1. Important information for the installation of the hands-free kit for the
Siemens (with voice input)
Only for use within the BMW dealer organisation.
The Siemens hands-free facility may only be installed by a specialist workshop that has the
required special tools and manuals (servicing, repair, diagnostics, etc.).
Ensure that the cables/lines are not kinked or damaged as you install them in the car.
Additional cables/lines that you install must be secured with cable ties.
Item numbers refer only to the overview drawings and to the texts next to the
appropriate figure.
The interior equipment parts supplied in black can also be ordered in other equipment
colours using the electronic parts catalogue (EPC).
The operating manual for the speech control system is to be given to the customer.

Telephone adapter cable E is only required for cars with SA 640 telephone preparation
before PU 9/98.
The adapter wiring harness A, the aerial adapter cable C, the mobile phone holder connection
cable Dand the adapter cable Eare to be installed, where necessary, as shown in the figure,
and secured with cable ties.
When installing the adapter wiring harness A and the aerial adapter cable C, start with
branches A1 and A2 or C1.
Branches A1 and A2 under the centre console near the handbrake lever
Branch A3 to the installation location of the hands-free facility control module behind the
glove box
Branch C1 under the centre console near the handbrake lever
Branch C2 in the footwell on the passenger side
Branch D1 to the installation location of the hands-free facility control module behind the

The adapter wiring harness Aand the mobile phone holder connection cable Dare to be
installed as shown in the figure and secured with cable ties.
When installing the adapter wiring harness A, start with branches A1 and A2.
Branches A1 and A2 to the installation location of the ashtray
Branch A3 to the installation location of the hands-free facility control module behind the
glove box
Branch D1 to the installation location of the hands-free facility control module behind the
glove box
Branch D2 in the footwell on the passenger side
Tie back any excess lengths.

Pull the black 3-pin socket casing (40) out
through the opening (41) in the headlining (42)
and connect it to the black 3-pin plug casing of
the microphone (7). Clip the microphone (7) into
the microphone trim (43).
Refer to the direction of the arrows on the
microphone trim (43) and microphone (7) (the
arrows must point to the front of the car).
Then secure the microphone trim (43) in the
hands-free facility frame (44) in the headlining
(42).
7. To install the microphone in cars without a sunroof

Pull the black 3-pin socket casing (40) out
through the opening (41) in the headlining (42)
and push it through the opening (43) in the front
headlining trim (44).
Connect black 3-pin socket casing (40) to the
black 3-pin plug casing of the microphone (7).
Clip the microphone (7) into the microphone trim
(45).
Refer to the direction of the arrows on the
microphone trim (43) and microphone (7) (the
arrows must point to the front of the car).
Then secure the microphone trim (43) into the
front headlining trim (44).
Install the front headlining trim (44) in the
headlining (42).

Pull the black 3-pin socket casing (40) out
through the opening (41) in the top windscreen
panel trim (42) and connect it to the black 3-pin
plug casing of the microphone (7).
Clip the microphone (7) into the intended
installation location in the windscreen panel
insert (43).
Refer to the direction of the arrows on the
windscreen panel (43) and microphone (the
arrows point towards the front of the car).
Then secure the windscreen panel insert (43)
into the top windscreen panel trim (42).

Only for cars that have been upgraded with an
additional relay holder.
The figure shows the passenger footwell behind
the glove box.
Undo the cap nut (40) and pull out the additional
relay holder (41).
10. To prepare the mounting points for the retaining plate

Unclip the existing relay (42) and clip it sideways
into the relay holder (43).
If there are other relays in the additional relay
holder (41), proceed in exactly the same way for
them.

Affix two damping strips (4) on the area (40)
marked in grey on the wiring harness (41).

Cut the edge protector (14) to a length of 80 mm
(the remainder is not required).
Fit the cut edge protector to the retaining plate
(5), as shown in the figure.
Insert the retaining plate (5) into the glove box
holder (40) in the direction indicated by the arrow
and connect it to the stud bolt (41).
As you insert the retaining plate (5) ensure
that you do not damage any cables or lines. If
necessary tie the cables/lines out of the way.
Secure the retaining plate (5) to the stud bolt (41)
using the 10 mm cap nut (19)

Then screw two fillister head self-tapping screws
3.5 x 9.5 mm (18) into the 3 mm holes (41) you
have drilled.
To allow you to install the hands-free facility
control module on the retaining plate (5), remove
the retaining plate (5) again.
Align the retaining plate (5) in the glove box
holder (40) and drill 3 mm holes in the glove box
holder (40). Use the existing holes in the
retaining plate (5) as a template.
Extract the drill chippings to prevent
damaging the cables or lines.

Secure the hands-free kit control module (2) to
the retaining plate (5) using a hexagonal screw
with washer M5x14 (20) from above, two
hexagonal nuts with washers M5 (21) from below
and three hexagonal nuts with washers M5 (21).

