Overview
TheWinneX5greenmainboardutilizesIntel’ s firstgenerationintegratedgraphics
chipset—Intel®810 WhitneyChipset,providing afullycompatible,high performanceand
cost-effectivePC/ATXplatform.Thenewintegratedtechnologies,togetherwithsoft-
wareconfigurableAC’97 audioand modemsystemgivecustomersanadvanced,
multimediasolutionatanextremelylowprice.Itprovides66MHzand100 MHzsystem
bussupportforalltheIntel®CeleronPPGA370 Processors.100MHzSDRAMsare
supportedup to512MB.It alsoprovidesadvancedfeaturessuchasWake-UpOnLAN,
Wake-UpOnInternal/ExternalModemandKeyboardPasswordPower-onfunctions.
Suspend toRAM,theoptimalimplementationoftheAdvancedConfigurationand Power
Interface(ACPI)specification,makesthePC’ s powerconsumptiondrop tothelowest

FWH(FirmwareHub)Protection
TheBIOSofthe mainboardislocated insidethe FWH.SeverevirusessuchasCIHvirusare
sodangerousthatitmayoverwritetheBIOS.If theBIOShasbeen damaged,the system
willbeunabletoboot. Weprovidebothhardwareand softwaresolution whichprotectsthe
systemBIOSfrombeingattackedbysuchviruses.
Herearetwochoiceswhichimplementsthisfunction:
1.Setthejumper(JAV)asclosed,theBIOScannotbeoverwritten.
2.Setthejumper(JAV)asopen,meanwhileset“FlashWriteProtect”asEnabledin
AWARDBIOSCMOSSetup.Inthisway,the BIOScan notbe overwritten,butDMI
informationcanbeupdated.

BIOSsetting.
SuspendtoRAM
Suspend toRAMisacost-effective,optimalimplementationoftheAdvanced
ConfigurationandPowerInterface(ACPI)1.0specification,whichmakesaPC’s
powerconsumptiondroptothelowestpossiblelevelandenablesquick wakeup.
WhenthesystemisinSuspend-to-RAMstatus,thesystemcontextismaintainedin
systemmemory,thesystemconsumesonlyasmall fractionofthepowerusedfor
fulloperation.Insteadofshuttingdownthe systemtosavepowerwhennotinuse
andthenhavingtorebootlater,Suspend-to-RAMsolutionenablesthesystemto
quicklywakeup,restoring allapplicationsand features,enabling operationinafew
seconds.
Toimplementthisfunction,thefollowingrequirmentsareessential:
1.Powersupplyrequirements:Thecurrentof5VSB line ofthepowersupplyshouldbe
morethan 0.75A.

2.The BIOSoption“ACPIfunction”shouldbeenabled,and“ACPISuspendType”
shouldbesetasS3inAWARDBIOSCMOSsetup.Refertopage 28fordetailed
information.
3.AnACPI-enabledoperating systemsuchasWindows98 orWindows2000 family
isneeded.Inordertoinstall ACPI-enabledWindows98 operating system,the
setupcommand shouldbe typedasshownbelow:

Forthe operatingsystemalreadyinstalled,enableACPIfunctionthrough the
Microsoft HCT(HardwareCompatibilityTest)installationprocess.
4.Twoways toenterSuspend-to-RAMstatus:
lUnderWindows98/Windows2000,clickingStart—Shutdown—Standby
enablesthe systemtoenterSuspend-to-RAMstatus.
lUnderWindows98/Windows2000,fromPowerManagementPropertiesin
ControlPanel,setthe continuousidletimebeforesuspend,the systemwill
enterSuspend-to-RAMstatuswhen timeout.
Thesamewaysusedtopowerupthesystemcanbeused towakeupthesystem
fromSuspend-to-RAMstatus.Forexample,pushingthepowerbutton,throughthe
Wake-UpOnLAN,Wake-UpOnInternal/ExternalModemfunctionorRTCAlarm.If
the keyboardpasswordpower-onfunction isenabled,the keyboardpasswordshould
be usedtowakeup thesysteminsteadofpushingthe powerbutton.

