1 Product Introduction
The RG-SF2920U series switches are simplistic optical switches released by Ruijie Networks for all-optical network
scenarios.
The switches adopt a new hardware architecture design to implement dual-network deployment on one switch, reduce
noise, save energy, and support flexible installation. They are equipped with built-in power supplies and feature reliability
and stability. They are suitable for indoor scenarios.
With Ruijie's modular OS, the RG-SF2920Useries switches support the simplistic optical Ethernet solution, and implement
lifecycle management, security control, plug and play, and intelligent O&M through software-defined networking (SDN).

2 Preparations Before Installation
2.1 Safety Precautions
To avoid personal injuryand device damage, carefully read the safety precautions before you install the RG-SF2920U
series switches.
The following safety precautions may not cover all possible dangers.
2.1.1 Installation Safety
1) Keep the chassis clean, free from any dust.
2) Do not place the device in walking areas.
3) During the installation and maintenance, do not wear loose clothes, ornaments, or any other things that may be
hooked by the device.
4) Cut off all the power supplies and unplug all power cords before placing the device in a rack or removing the device
from a rack.
2.1.2 Handling Safety
1) Do not move the device frequently.
2) Keep balance and prevent personal injuries when handling the switch.
3) Cut off all the power supplies and unplug all power cords before moving or handling the switch. Avoid scalds because
the housing surface is hot.
2.1.3 Electric Safety
1) Observe local regulations and specifications during electric operations. Only personnel with relevant qualifications
can perform such operations.
2) Before installing the device, check whether there are hidden risks in the operating environment of the device. For
example, check whether the power socket is grounded and whether the ground is wet.
3) Be sure to know the location of the indoor emergency power supply switch before installing the device. When an
accident occurs, immediately cut off all power supplies.
4) Do not maintain the device by yourself when the device is powered on.
5) Make sure that the device is powered off when you cut off the power supply.
6) Do not place the switch in a wet position, and keep the switch away from liquid.
Improper or incorrect electric operations may cause a fire, electric shock, and other accidents, and lead to severe
and fatal personal injury and device damage.
Direct or indirect contact with high voltage or mains power supply through wet objects may cause fatal dangers.

If a power supply system is equipped with a leakage protector (also referred to as leakage current switch or leakage
current breaker), the rated leakage action current of each leakage protector must be greater than twice the theoretical
maximum leakage current of all the power supplies in the system. For example, if a system is equipped with 16
identical power supplies and the leakage current of each power supply is equal to or less than 3.5 mA, the leakage
current of the system totals 56 mA. A leakage protector with 30 mA rated action current supports less than five power
supplies (that is, Action current of the leakage protector/2/Maximum leakage current of each power supply = 30/2/3.5
≈ 4.28). In other words, the leakage protector with 30 mA rated action current supports no more than four power
supplies. In this case, the 16 power supplies in the system require at least four leakage protectors with 30 mA rated
action current and each leakage protector supports four power supplies. If power supplies in a system differ in models,
the rated leakage action current of each leakage protector divided by two is greaterthan the sum of maximum leakage
currents of all the power supplies. The rated leakage non-action current of a leakage protector shall be 50% of the
leakage action current. Take a leakage protector with 30 mA rated leakage action current as an example. The rated
leakage non-action current shall be 15 mA. When the leakage current is below 15 mA, the protector shall not act.
Otherwise, misoperation may easily occur due to high sensitivity and thus the leakage protector trips, devices are
powered off, and services are interrupted.
To guarantee personal safety, the rated leakage action current of each leakage protector in the system must be equal
to or less than 30 mA (human body safety current is 30 mA). When twice of the total leakage current of the system is
greater than 30 mA, the system must be equipped with two or more leakage protectors.
For the leakage current value of each product model, see the device model specifications in Chapter 1.
2.1.4 Electrostatic Discharge Safety
To prevent damage caused by static electricity, you must pay attention to the following:
1) Ensure that the grounding screw on the back panel of the device is grounded. Ensure that the AC power socket is a
single-phase three-core power socket with protective earthing conductors (PE).
2) Keep the indoor installation environment clean and free of dust.
3) Keep the indoor humidity within a certain range.
2.1.5 Laser Safety
The RG-SF2920U series switches support various types of SFP modules available in the market, and these SFP modules
are Class I laser products. Improper use of an SFP module may cause damage. Therefore, pay attention to the following
points when using an SFP module:

