EA640isahighperformancehydrographicwidebandsinglebeamechosounder.The
echosounderisdevelopedforhydrographicuseindeeptomediumdepthwaters.It
canalsobeusedasahydrophonesystem.
Formaximumexibilityandease

Windows®10operatingsystem.The
EA640softwarecanberunonany
mediumrangeWindowscompatible
commercialcomputer.
Widebandfrequencysweep(FM)
incombinationwithadvancedsignal
processinggivesanexceptionallygoodsignaltonoiseratioandrangeresolution.
TheEA640offersinternalstorageofallrawsampledata.Thisincludesallexternalinput
sensordataforreplaypurposes.Ahighlyexibleprocessingregimemakesitpossible
tologhighdensitycomplexrawdataforadvancedpost-processing.Werecommend
usinganadditionalexternalstoragedevice.
Youcansetupthedisplaytosuityourspecialneeds.Youcanchoosedifferent
presentationsonthescreenforechograms,digitaldepth,mapsandotherfeatures.Save
usersettingsfordifferentoperationsandusethemagainforsimilaroperations.EA640
alsooffersamapviewthatpresentsthevesseltrackinanimportedmap.
EA640supportsawiderangeofinputsfromthirdpartysensorsandyoucanalsoexport
thesedataanddatafromEA640toawiderangeofdifferentoutputs.
Availablefrequenciesspanfrom10to500kHz.Avarietyofhighlyefcienttransducers

KongsbergMaritimetosuittheEA640requirements.
ThecomputermaybeaHydrographicWorkStation
(HWS).Thisisacomputerthatisdeliveredasa
desktopmodelorina19"racktrayandisdeliveredwithaseparatemonitor.The
computermaybeaHydrographicOperatorStation(HOS).Thisisacomputerwitha
built-intouchmonitor.TheEA640canalsobedeliveredwithalaptop,orevenatablet.
Transceiver
Thetransceiverisprovidedtotransmitacousticenergythroughwater.Thistransmission
andreceptionarecommonlyreferredtoasaping.Aftereachtransmission,the
transceiverreceivestheechoesfromtheseabedand/orthewatercolumn.Theseechoes
areltered,ampliedandnallyconvertedintodigitalformat.
TheWideBandTransceiver(WBT)comprisesarugged
boxprovidingallnecessarytransmitterandreceiver
electronics.Thereceiverisdesignedforlownoise,
anditcanhandleinputsignalsspanningaverylarge
instantaneousdynamicamplituderange.
Ahigh-qualityEthernetcableconnectstheWide
BandTransceiver(WBT)tothecomputer.Thedistancebetweenthecomputerandthe
transceivercanbeextendeduptomaximum70meters.Ifalongercableisrequired,cut
itinhalf,andinsertanEthernetswitchtoprovidebufferamplication.

IfmorethanoneWideBandTransceiver(WBT)isused,asmallhigh-capacityEthernet
switchisrequiredtoconnectthetransceiverstothecomputer .
TheWideBandTransceiver(WBT)requiresanexternalpowersupplyoffering12to
15Vdc,minimum5A.Asuitablepowersupplyisprovidedwiththedelivery.The
transceivercanalsobepoweredbyalargecapacitybattery.

Noisesources
TheoperationalperformanceoftheEA640systemdependsonthenoiseconditions.It
isessentialthatthenoisesignatureisaslowaspossible.
Thevessel’shull,rudder(s)andpropeller(s)mustbethoroughlyinspectedindrydock
priortoinstallation.
Roughnessbelowthewater-linedeformitiesintheshellplatingandprotrudingobstacles
cancreateunderwaternoise.Thesesourcesofturbulencemustbesmoothedorremoved
asbestaspossible.
Note
Itisespeciallyimportantthatthepropeller(s)arenotpittedordamaged.
Networksecurity
IfaEA640systemisconnectedtoalocalareanetwork,datasecurityisimportant.
EquipmentmanufacturedbyKongsbergMaritimeisfrequentlyconnectedtothevessel's
localareanetwork(LAN).Whenyouconnectacomputertoalocalareanetworkyou
willalwaysexposethedataonthatcomputer.Allothercomputersconnectedtothesame
networkmaybeabletoaccessyourdata.Severalthreatsmayimmediatelyoccur:
•Remotecomputerscanreadthedata.
•Remotecomputerscanchangethedata.
•Remotecomputerscanchangethebehaviorofthecomputer,forexamplebyinstalling
unwantedsoftware.
Usually,twoparametersareusedtodenethethreatlevel:
1Thelikelihoodthatanyremotecomputerwilldoanyoftheabove.
2Thedamagedoneifaremotecomputersucceedsdoingthis.
KongsbergMaritimehasnoinformationregardingthecompletesysteminstallationon
anyvessel.SystemsprovidedbyKongsbergMaritimeareregardedasstand-aloneofine
systems.Theyarestand-aloneeventhoughtheymaybeconnectedtoanetworkfor
sensorinterfacesand/ordatadistribution.
Note
NonetworksafetyapplicationsareinstalledonKongsbergMaritimecomputers.The
computersarethereforenotprotectedagainstviruses,malwareorunintentionalaccess
byexternalusers.
SecuringtheEA640systemitselfhasnomeaningunlessthereisapolicyinplacethat
securesallcomputersinthenetwork.Thispolicymustincludephysicalaccessby

trainedandtrustedusers.Thecustomer/enduseroftheEA640systemwillalwaysbe
inchargeofdeningandimplementingasecurity,policyandprovidingtherelevant
networksecurityapplications.

•Denitionofwhichprogramsareallowedtorunoneachcomputer.
•Loggingmechanismofcomputeractivity,andinspectionoftheselogs.
Howtodeneandimplementtheserulesdependsoneachenduser'snetworksystem
conguration,whichagainmustbearesultofthepoliciesandthreatlevelstheenduser
hasdenedforthecompleteinstallation.Forsomeproductsthenetworkconsistsofonly
processorunitsand/orworkstations,transceiversandafewsensors.Onothervessels,
largercomputersystemscanbeinstalledtoincludenumerousproductsanddatasystems.