Accordingtothe previousATA/IDEharddrivedatatransferprotocol,the signaling
waytosenddatawasinsynchronousstrobe modebyusingthe risingedgeofthe
strobesignal.TheUltraATA/33protocoldoublesthe bursttransferratefrom16.6MB/
sto33.3MB/s,byusingboththerisingand falling edgesofthestrobesignal,this
timeUltraATA/66doublestheUltraATAbursttransferrateonceagain(from33.3MB/
sto66.6MB/s)byreducing setuptimesandincreasingthe strobe rate.The faster
strobe rateincreasesEMI,whichcannotbe eliminated bythe standard40-pincable
usedbyATAandUltraATA.ToeliminatethisincreaseinEMI,anew40-pin,80-
conductorcableisneeded.Thiscableadds40additionalgroundlinesbetweeneach
oftheoriginal40groundandsignallines.The additional40lineshelpshieldthe
signalfromEMI,reducecrosstalkandimprovesignalintegrity.

UltraATA/33introducedCRC (CyclicalRedundancyCheck),anewfeatureofIDE
thatprovidesdataintegrityandreliability.UltraATA/66 usesthesameprocess.The
CRCvalueiscalculated byboththehostandtheharddrive.Afterthehost-request
dataissent,thehostsendsitsCRC totheharddrive,andtheharddrivecompares
ittoitsownCRC value.Iftheharddrivereportserrorstothehost,then thehost
retriesthecommandcontaining theCRCerror.
UltraATA/66 technologyincreasesbothperformanceand dateintegrity.However
therearebasicallyfiverequirementsforyoursystemtoruninUltraATA/66 mode:
1.The systemboardmustcontainaspecialUltraATA/66 detectcircuit,suchas
WinneX5mainboard.
2.ThesystemBIOSmustalsosupportUltraATA/66.
3.The operatingsystemmustbe capableofDMAtransfers.Win95 (OSR2)and
Win98 arecapable.
4.AcapableUltraATA/66 ,40-pin,80-conductorcableisrequired.
5.UltraATA/66compatibleIDEdevicesuchasaharddriveorCD-ROMdrive.

Besuretoconnectthepowersupplyplug tothisconnectorinitsproperorientation.The
powerswitch(POWER)shouldbeconnectedtoamomentaryswitch.Whenpowering
upyoursystem,firstturnon themechanicalswitchofthe powersupply(ifoneispro-
vided),then pushoncethe powerswitch.When poweringoff the system,youneedn’t

Wake-UpOnLAN(WOL)

beenclosedonce,thesystemwill recordthestatusand indicatethechassishasbeen
opened.You canreceivethisinformationfromQDIManageEasy software.

The AMRInterfaceConnectoristheinterfacebetweenthe mainboardandthe Audio/
ModemRisercard.The connectorprovidesallnecessarysignalswhichsupports
severaldifferentconfigurationsofaudioandmodeminthe system,suchasaudioand
modemon theRiser,audioonthemainboardandmodemon theRiser,ornoaudio
withmodemontheRiser.WinneX5mainboardprovidesyouwithaudioonboardsolution,
onboardaudiocanbeenabled/disabled.EitherAMR(Audio/ModemRiser) cardorMR

button’ s power-onfunctionhasbeendisabled.

TheBIOSofthemainboardisinsidetheFWH.IfthejumperJAVissetasclosed,youwill
beunabletoflashtheBIOStothemainboard.Howeverinthisstatus,thesystemBIOSis
protectedfrombeingattackedbyseriousvirussuchasCIHvirus.
SettingthejumperJAVasopen,meanwhiledisablingthe“FlashWriteProtect”itemin
AWARD BIOSCMOSSetup,allowsyoutoflashtheBIOStotheflashROMinFWH.
The DMI(DesktopManagementInterface)systeminformationsuchastheCPUtype/
speed,memorysize,and expansioncardswillbedetectedbytheonboardBIOSand
storedinthe flashROMinFWH.Wheneverthesystemhardwareconfiguration ischanged,
DMIinformation willbe updated automatically.However,settingjumperJAVasclosed
makesflashingBIOSandupdatingDMIinformation impossible.Therefore,setJAVas
open whenchangingthesystemhardwareconfiguration,ortheerrormessage“Un-
knownFlashType”will bedisplayedonthescreen,and DMIinformationupdatewillfail
whileupdating DMI.
