1 Product Description
The RG-PF2920U-4GT1MS-P is the simplified optical Ethernet (SOE) switch released by Ruijie Networks for
all-optical network scenarios.
It can be used with the Power over Fiber (PoF) switch to realize remote power supply, dual-network deployment,
energy saving, and flexible installation. It is also designed with a built-in PD power supply, which is stable and
reliable and suitable for indoor scenarios.
With Ruijie's modular OS, the RG-PF2920U-4GT1MS-P is fit for the SOE solution, and implements lifecycle
management, security control, plug and play, and intelligent O&M through software-defined networking (SDN).

1.4 Heat Dissipation
The RG-PF2920U-4GT1MS-P adopts natural heat dissipation to ensure that it works properly in a specified
environment. Dust the device every three months to avoid blocking ventilation openings on the housing.

2 Preparing for Installation
2.1 Safety Precautions
Warning
To avoid personal injury and device damage, carefully read the safety precautions before you install the
RG-PF2920U-4GT1MS-P.
The following safety precautions may not cover all possible dangers.
2.1.1 Mounting
Keep the chassis clean and dust-free.
Do not place the device in a walking area.
During installation and maintenance, do not wear loose clothes, ornaments, or any other things that may be
hooked by the chassis.
Cut off all the power supplies and unplug all power cords before handling the switch.
2.1.2 Handling
Avoid handling the device frequently.
Keep balance and prevent personal injuries when handling the device.
Cut off all the power supplies and unplug all power cords before moving or handling the switch. Avoid scalds
because the housing surface is hot.
2.1.3 Electricity
Observe local regulations and specifications during electric operations. Only qualified personnel can perform
such operations.
Before installing the device, check whether there are hidden risks in the operating environment of the device.
For example, check whether the power socket is grounded and whether the ground is wet.
Determine the location of the indoor emergency power supply switch before installing the device. When an
accident occurs, immediately cut off all power supplies.
Do not maintain the device by yourself when the device is powered on.
Make sure that the device is powered off when you cut off the power supply.
Do not place the device in a wet position, and keep the device away from liquid.
Warning
Improper or incorrect electric operations may cause a fire, electric shock, and other accidents, and lead
to severe and fatal personal injury and device damage.
Direct or indirect contact through wet objects with high voltage or mains power supply may be fatal.
If a power supply system is equipped with a leakage protector (also referred to as leakage current switch
or breaker), the rated leakage action current of each leakage protector must be twice greater than the
maximum leakage current of all the power supplies in the system. For example, if the system is equipped
with 16 identical power modules and the leakage current of each power module is equal to or less than

3.5 mA, the leakage current of the system totals 56 mA. Aleakage protector with 30 mArated action
current supports less than five power modules (that is, action current of the leakage protector/2/maximum
leakage current of each power supply = 30/2/3.5). In other words, the leakage protector with 30 mA rated
action current supports no more than four power modules. In this case, the 16 power modules in the
system require at least four leakage protectors with 30 mA rated action current and each leakage
protector supports four power modules. If power modules in the system differ in models, the rated
leakage action current of each leakage protector divided by two is greater than the sum of maximum
leakage currents of all the power modules. The rated leakage non-action current of a leakage protector
should be 50% of the leakage action current. The leakage protector with 30 mA rated leakage action
current is used as an example. The rated leakage non-action current should be 15 mA. When the
leakage current falls below 15 mA, the protector should not act. Otherwise, misoperation may easily
occur due to high sensitivity. In this case, the leakage protector trips, devices are powered off, and
services are interrupted.
To guarantee personal safety, the rated leakage action current of each leakage protector in the system
must be less than or equal to 30 mA (human body safety current is 30 mA). When twice of the total
leakage current of the system is greater than 30 mA, the system must be equipped with two or more
leakage protectors.
For the leakage current value of each device model, see the technical specifications in Chapter 1 Product
Description.
2.1.4 ESD
To prevent damage caused by static electricity, pay attention to the following points:
Ensure that the grounding screw on the side panel of the device is grounded.
Keep the indoor installation environment clean and dust-free.
Keep the indoor humidity within a certain range.
2.1.5 Laser
The RG-PF2920U-4GT1MS-P supports various types of optical transceivers available in the market, and these
optical transceivers are Class I laser products. Improper use of an optical transceiver may cause damage.
Therefore, pay attention to the following:
When a fiber transceiver works, ensure that the port has been connected with a fiber or covered by a dust cap
to keep out dust and prevent it from burning your eyes.
When an optical transceiver is working, do not look into its port after removing the optical fiber. Otherwise, your
eyes may be hurt.
Warning
Do not approach or look into any optical port under any circumstances. This may cause permanent damage to
your eyes.
2.1.6 Storage
To ensure proper working of the device, store the device in an environment based on the storage temperature or
humidity requirements in specifications.