When a fiber transceiver works, ensure that the port has been connected with a fiber or covered by a dust cap to
keep out dust and prevent it from burning your eyes.
When an SFP module is used on the device, do not look into the transceiver interface of the SFP module after
removing the optical fiber. Otherwise, your eyes may be hurt.
Do not approach or stare at any optical port under any circumstances, as this may cause permanent damage to your
eyes.

2.2 Installation Environment Requirements
To ensure the normal operation and prolonged service life of the device, the installation site must meet the following
requirements.
2.2.1 Ventilation and Cooling Requirements
For RG-SF2920U series switches, maintain sufficient space on both sides of the chassis and around the back panel for air
circulation and ventilation. After various cables are connected, bind the cables or place them in the cable management
bracket to avoid blocking air inlets. Dust the device every three months to avoid blocking the ventilation openings on the
housing. RG-SF2920U-8GT1MS-P, RG-SF2920U-4GT1MS-P, and RG-SF2920U-8GT1MS are fanless products using
natural heat dissipation. The heat of the devices is dissipated through the chassis housing. Some areas of the housing are
hot. Do not touch the areas (personnel other than maintenance personnel, professionals, or technicians are not allowed to
touch the areas). You are advised to install the devices in a well-ventilated area.
2.2.2 Temperature and Humidity Requirements
To ensure the normal operation and service life of the switch, maintain an appropriate temperature and humidity in the
environment where the switch is used.
(1) If a switch is kept in an environment with high relative humidity for long, the insulating material may have poor
insulation or even leak electricity, the mechanical properties of materials are prone to change, and metal components
are prone to corrosion.
(2) If a switch is kept in an environment with low relative humidity for long, the insulating strips will shrink and cause
loosening of fastening screws. In addition, static electricity is prone to occur and damages the internal circuits of the
switch.
(3) If a switch is kept in an environment with high ambient temperature for long, the damage will be greater. The high
temperature will accelerate the aging process of insulating materials, greatly reducing the performance and reliability
of the switch, and seriously affecting the service life of the switch.
The table below lists the ambient temperature and humidity requirements of the RG-SF2920U series switches.

Requirements for ambient temperature and humidity of sampling points:
The ambient temperature and humidity of the switch are measured at the point that is 1.5 m above the floor and 0.4 m
before the switch rack when there is no protective plate in front or at the back of the rack.
2.2.3 Cleanliness Requirements
Dust poses a major threat to the switch. Dust accumulated on the device will cause electrostatic adsorption and result in
poor contact at metal contacts. Especially, when the indoor relative humidity is low, accumulated dust is more apt to cause
electrostatic adsorption, which will not only shorten the service life but also cause communication failures. The following
table describes the requirements for the dust content and granularity in the equipment room.

Apart from dust, the salt, acid, and sulfide in the air in the equipment room must meet strict requirements. These harmful
substances will accelerate metal corrosion and component aging. Therefore, the equipment room should be properly
protected against the intrusion of harmful gases, such as sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen dioxide, and chlorine
gas. The following table lists limit values for harmful gases.

