For proper and safe use, before installing and using the instrument, please read carefully all warnings
and instructions in this manual. It is important to keep this instruction handbook with the instrument
for further reference.
When selling or transferring, make sure that this manual accompanies the instrument.
The installation must be carried out by an authorized technician of Diesse Diagnostica Senese S.p.A.
CHORUS AUTOSAMPLER is specifically designed to be used with the procedures provided by Diesse
Diagnostica Senese S.p.A.
Any use other than manufacturer's instructions may lead to an increased risk of error that the user
becomes fully liable for.
Any breach of software protections and any planned procedure tampering with the instrument's
internal memory will invalidate the warranty.
The safety and performance requirements of the instrument can no longer be guaranteed when
the instrument is powered using a different cable from the one supplied, compatible with the
power supply of the country of installation.
DIESSE Diagnostica Senese S.p.A. shall not be responsible for any damage caused, directly or
indirectly, by errors, faults, or injuries due to the use of manuals not corresponding to the version of
the supplied instrument.

CHAPTER 1
1.1 INTENDED USE
The Chorus Autosampler instrument, including software installed, is an automated pipetting system
for byological samples. Specifically, this is designed to be used in conjunction with Chorus Trio.
Chorus Autosampler is projected for sample tracking via barcode scanning and transferring to strips
contained in the Chorus Trio sample plate. The transferring is carried out with automated disposable
tips and the sample tubes must have specific dimensions.
As an accessory for another instrument, Chorus Auto Sampler is designed to meet its demands, and
shall not be used separately. It is installed on Chorus Trio and securely locked thanks to a plate screwed
to the Chorus Trio casing.
Before using the instrument, read and follow carefully all the safety features outlined in Section 2
(Safety), adopting all the measures necessary to prevent any potential risks associated with the use of
Chorus Autosampler.
This instrument, including the installed software, is intended to be used only by trained personnel
within hospital clinical laboratories and similar environments.
1.2 INTRODUCING THE INSTRUMENT

N.B. For the Chorus Autosampler new livery instrument, only some example images are shown, where
it is considered necessary to have more information.
Chorus Autosampler instrument (Fig. 1 and Fig. 1) adds automation to the Chorus Trio line by perfecting
the dispensation of biological samples in the strips inserted into. More specifically, it performs the
following operations:
1. Barcode reading of samples;
2. Sample suctioning through tubes, after checking existing levels;
3. Supply of aspirated liquid inside the relevant well of Chorus Trio.
Suction and dispensing are carried out using disposable tips.
Machine operation requires the loading on board of 32 disposable tips and samples needed for the
desired work plan.
Chorus Autosampler is connected to Chorus Trio via USB cable and requires a power cord.

Lift the front door to reach the inside of the machine in order to load the required materials for the
work cycle (
Fig. 3). The following components are visible and marked by numbers:
1. Sample and tips holder rotor;
2. Used tip collection box;
3. Access hole in Chorus Trio;
4. Tip loading arm;
5. Barcode reader.
The rotor has 30 free positions for samples and 32 free positions for disposable tips, the first one is
recognizable by a little hole. Positions in the rotor are numbered to facilitate sample traceability.
Sample positions are also useful for inserting calibrators and controls after insertion into a suitable
adapter.
The used tip collection box is removable and must be installed with the biohazard symbol facing the
operator.
On the right side, next to the rotor, there is the opening through which the mechanical arm transfers
samples into the strips inside Chorus Trio.
The mechanical arm moves back and forth, from the rotor to collect tips, to the sample tubes picking
up the contents, to the hole for dispensing into the strip inside Chorus, and finally over the tips rack to
remove the used one.
The barcode reader is located behind the rotor, and the beam invests the test tubes in the slot that has
been specifically made in each plastic placeholder, and from which the barcode must be visible (see
section 3.2.2).
1.3.1.1 DISPLAY
The colour touch screen is on the front door. Only DIESSE Diagnostica Senese technical assistance may
use this screen, for troubleshooting and software parameter settings.