Caution
If the device has been powered off for more than 18 months, power on the device and run it for consecutive 24
hours to activate the device.
2.2 Installation Site Requirements
The installation site must meet the following requirements to ensure the normal operation and prolonged service
life of the device.
2.2.1 Ventilation
For the RG-PF2920U-4GT1MS-P, maintain sufficient clearance on both sides of the chassis and above the
chassis for air circulation. After various cables are connected, bind the cables or place them in the cable
management bracket to avoid blocking air inlets. Dust the device every three months to avoid blocking the
ventilation openings on the housing.
The RG-PF2920U-4GT1MS-P uses natural heat dissipation, and the heat is primarily dissipated through the
housing. The surface temperature of the device is high. It is crucial to install the device in a restricted-access
area that offers sufficient ventilation, only accessible to authorized personnel such as maintenance staff,
professionals, or relevant technical personnel.
2.2.2 Temperature and Humidity
To ensure the normal operation and service life of the switch, maintain an appropriate temperature and humidity
in the environment where the switch is used.
Prolonged exposure of the switch to a high relative humidity environment can result in compromised insulation
of the insulating material, potentially leading to electrical leakage. Additionally, the mechanical properties of
materials may undergo alterations, and there is an increased risk of corrosion for metal components.
Extended storage of the switch in a low relative humidity environment can result in the shrinkage of insulating
strips, leading to the loosening of fastening screws. Additionally, the occurrence of static electricity becomes
more likely, which poses a risk of damaging internal circuits of the switch.
Extended exposure of the switch to a high ambient temperature environment can result in amplified damage.
The elevated temperature accelerates the aging process of insulating materials, significantly diminishing the
performance and reliability of the switch while severely impacting its service life.

Note
The ambient temperature and humidity of the switch are measured at a point located 1.5 m (59.06 in.) above
the floor and 0.4 m (15.75 in.) before the switch rack, assuming there are no protective plates installed in front
or at the back of the rack.
2.2.3 Cleanliness
Dust poses a major threat to the device. The indoor dust takes on a positive or negative static electric charge
when falling on the switch, causing poor contact of the metallic joint. Such electrostatic adhesion may occur
more easily when the relative humidity is low, affecting the service life of the switch and causing communication
faults.

Apart from dust, the salt, acid, and sulfide in the air of the equipment room must meet strict requirements. These
harmful substances will acceleratemetal corrosion and component aging. Therefore, the equipment room should
be properly protected against the intrusion of harmful gases, such as sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen
dioxide, and chlorine gas.

The average value refers to the average value of harmful gases measured in one week. The maximum value is
the upper limit of the harmful gas measured in one week for up to 30 minutes every day.
2.2.4 Anti-interference
The switch is susceptible to external interference by capacitive coupling, inductive coupling, electromagnetic
waves, common impedance (ground) coupling, or conduction over power lines, signal lines, and output lines.
Pay attention to the following points:
The switch should be located far away from the high-power radio launch pads, radar launch pads, and high-

frequency large-current devices.
Use electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding such as shielded interface cables to minimize interference
when necessary.
Route interface cables only indoors to prevent signal ports from being damaged by overvoltage or overcurrent
caused by lightning strikes.
2.2.5 Grounding
A proper grounding system is the basis for stable and reliable device running. It is indispensable for preventing
lightning strikes and interference. Carefully check grounding conditions of the installation site against grounding
specifications, and ground the device properly based on the actual situation.
Warning
Ensuring proper grounding of the switch is crucial to effectively protect against lightning and prevent
interference. Therefore, it is imperative for users to correctly ground the switches.
Safety Grounding
Ensure that the rack and power distribution device are securely grounded when the switch uses the AC
power supply. Otherwise, electric shock may occur when the insulation resistance between the power supply
inside the switch and the chassis becomes small.
Caution
The building should provide a protective ground connection to ensure that the device is connected to a
protective earth.
The O&M personnel should check whether the DC socket is reliably connected to the protective ground
of the building. If not, the O&M personnel should use a protective earth conductor from the DC outlet
protective earth terminal to the building protective earth.
The power socket should be installed near the device and easily accessible.
During device installation, ensure that the grounding connection is the first to be established and the last
to be disconnected.
The cross-sectional area of the protective ground cable should be at least 0.75 mm2(18 AWG).
Lightning Grounding
The lightning protection system of facilities is standalone, and is composed of a lightning rod, a down
conductor, and a connector connected to the grounding system. The grounding system is usually used for
power reference grounding and safe grounding of the rack. Lightning grounding is required only for facilities
and is not required for the switch.
EMC Grounding
Grounding required for electromagnetic compatibility includes shielded grounding, filter grounding, noise and
interference suppression, and level reference, which contribute to the overall grounding requirements. The
resistance of the grounding cable should be smaller than 1 ohm. The RG-PF2920U-4GT1MS-P provides one
grounding stud on the side panel, as shown in Figure 2-1.

