Intended use
2. INTENDED USE
Use of the temperature Threshold detector / Transmitter that
does not comply with the instructions could present risks to
people, nearby installations and the environment.
▶The temperature Threshold detector / Transmitter is intended
solely to measure the temperature of liquids or gas.
▶Protect this device against electromagnetic interference,
ultraviolet rays and, when installed outdoors, the eects of
the climatic conditions.
▶Use this device in compliance with the characteristics and
commissioning and use conditions specied in the contrac-
tual documents and in the user manual.
▶Requirements for safe and proper operation are proper
transport, storage and installation as well as careful opera-
tion and maintenance.
▶Only use the device as intended.
2.1. Restraints
Observe any existing restraints when the device is exported.
2.2. Foreseeable misuse
• Do not use this device in a potentially explosive atmosphere.
• Do not use the device in an environment that is incompatible
with the materials of which the transmitter is made.
• Do not use uid that is incompatible with the materials of
which the transmitter is made.
• Do not subject the device to mechanical loads (e.g. by placing
objects on top of it or by using it as a step).
• Do not make any external modications to the device. Do not
paint or varnish any part of the device.

3. BASIC SAFETY INFORMATION
This safety information does not take into account:
• any contingencies or occurences that may arise during assembly,
use and maintenance of the devices.
• the local safety regulations that the operator must ensure the sta
in charge of installation and maintenance observe.

agents).

General information
NOTE
Elements / Components sensitive to electrostatic discharges
▶This device contains electronic components sensitive to
electrostatic discharges. They may be damaged if they are
touched by an electrostatically charged person or object.
In the worst case scenario, these components are instantly
destroyed or go out of order as soon as they are activated.
▶To minimise or even avoid all damage due to an electro-
static discharge, take all the precautions described in the
EN61340-5-1 and 5-2 norms.
▶Also ensure that you do not touch any of the live electrical
components.
The device type 8400 was developed with due consid-
eration given to accepted safety rules and is state-of-
the-art. However, risks may arise.
Failure to observe these instructions as well as any unauthorised
work on the device excludes us from any liability and also nullies
the warranty which covers the device and its accessories.

5. DESCRIPTION
5.1. Area of application
The 8400 threshold detector / transmitter is used to measure the
temperature of a liquid or a gas.
The threshold detector can be used to control a valve or activate
an alarm. A transmitter version can also be used to establish a
control loop.
5.2. General description
5.2.1. Construction
The threshold detector / temperature transmitter is made of
an electronic module and a measuring element. The electronic
module can be adjusted by 180°.
• The electrical connection of the 8400 threshold detector is
made via an M12, 5-pin xed male adjustable connector and,
depending on the version, an EN175301-803 xed connector.
• The electrical connection of the 8400 transmitter is made via
an EN175301-803 xed connector and an M12, 8-pin xed
male connector.
The 8400 requires a 12...30VDC power supply.
• Depending on the version, a threshold detector has 1NPN or
PNP transistor output or 1 relay output.
• A transmitter has 14...20mA current input, 14...20mA current
output and 1 relay output.
5.2.2. Measuring element
Threshold detectors / temperature transmitters are tted with a
Pt100 sensor 29.5mm long.
The Extended versions are tted with a Pt100 sensor 100 or
200mm long.

7. INSTALLATION AND WIRING
7.1. Safety instructions
DANGER
Risk of injury due to high pressure in the installation
▶Stop the circulation of uid and depressurize the pipes
before loosening the process connections.
Risk of injury due to high uid temperatures.
▶Use safety gloves to handle the device.
▶Stop the circulation of uid and depressurize the pipes
before loosening the process connections.
Risk of injury due to the nature of the uid.
▶Respect the regulations on accident prevention and safety
relating to the use of aggressive uids.
Risk of injury due to electrical voltage
▶Before starting work, make sure that you switch o the sup-
ply voltage and secure it to prevent restarting.
▶Do not unscrew the cover of a powered device.
▶Observe all applicable accident protection and safety guide-
lines for electrical equipment.
WARNING
Risk of injury due to non-conforming installation.
▶The electrical and uid installation can only be carried out by
qualied and skilled sta with the appropriate tools.
▶Install appropriate safety devices (correctly rated fuse and/or
circuit-breaker).
▶Respect the assembly instructions for the tting used.
Risk of injury due to unintentional switch on of power supply
or uncontrolled restarting of the installation.
▶Take appropriate measures to avoid unintentional activation
of the installation.
▶Guarantee a set or controlled restarting of the process sub-
sequent to any intervention on the device.
• To ensure that the device runs correctly, plug in and
tighten the connectors.
• Check the chemical compatibility between the uid to
be measured and the materials from which the device
is made exposed to it

