Short Instrucons
M-22x / M-23x / N-381
These short instrucons contain an overview of the most important safety and handling instruc-
ons for installing linear actuators (hereinaer referred to as „posioner“) with the product
numbers specied above (x: any number).
Subject to change. These short instrucons are superseded by any new release. The latest respec-
ve release is available for download on our website.
The acons during installaon, startup, operaon, and maintenance require addional informaon
from the manuals of the posioner and/or the electronics.
Manuals may be tled as follows: „User Manual“, „Technical Note“.
Downloading the manuals from the website
1. Open the website www.pi.ws.
2. Search the website for the product number (e.g., C-663.12) or the product family (e.g., PICMA®
Bender).
3. Click the corresponding product to open the product detail page.
4. Click Downloads.
The manuals are displayed under Documentaon.
5. Click the desired manual and ll out the inquiry form.

Intended Use
The posioner is a laboratory device as dened
by DIN EN 61010-1. It is intended for indoor use
and use in an environment that is free of dirt,
oil, and lubricants.
According to its design, the posioner is inten-
ded for posioning loads at various velocies.
The posioner is not intended for applicaons
in areas where failure would be a considerable
risk for people or the environment.
It is only possible to use the posioner as inten-
ded when completely installed and connected,
and in conjuncon with suitable electronics.
The posioner may only be installed, operated,
maintained, and cleaned by authorized and
appropriately qualied personnel.
Installing
Risk of minor injuries or damage to equipment
from crushing between the pusher and a xed
part or obstacle.
XInstall touch protecon
XMaintain safety distances according to DIN
EN ISO 13857.
XMount the posioner so that the moon of
the pusher is not hindered by objects in the
workspace.
If the posioner is vacuum-compable, aen-
on must be paid to cleanliness.
XTouch the stage only when wearing pow-
der-free gloves.
XIf necessary: Wipe the posioner to clean it.
Incorrect mounng can damage the posioner
and hinder the movement of the pusher.
XPay aenon to the maximum torque for
the mounng screws or nuts (see manual).
XIf the posioner is mounted in a clamping
xture, only use the areas on the housing
that are approved for clamping (see ma-
nual).
A cable break leads to failure of the posioner.
XInstall the posioner so that the cable is
cannot be bent too strongly or crushed
during operaon.
Starng and Operang
Excessively high or wrongly connected opera-
ng voltages can damage the posioner.
XUse compable electronics only.
XPay aenon to the operang voltage ran-
ge of the posioner (see manual).
XPay aenon to the correct pin assignment
(see manual).
Improper seng of the servo control parame-
ters can damage the posioner or impair the
performance of the posioner.
XIf oscillaon occurs, switch the servo mode
of the electronics o immediately or stop
the posioner.
XUse the default parameters only for the
rst startup.
XAdapt the operang parameter sengs
individually (refer to the user manual for
the electronics).
The posioner may move unintenonally when
connecng it to the electronics.
XBefore connecng the posioner, check
whether a macro is dened as the startup
macro in the electronics and if necessary,
cancel the selecon.
Lateral forces acng on the pusher impair the
moon of the pusher and increase wear on the
drive components.
XAvoid lateral forces on the pusher of the
posioner.
High acceleraon can cause considerable wear
and damage the posioner.
XStop moon immediately if an electronics
malfuncon occurs.
XMove to the end of the travel range with
low velocity.

Operaon
Operang the posioner in environments that
increase electrical conducvity could damage
the posioner.
XKeep the posioner free of liquids and
electrically conducve materials (e.g.,
metal dust).
XDo not operate the posioner in air pres-
sure ranges where conducvity of the air is
increased.
XPay aenon to the permissible ambient
condions (see manual).
N-381 only: Applying connuously high voltages
can reduce the lifeme of the posioner.
XDischarge the posioner when it is not
being used (see manual).
XIf possible, limit the maximum operang
voltage during connuous operaon.
Mounng with Grub Screws
1. Bore at least one threaded hole into the
mounng opposite the groove (see manual
for dimensions).
2. Insert the posioner into the mounng.
3. Screw a grub screw into each hole so that it
threads rmly into the groove.
4. Check that the posioner is rmly seated.
Mounng with Mounng Nut
1. Insert the posioner (4) into the mounng
(3).
2. If necessary, put a at washer or spring
washer onto the mounng sha (2).
3. Clamp the posioner rmly with the clam-
ping nut (1).
Mounng with Clamping Shank
1. Prepare a suitable mounng with clamping
xture (2) (refer to the manual for dimen-
sions).
2. Insert the posioner (3) into the clamping
xture.
3. Tighten the mounng screws (1) evenly.
4. Check that the posioner is rmly seated.
NOTICE!
Torques on the pusher can damage the
drive of the posioner.
XAvoid torques on the pusher.
The supplied ps make it possible to realize
dierent mechanical connecons to a load:
1. If necessary (see manual), use an open-end
wrench to x the pusher (2) to the wrench
ats (b).
2. Unscrew the p (1).
3. Screw in the new p by hand.
4. If necessary, remove the open-end wrench
from the pusher.
5. Make sure that the p is xed rmly.
