1.0 INTRODUCTION
The Z3-Q603-RPS is a compact video encoder system. The system offers encoding capabilities of H.265/HEVC
and H.264 video up to 4K resolutions.
Together with the 30-0101 QCS603 CPU module board, the 30-0103 and 30-0104 boards form the Z3-Q603-
RPS video encoder system. The 30-0103 and 30-0104 boards provide power and I/O connectivity to the Z3-
Q603-RPS system.
The 30-0103 board contains all the power supplies and circuits necessary to implement the various inputs
and outputs. It is designed to attach directly to the CPU module, and has the following features:
•Micro-HDMI jack for A/V output, up to 4K resolution at 30 fps
•Micro-HDMI jack for A/V input up to 4K resolution at 30 fps
•Composite video input supporting NTSC and PAL standards
•KEL connector for HD video cameras with LVDS interface format
•KEL connector for 4K video cameras with HDMI/TMDS interface
The 30-0104 board contains all the large jacks, bus driver electronics and associated ESD protection. It is
intended to mount directly to the 30-0103 forming a 3-board stack, and has the following features:
•Threaded DC jack for DC power input
•RJ45 jack and magnetics for Gigabit Ethernet
•RS485 bus driver for PTZ control
•RS232 bus driver for the serial console port and auxiliary RS232 port
•RCA jack for composite video input (30-0104-30 and later)
•USB Type-C jack
•Switch for clearing presets
•Status LED
•Genlock indication LED

2.2 Connection to a Sony 4K Camera Block
J5 provides connectivity support for 4K cameras such as the FCB-ER8300, ER8530, ER8550 and FCB-EW9500H
with Sony-style 30-pin KEL jacks. These cameras have HDMI interface and power input on pins 27-30 of the
KEL jack.
WARNING: ONLY USE THE CORRECT KEL RIBBON CABLE PROVIDED BY Z3 TECHNOLOGY.
Using an incorrect type of KEL cable will likely permanently damage the camera body and/or encoder.
WARNING: Always insert the KEL plug with the shiny flat side facing up. Do not force the KEL plug into
the jack. Doing so is likely to cause permanent damage to the jack.
Please note that LVDS camera blocks, such as the FCB-EV7520, must use jack J7 of the Q603-RPS
encoder systems. Connecting the wrong camera block to the encoder will result in permanent damage
to the camera and/or encoder.

KEL makes two versions of ribbon cables that physically fit when connecting the encoder to the camera. One
cable is “straight thru”, with pin 1 connected to pin 1, and another is a “cross” type, with pin 1 connected
to pin N (N=30 in this case).
Z3 Technology provides the correct cable as part of the Q603-RPS complete starter kit system. The KEL cable
is also sold separately (ordering part number: CBL-0025-01). Please ONLY USE THE CABLE PROVIDED BY Z3
TECHNOLOGY to connect the Sony FCB-ER8300 to the I/F Front End PCB of the Q603 30-0103.
The correct cable is the “straight thru”, with pin 1 connecting to pin 1. The figure below shows the straight
cable. Note how the connectors at the ends of the cable are positioned in opposite orientation so that pin 1
on one side connects to pin 1 on the other side.

connection necessary between the camera and the encoder. The KEL ribbon cable provides the following
connectivity:
▪Power from the encoder to the camera
▪Video from the camera to the encoder
▪Sony VISCA™controls, bidirectional, using a serial port
This connector provides a direct connection with the Sony FCB-ER8300 block camera. Make sure to use the
KEL ribbon cable provided or approved by Z3 Technology. Risk of permanent damage to the camera or
encoder exists if a non-approved cable is used.
The connector used is a KEL USL00-30L.
The pin assignments on J5 are shown in the table below.
Please note that the pin numbering of J5 on the Interface Front End PCB is opposite of that on the Sony FCB-
ER8300 camera.

2.3 Connection to the Sony FCB-EV7520A Camera
J7 provides connectivity support for LVDS cameras with Sony-style 30-pin KEL jacks such as FCB-EV7520,
EV7100 series, FCB-EV9500L cameras and other cameras compatible with the Sony LVDS connection. These
cameras have 4 or 8 lanes of LVDS interface and power input on pins 14-18 of the KEL jack.
Attention: the FCB-EV9500M camera is *NOT* compatible with the J7 jack.
WARNING: ONLY USE THE CORRECT KEL RIBBON CABLE PROVIDED BY Z3 TECHNOLOGY.
Using an incorrect cable can permanently damage the camera body or encoder.
WARNING: Always insert the KEL plug with the shiny flat side facing up. Do not force the KEL plug into
the jack. Doing so is likely to cause permanent damage to the jack.
WARNING: ONLY USE THE SONY FCB-EV7520 CAMERA ON THE J7 JACK.
Using an incorrect camera is likely to permanently damage the camera body and/or encoder.
Please note that the Sony 4K camera blocks, such as the FCB-ER8300, must use jack J5 of the Q603-RPS
encoder systems. Connecting the wrong camera block to the encoder will result in permanent damage
to the camera and/or encoder.