Remove the detent (40) from the hands-free kit
control module (2), as shown in the figure, using
an oscillating saw.
Check the position of the hands-free kit
control module (2).
12. To install the hands-free kit control module
(for cars without SA534 automatic air conditioning)

Clean (degrease) the retaining plate (5)
before affixing the Dual securing strip,
fine (29).
Cut the 300 mm length of Dual securing strip,
fine (29) to a length of 120 mm.
Affix the Dual securing strip, fine (29) to the
retaining plate (5) as shown in the figure.
The 180 mm length of Dual securing strip,
fine (40) is not required.
Cut the 300 mm length of Dual securing strip,
coarse (30) to a length of 120 mm.
Press the Dual securing strip, coarse (30) on to
the Dual securing strip, fine (29) that you
previously affixed to the retaining plate.
The 180 mm length of Dual securing strip,
coarse (40) is not required.
Remove the backing foil from the Dual securing
strip, coarse (30).
Secure the hands-free kit control module (2) to
the retaining plate (5) using two hexagonal
screws with washers M5x14 (20) from below and
two hexagonal nuts with washers M5 (21).
Check the bond between the hands-free kit
control module (2) and the Dual securing strip,
coarse (30).

Cars with SA 640 telephone preparation
before PU 9/98 only
Dismantle black 18-pin socket casing X4545B
on the tied back telephone wiring harness (40).
Disconnect the existing blade terminal contact
(41) from PIN 10, black/white cable, in the black
18-pin socket casing X4545B, cut off the contact
and insulate it with a shrink hose (this is no
longer required).
Connect branch E3, 1-pin blade terminal contact,
red/yellow cable, on adapter cable Eto the
cleared slot PIN 10 in the black 18-pin socket
casing X4545B.
Assemble the black 18-pin socket casing
X4545B again.
Lay adapter cable Eunder the instrument panel
(42) to the retrofit plug connector X322 behind
the heating/air conditioning control and secure it
with cable ties.
The different cable colours are due to the
system and have no influence on their
function.

Undo the retrofit plug connector X322 and
disconnect it.
Insert a 5 A fuse (12) into the fuse holder (40).
Disconnect the existing socket contact (41) from
PIN 4, red/green cable, in the black 8-pin socket
casing (42) on the retrofit plug connector X322.
Connect branch E2, 1-pin socket contact,
red/black/yellow cable, from the adapter cable
Einto the black 8-pin socket casing (42) on
the retrofit plug connector X322 in the cleared
PIN 4.
Connect the black 1-pin socket casing (13) to the
released disconnected socket contact (41) and
connect them to branch E1, black 1-pin plug
casing, red/black/yellow cable on the adapter
cable E.
Then reconnect the retrofit plug connector X322
and clip it back into position.
The different cable colours are due to the
system and have no influence on their
function.

Cars with SA 640 telephone preparation
before PU 9/98 only
Connect branch A1, black 18-pin plug casing on
the adapter wiring harness Ato the black 18-pin
socket casing X4545B on the tied back
telephone wiring harness (40).
Connect branch A2, white 6-pin plug casing on
adapter wiring harness Ato the black 6-pin
socket casing X4546B on the tied back
telephone wiring harness (40).
Screw branch C1, coaxial socket casing mini
UHF, on the aerial adapter cable Cto the coaxial
plug casing mini UHF (41) on the tied back
telephone wiring harness (40).Then lay the
adapter wiring harness Awith branch A3 and the
aerial adapter cable Cwith branch C2 to the
installation location of the hands-free facility
control module.
Affix the protective strip (15) to the cable so
that the plug connections (A1 + X4545B), (A2 +
X4545B) and (C1 + 41) are enclosed in it.
When refitting the centre console, ensure
that the plug connections and the cables are not
jammed or damaged.
In addition ensure that the handbrake lever
moves freely.

Remove the cover (40) to allow you to connect
the telephone adapter cable Bto the existing
telephone wiring harness.

Cars with SA 640 telephone preparation after
PU 9/98 only
The figure shows the luggage compartment
at the rear left.
On E46/C cars the area behind the left rear
seat backrest on the rest.
Connect branch B1, white 18-pin plug casing
on the telephone adapter cable Bto the white
18-pin socket casing X18618B on the tied back
telephone wiring harness (40).
Connect branch B2, blue 26-pin plug casing on
the telephone adapter cable Bto the blue 26-pin
socket casing X18626B on the tied back
telephone wiring harness (40).
Then check whether the coaxial plug casing mini
UHF (41) and the coaxial socket casing mini UHF
(42) are screwed together.
If this is not the case make this connection.The
black 3-pin socket casing (43) on the tied back
telephone wiring harness (40) is only required if
you are fitting a cable compensator.
Affix the protective strip (10) to the cable so
that the plug connections (B1 + X18618B), (B2 +
X18626B) and (41 + 42) are enclosed in it,
together with the black 3-pin socket casing
(43).