1.4 TYPES OF COMPATIBLE TUBES
The types of tubes compatible with the instrument use must have the following features:
1. Diameter: 13 mm
2. Length: 75 ÷ 100 mm
NOTE: The tubes are inserted in the rotor without caps, therefore dimensional requirements only apply
to the body of the tube.
1.5 MATERIALS SUPPLIED WITH THE INSTRUMENT
The instrument is supplied in a box containing:
1. Chorus Autosampler with installed software (1pc);

If Chorus Trio is already installed in the lab, Chorus Autosampler will be supplied with another box,
containing the modified top cover necessary for the installation.
1.6 MATERIALS REQUIRED, BUT NOT SUPPLIED
Other materials, not supplied by Diesse Diagnostica Senese with the instrument, are required for the
use of Chorus Autosampler, namely:
1. Disposable gloves, protective glasses, and lab garments;
2. Cleaning paper;
3. Sanitizing solution.

2.1 WARNINGS & RESTRICTIONS
•Due to safety reasons, only use the machine if it is in perfect conditions or it could cause harm
to people.
•It is forbidden to use Chorus Autosampler for any activity other than its intended use.
•Do not insert into Chorus Autosampler any component or material that is not relevant to the
instrument’s specific use.
•The standard use of the machine foresees operations during which the operator may come into
contact with biological samples, such as:
- Inserting and removing tubes without caps with potentially infected contents in tube
rack rotor,
- Inserting and removing calibrators and controls without caps in the tube rack rotor,
- Removing the tray with used tips which came into contact with a potentially infected
biological sample,
- All actions and procedures are explained in the Chorus Trio operation manual.
For this reason, the operator must wear personal protective equipment, consisting of at least:
disposable gloves, protective glasses, and lab garments, in accordance with the national
legislation.
•In case of emergency, switch off the instrument using the main switch or disconnecting the
power cord from the machine. This will result in immediate disruption of the power supply and
all machine operations.
2.2 HAZARDS
2.2.1 MECHANICAL HAZARDS
The moving parts of Chorus Autosampler during a cycle are the following:
1. Sample holder rotor;
2. Mechanical collection/dispensing arm;
Moving these components may cause damage to the operator in case of contact during the cycle. For
this reason, the front door is equipped with electromechanical locks, in order to avoid accidental
openings.
CAUTION
It is strictly forbidden to tamper with the instrument’s door locking. In case of voluntary tampering
with this mechanism, DIESSE Diagnostica Senese will not respond to any damage caused to people
or objects.
The door is unlocked at the end of the sample dispensing cycle in Chorus Trio, so that the operator can
retrieve the inserted samples if needed.

2.2.2 ELECTRICAL HAZARDS
The instrument must be plugged into a standard power outlet using the power cord provided by
DIESSE Diagnostica Senese in the box.
CAUTION
Using a non-standard extender may violate all safety precautions. Even though extensions are
strongly recommended, where required, it is of paramount importance to use extensions that
comply with the country's regulations.
The instrument, being adequately protected, does not represent an electric shock hazard for the
operator.
There is no risk that, by touching the instrument, it may cause an electric shock and that this can
interrupt its operation, since it is properly protected.
The user must not work if the carter has been removed.
2.2.3 HAZARDS ASSOCIATED WITH LIQUIDS
The instrument is not protected against liquid spills and important phenomena of this kind could:
1. Seriously damage the operation of the two machines: in Chorus Autosampler there is a large
hole, used for mechanical arm input and sample dispensing in the Chorus Trio. Spilling liquids
in this hole could seriously damage Chorus Trio.
2. Constitute a serious risk for the operator.
For this reason:
1. Do not place containers on the instrument;
2. Do not spill any liquid in the instrument;
3. Be very careful when inserting and extracting sample tubes without caps.
4. Carefully extract the tips used collection box, since it may still contain liquid residues.
The material used during tests and placed into the capless tubes is a biological sample and, as such,
potentially infected. Therefore, all precautions provided by relevant national laws in analysis
laboratories should be observed.
Also, the instrument drainage material (disposable tips) should be treated as any other similar type of
organic hospital infected waste.
In areas of contact with the biological sample, a label with a hazard of biocontamination symbol is
applied.
The major dangers arising from accidental sample spill occur when:
1. Inserting and extracting capless tubes into the rack rotor;
2. Extracting the collection box containing used disposable tips that may contain very small
sample residues.
CAUTION
When handling potentially infected waste, it is necessary to wear all the individual protective
devices supplied to the operator, or at least disposable gloves, protective glasses, and lab garments.

