1.0 GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The HE2K-MINI-RPS is a H.265/HEVC, H.264 and MJPEG video encoder. It is capable of accepting HD video
from the camera at 60 frames per second and producing IP streams that can be sent on a standard Ethernet
cable. The HE2K-MINI-RPS has one KEL connector for Sony FCB-EV7520A or compatible cameras, one Micro-SD
port, 2.5mm jack for RS232 serial console, two LVTTL serial ports, USB 3.0, and Ethernet.

2.1 Supported Resolutions
2.1.1 Supported Input Resolutions
The HE2K-MINI-RPS supports Sony LVDS input from a KEL connector.
Supported Input Resolutions:
1080p60, 1080p59.94, 1080p50, 1080p30, 1080p29.97, 1080p25
720p60, 720p59.94, 720p50, 720p30, 720p29.97, 720p25
2.1.2 Supported Input Resolutions
The HE2K-MINI-RPS supports simultaneous output of up to three streams encoded at different
resolutions, frame rates and bitrates. Supported stream resolutions are:
1080p (2MP), 1280x1024, 720p (1MP), 480p, 576p, 1024x576, 704x576, 640x480, 640x360, 420x380,
352x576, 352x288, 352x240, 320x240, and 320x180

In addition to scaling the resolution, the camera is also capable of scaling down the frame rate to
conserve bandwidth. Each channel can select from full frame rate, half frame rate, quarter or sixth
frame rate. For example, it is possible to configure a primary stream of 1920x1080 at 60 fps
simultaneously with a secondary stream at 480p at 10 fps.
The maximum performance for two channels is two 1080p60 streams.

4.1 RS232 Serial Port
A 2.5mm stereo audio jack that is used as the system console port driven by UART0.
This is a RS232 port with the pins assigned as below:

The default settings is 115200 baud, 8-bits, no parity, 1 stop bit.
4.2 LVTTL Serial Ports
This header provides access to UART1 and UART4 with LVTTL levels.
The connector used on the board is a Hirose DF13C-6P-1.25V.
The signal assignment is shown in table X below:

4.3 USB 3.0
This is a standard USB 3.0 host jack, with up to 700 mA power capacity.
The encoder provides power for a device but cannot be powered itself from this jack.
4.4 Gigabit Ethernet
This is a standard RJ45 jack for Gigabit Ethernet.
4.5 DC Power Input
DC power input for the encoder system. Provide +12V DC (center positive) to jack J6 for normal operation.
The jack used is from Contact Technology part number DC-009-1x-S124 with 1.3mm center pin. It mates with
plugs with a 3.5mm O.D. and 1.3mm center pin.
The power applied to this jack is also delivered directly to a camera connected to the encoder board via KEL
cable. This means that the voltage levels from the power supply connected here must be within the
requirements of the camera. Usually this means that the DC voltage applied must be between 9 VDC and
12VDC.

If required, it is possible to disconnect the power path from the J6 power input to the encoder board
altogether by removing R23. This is a large SMD resistor located near the console port jack.
When this connector is severed, the J6 DC power input jack will only provide power to the encoder system
but not the camera. See section 4.8, Camera Power Connector below.
4.6 Micro-SD Card Connector
This is a standard Micro-SD connector. The encoder can record streams directly to the SD card.
4.7 KEL Connector for Video Input
The KEL connector located on the main encoder board implements the interface with Sony EV7520 cameras
or compatible.
Please be sure to only use cables provided by Z3 technology.
DO NOT USE KEL CABLES FROM SONY – PERMANENT DAMAGE WILL OCCUR.
See section 6.1 below.
Be sure to only use with HD cameras with Sony LVDS interface. This interface is *NOT* designed
to be used with Sony 4K cameras, which have HDMI interface.

DC Power
Power output from the encoder to the camera. The power provided
here comes directly from the board to board connector J2 (pins 2,4,6
and 8) or from the camera power header J4. If R23 on the connector
PCB is removed, then the connector PCB will not provide power, and
the only way to power a KEL camera is though J4.

Pin 1 of the connector is marked on the PCB silkscreen with a triangle. Pin 1 is located near the Micro-SD
card, while pin 30 is located near the camera power header J4. See section 4.8 below about the Camera
Power Connector.
4.8 Camera Power Connector
Header connector J4 can be used to provide power to a camera connected to the KEL connector J3, or can
be used to gain access to the raw input power rail. J4 connects directly to the KEL connector DC Power pins
and to the +12V power pins on the J2 board-to-board connector.
The connector used is a BM03B-ACHFKS from JST. Pin 1 is the +12V power rail, pin 3 is GND.

5.0 THERMAL GUIDELINES
The HE2K-MINI-RPS is designed to be attached to a heat sink or the wall of a metal enclosure serving as the
heat sink. The thermal performance of the heat sink will determine the operating temperature range.
The HE2K-MINI-RPS will operate at an ambient temperature from -5° to 70°C without a thermal solution,
provided that there is unimpeded air flow around the two boards and some air flow.
A thermal solution that meets the requirements outlined in this document is required.

