Product Warranty (2 years)
Advantech warrants to you, the original purchaser, that each of its products will be
free from defects in materials and workmanship for two years from the date of pur-
chase.
This warranty does not apply to any products which have been repaired or altered by
persons other than repair personnel authorized by Advantech, or which have been
subject to misuse, abuse, accident or improper installation. Advantech assumes no
liability under the terms of this warranty as a consequence of such events.
Because of Advantech’s high quality-control standards and rigorous testing, most of
our customers never need to use our repair service. If an Advantech product is defec-
tive, it will be repaired or replaced at no charge during the warranty period. For out-
of-warranty repairs, you will be billed according to the cost of replacement materials,
service time and freight. Please consult your dealer for more details.
If you think you have a defective product, follow these steps:
1. Collect all the information about the problem encountered. (For example, CPU
speed, Advantech products used, other hardware and software used, etc.) Note
anything abnormal and list any onscreen messages you get when the problem
occurs.
2. Call your dealer and describe the problem. Please have your manual, product,
and any helpful information readily available.
3. If your product is diagnosed as defective, obtain an RMA (return merchandize
authorization) number from your dealer. This allows us to process your return
more quickly.
4. Carefully pack the defective product, a fully-completed Repair and Replacement
Order Card and a photocopy proof of purchase date (such as your sales receipt)
in a shippable container. A product returned without proof of the purchase date
is not eligible for warranty service.
5. Write the RMA number visibly on the outside of the package and ship it prepaid
to your dealer.

In the user manual of the end product, the end user has to be informed to keep at
least 20cm separation with the antenna while this end product is installed and oper-
ated. The end user has to be informed that the FCC radio-frequency exposure guide-
lines for an uncontrolled environment can be satisfied.
The end user has to also be informed that any changes or modifications not
expressly approved by the manufacturer could void the user's authority to operate
this equipment.

2. Keep this User Manual for later reference.
3. Disconnect this equipment from any AC outlet before cleaning. Use a damp
cloth. Do not use liquid or spray detergents for cleaning.
4. For plug-in equipment, the power outlet socket must be located near the equip-
ment and must be easily accessible.
5. Keep this equipment away from humidity.
6. Put this equipment on a reliable surface during installation. Dropping it or letting
it fall may cause damage.
7. The openings on the enclosure are for air convection. Protect the equipment
from overheating. DO NOT COVER THE OPENINGS.
8. Make sure the voltage of the power source is correct before connecting the
equipment to the power outlet.
9. Position the power cord so that people cannot step on it. Do not place anything
over the power cord.
10. All cautions and warnings on the equipment should be noted.
11. If the equipment is not used for a long time, disconnect it from the power source
to avoid damage by transient overvoltage.
12. Never pour any liquid into an opening. This may cause fire or electrical shock.
13. Never open the equipment. For safety reasons, the equipment should be
opened only by qualified service personnel.
14. If one of the following situations arises, get the equipment checked by service
personnel:
The power cord or plug is damaged.
Liquid has penetrated into the equipment.
The equipment has been exposed to moisture.
The equipment does not work well, or you cannot get it to work according to
the user's manual.
The equipment has been dropped and damaged.
The equipment has obvious signs of breakage.
15. Danger of explosion if battery is incorrectly replaced. Replace only with same or
equivalent type recommended by the manufacture. Discard used batteries
according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

1.1 Introduction
EPD-023 is the ePaper device which support ultra low power 2.4GHz RF wireless
protocol integrated with 2.9” EPD in ARM Cortex-M3 processor. The device can sup-
port hospital, pharmacy, factory, warehouse and retail application. With optimization
on the power consumption and device management, your applications with low data
rate requirement can be achieved years battery lifetime and thousand devices con-
nection. Advantech EPD-023 provide multi interface for application control which is
highly integrated with EPD driver and low power consumption system. EPD-023 can
auto join and binding the network group with IoT Gateway (WISE-3610Z) and Router
(WISE-3240). Data can be quickly and easily acquired and transformed into a differ-
ent format to communicate with ePaper Manager Server (ARK-2250L). System inte-
gration and application provider can focus on application development and system
management.