2.3 SHIPPING AND INSTALLATION
2.3.1 WARNINGS
Instrument packaging and its internal parts locking ensures its integrity during transportation, if the
following precautions are adopted:
▪Do not overturn
▪Do not drop from heights above 20 cm
▪Do not immerse in liquids, even partially
▪Do not store in places where humidity is higher than 80%
▪Do not store in places where temperature is higher than 45°C and lower than 5°C.
▪The instrument should only be transported in the original packaging, by specialized personnel,
equipped with the necessary safety equipment to avoid falling, crushing, and breaking.
▪Any damage caused during transportation or the lack of parts or items must be immediately
notified to Diesse Diagnostica Senese
▪Store the packaging for any future technical assistance needs.
2.3.2 TRANSPORTATION AND STORAGE
The instrument is packed in a 495(l) x 745(h) x 385(d) mm cardboard box.
Storage and transportation must be performed according to the orientation markings on the box. Do
not rotate the box during transportation. The instrument can be transported at a temperature range
of 5 to 45 °C.
Do not expose to rain or to environment with humidity higher than 80%. If keeping the instrument at
a temperature below 10 °C for a time of 24 hours or longer, warn the installation personnel to check
that no condensation has occurred in the encoding systems, in the optical devices, and in the
instrument moving parts, and make sure that the instrument has been at room temperature for an
hour at least before turning it on.
2.3.3 HOW TO OPEN THE PACKAGE
Open the instrument package with a cutter or a pair of scissors (not supplied). After checking that the
packaging is intact and the TOP/BOTTOM orientation is correct, proceed as follows:
1. Cut the adhesive tape holding the box closed: the open box is shown in Fig. 6.

2. Remove the machine kit from the top of packaging and the carton and polyethylene packaging.
The inside of the box is shown in Fig. 7. The kit is shown in the table below Fig. 7.

3. Extract the instrument from the box by holding it with both hands, one on each side, taking
care that the top of the Chorus Trio carter has already been replaced with the modified one for
the assembling of Chorus Autosampler.
CAUTION
The before mentioned operation shall be performed by one person only, making sure to hold the
instrument with both hands.

4. Place Chorus Autosampler on the rectangular plate of the modified Chorus Trio carter and lock
it with the screws included in the kit
This user manual section, describing instructions for instrument unpacking, is placed in the original
box and it must be read very carefully. The operations described should be carried out by authorized

2.3.4 INSTRUMENT INSTALLATION
Chorus Autosampler is designed for assembly on Chorus Trio, thanks to a special perforated plate and
securely screwed on the top casing of the latter. Fig. 7 shows the plate with numbers indicating the
following:
▪1: plate
▪2: hole for inserting motor
▪3: mechanical arm input hole
For the ideal surface for installing Chorus Trio, refer to its operating manual.
In case Chorus Autosampler is installed with Chorus Trio, this one will already have the modified carter
with the plate placed for installation.
If Chorus Autosampler is purchased from the laboratory as a Chorus Trio accessory, then later, the
installation will require the replacement of the casing with a modified one that already includes the
Chorus Autosampler assembly plate.
Chorus trio with modified carter and plate is as shown in Fig. 8. The 4 holes for Chorus Autosampler
installation are circled in red.

The following tools are required for assembly:
1. 2,5 mm Allen wrench
2. 3 mm Allen wrench
Proceed as follows:
1. Place Chorus Autosampler on the rectangular plate, as shown in Fig. 8 properly inserting the
motor inside the hole. Remove the envelope containing screws and inserts with slot from the
machine kit (Fig. 9).

2. Remove machine rear panel by unscrewing 6 screws, six in the rear and one per side (top), holes
shown in Fig. 10. After extracting the panel, there are two assembly holes at the bottom of the
two ends of the instrument. Place a slotted insert, a washer and a screw for each hole and screw
it, as shown in Fig. 10.
