System description
Principle of operation
NIBE ELK 15 is an electric heater that is primarily intended
for installation together with a heat pump for heating
buildings.
ELK 15 contains overheat protection and contactors for
external control of the two power groups, 5 and 10 kW.
Time delay is recommended according to the Swedish
Power Association standards when connected power ex-
ceeds 6 kW.
The electric heater is in principle an immersion heater
mounted in a water container or an electric boiler without
a water heater.
The stainless steel electric coils and electric boiler tube are
made of stainless steel (SIS 2333) which gives a very good
service life.
Economical
A small water volume and a well insulated cassette mean
small heat losses.

Maintenance routines
General
After installation, check with the installer that the unit is
in perfect condition. Request that the installer shows you
the controls and functions so that you are fully aware of
how the installation should work and be maintained.
Operation
Electrical output is controlled externally by the heat pump.
This means that the electrical output is connected and
disconnected by the additional heater.
Venting
Regularly check that there is water in the system. Air can
remain in the system after installation and the radiators
and boiler should be bled again. After bleeding, the pres-
sure must be checked and water topped up if necessary.
Safety valve
The heating system's safety valve must be completely
sealed and not release any water. The safety valve must
be checked regularly, about 4 times a year. Perform checks
as follows:
1. Open the valve.
2. Check that water flows through the valve.
3. Close the valve.
Reset the pressure by filling with water.
Actions in the event of freeze risk
In the event of extreme cold, no part of the heating system
must be switched off, there is a risk of frost damage.
If a part of the heating system is thought to be frozen,
contact the installer.
If the heating system will not be used for an extended
period of time, the water should be drained and steps
taken to ensure that the immersion heater cannot be
started.

Dealing with malfunctions
In the event of a malfunction or disruption to normal operation, first check the points below:
Low room temperature
႑Circuit or main MCB tripped.
႑Possible earth circuit-breaker tripped.
႑Overheat protection 6 has deployed. If the overheat
protection has deployed, the function of the system's
circulation pumps and valves must be checked. Resetting
occurs by pressing the button on the overheat protec-
tion, when the temperature has fallen below 80 °C.
႑Circulation pump stopped.
႑Thermostat on immersion heater (1) set too low.
႑Air in boiler or system.
႑The pressure is to low in the expansion vessel.
႑The load monitor or some external control unit may have
blocked the power output.
NOTE
Work behind panels secured by screws may only be
carried out by a qualified installation engineer.

Dealing with malfunctions

General information for the installer
General
The area of use for ELK 15 is in combination with NIBE
ground source and air/water heat pumps. When the
heating demand is greater than the heat pump's capacity,
the immersion heater connects automatically for supple-
mentary heating. The electrical equipment is adapted to
the heat pump's function.
ELK 15 contains overheat protection and two contactors
to control the two power steps 5 and 10 kW respectively.
For best function the power should be binary controlled,
that is to say 5, 10 and 15 kW.
Time delay is recommended according to the Swedish
Power Association standards when connected power ex-
ceeds 6 kW.
If there is no operating voltage from the heat pump, the
largest power stage can be force controlled via thermostat.
See the wiring diagram.
The products that do not have an internal immersion
heater can use the emergency mode relay for this function.
Ensure that the heating medium circulates through the
electric heater.
Assembly
LEK
NOTE
The thermostat (35) must be adjusted so that the
system's highest permitted temperature is not ex-
ceeded. The adjustment must not be so great that it
limits the power.
The electric heater must be installed upright (see image
above).
Free space of 500 mm is required in front of the heater for
service. If this is not possible, detachable connections must
be used.

General information for the installer

Pipe installation
The pipe installation must be carried out in accordance
with applicable standards.
Circulation pump
A circulation pump must be used to ensure the IJRZ over
the immersion heater. If the heating system valves can
close the circulation completely, the bypass valve must be
installed so that the IJRZ through the electric heater does
not stop. In closed installations an approved safety valve
and pressure expansion vessel must be used.
NOTE
The pipe work must be IJXVKHG before the electric
heater is FRQQHFWHG so that any contaminants GR not
GDPDJH the component parts.

Pipe installation

Electrical installation
ELK 15 must be installed via a circuit breaker with a minim-
um breaking gap of 3 mm.
NOTE
Electrical installation and service must be carried out
under the supervision of a qualified electrician. Elec-
trical installation and wiring must be carried out in
accordance with the stipulations in force.
NOTE
Reset the overheat protection, it may have tripped
during transport.
Power supply
The cable for power supply must be selected for the de-
sired power and connected to terminal block 9.
NOTE
In the event of any servicing all electrical supplies
must be checked and disconnected. The immersion
heater can be supplied with voltage from connected
heat pump.
ELK 158

Electrical installation

Service
Draining
The system is most easily drained by installing a drainage
valve at the lowest point on the pipe installation. Draining
through such a valve leaves a small amount of water in
the electric heater, which must therefore be drained
through the drain connection (71).
NOTE
Switch off the electric heater before emptying.