6.0 GETTING STARTED WITH THE HE2K-MINI-RPS
Note: Some GUI images may reference the Z3Cam, functionality and interface is otherwise the same.
6.1 Connecting the KEL Cable
If you have received an HE2K-MINI-RPS assembly, you will need to connect it to the Sony FCB-EV7520A
camera block. The Interface Front End PCB of the HE2K-MINI-RPS assembly has a 30-pin KEL connector
that allows a flexible ribbon cable to be used to connect the encoder assembly to an identical connector
on the Sony FCB- EV7520A.
(1) Connect the KEL ribbon cable to the Sony FCB-EV7520A block camera. (Gold teeth face up)
(2) Connect the other end of the KEL ribbon cable to the Interface Front PCB. (Gold teeth face away
from PCB’s)
WARNING: Only use a Z3 approved KEL ribbon cable to connect Z3’s boards to the Sony camera.
Using an incorrect cable (the cables provided by Sony) can permanently damage the boards or
camera.
The KEL cable is sold separately (ordering part number: CBL-0025-01).

6.2 Access the User Interface Using ZFinder
ZFinder is a PC utility that allows you to find any Z3 Technology product on your network. If you have
not yet downloaded this to your computer, you can find this program at www.z3stream.com/downloads
(1) Verify your PC is set to DHCP. If it is set to a static IP address, ZFinder may be unable to discover
your camera.
Note: The HE2K-MINI-RPS is set to DHCP by default. If no DHCP server is available on the network, a static IP
address of 192.168.0.120 and a netmask of 255.255.0.0 will be assigned. The IP address can be manually
entered as the URL in a browser window to access the user interface.
(2) Run the ZFinder PC utility on your PC. You may need to allow it past any firewalls or security
programs on your PC. The ZFinder window appears and completes a scan of the network. ZFinder
then lists all Z3 systems connected to the network. The HE2K-MINI-RPS appears.
(3) Click on the HE2K-MINI-RPS entry in the window to select it. This will cause the Edit Device, Open
Device and Flash LEDs buttons to activate.

Note: Selecting Edit Device allows for manual changes to network settings. See Section 11.9, ZFinder, for more
information.
Note: If the device appears in red, there is a network error, and network settings will need to be modified in
order to access the user interface.
(4) Click on Open Device. An internet browser window is opened in your default web browser (for best
results, Firefox or Chrome are recommended) and the user interface appears with the System Setup
tab open.

(5) By default, the system will have automatically started encoding. Click on the CH1 tab for channel
one configuration settings. If the encoder status message in the bottom right corner of the screen
shows RUNNING, you will need to click the stop or Stop All button in order to change any settings.

7.0 STREAMING CONTROL
This section gives step-by-step instructions on setting the HE2K-MINI-RPS to output and stream video using
each of the output format options: UDP, RTP, RTSP and RTMP. In addition to the HE2K-MINI-RPS, a Windows
PC with the VLC media player

downloaded is required. Please see Section 9.6, Decoder Options, for more
information on compatible decoders and PC configuration and requirements for H.265/HEVC decode at HD
resolutions.
7.1 Stream UDP
7.1.1 UDP Camera Setup
Note: Settings in the user interface cannot be changed if the unit is currently encoding.
(1) If necessary, click on the Stop button in the Channel Controls section of the user interface CH1 tab
or the Stop All button in the lower right corner of the screen of any tab.
(2) Verify the Output Resolution is set to Follow Input to output a HD stream. If a lower resolution
output is desired, select this in the dropdown menu and resizing will occur.
(3) Select the Video Codec you would like to use for your video encoding. In the pictured example
H265(HEVC) is selected.
(4) Under Output Setup, select UDP in the Output Format dropdown menu.
(5) Set Dest Address to:
a. the IP address of your PC that will be running the VLC media player. To determine the correct
IP address of your PC, see APPENDIX A: Finding the IP Address of Your Computer. In the
example pictured, 192.168.0.6 is used.
b. or a multicast address. An example multicast address would be 225.1.2.3. If you are on a
shared network, check with your Network Administrator.
(6) Make note of the value listed for Dest Port. This will be 8600 by default when your system is first
received.
Note: By default, a limited selection of video encoding settings are available in the user interface. See Section
9.2, “Advanced Settings Mode”, for more information on accessing additional settings.

(7) Click on the Start button. After a moment, the encoder status will change to RUNNING and the fields
above will appear in dark grey. The status LED on the unit will blink green when streaming.

7.1.2 Run VLC to View UDP Stream
Note: Verify your PC is set up to handle decode of H.265 content at HD resolutions. See Section 10.1, “PC
Configuration for HD HEVC/H.265 Decode”, for more information.
(8) Open the VLC media player on your PC.
(9) Select the Media menu.
(10) Select Open Network Stream.
(11) Under the Network tab, enter “udp://@Dest_Address:Dest_Port” for the network URL.
c. Dest_Address will be values of the IP address or multicast address entered in the Dest
Address field in the user interface CH1 tab. The IP address used in this example is
192.168.0.6.
d. Dest_Port will match the value found in the Dest Port field in the Encoder tab. The default
value is 8600.
(4) Change
to “UDP”
(1) If necessary, click “Stop”
(7) Click “Start”
(2) Verify is
“Follow input”
(3) Verify is
“H265(HEVC)”
(5) Set to PC
IP Address or
Multicast Address

(12) Press Enter or click Play.You will see your camera’s video streaming to VLC.
