1. Declaration of Conformity
We declare that our medical devices as well as our accessories for medical devices are in conformity with the
requirements of the Medical Devices Directive 93/42/EEC. Therefore, the FIOR &GENTZ products bear the CE marking.

Since we are not able to check the compliance of handling and dealing with batteries, we cannot assume any
liability for any damages or costs caused by batteries. For further information, we refer to our General Terms

3. Safety Information
This manual is addressed to orthotists. That is why the content basically confines to features of the product. It
does not contain any notes about dangers which are obvious to orthotists.
To achieve maximum safety, please show the patient and/or the care team how to use the product correctly.
For information reasons and for the safety of your patient, please note all information provided in this manual
including notes, tables and illustrations. In particular, note the safety instructions indicated by DANGER, WARNING,
CAUTION and NOTICE that are listed and explained in the following paragraph. Ignoring this information may lead
to patient injuries and property damage. In addition, please read the manual of the NEURO TRONIC system knee
joint as well as the patient information and hand over the patient information to the patient and/or the care team.

4.2 All Instructions for a Safe Handling of the NEURO TRONIC Multi-Purpose Device
WARNING
Risk of Falling Due to Improper Handling of the Multi-Purpose Device
Gather information about the correct handling of the multi-purpose device (e.g. avoiding
contact with moisture and water). To do so, attend one of our production technique workshops,
refer to the online tutorials on our website or contact Technical Support.
NOTICE
Damage to the Multi-Purpose Device’s Batteries Due to Improper Handling
Use the multi-purpose device’s batteries as described in this manual. Pay particular attention
to:
- use the correct type of batteries;
- exchange them properly;
- carry out a battery quality test, if applicable.
In case of persistent failure, contact our Technical Support.

5. Application
The multi-purpose device is used to adjust the knee joint system NEURO TRONIC. This system knee joint is
also available with Bluetooth® technology. It must be handled by a professionally trained user. With the multi-
purpose device or the app NEURO TRONIC Expert, you can adjust orthoses in which a NEURO TRONIC system
knee joint is mounted.
6. Knee Joint System NEURO TRONIC
You have purchased one or more articles of the knee joint system NEURO TRONIC. It consists of the following
articles (fig. 1):
NEURO TRONIC system knee joint;
NEURO TRONIC component set including controller, optionally without Bluetooth including exchange-
able batteries or with Bluetooth including exchangeable batteries or an integrated lithium-ion battery;
NEURO TRONIC remote control for the patient, optionally without Bluetooth including
microprocessor-controlled quick charger or with Bluetooth including microprocessor-controlled
quick charger or USB charging cable and app NEURO TRONIC User;
NEURO TRONIC multi-purpose device for the orthotist, with Bluetooth and app NEURO TRONIC Expert.

The system knee joint and the controller are mounted to the patient's orthosis. In order to put the orthosis into
operation and adjust it, you need the multi-purpose device or the app NEURO TRONIC Expert (the app has to be
unlocked with a multi-purpose device with Bluetooth once). The patient needs the remote control for handling
the orthosis. Complementary, they can use the app NEURO TRONIC User.
The NEURO TRONIC multi-purpose device is delivered in a case. The case includes the following system com-
ponents (fig. 2):

7. Adjusting the Orthosis
Respect a proper alignment before putting the orthosis into operation. You can make further adjustments to the
orthosis using the multi-purpose device/the app.
Follow the instructions of the next paragraph and make patient-specific adjustments in order to ensure a
properly functioning orthosis.
7.1 Basic Orthosis Alignment Check
7.1.1 On the Workbench
Regardless of the plantar flexion, in automatic system knee joints, it is obligatory to adjust the dorsiflexion
stop systematically for an optimal function of the orthosis. The dorsiflexion stop determines the moment the
NEUROTRONIC system knee joint unlocks during mid stance. Furthermore, it affects the extension moment which
is applied to the orthosis and the system knee joint, respectively. This is necessary to unlock the system knee joint.
Press the foot piece of the orthosis firmly in the patient's shoe and put the orthosis on the workbench. The
dorsiflexion stop of the system ankle joint must be adjusted in such a way that the line of gravity passes through
the middle of the femoral shell and ventrally ahead of the system ankle joint.

