4 Installaon
4.1 Baery Installaon
The SP-210 is powered by four alkaline baeries. Typical baery life lasts for 10,000 measurements or 10
months. When the baery capacity is crically low, the SP-210 will display a ”LOW BATTERY” warning for 5
seconds and then automacally turn o.
*NOTE*Do not use rechargeable nickel cadmium (NiCad) or lithium baeries.
Replace the baeries to resume operaon of the SP-210 aer the baery warning. The SP-210 will auto-
macally turn on in the measurement mode aer new baeries are installaon.
The SP-210 baery compartment, shown in Figure 1, is on the back side of the instrument. Baeries are
held in place by a cover secured with two Phillips-head screws.
Figure 1. The SP-210 baery compartment
Install baeries using the following steps:
1. Remove the baery compartment cover by loosening the two screws.
2. Remove old baeries and dispose of them properly.
3. Following the posive and negave terminal signs in the compartment boom, snap four new AA
alkaline baeries rmly into the baery holder.
4. Replace the baery compartment cover and ensure that the sealing O-ring is lying at on the baery
holder.
5. Fasten the two screws.
*NOTE*Failure to properly seat the O-ring may result in water damage to the SP-210.

5 Instrument Overview
Figure 2.
5.1 Control Keys
The SP-210 has three control keys, as shown in Figure 2. The le ( ), right ( ), and OK ( ) keys
are used to launch acons indicated on the LCD display directly above the keys. The labels above the keys
indicate the funcon associated with each key and funcons can be changed in dierent operaon modes.
5.2 Main Module On/O
To turn on the SP-210: Press momentarily and release.
To turn o the SP-210: Press and hold for about three seconds. Release when the LCD display
turns o. The SP-210 turns itself o aer 60 seconds without user interacon detected. This is done to
conserve baery life.
*NOTE*This auto-me o seng may be customized by the user as desired through the
uPyxis® Mobile or Desktop App.

6 Measurement
6.1 Bleach Measurement
1. When powered on, the SP-210 will be in the Bleach measurement mode. The sample can be trans-
ferred to the sample cell using a pipee or sample bole, or sample valve.
*NOTE*Special care should be taken when pouring the sample into the cell to avoid
air bubble entrainment, which can interfere with reading accuracy.
WARNING
Sodium hypochlorite soluon is a highly corrosive and dangerous substance, avoid direct contact with
the skin or eyes, in case of contact with sodium hypochlorite soluon, please immediately wash the
contact area with clean water connuously.
2. Before beginning a measurement, use pure water to rinse the sample cell at least 2–3 mes. then ll
the sample cell with pure water and click Zero for background calibraon.
3. Pour out the pure water in the sample cell, rinse the sample cell with the Bleach soluon to rinse the
sample cell at least 2–3 mes, then ll the sample cell with the Bleach soluon to be tested, and click
”Read” to Read the value.
4. The screen interface will display the concentraon of Bleach soluon.
5. Aer the measurement is completed, pour out the Bleach soluon and ush the sample cell with
clean water unl there is no sodium hypochlorite residue.
*NOTE*The me required to reach a stable reading may be slightly longer if the wa-
ter sample temperature is signicantly dierent than the environmental temperature
at which the SP-210 had been equilibrated (stored).
The SP-210 does not need to be turned o between measurements of samples. Rinsing the sample cell
several mes between samples is recommended. Ambient light does not aect the measurement. The
sample cell does not need to be covered during the measurement.
*NOTE*If the screen goes dark, the mer will quickly turn o the SP-210. Pressing any key
will turn the mer back on. The mer is used to extend baery life.
*NOTE*To avoid residue or contaminaon from the previous soluon, please clean the
sample cell at least three mes.
*NOTE*Be sure to clean the sample cell aer each use of the SP-210 and dry it with a clean
paper towel to avoid over force damage.
6.2 Suspended Solids Chromacity Interference
The SP-210 has extra channels to measure sample suspended solids and color which are used to automa-
cally compensate for any interference caused by these contaminants as high as 20–50 mg/L. If the sample
turbidity and color values determined are too high, an error will show. In such a case, the user should
pre-lter the sample for the Bleach measurement within the compensaon capability of the SP-210.

7 Calibraon
7.1 Bleach Calibraon (Three-Point with Zero)
The SP-210 is calibrated using a three-point calibraon, i.e., the zero-point is calibrated with deionized water
rst, and then the slope is calibrated using a concentraon of 1% and 10% sodium hypochlorite standard
soluon.
1. Rinse and ll the sample cell with deionized water.
*NOTE*In case of emergency, you can use ”no sodium hypochlorite” clean sample
water, such as drink water, but please use deionized water to redo the zero calibraon
as soon as possible.
2. Power on the SP-210 by pressing .
3. The SP-210 displays and measures the concentraon of bleach. If deionized water is used, the mea-
sured value will be very low; the value of sodium hypochlorite should be close to zero. A relavely
low non-zero reading (e.g., 0.01 etc.) is not a problem.
4. Press Cal/Sys ( ) to launch the Bleach CALIBRATION screen (Figure 3).
5. Press Zero () to set the zero point.
6. If the calibraon succeeds, a checkmark ( ) and instrucons for the slope calibraon will appear
(Figure 4).
7. Rinse the sample cell three mes with the 1% sodium hypochlorite standard. Fill the sample cell with
the 1% standard.
8. Press Slope (or ) to start the low-point slope calibraon.
9. If the calibraon succeeds, a checkmark ( ) and a ”Calibraon Success” message will appear (Figure
5). Otherwise, a warning message is displayed.
10. Press Connue (or ) to connue to the high-point slope calibraon (Figure 6).
11. Rinse the sample cell three mes with the 10% sodium hypochlorite standard. Fill the sample cell
with the 10% standard.
12. Press Slope (or ) to start the high-point slope calibraon.
13. If the calibraon succeeds, a checkmark ( ) and a ”Calibraon Success” message will appear (Figure
7). Otherwise, a warning message is displayed.
14. Calibraon is now complete. Press Exit () to return to Bleach measurement mode.
*NOTE*Aer calibraon is completed, the SP-210 will not automacally return to
Bleach measurement mode. If you press and hold Exit, the SP-210 will shut down
instead of returning to the measurement mode.
