SYSTEM OVERVIEW
Features You Can Design into Your System
A typical system includes a control panel located in a closet or utility room, one or
more user keypads located in a hallway, bedroom, or an entry way, and various
sensors distributed at perimeter openings and key locations within the house. The
system is operated from the user keypad. The security sensors detect, alert, and
report abnormal conditions.The control panel synchronizes the functions of the
various devices.
Your system installation has been specifically designed to meet your security
requirements. A basic system can be further enhanced by increasing the extent of
protection (number of sensors) and the number of user keypad operating locations.
Each system is unique depending on the options you purchased. Your options can
include:
•Smoke and/or heat detectors to detect a fire outbreak.
•Remote point expander modules to add security capacity while simplifying the wiring.
•Wireless keys on your key chain that allow you to operate your system with the
simple push of a button.
•Emergency buttons to summon:
—Fire assistance.
—Police assistance.
—Special emergency aid such as medical assistance.
•Additional passcodes that let you grant use of your system to family members,
guests, and help without divulging your master code. Up to ten different codes can
be assigned; they can have temporary (one time) or unrestricted use. They can be
assigned varying authority so the users can have limited access to available
features of your system.
•Two partial arming features: force arming and bypassing let you selectively leave
some protected points disarmed while arming the rest of your system.
•Internal and external audible devices to alert and evacuate the inhabitants and
attract the attention of neighbors in the event of an emergency. The exterior audible
is briefly delayed to allow valid passcode holders to disarm the system in the event
of an inadvertent alarm.
•Special protection is available to separately safeguard important areas and objects
such as the intellectual property and valuable equipment in the home office, safe,
workshop, liquor cabinet, gun rack, etc.
•Pool protection is available that annunciates throughout the home that someone
has entered the pool area. It rings the exterior audible to attract the attention of
neighbors when you are away.
•System outputs can be used to operate remote displays and security-related
lighting.
•The Latch Key feature is available that tells the system to call your pager and let
you know that a specific person has disarmed your system.
•ATelephone Access feature may be added that will allow you to arm and disarm
the system from any touch tone telephone.
•The system can automatically operate lights when you enter and leave, on alarm
and randomly while you are away.

The purpose of this section is to give you a tour of your keypad and the buttons
located on your keypad. To find out how to operate your system, see the Standard
Operation or Custom Operation section for more information. In that section you will
find out how to:
•Arm and disarm your system.

Your system can include more than one user keypad. If so, each user keypad oper-
ates in conjunction with the others and your system can be controlled from any one of
them. Messages and any user-requested operations appear the same on all user
keypads at the same time. The sounds, except for those indicating an alarm, can be
silenced on selective displays to avoid waking up other household members when
returning home late. The following is a summary of functions of the keypad:
Smart Help During any user keypad interaction, if you pause more than seven
seconds without hitting a key, the system assumes that help is
appropriate at that time. The user keypad provides help for the
specific function you are performing. After help is provided, the
display returns to the current function. Seven seconds later, the
cycle is repeated and the specific help message is presented two
more times. The messages are always pertinent to the area of the
system you are currently using.
Two-Line Display Messages and menu choices display to tell you what is
happening with your system, including: system status and
location of alarms, open points, and system troubles. Additional
lines can be displayed by scrolling information two lines at a time.
LEDs Two red LEDs (lights) are located next to the arrow keys. The
LED next to the UP arrow, when lit, indicates that some special
protection is turned off or security points were bypassed. The
LED next to the DOWN arrow, when lit, indicates a point of
protection such as a window or door is open.
Audible
Feedback Each time you press any key, an audible tone sounds to confirm successful entry of a digit or function.
Numeric Keys Press these keys to enter passcodes and make menu selections.
Press and hold FIRE for two seconds anytime, regardless of
mode or security system status, to transmit a fire alarm to the
Customer Service Center and sound an audible alarm. The
Customer Service Center dispatches the fire department and
notifies the first available person on your Call List.
Press and hold POLICE for two seconds anytime, regardless of
mode or security system status, to transmit an alarm to the
Customer Service Center. The Customer Service Center
dispatches the police and notifies the first available person on
your Call List. POLICE can be programmed to be silent or sound
an audible alarm; however, the user keypad continues to display
POLICE ALARM.
The SPECIAL function of your system was determined at the time
of installation. When monitoring of this key is included, press and
hold SPECIAL for two seconds to transmit an alarm to the
Customer Service Center. The Customer Service Center
dispatches the pre-determined help and notifies the first available
person on your Call List. The SPECIAL key can be programmed
to be audible or silent; however, the user keypad continues to
display SPECIAL ALARM.

