Sediment: Can damage plumbing and appliances over time. It includes rust particles that
can cause brown, yellow or orange spots on clothing, fixtures and toilets.
Taste/Odor: Chlorine is used by water treatment plants to kill harmful bacteria and
organisms. Chlorine has a recognizable taste and odor that can be unpleasant.
Cysts: Encapsulated forms of certain single cell parasites like oocysts of Cryptosporidium
that may be present in drinking water and resistant to normal chlorination.
Hardness/Scale: Scale can cause water to fail to generate a lather with soap, and can build-up on and create the failure
of heating elements, piping, valves, solenoids and more. This is caused by the presence of calcium and magnesium ions.
Lead: Water is naturally a solvent and can leach lead and other heavy metals from brass taps and plumbing fittings.
Lead may be present in pipes and the solder used to connect pipes.
Chemicals/VOCs: Contaminants resulting from pesticide runoff and gasoline leakage into ground water (VOCs —
Volatile Organic Chemicals).
