General information
The Interface Box IF 2 enables the recording or control of instruments
that are not supported by the KNAUER software over four channels. It
can be used for detector recording over the analog inputs, it can control
the flow rate for HPLC pumps over the analog outputs, or it can switch
valves over the digital outputs. However, the respective instrument must
support this option. Please refer to the respective instrument manual
regarding this option.
The Interface Box IF 2 does not have a stand-alone function; therefore,
control software (KNAUER ChromGate®as of version 3.1 or KNAUER
EuroChrom®2000 for Windows as of version 3.05) is mandatory.
The Interface Box IF 2 functions that are supported by the control
software can be found in the software manual. Configuring and
programming the Interface Box IF 2 control software (as a Smartline
Manager 5000 Interface Module) is described in the respective
manual of the software.

The light-emitting diodes give information about the condition of the
Interface Box IF 2. If the Interface Box IF 2 is connected with the power
supply cable and is switched on the green “Power” LED lights

permanently. The green “Busy” LED lights shortly during calibration or
when a command from the software is received. The instrument is
calibrated when it’s turned on or a chromatographic run is started. If the
control software regularly inquires about the status of the instrument (e.g.
in second intervals), then the “Busy” LED will permanently light.
The red “Error” LED lights when a calibration error is detected in a self-
test or when the software sends a command to the instrument that does
not exist.

Please pay attention to the maximal voltage and current of the
inputs and outputs on the Interface Box IF 2 and on the instruments
that will be controlled. If the maximum voltage and current are
exceeded, KNAUER is not liable for defective instruments!
Analog Inputs (AN.IN)
To record from analog signals, up to four channels or instruments can be
connected with the Interface Box IF 2. The channels are independent of
each other, meaning all channels can be simultaneously operated from
either one system or various systems.

Analog Outputs (AN.OUT)
The outputs distribute analog voltage signals, so that instruments
containing a respective input can be controlled. Depending on the
number of outputs, up to four instruments can be controlled. The outputs
can be independently programmed which enables the programming of
high pressure gradient system pumps.

Digital Inputs (DIG.IN)
These four inputs are intended as a trigger (start signal) input for the start
signal that is distributed by the injection system. They work with contact
closure on mass and are compatible with TTL/CMOS or the Open
Collector. If the channels are used in separated systems, then every
channel can be separately started.

Digital Outputs (DIG.OUT)
These four outputs are carried out in electromechanical relays with a
single pole double trough (SPDT). They can be selected as NO (normally
open; connection 2-3, see the back panel view) or NC (normally closed
connection 1-2, see the back panel view). Pulse or continuous signals
can be programmed. The length of a pulse contains approximately 1s;
the length of the continuous signal can be freely programmed.

This interface is a 9-pin standard RS-232 interface (also known as a
serial interface or COM port) and is connected to a PC in order to realize
the software control of the interface.

Connecting the Interface Box IF 2
Power supply
The Interface Box IF 2 is equipped with a defaut power supply. The
required cable is included in the Interface Box IF 2’s accessory kit.
Interface Box IF 2 on the PC (RS-232)
In order to connect the Interface Box IF 2 with a PC, a standard zero
modem cable is required and is included in the Interface Box IF 2
accessory kit. The configuration of the Interface Box IF 2 are specified
under “RS-232 Interface”.
Analog Inputs
In order to connect the analog output of the respective instrument (e.g.
the integrator output of a detector) with the analog input of the Interface
Box IF 2, use the Cinch cable that is made by the instrument’s
manufacturer and delivered with the instrument. Alternatively, a suitable
cable can be found in the Interface Box IF 2 accessory kit. Please pay
attention to the maximal voltage. If it is exceeded, the instrument can be
damaged.
The analog input and digital output of one channel can not be used
simultaneously.
Analog Outputs
The analog outputs must be connected with the respective control input
of the instrument to be controlled. Information regarding the control input
of the instrument can be found in the respective instrument’s manual.
Please pay attention to the maximal voltage and current of the in and
outputs on the Interface Box IF 2 and on the instruments that will be
controlled. If the maximum voltage and current are exceeded, KNAUER
is not liable for defective instruments!
The WAGO plug strips and cable that are required for connection are
included in the Interface Box IF 2 accessory kit.
The analog input and digital output of one channel can not be used
simultaneously.
Digital Connections
The digital inputs can be used to forward a trigger (start) from the
injection unit. The trigger (start) signal must always be connected to the
digital input of the same channel to which the detector for data recording
is connected.
The digital outputs can be programmed over the control software.
The WAGO plug strips and cable that are required for connection are
included in the Interface Box IF 2 accessory kit.
If a NO is required, pins 2 and 3 (see back panel view) must be
connected. However, if a NC is required, pins 1 and 2 must be connected
(see back panel view).
If a channel’s analog input is used, the digital output of this channel
can not be programmed. In this case, a pulse signal is delivered
over the digital output DIG.OUT when a run is started. This can be
used as an autozero signal for a detector.

