two PCI slots.
The nanoX-BASE is based on the PICMG COM Express® (COM.0 Rev. 2.0) specification and
closely follows the PICMG COM Express® Carrier Design Guide (see 6.3 Carrier Board Design).

Before unpacking, check the shipping carton for any damage. If the shipping carton and/or
contents are damaged, inform your dealer immediately. Retain the shipping carton and packing
materials for inspection. Obtain authorization from the dealer before returning any product to
ADLINK.

2Special Features
2.1 Primary LPC based Super I/O
COM Express modules do not have a Super I/O chip onboard as this is considered legacy.
Therefore, a Super I/O is placed on the carrier board as an optional item. The nanoX-BASE
equipped with a Winbond W83627DHG-P that supports LPT, COM and PS/2 keyboard/mouse.
2.2 Secondary BIOS
The Express-BASE using firmware hub (FWH) for COM.0 Rev. 1.0 modules and Serial Peripheral
Interface (SPI) for COM.0 Rev. 2.0 modules. Selection of active BIOS can be made by jumper
setting. See Chapter 7: Secondary BIOS.
2.3 Onboard Audio
The nanoX-BASE is equipped with a RealtekALC888 audio codec onboard.
2.4 GPIO on Carrier
The nanoX-BASE is equipped with an NXP PCA9535 I/O Port to provide 8-bit GPIO over the
SMBus.
2.5 Information LEDs
General information is obtained through signaling LEDs for HDD, Power and Watchdog status.
See 8.3 Information LEDs.
2.6 Power, Reset, Lid and Sleep Switches
The nanoX-BASE is equipped four mini switches (SW1~4) forATX Power, Reset, and COM.0
Rev.2.0 specified "Lid" and "Sleep" functions. See 8.1 Mini Switches (SW1~4).

6.1 Carrier Board Signals
6.2 Connector and Pinout Compatibility
Connectors positions and pinouts comply with pinout and signal descriptions in the “COM.0 -
COM Express Module Base Specification”. This document includes descriptions of pinouts, signal
descriptions and mechanical characteristics of the COM Express specification. The nanoX-BASE
is compliant with COM Express Mini form factor, Type 1 and Type 10 modules.
6.3 Carrier Board Design
The nanoX-BASE closely follows the PICMG COM Express®
Carrier Design Guide (CDG). Please note that the CDG gives
design advice, and contains unverified reference schematics. The
nanoX-BASE design and schematics are fully verified, and we
recommend that you follow them as a reference for your carrier
board design.

SDVO from Module to Flat Cable connector CN30
Since COM Express Type 1 and Type 10 only define theAB connector, the CD connector which
brings out SDVO signals from COM Express Type 2~6 modules to the carrier is not available.
The method described below for connecting SDVO signals from the module to the carrier allows
the nanoX-BASE to be compatible with both Type 1 and Type 10 modules.
Type 1
The SDVO signals on a Type 1 module (e.g. nanoX-ML) are brought out through a Hirose FH12-
30S-0.5SH(55), 30-pin FFC/FPC connector on the module. Connect the SDVO signal from the
output connector on the Type 1 module to CN30 on the nanoX-BASE carrier board using the flat
ribbon cable provided.
Maximum routing length from connector to SDVO device is approximately 6”, so a cable
length of up to 4” can be used.
Type 10
The SDVO signals on a Type 10 module (e.g. nanoX-TC) are brought out through theAB
connector to a Hirose FH12-30S-0.5SH(55), 30-pin FFC/FPC connector on the carrier (CNX5).
Connect the SDVO signal from the CNX5 output connector to CN30 on the nanoX-BASE carrier
board using the flat ribbon cable provided.
