1 Automation Task
1.1 Introduction
The application is especially tailored for the mobile panel 277F IWLAN. However,
the functionality can also be used for the Mobile Panel 277 IWLAN or for devices
that are displayed through the clients list of an access point.
The application is based on the “Configuration and Use of the Mobile Panel 277F
IWLAN” application description (link). This is where the individual configuration
steps for creating a Mobile Panel 277F IWLAN project have already been
described.
The aim of this application is to read the clients list from an access point, to detect
with what access point the mobile panel is connected.
Notes Whenever the mobile panel is mentioned in this document it relates to the Mobile
Panel 277F IWLAN V2.
Whenever the standard configuration for the mobile panel is discussed, it always
relates to the configuration from the
“Configuration and Use of the Mobile Panel 277F IWLAN” which you can download
under the following entry ID 25702331.
1.2 Overview of the automation task
The figure below provides an overview of the automation task.
The figure shows a part of the plant with various stations. Each station is assigned
an access point. The individual stations can be operated and monitored through
several Mobile Panel 277F IWLAN.

Description of the automation task
A large plant consists of three stations via which the packets are transported on
conveyor belts.
Each station has its own access point.
Through one or several mobile panels the individual stations
can be operated and monitored.
Smooth and secure operation of the individual stations through the mobile panels
has to be guaranteed.
The control program is to evaluate with which
access point the mobile panel is currently connected.

This application does not include a description of the SIMATIC WinCC flexible
engineering tool.
It only describes the settings of the used hardware and software components
that are necessary for the application.
Basic knowledge of the above-listed topics is assumed. For detailed information,
please refer to the associated manuals.
The application comes with a standard configuration for the mobile panel.
The “standard configuration” includes a minimum configuration. This enables you
to integrate the mobile panel into a secure IWLAN connection.
The standard configuration does not include an F program to evaluate the safety-
related functions, for example, the evaluation of the emergency stop button on the
mobile panel. If you need a sample configuration regarding this issue, please look
at the application configuration of the
Mobile Panel 277F IWLAN V2.
Required knowledge
Basic knowledge of the “Configuration and Use of the Mobile Panel 277F IWLAN”
application description is assumed.
2.2 Description of the core functionality
The core of this application is the evaluation of the “Clients list” of one or several
access points.
The screen below shows the “web interface” of “SCALANCE W788-2RR”. Under
the “Information > Clients list” parameter, all “Associated Stations” are listed. Each
“MAC address” of the connected device is shown.

The SCALANCE W788-2RR (access point) provides “MIB variables” into which the
system writes the current MAC addresses.
In this application these “MIB variables” are read out and evaluated using STEP 7
blocks.
This is how it can be determined with what access point the mobile panel is
connected.
The blocks used need an Ethernet CP for the evaluation, irrespective of whether
the used CPU has an Ethernet interface.
What can the application perform?
The program example included contains
a STEP 7 program to evaluate the “Clients list” of two
access points
a “standard configuration” for the mobile panel
MIB list of the SCALANCE W788-2RR
You can use the program as template for your applications.
In the further course of this documentation there is special emphasis on the STEP
7 program.
What must or can I do as a user?
The application program is especially tailored for the Mobile Panel 277F IWLAN
V2. However, you can adjust the program individually for the device used by you.
Especially the STEP 7 program is “device-independent”.
Through the structure of the blocks used and the variables used, the program can
be quickly expanded and adjusted to your application.
To read out the “MIB variables” a multitude of software offers (partly free of charge)
is available. You have to determine yourself what MIB browser you use for reading
out the “MIB variables”. In this application the
ireasoning MIB browser by was used.
The individual terms such as, e.g. “MIB variables” are discussed in more detail in
chapter 3 “Basics”.

The program always reads the first 10
entries of the “clients list”, starting from
the access point – irrespective of
whether a node was detected or not.

The sample project included contains a STEP 7 program and two WinCC flexible
projects integrated in STEP 7.
As operator panel a “Mobile Panel 277F IWLAN V2” and a
“Mobile Panel 277F IWLAN V2 (RFID)” is used.
2.4.1 STEP 7 configuration
For the application a CPU 319F-3PN/DP was used (additional info can be found
under the following link).
A list of blocks follows that are required for the evaluation of the “clients list” from
the access point.
All other blocks correspond to the standard configuration of the mobile panel.
Note The name of the blocks can be adjusted as desired.
(This does not apply to the names of the STEP 7 function blocks)

2.4.2 WinCC flexible configuration
A Mobile Panel 277F IWLAN V2 and a
Mobile Panel 277F IWLAN V2 (RFID) was used for the application. The
configuration is based on the “standard configuration” for the mobile panel.
Both operator panels have the same structure.

There are two graphics within the screen. The graphic shows with what access
point the mobile panel is connected. In addition, a text is displayed that shows
when the mobile panel is connected with an access point.
In the bottom part of the screen there are two buttons through which you can
switch the interface language and with which you can stop the runtime of the
mobile panel.

The information below gives you a short insight to the terms used in this document.
It was a deliberate decision only to describe basic information that is required for
understanding the application.
Further information to the individual issues can be found in the appropriate
technical literature.
3.1 MIB browser
What is a MIB browser?
MIB browsers are “programs” for comfortable diagnostics and monitoring of SNMP
capable devices. There are a number of MIB browsers for all distributing operating
systems.
Some of these MIB browsers are free of charge others are licensed models which
are subject to charges.
MIB browsers are normally delivered with extensive libraries which comprise the
profiles of SNMP variables (MIB variables) of a number of devices and
manufacturers. Thus the user can establish a connection to a network node and
start to have the values of the individual MIB variables, their OIDs and their
descriptions displayed.
If the SNMP variables of a certain device are not included in the delivery scope of
the MIB browser library, appropriate profiles can be downloaded from the web
pages of the provider or directly from the device (Link).
3.2 SNMP
What is SNMP?
The Simple Network Management Protocol is a network protocol which was
developed to monitor and control network elements such as, e.g. router, access
points etc. from a central station.
The protocol controls the communication between the monitored devices and the
monitoring station.
Due to its simplicity and versatility SNMP has developed to become a standard
which is supported by many terminal devices.
The information that is supplied by the “SNMP” is provided in a structured form.
This structure is referred to as MIB – Management Information Base.

What is a MIB?
An MIB (Management Information Base) is a standardized data structure
consisting of different SNMP variables, which are described by a language that is
independent of the target system.
The following screen shows the read out MIB file from the
SCLANACE W788-2RR that was read out through a “MIB browser”.
The view can vary depending on the MIB browser used.

To read out the “Clients list” from the access point, the
“snScalanceWDevicesMAC”MIB variable is used. The “OID number” of this MIB
variable is called: “1.3.6.1.4.1.4196.1.1.4.100.2.6.5.1.3.x”.
The “x” stands for the index for the “place” at which the MAC address is listed in
the “Clients list”.
In this application the first 10 places of the “Clients list” are read out.
