1Safety Notes
1.1 General
Before attaching and starting up the illuminator,
carefully read this operating manual. If you
need additional information, contact Carl Zeiss
Service or an authorized Carl Zeiss service
agency.
To ensure reliable and troublefree operation of
the microscope illuminator, make sure to
observe the precautions and warnings given in
this operating manual.
Only use this microscope illuminator on Carl
Zeiss microscopes.
For the microscope Axiovert 40 or 25, use the
HBO 50 with the Cat. No. 423003-9010-000.
Additionally, observe the provided operating
manual describing the function of the
ebq 52 ac lamp power supply.
Particularly observe the safety notes given in this
operating manual.
For the handling and operation of the burner
(lamp) of the HBO 50, observe the specifications
and safety instructions of the lamp
manufacturers, (e.g. OSRAM).
The HBO 50 illuminator may only be
used by personnel appropriately
trained or instructed by Carl Zeiss
Service!
Only Carl Zeiss Service is allowed to open the
lamp power supply!

safety and electromagnetic
compatibility
The HBO 50 Microscope Illuminator has been
produced and tested in compliance with
EN61010 Part 1 (VDE 0411). It was delivered in
a safe and perfect condition.
The equipment meets the requirements of the
EC Directives 2006/95/EC, Low voltage directive
and 2004/108/EC, EMC directive.
The equipment has to be disposed of in
compliance with the WEEE Directive
2002/96/EC.
The equipment carries the mark.
The equipment complies with the standards DIN
EN 61326 Class B and DIN EN 6100-3-2.
1.4 Notes on unpacking,
transport and storage
Even if not in use, the burner are under
high pressure.
Always wear a face shield (Cat. No. 417009-
0000-000) and protective gloves with artery
protection (Cat. No. 417008-0000-000) when
you remove the HBO 50/AC L1 / L2 burner from
its packaging or when you deposit it there for
disposal (e.g. when replacing the burner).
Carry and dispose of the burner only in their
original packaging.
In transport, the burner in the microscope
illuminator is replaced by a protective fixture for
safety reasons.
Note the transport and storage temperatures
specified for the microscope stands.

1.5 Notes on use
While in operation, the burner of the
HBO 50 is under high pressure and may
only be operated with the microscope
illuminator housing being closed!
The light of the HBO 50 short-arc illuminator is
of very high intensity and contains high portions
of UV light:
Never look directly into the light beam
of the illuminator – neither with nor
without optical instruments! Non-
compliance with this safety note may
result in the risk of eye damages!
You should absolutely avoid looking
directly into the light and direct light
incidence upon the skin.
While the illuminator is on, little amounts of the
harmful ozone gas are produced by UV
radiation.
Take care that the operating room is supplied
with fresh air, or ozone is conducted into the
open air through an exhaust fan.
Only authorized and instructed personnel or
Carl Zeiss Service are allowed to replace and
align the burner following all warnings and
instructions given!
The illuminator heats up while in operation.
Do not touch the illuminator while it is on. Do
not cover the ventilation slots of the illuminator
to allow free escape of hot air.
Make sure to switch off the illuminator and
keep a cool-down period of at least 20 minutes
before taking off the illuminator. Hold the
illuminator on its cover, not on its cooling fins.
These ones could be specially hot.
Protect the HBO 50 Microscope Illuminator and
its burner from shocks and jolts as well as
humidity.
Only connect the illuminator power supply to a
power outlet with a grounding contact.
The power supply unit may only be opened by
Carl Zeiss Service or authorized specialists.
Disconnect the power cable before opening!

