INSTALLATION
Connecting the HoTelephone (Models 3910s and 3810X)
ConnectingthisHoTelephoneto atelephonecompanyline mustbe
througha universal serviceordercode(USOC) outletjack. The
USOCjack codenumbersare:
l Single-linedesktelephone= RJl 1C
l Single-linewall telephone= RJl 1W
If the installation site doesn’thavethe properjack(s) andinside
wiring, it is theuseror installer’sresponsibilityto arrangefor their
installation. The correctoutletjack for this equipmentis an in-
dustry-standardtype625A2-6jack wired pertheUSOCjack code
number.
Local telephonecompanyregulationsmay notpermit connections
topartylinesandcoinlinesby anyoneexceptthetelephoneoperat-
ing company.
Preparing the HoTelephone for Wall Mounting
This telephoneis shippedfrom thefactoryconfiguredfor deskuse.
To convertfrom astandarddeskmodelto onethatcanbehungon
the wall, follow theprocedureoutlinedbelow.
1. Disconnectline cord from telephone.
2. Turn telephoneoverto exposelower housing.

The telephone circuitry is sensitive to static
electricity discharge. Be sure that your body
and the work place are properly grounded to
avoid any static electricity discharge while
step 3 is being performed.
3. Removescrewsthatattachlowerhousingtoupperhousing.
Carefully separatelower andupperhousingsmaking sure
not to disconnectwiring betweenthetwo housings.
4. This telephoneis equippedwith adata/auxiliaryport.
l Removeholecoverfrom newopeningthatauxiliaryjack
is to occupy.

l Slide hole cover into old openingthat auxiliary jack
vacated.

5. Snaptaboutof openingin bottomof lower housing.Insert
into handsetcradleto createawall-mounting hookfor the
handset(Figure 1).
6. Carefully reverselower housingend-for-end(rotateit 180
degrees).Do not disturbany internal wiring during this
process.
7. Refastenlower housingto upperhousing.
l Make surethat all wires areclear.
l Do not over-tighten screws when reinstalling lower
housing.
8. Route line cord through appropriatechannel on lower
housing,andreconnectit to telephone. A shortline cord
canbesubstitutedfor thestandardsuppliedoneif desired.
Wall Mounting the HoTelephone
Mount thetelephonedirectly on the wall using two #lO panhead
screws(obtainedlocally), ormountit on awall jack coverplate. If
you are using a wall jack cover plate, an AT&T type 630B wall
plate is recommended for best results.
1. If #lO screwsareused,threadthem into the wall within
Winch of thesurface. Referto Figure 1for thespacing
dimensions.
2. Position the keyhole-shapedholes in the bottom of the
telephoneover the #lO screwsor the cover plate studs.
Slide thetelephonedownuntil aslight click is felt.
3. To removethetelephone,lift tounsnapbothscrewsorstuds
from the bottom housing,andthenlift it away from the
wall.

TELEPHONE OPERATION
Operating these single-line telephones (Figures 2 and 3) is
straightforwardandeasy.
Answering a Call
. Whentelephonerings,lift handsetandtalk.
Making a Call
Dialing anumber,
l Lift handsetanddial number.
Dialing aprogrammablebuttonfunction,
l Lift handset.
l Pressdesiredprogrammablebutton.
Dialing aspeeddial number,
l Lift handset.
l PresspreprogrammedSPEED button.
l Dial speeddial locationnumber(0- 9).
NOTE: The SPEED button and speed dial numbers are not available un-
less previously enabled by programming action.
Using Call Waiting
The3910sand3810XmodelHoTelephonesletyouswitchbetween
two simultaneoustelephonecalls. While you areon acall, atone
will soundinthehandsetreceiverlettingyouknow thatanothercall
is comingin.
To placethefirst call onhold andanswerthe secondcall,
l PressHOLD button.Youwill beconnectedtotheLine2call.
The Line 1light will flash andtheLine 2 light will turn on
steady.
To returnto first call andleavesecondcall onhold,
l PressHOLD button.Youwill now beconnectedto theLine
1 call. The Line 2 light will flash andtheLine 1light will
turn onsteady.
To returnto first call anddropsecondcall,
l PressLine 1 button. Line 2 light will turn off andLine 1
light will mm onsteady.