Installation of the WAGO service cable
In order to clamp the cable on the desired positions of the WAGO plug,
please follow the directions below:
1. Insert the rounded end of the lever latch into
the square opening of the selected connector
of the plug strip.
2. Press the latch down as indicated by arrow.
3. Insert the uninsulated end of the cable into the
opening under the latch.
4. Release the latch (1) and remove the lever
latch from the plug (2).
The cable is now firmly anchored in the plug strip.

Example of the Cabling
The exemplary cabling plan demonstrates how the respective
connections can be switched. However, it is important that the analog
input of a channel is never simultaneously operated with the digital output
of the same channel, except as an autozero signal for the connected
detector.

Generelle Informationen
Die Interface Box IF 2 ermöglicht die Datenaufnahme bzw. die Steuerung
von Geräten über 4 Kanäle, die von der KNAUER Software nicht
unterstützt werden. Das können Datenaufnahmen von Detektoren über
die Analogeingänge, die Flusssteuerung bei HPLC-Pumpen über die
Analogausgänge oder das Schalten von Ventilen über die
Digitalausgänge sein. Voraussetzung dafür ist, dass das entsprechende
Gerät dies unterstützt, Hinweise dazu erhalten Sie aus dem Handbuch
des entsprechenden Gerätes.
Die Interface Box IF 2 hat keine Standalone-Funktionalität, eine
Steuersoftware (KNAUER ChromGate®ab Version 3.1 oder KNAUER
EuroChrom®2000 for Windows ab Version 3.05) ist zwingend
erforderlich.
Welche Funktionen der Interface Box IF 2 von der Steuersoftware
unterstützt werden, entnehmen Sie bitte dem Handbuch der
Software. Die Konfigurierung und Programmierung der Interface
Box IF 2 (als Smartline Managers 5000 Interface Modul) in der
Steuersoftware sind im Handbuch der entsprechenden Software
beschrieben.

Die Leuchtdioden geben Aufschluss über den Zustand der Interface Box
IF 2. Ist das Gerät eingeschaltet gibt die grüne „Power“ LED darüber
Auskunft. Die grüne „Busy“ LED leuchtet beim Kalibrieren oder beim
Erhalt eines Befehls von der Steuersoftware kurz auf. Das Gerät wird
beim Einschalten und beim Start eines Runs kalibriert. Fragt die
Steuersoftware den Status des Gerätes regelmäßig, z. B. im
Sekundentakt, ab, leuchtet die „Busy“ LED permanent.
Die rote „Error“ LED leuchtet, wenn beim Selbsttest ein Kalibrierfehler
festgestellt wurde oder wenn die Software einen nicht im Befehlssatz
enthaltenen Befehl an das Gerät geschickt hat.

der Ein- und Ausgänge an der Interface Box IF 2 und an den zu
steuernden Geräten. KNAUER kann bei durch Überschreitung
derselben hervorgerufenen Defekten keine Haftung übernehmen!
Analoge Eingänge (AN.IN)
Gedacht für die Aufnahme von Analogsignalen, können bis zu vier
Kanäle bzw. Geräte mit der Interface Box IF 2 verbunden werden. Die
Kanäle sind unabhängig voneinander, das bedeutet, dass alle Kanäle
entweder von einem System oder von verschiedenen Systemen
gleichzeitig benutzt werden können.

Analoge Ausgänge (AN.OUT)
Diese Ausgänge geben analoge Spannungssignale aus, mit denen
Geräte, die einen entsprechenden Eingang aufweisen, angesteuert
werden können. Entsprechend der Anzahl der Ausgänge können vier
dieser Geräte gesteuert werden. Die Ausgänge können unabhängig
voneinander programmiert werden. Damit ist z.B. die Ansteuerung von
Pumpen eines Hochdruckgradientensystems möglich.

Digitale Eingänge (DIG.IN)
Diese 4 Eingänge sind als Trigger (Startsignal) -Eingang für das vom
Injektionssystem ausgegebene Startsignal gedacht. Sie arbeiteten mit
Kontaktschluss auf Masse und sind TTL/CMOS bzw. Open Collector
kompatibel. Werden die Kanäle in getrennten Systemen verwendet, kann
jeder Kanal separat gestartet werden.

Digitale Ausgänge (DIG.OUT)
Diese 4 Ausgänge sind als elektromechanische Relais mit einpoligem
Umschalter (SPDT) ausgeführt, sind also wahlweise als NO (normally
open; Anschluss 2-3, s. Abb. 2) oder NC (normally closed; Anschluss 1-2,
s. Abb. 2) zu verwenden. Es können Puls- oder Dauersignale
programmiert werden. Die Dauer eines Pulses beträgt ca. 1 s, die Länge
des Dauersignals kann frei programmiert werden.

RS232 Schnittstelle
Diese Schnittstelle ist eine 9-polige Standard- RS232 Schnittstelle (auch
serielle Schnittstelle oder COM-Port genannt) für die Verbindung mit

Box IF 2 realisiert wird.