1.6 Notes on
care and maintenance
Proper function of the microscope illuminator
requires that only components and spares are
used that have been supplied or approved for
use by Carl Zeiss. In case of doubt, contact Carl
Zeiss Service.
Do not perform any actions on the device other
than those described in this operating manual.
We want to emphasize that actions not
described here may only be performed by
authorized persons.
Damaged equipment’s or components may only
be repaired and serviced by Carl Zeiss Service.
−Replace the burner (lamp) after the mean
lifetime
(refer to data sheet of lamp manufacturer)
has elapsed;
otherwise, there is an increased risk of
explosion!
You can read the operating time of the lamp
from the hour meter of the corresponding
power supply unit (refer to Fig. 4/2).
−To replace the burner, follow the steps
described in Section 3.3.
−When replacing the burner, check the leads
of the HBO 50.
If the housing of the microscope illuminator is
dirty, you can clean it.
Do not use a solvent for cleaning.
Immerse the cleaning cloth in a mixture of
water and a dash of a detergent, remove the
dirt and dab the housing dry with a clean cloth.
To clean the lamp power supply unit, only use a
dry, lintless cloth taking care that no dust or
other foreign bodies enter the device through
the ventilation slots.
In the case of damages (also external ones),
immediately shut down the device and have it
serviced.
1.7 Notes on disposal
The HBO 50 AC (L1 / L2) burners contain little
quantities of mercury!
Do not dispose of the burners with household
waste.
Dispose of the lamps in their original packing in
compliance with legislation.
In case of doubt, contact Carl Zeiss Service or an
OSRAM agency.
1.8 Notes on warranty
The manufacturer of the equipment is not liable
for damages caused by unauthorized
interventions, particularly those caused by the
removal or the exchange of device components
or by the use of accessory items of other
manufacturers. Unauthorized intervention will
void all warranties.

2Description
2.1 Intended use
The HBO 50 Microscope Illuminator is designed
for epifluorescence excitation with the Axiolab,
Axiostar, Axioskop, Axiovert, Axioplan,
Axiophot, Axiotron, Axio Observer, Axio Scope
and Axio Examiner microscopes.

Illuminator
The HBO 50 Microscope Illuminator consists of
the following components (Fig. 1):
−Lamp housing (1/1) with mount (1/6) (for
connection to the microscope) and
removable lamp compartment
−Permanently mounted collector
−Permanently mounted heat protection filter
(does not exist in the model for Axiovert 40)
−Permanently built-in, factory-adjusted
reflector
−Controls (1/4) for lamp adjustment in all
three space coordinates for the burner
−Mercury-vapor short-arc lamp
HBO 50 W/AC(L1 or L2)
−Connecting cable with illuminating plug (1/3)
for connection to lamp power supply
−Lamp power supply ebq 52 ac

−Before inserting the burner, make sure the
equipment has been disconnected from
line power.
−Replace the burner only if it has cooled
down; let microscope illuminator cool down
for at least 20min, otherwise there is the
risk of burns and explosion!
−Carefully tighten all respective fastening
elements; non-compliance may result in
contacting faults due to strong heat
development in use.
−Not remove or damage the cable for the
cooling element.
−Avoid fingerprints on glass components of
the burner, if necessary remove them
immediately.
−Dispose of used burner in accordance with
the legal dispositions. Observe the
producer’s notes (see chapter 1.7 – Notes
concerning the disposal)!
Procedure:
•Switch off lamp power supply.
•Disconnect power plug of microscope
illuminator from lamp power supply.
•Let microscope illuminator cool down for at
least 20 min.
•Put on face shield and protective gloves.
•If necessary, remove microscope illuminator
from microscope stand.
•Loosen lock screw of compartment (3/7) for
lamp carrier using ball-headed screwdriver
SW 3.
•Press unlatching key (3/2) of HBO 50 down.
Remove lamp compartment completely
from lamp housing (3/1) and put it
separately on the table.

•Press spring lever (3/6) of cooling element
up and pull cooling element of transport
safety device or of used burner (3/3) up and
put it cautiously on the table.
•Press spring lever (3/5) for lamp socket (3/4)
down and pull transport safety device or
burner (3/3) upwards out of lamp socket.
Let go of the spring lever.
•Press spring lever (3/5) for lamp socket (3/4)
down once more and insert burner into
lamp socket. Do not touch glass bulb of
burner. Let go of spring lever.
•Press spring lever (3/6) for cooling element
up and put cooling element on burner.
Caution: You should absolutely observe
that the cooling element rests completely on
the burner until the limit stop.
•Insert lamp compartment into lamp housing
and pull it until it clicks into place. Tighten
lock screw (3/7).
•Read and note the result of the hour meter
(power supply). After you reached the
nominal life time of 100 hours of burner,
replace it.