SPEAKERPHONE OPERATION
(Model 3910s Only)
When you make or answera call, you canhave a conversation
without using the telephonehandset,or handsfree,becausea
microphone and speakerare built into the telephoneset. The
microphone port is located in the front right-handedgeof the
telephone housing. To make sure the speakerphoneoperates
properly,checkto seethatthis port is notblockedby anyobstruc-
tions.
Answering a Call Using the Speakerphone
1. When the telephonerings, pressthe SPKR button.The
light abovethespeakerphoneon/off buttonwill turn onto
indicatethat speakerphoneis active.
2. Speakin normaltoneof voice towardtelephone.
3. If needed,adjustloudnessof caller’s voice With volume
controllocatedin frontedgeof telephone(Figure2).
4. End speakerphonecall by pressingSPKR button again.
Light will turnoff andtelephonewill hangup.
Making a Call Using the Speakerphone
1. PressSPKR button. Note that light turns on to indicate
speakerphoneis active.
2. Whendial toneis heardoverspeaker,dial desirednumber.
3. End speakerphonecall by pressingSPKR button again.
Light will turnoff andtelephonewill returnto idle state.
Switching Between Speakerphone and Handset During
a Call
Speakerphoneto handset,
1. Lift handsetfrom cradle.
2. Continuein-progresscall with handset.
3. Hanguphandsetto endcall.

PROGRAMMING
Youmay storeupto 16keypaddigitsincludingthePAUSE orTAP
fixed feature, if needed,at programmablebutton locations for
autodialing.
All 12programmablebuttonsmay beusedfor numberstorage,or
youmayuse11programmablebuttonsfor numberstorageandstore
a SPEED button function in thelower right-handprogrammable
buttonlocation(Figures2and3).TheSPEEDbuttonletsyou store
additionalnumbersusingkeypadlocations. Memory contentsare
protectedby along-life lithium battery,which providesmemory-
retainingpowerfor approximatelysevenyears.
Programmingcontrolsarelocatedbeneaththetelephonefaceplate.
Before you remove the faceplate, remove the clear plastic cover
of the message waiting indicator by pulling it straightup.Then:
1. Remove the two-piece faceplateto gain accessto the
programmingcontrols.
2. Refer to Figures 2 and 3 for the actual location‘of the
controlsfor PAUSE, STORE, and TAP.
3. Look in theopenings- you will seeasmall, silver,circular
actuatorin eachopening.This is theprogrammingcontrol.
4. To actuateeachcontrol,carefully pressdown onit with a
blunt wooden or plastic probe approximately l/g-in,
diameter.
Storing Numbers at Programmable Button Locations
NOTE: The telephone must be connected to the line before you canpro-
gram it.
1. Lift handset.
2. Press STORE.
3. Pressdesiredprogrammablebutton.
4. Dial numbertobestored(16digitsmaximum). If needed,
press TAP for ahookswitchflashsignaland PAUSE for a
pausebetweennumbers.A valid entrycausesanacknow-
ledgetoneor aclick to soundfrom thespeakerif youhave
aspeakerphoneandfrom thehandsetreceiverif youdon’t.
An invalid entrycausesanerrortoneor abuzzto sound.

NOTE: A two-secondpause is stored each time the PAUSE control is
pressed. A fued 6.50 msec hookwitch flash signal is stored each
time the TAP control is pressed. PAUSE and TAP each equal
one digit in the 16-digit total.
5. Press STORE to endprogramming sequence.After the
16thdigit is stored,the programming sequencewill end
automatically.Successtonewill soundto indicatesuccess-
ful programmingsequence.
6. Repeatsteps2-5for eachprogrammablebutton.
Enabling the SPEED Button
1. Press STORE, *,
andlower right-hand programmable
button (Figures2 and3).
2. Press STORE again.
3. Labeltheprogrammablebutton“Speed.”
Disabling the SPEED Button
l Press STORE, #,SPEED,STORE.
Storing Numbers At Keypad Locations (to be accessed
by SPEED button)
1. Lift handset.
2. PressSTORE.
3. Dial speedlocationfrom keypad(O-9).
4. Dial numbertobestored(16digits maximum). If needed,
press TAP for ahookswitchflashsignaland PAUSE for a
pausebetweennumbers.A valid entrycausesanacknow-
ledgetoneoraclick to soundfrom thespeakerif youhave
aspeakerphoneandfrom thehandsetreceiverif youdon’t.
An invalid entrycausesanerrortoneorabuzzto sound.
5. Press STORE to endprogrammingsequence.After the
16thdigit is stored,the programmingsequencewill end
automatically.Successtonewill soundto indicatesuccess-
ful programmingsequence.

buttonandthenthesecond.Youcanstorethenumberunder
upto four buttons.