7.1.2 Statically on the Patient
For checking the correct static alignment of the orthosis, the patient must wear the orthosis and stand upright
with parallel feet. When viewed from the side, the imagined line must run from the body's centre of gravity
through one half of the distance between the mechanical pivot point at ankle height and the metatarsal joints.
Usually, this is already given by the correct basic alignment, since the orthosis itself and soft tissue may be
deformed when wearing it and the line of gravity, therefore, moves automatically into the desired position. If
this is not the case, the dorsiflexion stop must be readjusted.
If the dorsiflexion stop is adjusted correctly, a lever arm between forefoot and lower leg is formed which brings
the patient into a stable balance and causes the necessary knee extension moment.
7.1.3 Dynamically on the Patient
For checking the correct dynamic alignment of the orthosis, the patient must wear the orthosis and walk a few
steps with it. The dorsiflexion stop must be adjusted in such a way that a heel lift can be clearly seen in terminal
stance. The consequence is a lever arm between forefoot and lower leg which brings the patient into a stable
balance and applies the necessary knee extension moment.
If the heel does not lift, you must limit the system ankle joint's range of motion in dorsiflexion.
8. Putting the Multi-Purpose Device into Operation
The multi-purpose device is delivered with batteries and can immediately
be put into operation.
Briefly press the Set button to put the device into operation. You can
now see the three modes Auto, Free and Lock on the display (fig.3). The
available modes can not be selected until the multi-purpose device is
connected to the controller (see paragraph 14.2).
9. The App NEURO TRONIC Expert
The app provides the same functions that you can use with the multi-
purpose device.
If a controller with Bluetooth is mounted to the patient’s orthosis, you can adjust the
orthosis either with the multi-purpose device with Bluetooth or with the app (fig. 5) via
your smartphone/tablet. However, your smartphone/tablet requires at least Bluetooh 4.0.
You can download the app for free via the Play Store for the Android operating system
(> version 5.0) or the App Store for the iOS operating system (> iOS 10).

When the batteries of the multi-purpose device are almost
empty, a message will be displayed (fig. 4). In order to save the
batteries, the multi-purpose device turns off when it is not used
for more than 10 minutes.

9.1 Putting into Operation the App NEURO TRONIC Expert
Download the app with your smartphone/tablet via the app store of your
operating system provider. Then, in order to unlock the app, connect it
with a multi-purpose device with Bluetooth once. This way, we ensure
that patients cannot access the app NEURO TRONIC Expert and change
the orthosis’ settings. In order to unlock the app with the multi-purpose
device, proceed as follows:
1. Select the menu item Activate App in the multi-purpose device (fig.6)
by browsing with the left and right arrow buttons.
2. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button.
3. Open the app with your smartphone/tablet and follow the app’s instructions.
10. Checking the Connection of Controller and Multi-Purpose Device
The controller gives signals in order to inform you about the connection status of the multi-purpose device/the
app and the controller. The second LED at the controller indicates that the multi-purpose device/the app and
the controller communicate.
When you select one of the three modes (AUTO, FREE or LOCK), the following signal appears:

11. Checking the Connection of Controller and App NEURO TRONIC Expert
In order to adjust an orthosis with the app, Bluetooth must be permanently activated and the app must be opened
in the foreground. The signals given by the controller are the same as for a connection with a multi-purpose device.
Use the app menu and select the menu item Pairing. Follow the instructions in the app.
The controller cannot communicate with several NEURO TRONIC Expert apps simultaneously. You can still
adjust the controller using the multi-purpose device instead of the app. If you want to adjust the orthosis with
the multi-purpose device or the NEURO TRONIC Expert app on a different mobile device, you must first close
the app currently connected to the controller.
The number of apps which can be unlocked with one multi-purpose device is not limited. This means
that an unlimited number of smartphones/tablets with the app NEURO TRONIC Expert can be unlocked
with one multi-purpose device.

If you have operated the orthosis with the app, you have to close the app in order to operate the
orthosis with the multi-purpose device.

12. Selecting a Mode
You can select the available modes AUTO, FREE and LOCK with the multi-purpose device/the app. The mode is
set, when the respective mode is displayed larger in the multi-purpose device than the others. With the multi-
purpose device, proceed as follows in order to change the mode:
1. Select the Auto mode by pressing the left arrow button. The LED mode indicator at the controller blinks
green.