3.2 Starting up the ebq 50 ac
lamp power supply
Safe and reliable operation of the HBO 50
Microscope Illuminator requires that you know
the information provided by the supplied
operating instructions of the lamp power
supply ebq 50 ac.
Particularly observe the detailed safety notes.

When the device is connected to the mains,
the full operating or starting voltage is available
at its output (danger to life!).
That's why, before any work on the device or
the connected components (lamp replacement)
completely disconnect the device from line
voltage by disconnecting the power cable.
•Connect the connecting cable of the
microscope illuminator (1/3) to the lamp
connector (4/4) on the lamp power supply.
•Using power cable (1/2), connect the lamp
power supply to the power outlet.

burner

•Switch on the microscope illuminator with
the power switch (4/2) on the front panel of
the lamp power supply; the burner starts
automatically.
The HBO 50 microscope illuminator is to be
adjusted in two steps: coarse adjustment
(without adjusting aid) and subsequent fine
adjustment by means of the adjusting aid on
the microscope.

Wear UV protective eyewear in adjustment
without adjusting aid to protect the eyes from
exposure to UV radiation!
•Direct the light beam onto a projection
surface (e.g. bright wall) that is at least 3 m
away.

•Turn adjusting screw (5/1) to move the
burner axially until the brighter cathode spot
(burner) and the darker cathode spot (mirror
image of lamp) appear approximately
equally large.
•Using a ball-headed screwdriver (SW 3), turn
adjusting screws (5/2) and (5/3) to adjust
the brighter cathode spot vertically and
laterally until both cathode spots are lying
exactly side by side as shown below.

–Repeat the steps of adjustment, if
necessary, until you obtain a
satisfactory lamp image.
Adjustment with adjusting aid
•Attach the HBO 50 illuminator to the
microscope stand following the description
given in the operating manual of the
microscope.
•Pull out the adjusting aid of the upper part
of the microscope (8/1). The brighter
cathode spot of the lamp and its slightly
darker mirror image become visible on the
black-glass window of the adjusting aid.
•Then, using a ball-headed screwdriver
(SW 3), turn adjusting screw (5/1) to adjust
the cathode spot so that the cathode spot
and the mirror image of the cathode spot
are focused simultaneously.
•Using a ball-headed screwdriver (SW 3), turn
adjusting screws (5/2) and (5/3) to center
the cathode spot and its mirror image to the
centering circle of the adjusting aid.

–Make sure that the two cathode spots
of the HBO 50 illuminator do not
completely overlap in the centering
circle of the adjusting aid, but only
slightly!
–Repeat the steps of fine adjustment, if
necessary, until you obtain a
satisfactory lamp image.

4Removal of Faults
If the lamp power supply or the connected illuminator does not function, check the components using
the following troubleshooting list.
Before starting any work with the microscope illuminator or the lamp power supply, disconnect the
power cable from the power outlet.
Fault Possible cause and fault removal
Power indicator in power switch
does not light in switch position
"I".
Check fuse F2:
Disconnect power cable from device and make fuse accessible by opening
the fuse compartment. Replace the fuse. Make sure to insert a fuse of the
correct type and rating (refer to Technical Data).
Have power connector checked (by authorized persons only).
Power indicator in power switch
lights in switch position "I".
No function of hour meter.
Check fuse F 1:
Disconnect power cable from device. Make fuse accessible by opening the
voltage selector switch (4/5) by means of a screwdriver. Replace the fuse.
Make sure to insert a fuse of the correct type and rating (refer to
Technical Data).
Lamp not lighting; Power indicator

position "I", hour meter is
working.
Check the overload circuit breaker of the starter (4/6) on the rear panel of
the lamp power supply. If it was released, reset it by pressing the RESET
button of the starter.
Replace the lamp by a new one (refer to Section Inserting and replacing
the lamp).
The two following measures may only be performed by authorized
persons or Carl Zeiss Service:
Check of the safety circuit of the illuminator.
Replacement of starter.
