1.1 Structure and function
Structure
Automatic sen-
sor recognition
The data of the sensor and sensor cap are recalled by the meter when the
sensor is connected and is used for measurement and for measured value
documentation. The calibration data are stored in the sensor. Thus, the calibra-
tion is automatically retained if the sensor is connected to another meter.
The digital transmission technique guarantees the failure-free communication
with the meter even with long connection cables.

2.1 General information on the handling of the sensor cap
Please do not touch the sensor membrane with your fingers unnecessarily
Avoid any great mechanical stress of the sensor membrane (pressure,
scratches).

2.3 Measuring
Minimum
immersion
depth
Observe the required minimum immersion depth (see chapter 5 TECHNICAL
DATA).
Approach flow The OPOX 11-3 D.O. sensor enables precise measurements without any inci-
dent flow.
However, an incident flow of the sensor membrane improves the responding
behavior of the sensor (see chapter 5 TECHNICAL DATA). The incident flow can
be provided in different ways, e. g.:
The flow of the water to be measured is sufficient (aeration tank, water pipe,
stream)
Slowly pull the sensor through the water by hand (lake, container), or
Use a flow aid such as a magnetic stirrer
2.4 Function check and user calibration
Factory calibra-
tion
The OPOX 11-3 is factory calibrated. In the recommended application (see
page 5), the measuring characteristics of the sensor cap remain stable for the
specified service life. Thus, a user calibration is not usually required.
1. Unscrew the protective hood from the sensor by hand.
2. Pull off the protective cap (red).
3. Put the protective hood on the sensor head and screw it tight by hand
as far as it will go.
The sensor is immediately ready to measure.

When does a
function check
or user calibra-
tion make
sense?
A function check or user calibration can be useful in the following special cases:
If the measured values appear to be implausible and it is assumed that the
service life of the sensor cap is over
Routinely within the framework of the company quality assurance
Check- or cali-
bration medium
The user calibration takes place in water vapor-saturated air. The suitable con-
ditions are easily provided with the aid of the calibration and storing beaker. For
this purpose, moisten the sponge inside the calibration and storing beaker. Then
insert the sensor in the calibration and storing beaker. The sensor membrane
must be clean and dry for this.
Moisten the sponge in the calibration and storing beaker.
After inserting the sensor, wait for the temperatures of the sensor and storing
cap to adjust.
Note
The steps of the user calibration are described in detail in the operating manual
of the meter.
2.5 Storage
Always store the sensor with the calibration and storage vessel put on at a tem-
perature in the range 0 ... + 50 °C (32 ... 122 °F).

3 Maintenance, cleaning, replacement
3.1 General maintenance instructions
Handling of the
sensor cap
Dirt and moisture under the sensor cap can affect the functioning and shorten
the service life of the sensor cap. Therefore, make sure the working environ-
ment is clean and dry prior to removing the sensor cap.
Please do not touch the sensor membrane unnecessarily with your fin-
gers.Touch the sensor cap at the sides only.
Avoid any great mechanical stress of the sensor membrane (pressure,
scratches).
Exposure to light, particularly daylight, of the interior of the sensor cap will,
by-and-by, affect the measurement characteristics and shorten the service
life of the sensor cap. Therefore, the interior of the sensor cap should not be
exposed to direct sunlight. Avoid any exposure to light that exceeds the
extent required for necessary maintenance and cleaning activities. Store dis-
mantled sensor caps in a light-protected environment only.
3.2 Exchanging the sensor cap
Note
Before removing the sensor cap, observe the general maintenance instructions
in section 3.1.
To exchange the sensor cap, proceed as follows:

sensor cap 1. Pull the sensor out of the sample.
2. Clean the outside of the sensor (see section 3.3.1).
3. Unscrew the protective hood from the sensor by hand.
4. Thoroughly clean and dry the sensor head once again.
5. Grasp the sensor cap on the sides (arrows in figure on the left) and
unscrew it from the sensor anti-clockwise.
6. Remove the sealing ring.
Caution:
Do not push any tools or other sharp objects between the sealing sur-
faces. This would damage the sealing surfaces and sealing ring.
7. Remove any remaining sealing grease from the seat of the sealing
ring using a dry lens-cleaning towel.
Wipe off any other deposits using a moist lens-cleaning towel.
Wipe dry using a dry lens-cleaning towel.

