1.0 GENERAL INFORMATION
Preface1.1
The ZEUSZ3-HE4K-01 is a compact H.264 encoder and decoder that supports HD resolutions up to 2160p
at 30 frames per second (4K Ultra HD). Video from HDMI can be streamed via UDP or RTP or to be saved
to a .ts file through USB or SATA2. It is configurable through an easy-to-use HTTP-based user interface.
The Z3-HE4K-01 is the ideal solution for industrial video, video distribution, surveillance and remote
monitoring.
The Z3-HE4K-01 is also available with a multi-stream software upgrade capable of simultaneously
streaming one source in 4K and up to 1080p30. Please contact your Z3 sales account manager for more
information.
2.0 QUICK START GUIDE
If You Have Received a System from Z3 with the Software Preloaded2.1
To start working with the encoder, you can go straight to Section 6.0, “GETTING STARTED AND RUNNIG
THE ENCODER,”on page 10. This section describes how to quickly stream 4K through the Ethernet via
UDP or RTP. Adding password protection is described in Section 9.4, “Using the Password Feature,” on
page 31. Information on RTMP mode can be found in Section 7.0, “STREAMING RTMP,” on page 19. Details
on running the Decoder can be found in Section 8.0, “RUNNING THE DECODER,” on page 22. Finally, a
summary of each parameter that can be configured in the user interface is given in Section 10.0,
“SUMMARY OF OPTIONS,” on page 38.
If You Already Have a System from Z3 and Need to Update the Firmware2.2
You can update the firmware via the HTTP-based graphical user interface (GUI) by following the
instructions in Section 9.3, “Making a Firmware Update,” on page 30.

6.0 GETTING STARTED AND RUNNING THE ENCODER
This section gives step-by-step instructions on using the Z3-HE4K-01 to stream 2160p video to VLC media
player running on your PC. In addition to the Z3-HE4K-01, a 4K video source with HDMI output and a PC are
required.
*Note: Actual version numbers for your ZEUS product may differ from those pictured in this document.
Prepare the 4K Source6.1
(1) Set the video source to output 3840x2160 at 30fps and connect an HDMI1.4 cable to it.
-29.97, 25, 24 and 23.98fps also supported.
-If you are using a VISCA or other camera control protocol compatible camera, see Section 9.6 for
information on camera control via the Z3-HE4K-01.
Connect and Power Up the Z3-HE4K-016.2
(2) Connect the HDMI1.4 cable from your video source to “HDMI In”on the back of the unit.
(3) Connect an Ethernet cable from “Ethernet” on the back of the unit to a switch, router or other DHCP
server on the same network as your Windows PC.
(4) Connect the 12V power supply and turn on the power switch. It will take 45-60 seconds to boot. The
red power LED will turn on immediately. After about five seconds, both status LED’s will blink on and
off. When the right LED remains on, the unit is ready to encode.
*Note: If the left LED is blinking, the encoder has auto-started and is currently encoding.

Access the User Interface using ZFinder6.3
ZFinder is a PC Utility that allows you to find any Z3 product on your network. If you have not
downloaded this to your computer, you can find it on the USB drive provided with your system.
(5) Verify your PC is set to DHCP. If it is set to a static IP address, ZFinder will be unable to discover
your encoder, or it will appear in red and you will be unable to proceed further.
(6) Run the “ZFinder” PC Utility on your Windows PC. The ZFinder window appears. ZFinder completes a
scan of the network and lists the location of all Z3 systems connected to the network. In this case,
the Z3-HE4K-01 appears.
(7) Click on the Z3-HE4K-01 entry in the window. This will cause the “Edit Device”, “Open Device” and
“Flash LEDs” boxes to activate.

*Note:Selecting “Edit Device” allows for manual changes to network settings. Selecting “Flash
LED’s” is helpful when multiple encoders are connected to the same network.

(8) Click “Open Device”. An Internet browser window is opened (for best results, Firefox or Chrome are
recommended) and the HTTP-based graphical user interface (GUI) appears at the System Setup tab.
(9) Confirm that the Operation Mode in the lower right corner is “Encoder UltraHD.” If it is not, select
“Encoder UltraHD” from the dropdown menu.
(10) Click on the CH1 tab to bring up the channel 1 encoder settings.

