1 INTRODUCTION
Congratulations on your purchase of the NORAC UC4+ Spray Height Controller. This system is
manufactured with top quality components and is engineered using the latest technology to
provide operating features and reliability unmatched for years to come.
When properly used the system can provide protection from sprayer boom damage, improve
sprayer efficiency, and ensure chemicals are applied correctly.
Please take the time to read this manual completely before attempting to install the system. A
thorough understanding of this manual will ensure that you receive the maximum benefit from
the system.

All parts supplied are selected specially to fit the sprayer to facilitate a complete installation.
However, NORAC cannot guarantee all parts fit as intended due to the variations of the sprayer
by the manufacturer. Please read this manual in its entirety before attempting installation.
ATTENTION:
When installing the UC4+ Spray Height Control system please be aware that at a point in the
installation your sprayer booms will be inoperative until the installation is complete. Any
installation procedure requiring boom movement will need to be done first. Once the
hydraulics have been disconnected you must complete the electrical installation before the
booms become operative.

3 PARTS LISTS
The parts that come with your UC4+ Sprayer Height Control System are listed in Table 1. The
item number on the left side of this table references each part.

These parts require installation to the tractor unit in accordance to the accompanied
documentation.

4 INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
4.1 F UNCTIONALITY C HECK
Before beginning the install, ensure all manual hydraulic boom functions are operating properly
on the sprayer.
oAll fold functions
oMain lift function
oWing tilt functions (if applicable)
oSlant function
4.2 E XISTING SYSTEM CHECK
oEnsure the boom suspension is configured as a short-pendulum (insert boom pin to
constrain the long-pendulum suspension)
oInspect boom suspension wear-pads for excessive wear
oSet the boom suspension to be critically damped (Figure 3). Adjust the boom springs and
dampers accordingly.
A) Unlock the boom, and push boom tip down approximately 75 cm (30 inches).
B) Hold the boom steady for a moment, and release.
C) Ensure the boom returns to its relaxed state as quickly as possible, with little to no
overshoot.

oAdjust the slant speed of the boom until the full stroke (from full counter-clockwise to
full clockwise) is 6 seconds (Figure 4). This is the time required for the slant cylinder to
travel from fully extended to fully retracted, or vice-versa.

4.3 W ING SENSOR INSTALLATION
1. Assemble the breakaway sensor mounting Brackets (B11) as show in Figure 5.

To assemble the breakaway sensor bracket:
a) Assemble the bolt and nut into the collar.
b) Grease the bottom edge of the collar and the angled tube of the base.
c) Place the collar onto the angled tube of the mounting base.
d) Install the spring between the collar and the upper ring of the base.
e) Insert tube through assembly and tighten the collar.
2. Mount the sensor bracket onto the boom. Refer to the following sections for specific details
on mounting to different styles of booms.
If possible, mount the sensor brackets while the booms are in their folded position
to ensure that they will not interfere with anything when the boom is folded for
transport.

3. The sensor mounting brackets can be installed with the mounting base in front of or behind
the mounting tube (the difference in mounting can be seen in Figure 7 and Figure 8).
When installing the UC4+ sensors (E02), start with the smallest serial number on
the left hand side proceeding to the largest serial number on the right hand side
(Figure 13).
4. Sensor cables should run through the mounting bracket tube and then behind the member the
bracket is mounted onto. Cable-tie the connector in place. The cable must not be allowed to
hang below the boom (Figure 6).

4.3.1 General mounting rules for UC4+ ultrasonic wing sensors:
a) In its lowest position, the sensor mouth must be 9 inches or more from the ground.
b) The bottom of the sensor must be at least 9 inches in front of the spray nozzles.
c) The bottom of the sensor must be at least 9 inches above the spray nozzles.
d) Ensure that there are no obstructions within a 12-inch diameter circle projected directly
below the center of the sensor.
e) The sensor should be approximately vertical at normal operating heights.

4.3.2 Suggested mounting location for wing bracket on HSA boom
Mounting the NORAC UC4 breakaway bracket to the HSA aluminum boom will require the use
of a Rau aluminum boom clamp, as illustrated below.