System Limitations
Not even the most advanced alarm system can guarantee protection against burglary,
fire, or environmental problems. All alarm systems are subject to possible compromise
or failure-to-warn for a variety of reasons including, but not limited to, the following:
•If sirens or horns are placed outside the hearing range of people in remote areas
of the building or in areas which are frequently closed off, their presence may not
provide the protection they are intended to provide.
•If intruders gain access through unprotected points of entry, the system will not
detect their entrance.
•If intruders have the technical means of bypassing, jamming, or disconnecting all
or part of the system, they will not be detected.
•If the ac power supply is off and the back-up battery is either missing or dead,
sensors will not detect intrusion.
•Smoke sensors cannot detect smoke in chimneys, walls, or roofs, or smoke
blocked by a closed door. They may not detect smoke or fire on a level of the
building different from the one in which they are located. Smoke detectors may not
be able to adequately warn of fires started by explosions, improper storage of
flammables, overloaded electrical circuits, or other types of hazardous conditions.
•If telephone lines are out of service, signals from the security system to the
security company cannot be sent. Telephone lines are vulnerable to compromise
by several means.
Press these keys to scroll through menus having more than two
selections and also to view points not ready or bypassed.
Whenever the LED is lit next to the down arrow, pressing that
arrow will show all points not ready. Whenever the LED next to
the up arrow is lit, pressing that arrow will show all points that are
bypassed and special protection points that are disarmed.
Modes control the amount of protection that is on. Press MODES
to display a menu of the modes pre-programmed for your system.
Use the arrow keys to scroll up or down to see additional
selections. Use the number keys to make your selection.
Press OPTIONS to display the Options menu to make system
changes such as bypassing points of protection or changing a
passcode. Use arrow and number keys to locate and make
selections.
Press OK to confirm selections.
Press CANCEL to cancel a menu selection or operation. If you
are at a menu selection, CANCEL allows you to return to the
previous screen. Cancel does not turn off alarms. Alarms are
turned off by entering your passcode.

•Auser may not be able to reach a panic or emergency button quickly enough.
•Passive infrared motion detectors can only detect intrusion within the designed
ranges as diagrammed in the motion detector’s installation manual. They cannot
detect motion or intrusion that takes place behind walls, ceilings, floors, closed
doors, glass partitions, glass doors, or windows. Mechanical tampering, masking,
painting, or spraying of any material on the mirrors, windows, or any part of the
optical system can reduce their detection ability. Passive infrared detectors sense
changes in temperature; however, as the ambient temperature of the protected
area approaches the temperature range of 90°to 105°F, the detection performance
can decrease.
•Even if the system responds to the emergency as intended, however, occupants
may have insufficient time to protect themselves from the emergency situation. In
the case of a monitored alarm system, authorities may not respond appropriately.
This equipment, like other electrical devices, is subject to component failure. Inadequate
maintenance and failure to test are the most common causes of alarm failure. It is
strongly recommended that you test your system once a week to be sure that
all system components are working properly. See the System Testing section on
page 60 for information on how to test your system.
Although having an alarm system may make you eligible for reduced insurance
premiums, the system is not a substitute for insurance. Warning devices cannot
compensate you for loss of life or property.
Wireless Device Limitations
If your system includes wireless devices, beware of the following limitations:
•Wireless devices will not work without power. Battery-operated devices will not
work without batteries, with dead batteries, or if the batteries are not put in
properly.
•Wireless transmitters are designed to depend on batteries that have a limited life.
Longevity of batteries may be as much as 4 to 7 years, depending on the environ-
ment and usage. The wireless system will alert you to low battery situations, thus
allowing you time to arrange a change of the battery to maintain protection for that
given point within the system.
•Signals sent by wireless transmitters may be blocked by metal before they reach
the alarm receiver. Even if the signal path has been recently checked during a
weekly test, blockage can occur if a metal object is moved into the path.
•In some situations, a wireless panic button may have a signaling range of several
hundred feet from the protected home. Emergency personnel will respond to the
address of the protected home. A user who activates a wireless panic button may
be too far away from the protected home to be located by responding emergency
personnel.