Mounting the
sensor cap
3.3 Clean the sensor
3.3.1 Exterior cleaning
Extreme dirt on the sensor can affect the measuring characteristics. Biological
deposits for example, consume oxygen and can, when occurring on the sensor
membrane, impair the responding behavior and cause values that are too low.
Therefore, we recommend regular visual inspections and exterior cleaning as
necessary.
Pay attention to the following points for cleaning:
First, thoroughly rinse the sensor with tapwater to remove loosely adhering
dirt.
Rough dirt on the sensor shaft can be brushed off with a soft brush. Attention:
Do not use the brush in the area of the sensor membrane. Risk of damage!
The sensor cap including the sensor membrane should be wiped with a soft
and moist microfiber cloth.
8. Insert the sealing ring provided with the new sensor cap.
Caution:
Do not push any tools or other sharp objects between the sealing sur-
faces. This would damage the sealing surfaces and sealing ring.
Do not touch the measuring window. Wipe any fingerprints off the
measuring window as necessary.
9. If necessary, clean the sealing ring once again.
10. Cover the new sealing ring with a thin film of sealing grease.
Remove any excess sealing grease using a lens-cleaning towel.
11. Clean the surface of the measuring window using a lens-cleaning
towel.
12. Take the new sensor cap out of the container.
Dry the hollow of the sensor cap completely using a soft cloth.
13. Screw on the new sensor cap clockwise and by hand.
The sealing ring is between the sensor cap and sensor.
Caution:
Do not use any tools. Do not screw on the sensor cap too tight.
14. Put the protective hood on the sensor head and screw it tight by hand
as far as it will go.
15. Connect the sensor to the meter.
16. Enter the cap coefficients (K1 to K5 and KC) on the meter.
The cap coefficients are provided with the sensor cap (see operating
manual of the meter).

In the case of persisting dirt you can add some household washing-up liquid
to the tapwater. Attention: Never use any alcohol for cleaning!
3.3.2 Interior cleaning of sensor cap and sensor head
If moisture or dirt have penetrated under the sensor cap, e.g. because the
sensor cap is damaged, you can make the sensor ready for operation again as
follows:
CAUTION
Only use nonabrasive, alcohol-free detergents, as otherwise the optical
surfaces could be damaged.
Note
If the sensor cap is visibly damaged it has to be replaced.
3.4 Checking the zero point of the sensor
There are two methods to check the zero point of the sensor:
Measurement in a nitrogen atmosphere (recommended method)
Measurement in a sodium sulfite solution according to DIN EN 25814/
ISO 5814.
Test criterion The sensor is OK if the measuring instrument displays < 0.5 % D.O. saturation
after 15 minutes.
1. Remove the sensor cap (see section 3.2).
2. Clean the sensor head and sensor cap:
– Rinse all inner surfaces with tapwater
– Remove contamination containing fat and oil with warm water and
household washing-up liquid
– Then rinse all inner surfaces with deionized water
3. Pat dry all surfaces with a clean, lint free cloth.
4. Allow the sensor and sensor cap to dry completely at a dry location
so moisture can evaporate even from corners difficult to access.
When doing, so protect the inside of the sensor cap from light.
5. Put the sensor cap on (see section 3.2).

Die Daten von Sensor und Sensorkappe werden beim Anschließen des Sensors
durch das Messgerät abgerufen und zur Messung sowie zur Messwertdoku-
mentation verwendet. Durch die Speicherung der Kalibrierdaten im Sensor
bleibt die Kalibrierung beim Wechsel auf ein anderes Messgerät automatisch
erhalten.
Die digitale Übertragungstechnik gewährleistet eine störungsfreie Kommunika-

2.1 Allgemeine Hinweise zur Handhabung der Sensorkappe

Beachten Sie die erforderliche Mindesteintauchtiefe (siehe Kapitel 5 TECHNI-
SCHE DATEN).
Anströmung Der Sauerstoffsensor OPOX 11-3 ermöglicht präzise Messungen ohne Anströ-
mung.
Eine Anströmung der Sensormembran verbessert jedoch das Ansprechverhal-
ten des Sensors (siehe Kapitel 5 TECHNISCHE DATEN). Eine Anströmung ist auf
verschiedenen Wegen erreichbar, z. B.:
Die Strömungsgeschwindigkeit des zu messenden Wassers reicht bereits
aus (Belebungsbecken, Wasserleitung, Bach)
Den Sensor langsam mit der Hand durch das Wasser ziehen (See, Wasser-
behälter), oder
Anströmhilfe verwenden, z. B. Magnetrührer
2.4 Überprüfung und Anwenderkalibrierung
Werkskalibrie-
rung
Der Sauerstoffsensor OPOX 11-3 ist werkseitig kalibriert. Bei der empfohlenen
Anwendung (siehe Seite 14) bleibt die Messcharakteristik der Sensorkappe
über die spezifizierte Lebensdauer stabil, so dass eine Anwenderkalibrierung in
der Regel nicht erforderlich ist.
1. Den Schutzkorb von Hand vom Sensor abschrauben.
2. Schutzkappe (rot) abziehen.
3. Den Schutzkorb über den Sensorkopf schieben und von Hand bis
zum Anschlag festschrauben.
Der Sensor ist sofort messbereit.