Using this clamp will also require adjusting the hole width of the NORAC bracket to
accommodate the larger bolts and differences in dimensions between the 2 parts.
For best performance, the sensor should be mounted 1-2m in from the boom tip. Depending on
the size of the boom, this may require putting the sensor on the breakaway bracket.

NOTE:
It may be necessary to create an adapter to mount the
NORAC UC4+ bracket to the Rau HSA boom. This
bracket, when used in conjunction with the Rau HSA
boom clamp, will prevent the boom from rotating
down towards the ground due to the clamp slipping on
the aluminum.

4.3.3 Suggested mounting location for wing bracket on HSS boom
Use the square bracket mounting plate and the included hardware to mount the UC4 bracket to
the HSS boom, as illustrated.

NOTE:
When arranging height sensors, install the serial numbers from lowest to highest, left to
right.

4.4 E LECTRICAL I NSTALLATION
If the UC4+ control panel is already installed, ensure the power switch is turned
OFF for the remainder of the installation (bottom of switch pressed IN). Use caution
when handling the 12 V power line of the sprayer wiring.
For details on mounting the UC4 Control Panel (Item E1) and necessary electrical
connections inside the cab, refer to the UC4-BC-RA1E End-User document.
4.4.1 Rau valve connections
1. Refer to Figure 14.
2. Connect the Rau Valve Drive PCB (C12) to the NORAC harness (Item C11) using
harness C13. Connect all 3 Weatherpack connectors.
3. Plug item C12 into C14, and securely fasten the module to the sprayer with cable-ties.

4. Connect Item C14 to the Rau valve drivers and power connections:
a. Insert the 6-conductor wire into the Rau valve driver enclosure (SHC box) by
removing a plug from an unused hole. Use a strain-relief grommet to protect the
cable and make the entry weatherproof.
b. Disconnect the wires for the left and right tilt valve coils from their respective
terminals within the SHC box. These valves are no longer used after this install.

c. Connect the wires to the Rau drivers (via the screw terminals) as listed below.
Tee the wires in together with the exiting wiring for all boom function
connections.

5. Insert the 2-conductor wire into the power distribution box and connect to power and
ground. It is also possible to connect power and ground within the SHC box.

IMPORTANT:
Be sure the power connection is wired correctly. Damage to the circuit board may result if
the power connection is reversed.

4.5 C OMPLETING THE FACTORY INSTALLATION
1. Test the functionality of the original manufacturer’s boom controls. The NORAC Control
Panel (E01) does not need to be powered up for the original switches to function. Unfold the
booms and raise/lower each boom and main section. Confirm that the cabling/hoses are
agreeable to the entire range of motion. If one or more of these functions do not work,
review the hydraulic and electrical portions of this manual to check for proper installation.
2. Connect the control panel to C11 via cable C10. Connect C10 to power as described in the
UC4+BC+RA1-INSTE document.
3. Unfold the booms and level to 90 cm (or 35 inch) nozzle height. At this point ensure the
UC4+ sensors are reading from an adequate and uniform target, such as gravel or dirt, or
concrete.
4. By using the “Quick Install” feature of the UC4 panel, the system may be configured in
preparation for the End-User. However, a hydraulic “RETUNE” procedure will be required
for optimal performance. This is required to tune the UC4 hydraulic parameters to those of
the End-User tractor hydraulic system.
5. To perform the “Quick Install” procedure, select the RA2 sprayer type. However, rather
than toggling “YES” to select the RA1 type, hold the toggle switch towards “YES” (for
several seconds) until the word “SENSOR

SENSOR” appears on the UC4 controller screen.
6. The UC4 control panel will then prompt the installer to “EXIT CAB AND PUSH

boom, avoid walking near the UC4 sensors as this may result in measurement error.
7. At this point the UC4 panel should display the Main Operating Screen:

indicating the system is ready for the second stage of installation. This will be carried by the
end user (for the reasons as described above in Step 3).

IMPORTANT:
Ensure the “ROLL KP” values are set to a value of 50 for both roll directions. Depending
on the software version, this value may require manual adjustment (using the +/- toggle
switch from the ROLL KP screens. Refer to Figure 16 for details on navigating to the
ROLL KP screens.