Average refers to the average value of harmful gases measured in one week. Maximum refers to the upper limit of a
harmful gas measured in one week, and the maximum value can last up to 30 minutes every day.
2.2.4 Anti-interference Requirements
The switch is susceptible to external interference by capacitive coupling, inductive coupling, electromagnetic waves,
common impedance (ground) coupling, or conduction over power lines, signal lines and output lines. Note that:
1. In a TN earthing system, use a single-phase three-core power socket that has protective earthing conductors (PE)
to allow the filter circuit in the device to eliminate interference from the power grid.
2. The switch should be located far away from the large power radio launch pads, radar launch pads, and high-
frequency large-current devices.
3. Use EMI shielding such as shielded interface cables to minimize interference when necessary.
4. Route interface cables only indoors to prevent signal ports from getting damaged by overvoltage or overcurrent
caused by lightning strikes.
2.2.5 Grounding Requirements
A proper grounding system is the basis for stable and reliable running of the RG-SF2920U series switches and is
indispensable for preventing lightning strikes and interference. Carefully check the grounding conditions at the installation
site according to the grounding specifications, and complete grounding properly based on the actual situation.
Effective grounding of the switches is an important guarantee for lightning protection and interference prevention.
Therefore, users must properly ground the switches.
Safe Grounding
Ensure that the switch is securely grounded using a yellow/green grounding cable when the switch uses the AC power
supply. Otherwise, electric shock may occur when the insulation resistance between the power supply inside the switch
and the chassis becomes small.
The building should provide a protective ground connection to ensure that the device is connected to the protection
ground.

Installation and maintenance personnel should check whether the AC socket is reliably connected to the protection
ground of the building. If not, installation and maintenance personnel should use a protective ground cable to connect
the protection grounding lug of the AC socket to the protection ground of the building.
The power socket should be installed in an easily operable position near the device.
Power cords should be connected to a grounded output socket.
During the device installation, be sure to connect the ground cable first and disconnect it last.
The cross-sectional area of the protective ground cable should be at least 0.75 mm2 (18 AWG).
Install the device by using 3-pin power cords, with a minimum cross-sectional area of 0.75 square millimeters or
18AWG per pin.
Lightning Grounding
The lightning protection system of facilities is an independent system composed of a lightning rod, a downlead conductor,
and a connector connected to the grounding system. The grounding system is usually used for power reference grounding
and safe grounding of the cabinet. Lightning discharge grounding is required only for facilities and is not required for the
device.
EMC Grounding
Grounding required for electromagnetic compatibility includes shielded grounding, filter grounding, noise and interference
suppression, and level reference, which contribute to the overall grounding requirements. The resistance of the ground
cable should be smaller than 1 ohm, Each of the RG-SF2920U series switches provides one grounding connector on the
back panel, as shown in Figure 2-1.

2.2.6 Lightning Protection Requirements
When an AC power cord is introduced from outdoors and directly connected to the power port of the switch, the AC power
port must be connected to an external lightning resistance socket to protect the switch against lightning strokes. The
lightning resistance socket is used as follows: Connect the mains AC power cable to the lightning resistance socket and
then connect the switch to the lightning resistance socket. This, to some extent, prevents the current of high-voltage
lightning from directly passing through the switch along the mains cable.
Lightning resistance sockets are purchased by customers as required.

2.2.7 EMI Requirements
All electromagnetic interference (EMI) sources, either from outside or inside of the device or application system, affect the
device by capacitive coupling, inductive coupling, or electromagnetic waves.
EMI occurs due to electromagnetic radiation or conduction, depending on the transmission path.
When the energy, often RF energy, from a component arrives at a sensitive component via the space, the energy is known
as radiated interference. The interference source can be both a part of the interfered system and a completely electrically
isolated unit. Conducted interference occurs when interference is transferred from one unit to another unit through cables,
which are usually electromagnetic wires or signal cables connected between the source and the victim. Conducted
interference often affects the power supply of devices, but can be controlled by a filter. Radiated interference may affect
any signal path in the devices, and is difficult to shield. EMI requirements are as follows:
1. Take interference prevention measures for the power supply system.
2. Keep the grounding device of the switch far away from the grounding device and lightning grounding device of the
power equipment.
3. Keep the switch far away from high-power radio transmitters, radar launch pads, and high-frequency large-current
devices.
4. Take electromagnetic shielding measures when necessary.