13. Signal Function for Training Purposes
The signal function for training purposes acoustically supports the patient (e.g. during a gait re-education). When
the patient exercises walking with the orthosis, the orthosis provides a tone signal if the the signal function is
on. This signal indicates if the system joint is locked or free moving.
Via the settings, you can select the tone, the volume and the signal (see paragraph14.8 or 14.9). You can switch
off the signal tone by setting the volume to 0 (see paragraph 14.8.6).
14. Main Menu
In the main menu of the multi-purpose device/the app you can set various adjustments for the orthosis. In order
to go to the main menu, press the Set button of the multi-purpose device for three seconds. The app leads you
via the menu to the same functions.
The following menu items are displayed on the multi-purpose device:
- Pairing
- Activate (only for pairing a remote control
without Bluetooth)
- Battery Quality
- Cable Connection Test
- Settings
- Step Counter
-Language (not in the app)
- Device Info
- Select Other Leg (only when pairing two
controllers with the multi-purpose device)
- Controller Update
- Remote Control Update
- Activate App
There are two options to leave the menu items of the multi-purpose device:
1. If a menu item has more options, exit via the back arrow.
2. If a menu item has no other options, cancel the selection with BACK by pressing the Set button.
In order to operate or adjust the orthosis via an app, the orthosis has to be equipped with a controller
with Bluetooth.

14.1 Language
This menu item does not exist in the app as the language is automatically selected by the smartphone’s/tablet’s
settings.
For the multi-purpose device, you can switch between German and English, with German as preset language. In
order to change the language of the multi-purpose device, proceed as follows:
1. Select the menu item Language by browsing with the left and right arrow buttons.
2. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button.
3. Select the German or English language by browsing with the left and right arrow buttons.
4. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button.
When you have confirmed your selection, you will automatically get back to the main menu.
14.2 Pairing (Putting the Controller into Operation)
In order to establish a connection between the controller and the app, use the app’s menu and select the required
menu item for a connection with one or two controllers. Follow the instructions in the app.
In order to establish a connection between the controller and the multi-purpose device, proceed as follows:
1. Select the menu item Pairing by browsing with the left and right arrow buttons.
2. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button.
3. Activate the controller. At a controller without Bluetooth, you must remove and reinsert a battery. The LEDs
on the controller will light up briefly. At a controller without Bluetooth, press and hold the MODE switch
until you hear a short beep and, after about 6–10 seconds, a second, longer beep.
4. Select SEARCH by pressing the Set button (fig. 7) if there is not yet a connection between a device and the
multi-purpose device.
5. CONFIRM the found controller within 30 seconds by pressing the left arrow button (fig. 8).
The connection has been successfully established when you can see the message COMPLETED on the multi-
purpose device display (fig. 9).

Now, you can connect a second controller with the multi-purpose device,
if required. To do so, select YES by pressing the left arrow button for this
(fig. 10). If you connect a second controller, legs must be assigned to the
controllers. Select the leg for the second controller by pressing the left
arrow button for the left leg or the right arrow button for the right leg
(fig. 11). Then, the other leg is automatically assigned to the first controller.
Repeat points 3 to 5 in order to connect the second controller.
14.3 Controller Update
When updating the multi-purpose device/the app, the controller update is
downloaded simultaneously, if there is an update (see paragraph 17). With
the multi-purpose device/the app, you can update the chosen controller
by selecting the menu item Controller Update. If there is no update,
this menu item cannot be selected.
Always keep all controllers in use up to date.
14.4 Remote Control Update
When updating the multi-purpose device/the app, the remote control
update is downloaded simultaneously, if there is an update (see para-
graph17). If you want to check for a remote control update and perform
one, proceed as follows:
1. Press the Auto, Free and Lock button of the remote control at the same time for about four seconds (fig. 13).
2. Select the menu item Remote Control Update by browsing with the left and right arrow buttons.
3. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button.
4. If an update is available, confirm the remote control update by pressing the Set button.
Updating the remote control has been successful when you can see the message COMPLETED on the multi-purpose
device display. The LED of the remote control blinks green once. Always keep all remote controls in use up to date.
If you have connected two controllers, you can use the menu
item Select Other Leg to switch between the left and right leg.
The currently selected leg is displayed (fig. 12).

14.5 Activate (Putting the Remote Control into Operation)
This menu item is only available for a connection between the multi-purpose device and a remote control
without Bluetooth.
Via the menu item Activate you put the remote control for the patient into operation. You establish a
connection between the controller and the remote control with the multi-purpose device.
14.5.1 For One Orthosis
To activate the remote control, proceed as follows:
1. Select the menu item Activate by browsing with the left and right arrow buttons.
2. Press the Auto and Lock button of the remote control at the same time for about four seconds (fig. 14).
2.1 When the LED of the remote control blinks red, the buttons were not pressed at the same time. The
remote control cannot be activated. Try again (fig. 14).
2.2 When the LED blinks yellow, the remote control can be activated.
3. Press the Set button of the multi-purpose device in order to activate the remote control (fig. 15).
A remote control with Bluetooth can be directly connected with the controller and does not have to
be activated with the multi-purpose device (see manual NEURO TRONIC system knee joint).