Wann ist eine
Überprüfung/
Anwender-
kalibrierung
sinnvoll?
Eine Überprüfung/Anwenderkalibrierung kann in folgenden Sonderfällen hilf-
reich sein:
Wenn die Messwerte unplausibel erscheinen und der Verdacht besteht, dass
die Sensorkappe am Ende ihrer Lebensdauer ist
Routinemäßig im Rahmen einer betrieblichen Qualitätssicherung.
Prüf- bzw.
Kalibriermediu
m
Die Anwenderkalibrierung erfolgt in wasserdampfgesättigter Luft. Die richtigen
Bedingungen können Sie einfach mit Hilfe des Kalibrier- und Aufbewahrungsge-
fäßes sicherstellen. Befeuchten Sie dazu den Schwamm im Inneren des Kali-
brier- und Aufbewahrungsgefäßes. Führen Sie anschließend den Sensor in das
Kalibrier- und Aufbewahrungsgefäß ein. Die Sensormembran muss dabei sau-
ber und trocken sein.
Schwamm im Kalibrier- und Aufbewahrungsgefäß befeuchten.
Warten Sie nach dem Einführen des Sensors, bis sich die Temperaturen von
Sensor und Aufbewahrungskappe angeglichen haben.
Hinweis
Die genauen Schritte für die Anwenderkalibrierung lesen Sie bitte in der Bedie-
nungsanleitung des Messgeräts nach.
2.5 Aufbewahren
Bewahren Sie den Sensor immer mit aufgestecktem Kalibrier- und Aufbewah-
rungsgefäß bei einer Temperatur von 0 bis +50 °C (32 bis 122 °F) auf.

3 Wartung, Reinigung, Ersatzbedarf
3.1 Allgemeine Wartungshinweise
Handhabung
der Sensor-
kappe
Schmutz und Feuchtigkeit unter der Sensorkappe können die Funktion
beeinträchtigen und die Lebensdauer der Sensorkappe verkürzen. Achten
Sie deshalb auf eine saubere und trockene Arbeitsumgebung, wenn Sie die
Sensorkappe abnehmen.
Berühren Sie die Sensormembran nicht unnötig mit den Fingern. Fassen Sie
die Sensorkappe grundsätzlich nur an den Seiten an.
Vermeiden Sie starke mechanische Belastungen der Sensormembran
(Druck, Kratzer).
Die Einwirkung von Licht, insbesondere Tageslicht, auf das Innere der Sen-
sorkappe beeinträchtigt mit der Zeit die Messeigenschaften und verkürzt die
Lebensdauer. Setzen Sie deshalb das Innere der Sensorkappe keinem
direkten Sonnenlicht aus. Vermeiden Sie grundsätzlich jeden Lichteinfall, der
über das unvermeidbare Maß im Rahmen notwendiger Wartungs- und Rei-
nigungsarbeiten hinausgeht. Bewahren Sie abmontierte Sensorkappen nur
in lichtgeschützter Umgebung auf.
3.2 Sensorkappe wechseln
Hinweis
Beachten Sie vor dem Entfernen der Sensorkappe die allgemeinen Wartungs-
hinweise in Abschnitt 3.1.

Gehen Sie zum Wechseln der Sensorkappe wie folgt vor:

1. Den Sensor aus der Messlösung ziehen.
2. Den Sensor äußerlich reinigen (siehe Abschnitt 3.3.1).
3. Den Schutzkorb von Hand vom Sensor abschrauben.
4. Den Sensorkopf nochmals gründlich säubern und trockenwischen.
5. Die Sensorkappe an den Seiten (Pfeile in Abbildung links) mit den
Fingern greifen und entgegen dem Uhrzeigersinn vom Sensor
abschrauben.
6. Dichtungsring entfernen.
Vorsicht:
Keine Werkzeuge oder sonstige spitzen Gegenstände zwischen die
Dichtflächen schieben. Dichtflächen und Dichtring werden dadurch
beschädigt.
7. Den Sitz des Dichtungsrings mit einem trockenen Brillenreinigungs-
tuch von Resten von Dichtungsfett reinigen.
Sonstige Ablagerungen mit einem feuchten Brillenreinigungstuch
abwischen.
Mit einem trockenen Brillenreinigungstuch trockenwischen.
8. Den mit der neuen Sensorkappe gelieferten Dichtungsring einset-
zen.
Vorsicht:
Keine Werkzeuge oder sonstige spitzen Gegenstände zwischen die
Dichtflächen schieben. Dichtflächen und Dichtring werden dadurch
beschädigt.
Das Messfenster nicht berühren. Das Messfenster ggf. von Finger-
abdrücken reinigen.
9. Gegebenenfalls den Dichtungsring nochmals reinigen.
10. Einen dünnen Film Dichtungsfett auf den neuen Dichtungsring auf-
tragen.
Überschüssiges Dichtungsfett mit einem Brillenreinigungstuch ent-
fernen.

