Introduction
Welcome
Welcome to the RangeGuard Installer’s Guide. This document explains how
and where to mount a RangeGuard system onto a vessel, how to install the
RangeGuard interface and how to configure the system parameters. For
instructions on how to use the system, please see 94-0447-4 RangeGuard
Operator’s Guide.
Note that the installation of a RangeGuard system is application
specific; assistance from Guidance Marine may be required to
achieve optimal performance.
The RangeGuard system is subject to further development. Whilst we
endeavour to describe its functionality correctly, we do not guarantee
that this document exactly represents the version of the system that
you are installing or operating.

System Overview
The RangeGuard system provides object detection and distance measurements using fixed beam radar sensors operating at 24GHz in the licence-exempt short
range device band.
A system comprises a RangeGuard controller with up to four sensors wired into it and the RangeGuard Display user interface. This is provided as a web server
interface which can be accessed by any web browser running on the same network.
The sensors are typically positioned around the outside of a vessel
and are connected to the controller via screened Cat 5e cable up to
a maximum length of 100m.
RangeGuard sensors have a fixed elevation beam width of 11°
(+/-5.5°) and are available in two azimuth beam options:
1. Wide beam (110°).
2. Narrow beam (11°).
By default the sensors measure the range of the nearest obstacle,
but can instead measure to selected objects that are further away,
by changing settings in the operator interface.
Sensors can be utilised in a number of configurations to provide
customised detection of objects around the vessel.
The RangeGuard system can be installed alongside video
monitoring equipment to provide distance measurements to objects
in view.

System Installation Considerations
The specific application of a RangeGuard system governs the choice and location of sensors, and these decisions are likely to have been made before installation.
However, note that the location of the controller is restricted by a maximum length of 100m for each connection between the controller and a sensor.
Prior to installation a vessel survey focussing on the cable routing is recommended, in order to ensure that the chosen location of the RangeGuard controller
conforms to the above cabling limitations.
It is recommended that the RangeGuard System be connected to the ships supply via a filtered UPS.
Any video equipment associated with the system should also be supplied by the RangeGuard UPS.
The RangeGuard controller is not designed for external mounting; it must be installed in a suitable enclosure.

Two wide beam sensors mounted on the operations side of the vessel with a maximum separation
of 20m.

Narrow beam sensor horizontally mounted between fenders and adjacent to the centreline of the
vessel.
Berthing aid
Horizontally stern and shoulder mounted and adjacent to the centreline of the vessel.

Wide beam sensor covering the blind spot.

Single wide beam sensor pointing towards the area the video is monitoring.

Sensors mounted around the perimeter of the vessel for local proximity hazard detection.
Training Aid
Used to confirm distance estimates of crew during close operations; narrow beam sensors
mounted as required.

RangeGuard sensors should be mounted well clear of VHF emergency band antennas.
RangeGuard sensors should be positioned to avoid irradiation by S or X band radar.
RangeGuard sensors should have an unobstructed view of the area or object being monitored.

Installing System Cables
Cable Specifications
The signal cables from the controller to the sensors carry power,
analogue control and data signals.
For ease of installation the sensor cabling is connected to the
RangeGuard controller as per installation of standard straight through
Ethernet screened cabling (T568B). See diagram to right.
Screened RJ45 plugs should be used.
The maximum length of cable for any sensor cable is 100m. The length
and integrity of the cable should be confirmed using an Ethernet data
cable tester on completion of connecting the RJ45 plugs.
The cable should be shielded flexible multi strand twisted pair cable (Cat5e or
similar) with a minimum wire gauge of 24AWG.

Installing and Configuring the RangeGuard Software
System Software Overview
The system software includes the RangeGuard Server and the RangeGuard Display software.
The RangeGuard Server and the RangeGuard Display are pre-installed on the RangeGuard controller.
In addition to the software suite installed on the RangeGuard controller, a remote display/control computer and any additional computer systems on board the vessel
can also be loaded with the RangeGuard Display. All such systems must be Windows 7 based and connected to the same network as the RangeGuard controller.
Getting Started
Opening User Interface directly from within the RangeGuard Controller
The RangeGuard controller has an integral PC which can be used to display the User Interface. Connect a Keyboard and Mouse to the available USB ports and a
Monitor to the VGA socket.
Launch the RangeGuard Display software using the shortcut on the desktop. Values should appear on the User Interface as soon as sensors are
plugged into the front panel. Systems with a single sensor licence (default unless specified otherwise) report data from only a single sensor.