14.5.2 For Two Orthoses
When treating both legs, you can decide to connect the controllers of both orthoses with one or two remote
controls. If you activate two remote controls, you can change the modes separately for each controller/orthosis.
If you activate only one remote control, the modes of both controllers/orthoses are changed simultaneously.
Activating Two Remote Controls for Two Controllers
After you have activated one remote control for one controller (see paragraph 14.5.1) you can activate a second
remote control additionally. You can change the modes of both controllers/orthoses separately.
Proceed as follows:
1. Select the menu item Select Other Leg by browsing with the left and right arrow buttons.
2. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button.
3. Select the menu item Activate by browsing with the left and right arrow buttons.
4. Repeat points 2 to 3 for the activation of one remote control for one orthosis (see paragraph 14.5.1) in order
to activate the second remote control.
Activating One Remote Control for Two Controllers
After you have activated one remote control for one controller (see paragraph 14.5.1) you can, within 60 seconds,
activate this remote control for a second controller as well. You can change the modes of both controllers/
orthoses simultaneously.
Proceed as follows:
1. Select the menu item Select Other Leg by browsing with the left and right arrow buttons.
2. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button.
3. Select the menu item Activate by browsing with the left and right arrow buttons.
4. Press the Auto and Lock button of the remote control at the same time for about four seconds.
If the orthoses are equipped with controllers with Bluetooth, the modes can be switched separately
or at the same time for the two controllers/orthoses with the app NEURO TRONIC Expert as well as
the app NEURO TRONIC User.

4.1 When the LED of the remote control does not blink or blinks red or yellow only once, pressing the but-
tons at the same time failed. The remote control cannot be activated. Try again or repeat points 2 to
3 for the activation of one remote control for one orthosis (see paragraph 14.5.1).
4.2 When the LED blinks yellow, the remote control can be activated.
5. Press the Set button of the multi-purpose device in order to activate the remote control for both controllers.
14.6 Cable Connection Test
You can check the cable connections to the solenoid on the orthosis with this test. To do so, put the orthosis
on a workbench.
1. Select the menu item Cable Connection Test by browsing with the left and right arrow buttons.
2. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button. Then, you receive the result of the cable connection test
for the solenoid.
14.6.1 Cable Connection Test Result Messages and Further Actions
The following test results refer to components that are explained more detailed in the manual NEURO TRONIC
system knee joint. These messages are displayed in the multi-purpose device as well as in the app.

If the remote control for the second controller is not activated within 60 seconds after the activation
for the first controller, the connection with the first controller is deleted and the second controller is
connected instead. In this case, repeat the points of paragraph 14.5.1 and 14.5.2. Mind the given time.
When you start the cable connection test, the orthosis switches automatically into Lock mode and
remains in this mode after the test. To change the mode, use the remote control/the app or the
multi-purpose device/the app.

14.7 Settings
In the menu item Settings you can adjust the orthosis. To enter the settings menu, proceed as follows:
1. Select the menu item Settings by browsing with the left and right arrow buttons.
2. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button.
The following settings are available:
- Calibrate
- Unlocking in mid stance
- Locking in terminal swing
- Tone Selection
- Volume
- Signal Selection
- Select Other Leg (only with two connected controllers, see paragraph 14.8.8)
14.7.1 Calibrate
In order for the motion sensors in the controller to detect the position of the lower leg, you have to calibrate
the orthosis for a first functional test before fitting. If you notice during the fitting that the orthosis is not yet
adjusted as required, repeat the calibration process. Let the patient wear the orthosis when you calibrate again
and proceed as follows:
1. Select the menu item Settings by browsing with the
left and right arrow buttons.
2. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button.
3. Select the menu item Calibrate by browsing with
the left and right arrow buttons.

5. Place the orthosis with shoe vertically on an even
surface (fig. 16). Hold the orthosis. Respect the basic
alignment of the orthosis while holding the orthosis
(see paragraph 7.1).