Ringer Volume
Changingtheringervolume ontheModel 3910sHoTelephone,
l Locate ringer switch on the bottom of telephonehousing
(Figure4).
l Usingtheendof apencil,slidetheswitchupfor HI anddown
for LO.
Changingtheringervolume ontheModel 3810XHoTelephone,
l Locate ringer switch on the bottom of telephonehousing
(Figure4); adjustthevolume of theringerby sliding lever
from onesideto theother.

MessageWaiting Light
The telephonemessagewaiting light may beturnedonby acentral
answeringserviceto alerttheuserthat amessageawaitspickup.
,:- To receivemessages,
l Seelit messagewaiting light.
l Lift handset.
l Dial message service number. When the message is
delivered, the light will be turned off by the answering
service.
NOTE: When the message waiting pair is connected to the tip and ring
pair of the line jack, the FCC registration code of the telephone
will be My and the REN will be Z. The telephone will be so
marked on the registration label attached to the bottom housing.
This KX registered device is intended to be connected behind a
host PBX only. Direct connection to the CO line may not be
compatible and is not permitted without the prior approval of
the telephone company ofice supplying the CO line.
Data/Auxiliary Port
This telephoneis equippedwith a data/auxiliary port that is a
standardRJl 1configuredmodularjack andis connecteddirectly
acrossthetip andring leadsof thetelephoneline. This port is not
controlledby thetelephonehookswitch. It canbeusedto connect
adjunctdevicessuchasautodialers,modems,anddataterminalsto
thetelephoneline.
Some adjunctdevicescanbe operatedat the sametime that the
telephoneis off-hook while otherscannot. Refer to the manual
associatedwith thedevicefor completedetails.

FCC RULES AND REGULATIONS
This telephonecomplieswith FederalCommunicationsCommis-
sion (FCC)Rules,Part68. TheFCC registrationlabel attachedto
the bottom housing contains the FCC registrationnumber, the
ringerequivalencenumber,themodelnumber,andtheserialnum-
ber or production date. The telephoneoperatingcompany can
requestthat they be provided with the telephonenumber of the
TELCO line involved,theFCC registrationnumber,andtheringer
equivalencenumberof this telephone.
The ringerequivalencenumber(REN) is ameasureof theload a
telephonedevice will placeon the ringing generatorof a central
office telephonecompanyline. Ingeneral,aREN of 1isequivalent
to theload providedby onestandardtelephoneringer. FCC rules
statethat thetotal REN loadon a line shallnot exceed5. When
contacted,thetelephonecompanywill provideinformation onthe
maximum numberof telephonesor ringersthatcanbeconnected
to oneline, aswell asanyotherapplicabletechnicalinformation.
Any problem with this equipmentthatcausesimproper operation
of the telephonenetwork may requirethe telephonecompanyto
disconnectserviceto thetrouble site. If possible,advancenotice
of thedisconnectwill begiven. If advancenoticeis notpractical,
notice will begiven assoonaspossible. The telephonecompany
will inform theuserof theright to file acomplaintwith theFCC.
The telephonecompanycantemporarily discontinueserviceand
make changesthat could affect the operationof this equipment;
however,it mustprovideadvancenoticeof anychangeto givethe
usertheopportunityto maintainuninterruptedtelephoneservice.
Connectionof this telephoneto atelephonecompanyline mustbe
througha universalserviceordercode(USOC) outletjack. The

the installation site doesnot have the properjack(s) and inside

RADIO FREQUENCY INTERFERENCE (RFI)
It ispossiblefor anelectronictelephonetogenerateradiofrequency
(RF’)energywhile it is in use and interferewith radio and TV
reception.This telephonehasbeentestedandfoundtocomply with
radiationlimits for a ClassB computingdevice,pursuantto FCC
RulesandRegulations,Part 15,SubpartJ. Theseregulationsare
designedto providereasonableprotectionagainstRFI.
Thereisnoguaranteethatinterferencewill notoccurin aparticular
installation. If atelephonedoescauseinterferenceto radioor TV
reception(which canbedeterminedby unpluggingthetelephone),
try to correcttheinterferenceasfollows:
l Reorientthereceivingantennaof theaffectedelectronic
device.
l Relocatetheaffecteddeviceor thetelephone.
l Plugthe affecteddeviceinto adifferentAC outlet.