2.2.6 EMI
Both external and internal EMI sources have an impact on the device or application system through mechanisms
such as capacitive coupling, inductive coupling, or electromagnetic waves.
EMI can arise through radiation or conduction, depending on the transmission path.
When energy, typically in the form of radio waves, emitted by one component reaches a sensitive component
through space, it is referred to as radiated interference. The source of interference can be a part of the affected
system or a completely electrically isolated unit. Conducted interference occurs when interference is transferred
from one unit to another through cables, which are typically electromagnetic wires or signal cables connecting
the source and the sensor. Conducted interference often disrupts the power supply of the device, but this can
be mitigated by a filter. Radiated interference may affect any signal path in the device, and is difficult to shield
against. EMI requirements are as follows:
Take interference prevention measures for the power supply system.
Ensure that the grounding device of the switch is located at a considerable distance from grounding and lightning
grounding devices of the power device.
Keep the switch far away from high-power radio transmitters, radar launch pads, and high-frequency large-
current devices.
Employ electromagnetic shielding measures when necessary.

3 Installing the Switch
Caution
Before reading Chapter 3 Installing the Switch, ensure that you have read Chapter 2 Preparing for
Installation carefully.
Verify that requirements described in Chapter 2 Preparing for Installation have been met.
3.1 Installation Procedure
3.2 Before You Begin
Before installation, ensure that the following requirements are met:
The installation environment meets heat dissipation requirements.
The installation environment meets temperature and humidity requirements.
The power supply and required current are available at the installation site.
Ethernet cables have been deployed at the installation site.
3.3 Mounting the RG-PF2920U-4GT1MS-P
Pay attention to the following points:
Install the switch correctly
Connect to system ground
Connect the power supply
Connect cables
Bundle up cables

Connect the power cords of different colors to the corresponding DC cables.
Ensure that the connector of the power cord is properly seated in the power port of the switch.
Do not place anything on the top of the RG-PF2920U-4GT1MS-P.
Maintain sufficient clearance around the device to ensure good air circulation. Do not stack the device.
Keep the RG-PF2920U-4GT1MS-P away from high-power radio launch pads, radar launch pads, and high-
frequency large-current devices. Take electromagnetic shielding measures to minimize interference when
necessary, for example, use shielded interface cables.
Manage Ethernet cables with a distance of 100 m (328.08 ft.) indoors. Take surge protection measures if they
need to be routed outdoors.
3.3.1 Mounting the Switch in a Rack
The RG-PF2920U-4GT1MS-P is designed to meet the standard size specified by EIA and can be conveniently
installed in racks. It is crucial to maintain adequate space around the switch to allow for effective heat dissipation.
The installation requirements are as follows:
If there are hot devices nearby, the required spacing should be at least 90 mm (3.54 in., 2 RU). However, if the
ambient temperature is less than or equal to 35°C (95°F), the required spacing can be reduced to at least 44.45
mm (1.75 in., 1 RU).
If the heat dissipation conditions between two adjacent devices are favorable, the required spacing should be at
least 44.45 mm (1.75 in., 1 RU).

The installation process is as follows:
(1) Take screws out of the package. Attach one end of the mounting brackets to the switch by using screws.

3.3.2 Mounting the Switch Under the Desktop
The RG-PF2920U-4GT1MS-P can be installed under the desktop. Maintain sufficient clearance around the
device for heat dissipation. The installation requirements are as follows:
The space under the desktop must be well-ventilated.
No obstacle is allowed within 90 mm (3.54 in.) below the switch that is installed under the desktop.
The installation process is as follows:
(1) Rotate the brackets by 90 degrees and secure the brackets to the switch by using the screws.