3.3 Sensor reinigen
3.3.1 Äußere Reinigung
Starker Schmutz auf dem Sensor kann die Messeigenschaften beeinflussen.
Biofilme zum Beispiel zehren Sauerstoff und können, wenn sie auf der Sensor-
membran auftreten, das Ansprechverhalten verschlechtern und Minderbefunde
verursachen. Wir empfehlen deshalb eine regelmäßige Sichtkontrolle und eine
äußere Reinigung nach Bedarf.
Beachten Sie bei der Reinigung folgende Punkte:
Spülen Sie den Sensor zuerst gründlich mit Leitungswasser ab, um lose
anhaftenden Schmutz zu entfernen.
Grobe Verschmutzungen am Sensorschaft können Sie mit einer weichen
Bürste abbürsten. Achtung: Wenden Sie die Bürste nicht im Bereich der Sen-
sormembran an. Gefahr der Beschädigung!
Die Sensorkappe einschließlich Sensormembran wischen Sie mit einem
feuchten weichen Mikrofasertuch ab.
Bei hartnäckigem Schmutz können Sie dem Leitungswasser etwas Haus-
haltsspülmittel beifügen. Achtung: Verwenden Sie keine Alkohole zur Reini-
gung!
3.3.2 Sensorkappe und Sensorkopf innen reinigen
Sollte, z. B. durch eine Beschädigung der Sensorkappe, Feuchtigkeit und
Schmutz unter die Sensorkappe eingedrungen sein, können Sie den Sensor wie
folgt wieder messbereit machen:
VORSICHT
Nur nichtscheuernde, alkoholfreie Reinigungsmittel verwenden, da sonst
die optischen Oberflächen beschädigt werden können.
13. Neue Sensorkappe im Uhrzeigersinn von Hand auf den Sensor
schrauben.
Der Dichtungsring befindet sich zwischen Sensorkappe und Sensor.
Vorsicht:
Keine Werkzeuge verwenden. Sensorkappe nicht zu fest aufschrau-
ben.
14. Den Schutzkorb über den Sensorkopf schieben und von Hand bis
zum Anschlag festschrauben.
15. Sensor an das Messgerät anstecken.
16. Kappenkoeffizienten (K1 bis K5 und KC) am Messgerät eingeben.
Die Kappenkoeffizienten werden mit der Sensorkappe geliefert
(siehe Bedienungsanleitung zum Messgerät).

Hinweis
Sollte die Sensorkappe sichtbar beschädigt sein, muss sie ausgetauscht wer-
den.
3.4 Nullpunkt des Sensors überprüfen
Es gibt 2 Möglichkeiten, den Nullpunkt des Sensors zu überprüfen:
Messung in Stickstoffatmosphäre (empfohlene Methode)
Messung in Natriumsulfitlösung nach DIN EN 25814/ISO 5814.
Prüfkriterium Der Sensor ist in Ordnung, wenn das Messgerät nach 15 Minuten < 0,5 %
Sauerstoffsättigung anzeigt.
1. Sensorkappe entfernen (siehe Abschnitt 3.2).
2. Sensorkopf und Sensorkappe reinigen:
– Alle inneren Oberflächen mit Leitungswasser spülen
– Fett- und ölhaltige Verunreinigungen mit warmem Wasser und
Haushaltsspülmittel entfernen
– Abschließend alle inneren Oberflächen mit entionisiertem Wasser
spülen
3. Alle Oberflächen mit einem sauberen, fusselfreien Tuch trockentup-
fen.
4. Sensor und Sensorkappe an einem trockenen Ort vollständig
nachtrocknen lassen, damit Feuchtigkeit aus schwer zugänglichen
Stellen entweichen kann. Dabei das Innere der Sensorkappe vor
Lichteinfall schützen.
5. Sensorkappe wieder aufsetzen (siehe Abschnitt 3.2).
