Informationen zum Vorbild
Die Großherzogliche Badische Staatsbahn bestellte 1915 bei
Maffei in München 20 Lokomotiven mit der Achsfolge 2‘C1‘ (Pa-
cific), um die Rheintalbahn effektiver betreiben zu können. Die
als IVh bezeichnete Lokomotive sollte hauptsächlich zwischen
Mannheim und Basel zum Einsatz kommen und daher wurde
die Konstruktion kompromisslos als Flachland-Schnellzuglo-
komotive ausgelegt. Der Treibraddurchmesser von 2.100 mm
wurde von einer Lok ihrer Achsfolge nur von der 18 201 der
Deutschen Reichsbahn übertroffen. Die Höchstgeschwindig-
keit wurde dennoch mit 110 km/h angesetzt, was bremstech-
nische Ursachen hatte. Als 1920 die letzten IVh vom Hersteller
übergeben wurden, war die Badische Staatsbahn bereits in die
Deutsche Reichsbahn eingegliedert, die alle 20 Lokomotiven
als Baureihe 18.3 in ihren Bestand einreihte. Die Maschinen
wurden im Bw Offenburg stationiert und waren die Parade-
schnellzugloks auf der Rheintalstrecke und auch sehr oft vor
dem neuen Luxuszug der Reichsbahn, dem Rheingold anzutref-
fen. Den 2. Weltkrieg überstanden bis auf eine alle Lokomoti-
ven der Baureihe 18.3, für die die junge Deutsche Bundesbahn
keine Verwendung fand und sie ausmusterte. Mit dem Wieder-
aufbau der Infrastruktur und der Normalisierung des Bahnver-
kehrs wuchs der Bedarf an schnellen Versuchslokomotiven
und die Deutsche Bundesbahn sah sich zur Rekonstruktion
von drei, bereits abgestellten Lokomotiven der Baureihe 18.3,
gezwungen. Die Lokomotiven wurden dementsprechend mo-
difiziert und leisteten viele Jahre wertvolle Arbeit für das Lo-
komotiv-Versuchsamt in Minden. Erst 1969 wurden die letzten
beiden Lokomotiven abgestellt und die schönen Lokomotiven
sind als Denkmäler für die Länderbahnära erhalten geblieben.
Information about the Prototype
In 1915, the Grand Ducal Baden State Railways ordered 20 lo-
comotives with a 4-6-2 wheel arrangement (Pacific) from Maf-
fei in Munich in order to operate the Rhine Valley line more ef-
ficiently. This locomotive type was designated as the IVh and
was planned mainly for use between Mannheim and Basel.
The design was therefore laid out purely as an express loco-
motive for flat terrain. The driving wheel diameter of 2,100 mm /
82-11/16“ was exceeded only by road no. 18 201 of the Ger-
man State Railroad Company for a locomotive of its wheel ar-
rangement. The maximum speed was set at 110 km/h / 69 mph
however due to the brake technology of the time. When the last
class IVh locomotives were delivered by the builder in 1920, the
Baden State Railways were already incorporated into the Ger-
man State Railroad, which took all 20 locomotives into its roster
as the class 18.3. These units were stationed at the mainte-
nance facility in Offenburg and were the flagship express loco-
motive on the Rhine Valley line. They could often be seen pulling
the German State Railroad‘s new luxury train, the Rheingold.
Except for one unit, all of the class 18.3 locomotives survived
World War II. The new German Federal Railroad had no use
for them and they were retired. With the reconstruction of
the infrastructure and the normalization of the rail service,
the need for fast experimental locomotives grew, and the
German Federal Railroad was forced to overhaul three of the
stored class 18.3 locomotives. These locomotives were modi-
fied accordingly and gave many years of valuable service for
the Locomotive Experimental Bureau in Minden. The last two
locomotives were stored in 1969 and these beautiful units re-
main preserved as monuments for the provincial railroad era.

Informations concernant lan locomotive réelle
En 1915, les chemins de fer du Grand Duché de Bade comman-
dèrent à Maffei à Munich 20 locomotives avec la disposition
d’essieux 2’C1’ (Pacific 231) afin de pouvoir exploiter la ligne de la
vallée du Rhin de manière plus rentable. La locomotive, immatri-
culée dans la série IVh, devait être utilisée essentiellement entre
Mannheim et Bâle ; elle fut donc conçue exclusivement comme
locomotive pour trains rapides sur lignes de plaine. Le diamètre
des roues motrices de 2100 mm ne fut dépassé par une locomo-
tive avec la même disposition d’essieux que par la 18 201 de la
Deutsche Reichsbahn. Pour des raisons techniques relatives
au freinage, la vitesse maximale fut toutefois fixée à 110 km/h.
Lorsque la dernière IVh fut livrée par le fabricant en 1920, les
chemins de fer badois avaient déjà fusionné avec la Deutsche
Reichsbahn, qui incorpora les 20 locomotives dans son parc,
immatriculées dans la série 18.3. Leur dépôt d’attache était Of-
fenburg et elles furent les locomotives de parade pour trains ra-
pides sur la ligne de la vallée du Rhin, très souvent visibles en tête
du «Rheingold», nouveau train de luxe de la Reichsbahn. Toutes
les locomotives de la série 18.3 – exceptée une – survécurent à
la 2nde guerre mondiale, mais la jeune Deutsche Bundesbahn ne
leur trouva pas d’utilisation et les réforma. Avec la reconstruction
de l’infrastructure et la normalisation du trafic ferroviaire grandit
le besoin de locomotives d’essai rapides et la Deutsche Bundes-
bahn se vit obligée de reconstruire trois des locomotives de la
série 18.3 déjà réformées. Les locomotives furent transformées
en conséquence et, durant de longues années, fournirent de
précieux services au «Locomotiv-Versuchsamt» (bureau d’essai
pour locomotives) de Minden. Ce n’est qu’en 1969 que les deux
dernières locomotives furent réformées et les belles locomotives
ont été conservées en souvenir de l’époque des Länderbahnen.

De maximumsnelheid werd niettemin op 110 km/h ingesteld,
wat remtechnische redenen had. Toen in 1920 de laatste IVh
door de fabrikant overgegeven werden, was de Badische
Staatsbahn reeds in de Deutsche Reichsbahn opgenomen, die
alle 20 locomotieven als serie 18.3 in haar bestand indeelde.
De machines werden in het Bw Openburg gestationeerd en
waren de paradesneltreinlocs op de Rheintalstrecke en ook
heel vaak voor de nieuwe luxe trein van de Reichsbahn, de
Rheingold, aan te treffen. Op één na doorstonden alle locomo-
tieven van de serie 18.3 de Tweede Wereldoorlog, waarvoor
de jonge Deutsche Bundesbahn geen toepassing vond en
ze buiten dienst stelde. Met de wederopbouw van de infra-
structuur en de normalisering van het spoorverkeer groeide
de behoefte aan snelle testlocomotieven en de Deutsche
Bundesbahn zag zich tot de reconstructie van drie, reeds af-
gestelde locomotieven van de serie 18.3, genoodzaakt. De
locomotieven werden dienovereenkomstig gemodificeerd
en leverden vele jaren waardevol werk voor het Lokomotiv-
Versuchsamt in Minden. Pas in 1969 werden de beide laatste
locomotieven afgesteld en de mooie locomotieven zijn als mo-
numenten voor het Länderbahn-tijdperk bewaard gebleven.