(11) On the “CH1” tab, change “Output Format” to “UDP.”
(12) Set the “Dest Address” to:
(a) the IP address of your PC that will be running the VLC media player (in the pictured
example, 192.168.0.6)
(b) or to a multicast address (An example multicast address would be “225.1.2.3”. If you are
on a shared network, check with your Network Administrator. See Appendix B if streaming
to multiple networks is desired.)
(13) Make note of the value of “Dest Port” (This will be “5004” by default).
(14) Verify whether or not your video source supports audio. If it does not support audio, set “Audio

Enable” to “False” for the best performance.
(15) Click “start”.
(16) After your changes, the “CH1” tab should have the following settings:

(17) Run VLC on your PC (Version used by Z3: 2.1.5)
(18) Select Media –Open Network Stream. In the box, type “udp://@192.168.0.6:5004”, where
“192.168.0.6” matches the values of the computer IP address or multicast address entered for “Dest
Address” previously, and 5004 is the value of “Dest Port” noted previously.
(19) Press “Play.”
(20) You will now see your 4K video streaming to VLC.

(21) In the user interface, click the “stop” button to stop any previous encoding in progress.
(22) In the CH1 tab, change “Output Format” to “RTP.”
(23) Change “Dest Address” to the IP address of the PC running VLC or a multicast address (the pictured
example is 192.168.0.6).
(24) Click on the “start” button to begin encoding.

(25) Open VLC. Select “Media –Open Network Stream”
(26) In the “Open Media” box, type “rtsp://192.168.81.68/{name}.mp4”, where “192.168.81.68” is the
IP address of the Z3-HE4K-01, and {name} is “z3-1” for unicast streaming, and “z3-1m” for multicast
streaming.
In the pictured example, the IP address of the Z3-HE4K-01 is a static IP address value of
192.168.81.68 and unicast streaming is being done. The user would type in
“rtsp://192.168.81.68/z3-1.mp4”:
You can find the IP address of your encoder as the URL in your open web browser or by using ZFinder.

Tuning for Latency6.6
For latency, the key parameter to work with is Maximum Delay.
Maximum Delay defines the number of milliseconds of buffering the encoder has to work with. The
higher this value, the more buffers it has to work with and the more time it has to “smooth things out”
for challenging content. However, a higher value also causes latency to increase accordingly. To
minimize latency, this value should be set to the lowest possible value. The lowest value Z3
recommends is 100.
Figure 14 shows the suggested values for Maximum Delay for three common use cases:

RTP offers lower latency than UDP, so for the lowest latency you should use RTP.
If you are streaming to VLC, you can reduce latency on the decode side by adjusting the network caching
value. By default, this is set to 1000ms. You can lower this to as low as 200ms. To do this, go to the
following:
VLC →Tools →Preferences →Show Settings (ALL) →Input / Codecs →Network caching (ms)

7.0 STREAMING RTMP
This section shows how to use the Z3-HE4K-01 to stream over RTMP to a server. Z3 has used the Wowza
Streaming EngineTM as an example server for RTMP streaming.
*Note: VLC does not support RTMP. The test player within Wowza Streaming EngineTM is recommended.
Connect the Encoder7.1
(1) Follow steps (1) –(10) in Section 6.0 to connect the Z3-HE4K-01 for encode and bring up the encoder
user interface.
Configure for RTMP Streaming7.2
(2) Click on the “CH1” tab.
(3) Set “Output Format”to “RTMP” using the dropdown menu.
(4) For “Dest Address”, type “192.168.0.2:1935/live/4k”, where:
a. “192.168.0.2” is the IP address of the PC with the Wowza server
b. “1935” is the PC port
c. “live” matches the application selected within Wowza
d. “4k” represents the name of your stream and will also need to match the information
provided to Wowza in Section 7.5.
(5) After you’re finished, your settings should look like the following:

(6) Install the Wowza server on a PC on your network (for details on configuring Wowza, please see
Appendix A).

(7) Click “start” on the CH1 tab.
View the Content on Wowza7.5
(8) Go to a PC that is on the same network as the Wowza server and open a web browser (in this
example, FireFox is used). Type in the URL of the Wowza server with the port 8088 (in this example,

(9) At the top you will see four options: Home, Server, Applications, and Help. Click on “Applications”
and select “live”. Then click on “Test Players” in the top right hand corner.