The KEL ribbon cable between the HE2K-DCK-1X and the FCB-EV7520 block camera is the only connection
necessary between the camera and the encoder. The KEL ribbon cable provides the following
connectivity:
▪Power from the encoder to the camera
▪Video from the camera to the encoder
▪Sony VISCA™ controls, bidirectional, using a serial port
This connector provides a direct connection with the Sony FCB-EV7520A (or equivalent) block camera. Make
sure to use the KEL ribbon cable provided or approved by Z3 Technology. Using a cable with the wrong
configuration or connecting the encoder to the wrong camera type WILL cause permanent damage to the
camera and/or encoder. Please connect to CN401 (digital I/O) on the Sony EV7520A camera block.
IMPORTANT:
If you are planning to use a camera block other than the Sony FCB-EV7520A please make sure that the
camera is compatible at the connector level. There are various different pin assignments and/or operating
requirements on camera blocks other than the FCB-EV7520A - even blocks by Sony. Connecting an
incompatible camera is likely to cause permanent physical damage to the camera, the encoder or more
likely both camera and encoder. In particular, pay attention to the location of the power pins on the
camera.
Also, when connecting a KEL cable to the camera or encoder, make sure that the pin contacts on the cable
are facing up, away from the PCB. Inserting the plug upside down will cause damage to the plug and to the
socket.
The pin assignments of J7 are shown in the table below.
Please note that the pin numbering of J7 on the Interface Front End PCB is opposite of that on the Sony
FCB-EV7520 camera, so that it provides a straight through pass. Please only use with a KEL cable provided by

2.4 Connection to a Generic HDMI Camera

Connector J4 allows for an external HDMI source to be connected to the encoder.
This is a standard Micro-HDMI (Type D) connector.

2.5 Connect to a HDMI Monitor

Connector J10 allows to connect a HDMI Monitor for pass-through of the camera source.
This is a standard Micro-HDMI (Type D) connector.

2.6 Composite Input
A Composite port is also available on the Interface Front End PCB of the Q603-RPS 30-0103. See Figure 2
Top side of 30-0103 above.
Connector J6 allows for an external composite source to be connected to the encoder.
The jack used is a standard uFL connector, such as Taoglas RECE.20279.001E.01. The composite video input
is terminated at the board into 75Ω, and expects a standard 1Vpp signal.
The pin assignments for the composite input are shown in the table below.

The 30-0104 board has the following connections:

3.1 RS485 and RS232 Serial Port Header
The J4 header contains a RS485 port and a RS232 port.
The RS485 port is mapped to the UART at QUP13 of the Qualcom processor, with QUP13_RFR serving as the
direction control. The RS232 is mapped to the UART at QUP15.
Additionally, J4 provides a 3.3V power source with up to 100mA available.
The pin assignments of J4 are composite shown in the table below.

3.2 USB Type C Jack
The USB-C jack J7 is primarily intended for software loading during manufacturing or recovery. It is also
available for general use, although there is limited software support.
3.3 Presets Clear Switch, SW1
SW1 is a momentary switch intended to be used to reset the presets to factory defaults. Pressing SW1 during
the power on sequence causes the CPU to boot from the USB bus. This feature is used for software recovery
and initial software loading at the factory.
3.4 Status LED
This is a bi-color LED used to convey encoder status. Please refer to the encoder’s user’s guide.
3.5 DC Power Jack
J9 is a threaded jack used to feed power to the encoder and any cameras connected via KEL cable to the 30-
0103 board. The jack is a PJ-065A from CUI.
3.6 Serial Console Port
The serial console port connects to a RS232 terminal to provide access to debug information. It can also be
configured as a user serial port. It is driven by the UART at QUP12.
The connector at J6 is a standard 2.5mm circular stereo audio jack, with the tip assigned to RXD, ring
assigned to TXD and the sleeve connected to ground. Use a standard 2.5mm stereo audio plug to connect. Z3
provides a 2.5mm to DB9 cable with the encoder system.
3.7 Ethernet RJ45 Port
This is a standard Ethernet jack with 10/100/1000 Ethernet support.
3.8 Composite Video Input
The composite video input RCA jack takes one channel of NTSC or PAL video to the 30-0103 interface board.
This is a standard video input, terminated internally by 75Ω, which expects video at 1Vpp level.
This connector can also be used as the genlock input for a block camera which accepts genlock such as the
Sony FCB-ER8550.
3.9 Genlock Indication
This LED indicates that a genlock-capable camera is correctly locked to a video source connected to the
composite video input jack J8.

5.0 THERMAL CONSIDERATIONS
The module requires that heat is removed from the CPU chip and dissipated into the environment in order to
maintain its operating temperature specification. It may be necessary to also remove heat from the memory
IC in some applications. The system designer is responsible for implementing the cooling mechanisms
necessary for any given application.
The CPU IC is the most critical component. Its’ datasheet specifies a junction temperature Tj max of 105°C,
and 3GPP-mode ambient operating temperature of -20° to +60°C.
Proper operation of the module requires that the thermal solution employed is capable of maintaining the
operation temperature within these parameters.
The FPGA on the 30-0103 board also requires careful attention from a thermal design perspective. This
component dissipates a significant amount of heat which could get “trapped” between the CPU module PCB
and the connector PCB.
The system-level designer is responsible to ensure that all components on all boards operate within their
temperature specification. The FPGA specification requires that the die temperature is maintained between
0°C and 100°C. There is a temperature sensor in the FPGA die which is displayed on the encoder’s GUI status
page.
The Z3 design uses an aluminum block to remove heat from the CPU on the module board. This is a heat
pipe and not a heat sink. The heat pipe is efficient at transferring the heat out of the CPU, but it is not
efficient at dissipating the heat. Therefore, it is necessary to use an adequate heat sink thermally
connected to the heat pipe to remove the heat from the system. For example, the heat pipe could be
thermally connected to the wall of an aluminum enclosure.
The Z3 example design uses thermal pads to conduct heat from the 30-0103 board to the module board and
to the connector board. The intention is that a significant portion of the thermal energy generated at the
30-0103 board is conducted to the module board, where it will be extracted via heat pipe and heat sink.
This is just an example of a method to dissipate heat from the FPGA and should not be deemed sufficient or
adequate for any given application. The system-level application designer must engineer a proper thermal
solution that is fit for the application.
