1INTRODUCTION
1.1 Notes on Operational Safety
MCU 2008 has been designed, produced and tested in compliance with the standard DIN EN 61010-1
(IEC 61010-1), Safety Requirements for Electrical Measuring, Control and Laboratory Instruments.
The instrument meets the requirements of the EC Directives 2006/95//EC, Low Voltage Directive, and
2004/108/EC, Electromagnetic Compatibility. It has to be disposed of in compliance with the WEEE
Directive 2002/96/EC. It is marked with the label.
This operating manual contains information and warnings that must be followed by the user.
The following warning and information symbols are used in this manual:

Particular attention must be paid to the following notes:
The MCU 2008 is not equipped with any special devices for protection from substances that are
corrosive, potentially infectiou
s, toxic, radioactive, or otherwise hazardous to health. Make sure
to observe all legal regulations, particularly the relevant national accident prevention regulations
when handling such substances.
Dust and dirt may impair the performance of the instr
ument. It must therefore be protected
against such influences as far as possible.
Opening of the instrument is only allowed to accordingly instructed specialists or service staff.
Operation of the instrument in potentially explosive areas is not allowed.
Power supply has to be disconnected before opening the instrument and changing the fuses!
See section 5.2.
Make sure to use only fuses that are in compliance with the specifications contained in the
Technical Data. The use of makeshift fuses and short-
circuiting of the fuse holders are not
permitted.
The manufacturer cannot assume any liability for any other applications, possibly also involving
individual modules or singl
e parts. This also applies to any service or repair work which is not
carried out by authorized service personnel. All claims for warranty and warranty services will be
null and void in any such case.
The power plug must be inserted in an outlet featur
ing a grounding contact. The grounding
effect must not be made ineffective by an extension cable that does not have a protective
ground wire.
If any protective measures are found to be no longer effective, the instrument must be
switched off and safegu
arded against inadvertent operation. For repair of the instrument,
please contact a Zeiss service agency or the Carl Zeiss Microscopy Service.
Clogged or covered ventilation slats may lead to heat build-
up that might damage the
instrument and, in extre
me cases, cause a fire. Always keep the ventilation slats clear and make
sure that no objects enter the instrument through the ventilation slats.
Defective controls must not be disposed of with household waste; they have to be disposed of
in compliance with the relevant legal provisions.
Samples have also to be disposed of properly according to the applicable legal provisions and
internal work instructions.

The instrument may only be operated by trained personnel who must be aware of the possible
dangers inherent in the operation of the MCU 2008. The MCU
2008 combined with the DC
scanning stage is a high-
precision instrument, which can be impaired in its performance or
damaged when handled improperly.
Don't reach into the possible range of travel of the motorized DC stage.
There is a crush hazard and hands may be injured when positioning the stage by means of the
MCU 2008 controller.
The MCU 2008 can be used for voltages ranging from 100 to 240 V ±10 %, 50 to 60 Hz,
without any necessity of additional change of instrument voltage setting.

1.3 Notes on Warranty
The manufacturer guarantees that the instrument is free from material and production defects when
delivered. Defects must be notified immediately on identification and maximum efforts must be
undertaken in order to keep the damage as small as possible. On receiving notice of such a defect, the
manufacturer will be under obligation to remove it, at his own option, either by providing adequate
repair services or by delivering a faultless product for replacement. No warranty is given for defects
caused by natural wear (wearing parts in particular) and improper use.
The manufacturer is not liable for damage resulting from faulty operation, negligence, or any other
meddling with the instrument, particularly the removal or replacement of instrument components or the
use of accessories from other manufacturers. Any such case will void the user’s warranty claims.
Except for action which is explicitly described in this operating manual, no maintenance or repair work
may be performed. Repairs may only be carried out by Carl Zeiss service staff or specifically authorized
persons. Should any malfunction occur, please get in touch with the Carl Zeiss microscopy service in
Germany (see page 16) or your local Carl Zeiss agency.