7.2. Installation onto the pipe
DANGER

▶Stop the circulation of uid and depressurize the pipes
before loosening the process connections.

▶Respect the regulations on accident prevention and safety
relating to the use of aggressive uids.
→Choose a standard G1/2", NPT1/2" or Rc1/2" connection
(depending on the port connection of your device) to install
the device onto the pipe.
Always ensure a watertight seal between the device
and the pipe by following the instructions below.
→Install the connection on the pipe according to the installation
instructions provided with the connection.
→For versions with G1/2" port con-
nection, ensure that the O-ring is in
place on the device.
→Replace it if necessary.

Do not use its housing to screw the device onto the
pipe.
→Using an appropriate tool, screw the
device into the connection.

When repositioning the housing, do not unscrew the
metal part of the device from the pipe.

→After positioning the housing, put the cover
back in its initial position.

7.3.1. Assembling the connectors

→Unscrew the pressure screw[1] and remove
the pressure ring[2] and the seal[3].
→Remove contact holder[5] from the cover[4].
→Insert the cable into pressure screw[1],
through the pressure ring[2], through the
seal[3] and nally through the cover[4].
→Connect the wires on the contact holder[5].
→Position the contact holder[5] in steps of 90°
then put it back into cover[4], pulling gently
on the cable so that the wires do not clutter
the housing.
→Tighten the pressure screw[1] (1.5...2Nm).

→Place the seal[6] between the connector and
the xed connector on the device and then
plug the type 2518 connector into the xed
connector.
→Insert and tighten the central screw[7]
(0.5...0.6Nm) to ensure tightness and correct
electrical contact.

7.3. Electrical wiring
DANGER
Risk of injury due to electrical voltage
▶Before starting work, make sure that you switch o the sup-
ply voltage and secure it to prevent restarting.
▶Do not unscrew the cover of a powered device.
▶Observe all applicable accident protection and safety guide-
lines for electrical equipment.
To ensure that the device runs correctly, plug in and
tighten the connectors.
Protect the electrical power supply and the relay
• Fit the power supply with a 1A fuse if it is not protected
by default.
• Protect the relay with fuse of 3 A max. and a circuit
breaker.
NOTE
• Use a shielded cable with an operating temperature limit
>+80°C (+176°F).
• Use a high quality electrical power supply, ltered and
regulated.

4 3 2 1 →Unscrew the nut[1] on the body[4].
→Insert the cable into the nut[1], the
cable clamp[2] and the seal[3], and
then into the body[4].
→Strip 20mm of the cable.
→Cut the central wire (earth) so that its
length is equal to 11.5mm.
→Expose 5.5mm of the wires on the
stripped cable.
→Insert each wire into the appropriate
pin on the terminal block[5] (see
chapter7.3.2 and 7.3.3).
→Tighten the terminal block[5] wired to
the body[4]
→Tighten the connector nut[1].

The M12, 5-pin xed connector is adjustable:
→Unscrew the locknut.
Do not turn the xed connector by more than 360° so as
not to twist the cables inside the housing
→Turn the xed connector until it is in the desired position.
→Tighten the locknut using a spanner, while keeping the xed
connector in the desired position.

7.3.3. Wiring on an 8400 with M12, 5-pin and
EN175301-803 xed connectors
DANGER
Risk of injury due to electrical voltage
• Always plug in and tighten the connectors correctly.
The tightness of the device is not guaranteed when the
EN175301-803 xed connector is not wired:
→unscrew the nut[1] (see Fig.5) on the 2518 female
connector provided with the device;
→insert the plug provided with the 2518 connector into
the cable gland;
→tighten the nut;
→insert the plugged 2518 connector into the
EN175301-803 xed connector.