Opening the User Interface Remotely
The RangeGuard controller can also serve the display up over a network. Connection can be direct (a Cat 5 network cable from the RangeGuard controller to a
laptop) or via a standard network.
Either way the connecting laptop must have its Local Area Connection set to the same subnet as the RangeGuard controller (192.168.2.xxx). The controller is set to
192.168.2.231 so xxx must be a value other than 231. The subnet mask should be set to 255.255.255.0.
Interfacing Data to Third Party Systems
Data can be made available for third party systems either via an HTTP request or Serial output. Please contact Guidance Marine for more details.

Configuring the System Parameters
The RangeGuard system parameters are accessed via the RangeGuard Display. In
general it should not be necessary to modify these, except for Label and Field of View.
To access the configuration screens click on the Settings button (spanner symbol) near
the top right corner of the main screen:
Enter the configuration settings password into the dialog box. The password is initially
“password”.
Then click the Login button.
The RangeGuard Control Panel will be displayed.

Control Panel - General Parameters
On the General screen of the RangeGuard Control
Panel, the following parameters should be set:
Sensors Active: Switches on the sensor display
and information on the Bird’s Eye View.
Show Profile: Enables the facility to display a
profile plot (signal strength versus range) for each
sensor.
Main log size limit: Default value is 1024 MB. If
the controller unit is not supplied with an integral PC
then this value can be reduced to limit the disk
space that the RangeGuard system uses for logging.
Debug log size limit: Default value is 1024 MB. If the controller unit is not supplied with an integral PC then this value can be reduced to limit the disk space used for
debug logging.
Choose display units appropriate for the application
and the theatre of operations:
Speed Units: Metres per second or knots.
Range Units: Metres or feet.
Once set any changes must be saved byclicking on the Save button at the top lefthand corner of the page.

Control Panel - Sensors Screen
This contains a parameter for the number of sensors in the
system and a block of settings per sensor for display and
configuration purposes.
Expected sensor count: Where the number of
sensors in the system is not going to change, enter
this number. Otherwise use zero (default), which
causes the system to automatically search and
identify each sensor connected.
Sensor Parameters
Each sensor is identified by the read-only Sensor ID string.
Set the following parameters for each:
Label: A user friendly name given to the sensor, to be used on the main RangeGuard Display. For example: Port FWD
De-spike Enabled: This should be ticked to guard against crosstalk if the positioning of two or more sensors mean that they might receive signals from each other.
Field of View: Set to 10 or 110 degrees. This value sets the conical shape displayed on the Bird’s Eye View of the RangeGuard Display to represent the radar
beam from this sensor. The value must correspond to the sensor type fitted (wide or narrow beam).
Gain: This is set according to the application and typical operating conditions. Changing this value from the default of 0.01 should only be done on the advice of
Guidance Marine.
DSP Filtering Method: Leave as the default of None. Do not change without advice from Guidance Marine.
Averaging Number: Increasing this value improves the stability of the measured range but also reduces the sensor responsiveness to variations in range. Changing
this value from the default of 1 should only be done on the advice of Guidance Marine.
Raw Log Location: The recording of raw data is a feature that is sometimes required for diagnostic purposes but rapidly fills storage space. Normally therefore this
field should be set to the default Disable Raw Log. Contact Guidance Marine for further information.

Control Panel - Vessel Screen
The vessel screen is used to define the picture of the vessel displayed on the
Bird’s Eye View and the position of each sensor on the vessel.
Vessel Image
This is a digital image file (JPG, PNG, BMP) normally displaying a plan view of the vessel.
In order to install an image:
1. Click on the LOAD IMAGE button
2. Click on Choose File. This opens a file dialog box.
3. Browse to the required image, click on it and press Open.
4. Click on LOAD.
Use the CLEAR IMAGE button to remove an image, or else simply load a new image to
replace the existing one.
After the file is loaded the size of the image on the screen may be too large or too small.
This can be adjusted by entering a new Image Resolution value in meters per pixel. Use
a larger value to expand the image and a smaller value to contract it.