2.1 Name and Intended Use
Product name: MCU 2008
Intended use:
The stage controller MCU 2008 (432929-9000) is a two-axis controller for XY scanning stages equipped
with direct current motors (d.c. motors).
The MCU 2008 supersedes the MCU 28.
2.2 Usable Stages
Only DC scanning stages tested by Carl Zeiss Micro Imaging GmbH are allowed to be used. All DC stages
operated by the customer in combination with the MCU 28 will also run with the new controller.

2.3 Scope of Delivery
The delivery comprises the controller, a USB cable, a CAN cable and a country-specific power cable.
A joystick (432903-9902) can be acquired optionally.

2.5 Functional Description
The MCU 2008 is a 2-axis motor controller for DC scanning stages equipped with a disk encoder on the
motor axis.
The joystick (432903-9902) can be acquired to be used as operating element.
The controller is provided with two CAN bus ports and a USB port.
The MCU 2008 offers two speed ranges: slow and fast.
The changeover switch integrated in the optional
joystick (432903-9902) is used to set the speed
mode desired.
Within the speed range set, the extent of
displacement of the joystick determines the speed
of the stage used.
The stage may be operated alternatively by means
of the AxioVision software. Please see the relevant
software operating manual.
The controller is a CAN component. Two CAN ports with equality of access are available. If the MCU
2008 is used for stage control in combination with the motorized microscopes Axio Imager and
Axio Observer, it can be connected directly to the microscope. In this case, the travelling speed of the
stage can be adjusted separately for each objective. Please see the operating manuals of the
corresponding microscopes.
The USB port allows direct operation of the stage controller via the control computer of the microscope
system used. In this way, the MCU 2008 may also be used for manual microscopes.

•Connect the axis cables of the scanning stage to the relevant controller inputs (3-1/2, 3).
•Connect the cable of the joystick (optional) to the relevant input (3-1/4).
•Connect the CAN (3-1/6) or the USB connection cable (3-1/5), if used, to the relevant controller
inputs.
•Connect the power cable to the controller (3-1/1) and a suitable power outlet.

4OPERATION
4.1 Switching on / off
•Use the on/off switch (4-1/1) at the front of the
unit to turn the controller ON and OFF,
respectively.
4.2 Moving a Sample by means of the Optional Joystick
Don't reach into the possible range of travel of the motorized DC stage.
There is a crush hazard and hands may be injured when positioning the stage by means of the
MCU 2008 controller.
•Move the operator lever (4-2/2) of the joystick
in the direction in which the stage shall travel.
The wider the lever is displaced, the faster the
stage will travel.
•Press the switchover knob (4-2/1) integrated in
the operator level in order to change the speed
mode "slow" or "fast".
If the MCU 2008 is run in connection with the
motorized microscope Axio Imager or
Axio Observer, it is possible to set for each
objective separately a factor for individual adap-
tation of the speed ranges "slow" and "fast",
using the TFT display of the respective microscope
or the configuration program MTB 2004.
Please refer also to the operating manuals of the
microscope used and the MTB 2004, respectively.

5.1 Maintenance
Before cleaning the MCU 2008 it is imperative to disconnect the power plug.
•The MCU 2008 must be cleaned using a slightly moistened, not dripping cloth.
No moisture must get into the instrument.
5.2 Fuse Change
Before changing the fuses it is
imperative to disconnect the power
plug.
The fuse holder is located on the back of the
MCU 2008.
In the event of a fuse failure, first the cause must
be identified and the technical defect, if any, must
be eliminated.
•Disconnect the power plug.
•Pull the fuse holder (Fig. 5-1/1) frontward out of
the fuse compartment.
•Replace the defective fuse T 2.0 A/H.
•Push the fuse holder back into the fuse
compartment until it snaps into place.
•Reconnect the power plug.

5.3 Service
All repairs of mechanical, optical or electronic components inside the units may only be performed by
service staff or specially authorized personnel.