Anschließen des Interface Box IF 2
Stromversorgung
Die Stromversorgung wird über die Kaltgerätesteckdose an der Rückseite
der Interface Box IF 2 (s. Abb. 13) sichergestellt. Das erforderliche Kabel
befindet sich im Beipack zum Interface Box IF 2.
Interface Box IF 2 an PC (RS232)
Für die Verbindung der Interface Box IF 2 mit einem PC wird ein
Standard Nullmodemkabel (female/female) benötigt, das dem Beipack
Interface Box IF 2 beiliegt. Die Belegung des Anschlusses und die
Konfiguration der Schnittstelle sind unter „RS232 Schnittstelle“
angegeben.
Analogeingänge
Um den Analogausgang des entsprechenden Gerätes (z.B. 1 V-
Integratorausgang eines Detektors) mit dem Analogeingang der Interface
Box IF 2 zu verbinden, benutzen Sie ein vom Hersteller des Gerätes
mitgeliefertes oder empfohlenes Cinch-Kabel. Alternativ können Sie auch
ein im Beipack des Interface Box IF 2 befindliches passendes Kabel
verwenden. Bitte beachten Sie die Hinweise zur erlaubten
Maximalspannung. Bei Überschreitung kann das Gerät zerstört werden.
Der Analogeingang und der Digitalausgang des selben Kanals
können nicht gleichzeitig benutzt werden.
Analogausgänge
Die Analogausgänge müssen mit dem entsprechenden Steuereingang
des zu steuernden Gerätes verbunden werden. Informationen zum
Steuereingang des Gerätes finden Sie im Handbuch des entsprechenden
Gerätes. Bitte beachten Sie die Hinweise zur erlaubten
Maximalspannung. Bei Überschreitung kann das Gerät zerstört werden.
KNAUER kann für diesen Fall nicht haftbar gemacht werden. Die zur
Verbindung erforderlichen WAGO-Steckerleisten und Kabel sind im
Beipack zum Interface Box IF 2 enthalten.
Der Analogeingang und der Digitalausgang des selben Kanals
können nicht gleichzeitig benutzt werden.
Digitalverbindungen
Die Digitaleingänge können zur Weiterleitung eines von der
Injektionseinheit kommenden Trigger (Start) –Signals verwendet werden.
Als Anschluss für das Trigger (Start) –Signal dient immer der
Digitaleingang des Kanals, der auch für die Datenaufnahme vom
Detektor verwendet wird.
Die Digitalausgänge können über die Steuersoftware programmiert
werden.
Die zur Verbindung erforderlichen WAGO-Steckerleisten und Kabel sind
im Beipack zum Interface Box IF 2 enthalten. Wird ein NO benötigt,
müssen die Kontakte 2 und 3 (s. Bild Rückseite), für einen NC die
Kontake 1 und 2 (s. Bild Rückseite) angeschlossen werden.
Wird der Analogeingang eines Kanals benutzt, kann der
Digitalausgang dieses Kanals nicht programmiert werden. Über den
Digitalausgang D.OUT wird in diesem Fall beim Start eines Runs ein
Pulssignal ausgegeben, der z. B. als Autozerosignal für einen
Detektor verwendet werden kann.

Montage der WAGO-Anschlussleitungen
Um die Kabel an den gewünschten Positionen der WAGO-Stecker
festzuklemmen, folgen Sie bitte untenstehender Anweisung
1. Führen Sie die abgerundete Seite des
Hebelwerkzeugs am ausgewählten Anschluss
in die quadratische Öffnung des Steckers.
2. Drücken Sie den Hebel wie durch den Pfeil
angezeigt nach unten fest.
3. Führen Sie das nicht isolierte Ende des
Kabels in die Öffnung unter dem Hebel ein.
4. Lassen Sie zunächst den Hebel (1) wieder
nach oben federn und entfernen Sie dann das
Hebelwerkzeug aus dem Stecker (2).
Das Kabel ist jetzt im Anschlussstecker gut
verankert.

Verkabelungsbeispiel
Dieser Verkabelungsplan soll beispielhaft zeigen, wie die
entsprechenden Anschlüsse geschaltet werden können. Dabei ist zu
beachten, dass der Digitalausgang eines Kanals niemals gleichzeitig mit
dem Analogeingang desselben Kanals benutzt werden kann, es sei denn
als Autozerosignal für den am Analogeingang angeschlossenen Detektor.

Warranty statement
The warranty period of the Interface Box IF 2 is 12 months beginning
from the date of dispatch from Berlin. Operation inconsistent with
manufacturer's instructions or damage caused by unauthorized service
personnel are excluded from guarantee. Damage caused by blockages
and wear and tear parts such as fuses and seals are not covered by the
guarantee. Defective Interface Box IF 2 should be sent to the
manufacturer for repair.

Verstopfungsschäden sowie Verpackungs- und Versandkosten von der