7. Place the orthosis horizontally on an even surface (fig.18). Hold the orthosis. Respect the individual exter-
nal rotation of the foot.
8. Select CONTINUE by pressing the Set button (fig. 19).
9. If the calibration procedure is finished, select EXIT by pressing the Set button. Then, you leave the menu
item Calibrate (fig. 20).
14.7.2 Unlocking in mid stance
With this menu item, you can fine adjust the point of time the NEUROTRONIC system knee joint unlocks in
midstance (see manual NEUROTRONIC system knee joint)
Proceed as follows:
1. Select the menu item Unlocking in mid stance by browsing with
the left and right arrow buttons.
2. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button.
3. Change the point of time when the system joint unlocks by pressing
the arrow buttons.
3.1 Press the left arrow button in order to unlock the system joint
earlier.
3.2 Press the right arrow button in order to unlock the system
joint later.
4. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button (fig. 21).
Let the patient exercise walking with the orthosis with the adjusted point of time of unlocking and adapt the
settings again, if required.
14.7.3 Locking in terminal swing
With this menu item, you can fine adjust the point of time the NEURO TRONIC system knee joint locks in terminal
swing (see manual NEURO TRONIC system knee joint)
Proceed as follows:
1. Select the menu item Locking in terminal swing by browsing with the left and right arrow buttons.
2. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button.
3. Change the point of time when the system joint locks by pressing the arrow buttons.
3.1 Press the left arrow button in order to lock the system joint earlier.
3.2 Press the right arrow button in order to lock the system joint later.

14.7.4 Tone Selection
Here you can select the tone for the signal function for training purposes for the patient (see paragraph 13).
You can select one out of two frequencies. This way, you can select a different tone for each controller/orthosis
when both patient’s legs are treated. In order to select a frequency, proceed as follows:
1. Select the menu item Settings by browsing with the left and right
arrow buttons.
2. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button.
3. Select the menu item Tone Selection by browsing with the left
and right arrow buttons.
4. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button.
5. Select the tone by browsing with the left and right arrow buttons.
5.1 For a low tone, select frequency 1.
5.2 For a high tone, select frequency 2.
6. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button (fig. 22).
14.7.5 Volume
Here you can set the volume of the signal tone for the signal function for training purposes for the patient. In
order to adapt the volume, proceed as follows:
1. Select the menu item Settings by browsing with the left and right
arrow buttons.
2. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button.
3. Select the menu item Volume by browsing with the left and
right arrow buttons.
4. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button.
5. Select the volume by browsing with the left and right arrow buttons.
The volume gets louder from 1 to 5.
5.1 For no tone, select volume 0.
5.2 For the loudest tone, select frequency 5.
6. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button (fig. 23).
14.7.6 Signal Selection
Here you can select signal type for the signal function for training purposes for the patient (see paragraph 13).
Signal tone 1 is preset. In order to determine when the signal tone is emitted, proceed as follows:
1. Select the menu item Settings by browsing with the left and right arrow buttons.
2. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button.
3. Select the menu item Signal Selection by browsing with the left and right arrow buttons.

5. Select the signal type by browsing with the left and right arrow buttons. You can select one out of four dif-
ferent setting options.
5.1 Signal tone 1 emits a signal as long as the system joint is free
moving.
5.2
Signal tone 2 emits a signal as long as the system joint is locked.
5.3 Signal tone 3 emits a short signal when the system joint switches
from free moving to locked and when it switches from locked
to free moving.
5.4 Signal tone 4 emits two short signals when the system joint
switches from free moving to locked and when it switches from
locked to free moving.
6. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button (fig. 24).
14.7.7 Select Other Leg
Here you can switch the leg if both patient’s legs are treated, in order to e.g. calibrate both controllers or turn
on the pressure sensors of both orthoses. In order to switch the leg, proceed as follows:
1. Select the menu item Settings by browsing with the left and right
arrow buttons.
2. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button.
3. Select the menu item Select Other Leg by browsing with the
left and right arrow buttons.
4. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button.
5. Select one leg by browsing with the left and right arrow buttons.
6. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button (fig. 25).
14.8 Battery Quality
Here you can check the quality of the battery/batteries in the controller with the multi-purpose device/the app.
The patient must not wear the orthosis when the battery quality test is performed.
At a controller with integrated lithium-ion battery, the battery quality is immediately apparent on the display/
in the app. If the battery quality is not good anymore, exchange the controller. Do not try to disassemble the
controller, as the battery is an integral part of the controller.
At a controller with exchangeable batteries, those have to be fully charged for the test. To do so, the battery
quality test cannot be carried out with two solenoids at the same time. If you have connected two NEUROTRONIC
system knee joints to one controller, disconnect one solenoid to carry out the test. In order to check the battery
quality, proceed as follows:
1. Insert fully charged batteries into the controller.
2. To go to the main menu of the multi-purpose device, press the Set button for three seconds.
3. Select the menu item Battery Quality by browsing with the left and right arrow buttons.
4. Confirm your selection by pressing the Set button.
5. Select CONTINUE by pressing the Set button.