1.3 System implementation
EPD device can be apply to different application and system integrator can control
the RESTful API to build up different scenario
1.3.1 Advantech EPD-023 & ePaper Manager Solution
Wireless EPD System consists of ePaper Manager, Gateway, Router and EPD
device.
The ePaper manager on ARK2250L provide Web GUI to management the wire-
less EPD system.
The Gateway (WISE-3610Z) are responsible for communication between ePa-
per manager and EPD device.
The Router (built-in WISE-3610Z) can extend wireless range of Gateway.
The EPD device is a device with ePaper, EPD controller and wireless connectiv-
ity.
Advantech provide the total solution for development to select the different architec-
ture according to the end customer’s system requirement.
From below system architecture, EPD-023 is at the end node of the system. Devel-
oper can apply Advantech WISE-3610Z /3240 to connect to ePaper manager which
installed in Advantech Embedded Computer /ARK2250L. There are multi-function
RESTful API open on ePaper Manager for developer to integration with vertical mar-
ket application. E.g. Retail, smart warehouse, factory, hospital and transportation.

1. Image need to set as 296 x 128 pixels, do not resize it after com-
plete the image which will cause toothing border

2.2.1 ePaper Manager
GUI to operate the system, EPD device and gateway.
Through RESTFul API, the external system can operate the whole system as
below list:
1.ePaper manager can perform WISE Gateway actions and control WISE Gate-
way.
2.ePaper manager can perform WISE Router actions and control WISE Router.
3.ePaper manager can perform EPD device actions and control EPD series
device.
4.ePaper manager can import EPD device list which can be the white list to join
the network.
5.ePapaer manager can deliver the image/Firmware to EPD device through
WISE Gateway.
6.Device can periodical report status back to ePaper manager.
2.2.2 WISE Gateway (WISE-3610Z)

2.4 EPD System-Initial Flow in Device side
This section will explain how the end device to join, register and communicate with
the gateway and router. User may know and understand what performance can be
reach in our specification. Indeed, user may change some parameter to fit their user
scenario.
2.4.1 Tag Scan for Router
Initial scan: EPD device scan each available channel. If EPD device still can’t
find the router after 2 mins, it will change the status to “lost connect”.
Reconfirm scan: The EPD device will start scan channel to look for another
router every 2 mins. If EPD device still can’t find the router after 5 times, it will
change Scan channel frequency from 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 64, 64, 64……mins.
And then the device will move to deep sleep mode after scanning for 5 days.
Stop scan and deep sleep: If EPD device still can’t find the router finally, it will
stop RF Scanning and back to deep sleep until the button of the Tag has been
pressed. Then tag will start the scanning from the beginning.
Note! The performance will be adjusted according the environmental limita-
tion.

2.4.2 Registration

2.4.3 Status report
Router (WISE-3610Z or WIS-3240) will report status every 1 mins
EPD device will report status every 1 mins
2.4.4 Execute actions Cmd
Router will receive action command from gateway in real-time .
EPD device send data request every 20 secs from sleep mode to router to
check if there is any action command.
EPD device will send back the ACK turn result if the action command is exe-
cuted.
2.4.5 Firmware update
WISE-1840 network control card in Router will receive FW upgrade command
from router in real-time and execute automatically. System will reboot after FW
upgrade complete.
EPD device send data request every 20 secs from sleep mode to router to
check if there is any action command. EPD device receive FW upgrade com-
mand if there is FW upgrade action. After upgrade, EPD device will re-register
network.
2.5 White List mechanism
Before import white list, user need to setup router channel which can provide optimal
performance. User can setup the channel from ePaper manager and the router chan-
nel is from channel: 11 13 14 15 20 21 22 23 24 25 26. If channel has not been set,
all the router will be set in the default channel 15.
(1). When user receive all goods, it comes with the EPD device list which is white list.
User need to import the list from ePaper manager.
(2).ePaper manager can dispatch the list to the connected system daemon in Gate-
way.
(3) EPD device can auto join the network after the white list properly setup in ePaper
manager and Gateway.
Note! Normally, deployed people need to detect what channel of 2.4G wi-fi
has been used in the application field. we need to avoid to use the same
channel distribution.

2.6 Secure key mechanism
Advantech EPD-023 provides user to change secure key when data exchange
between devices. User can setup the new secure key from ePaper manager and the
gateway will start pass the new key to connected device. As long as the key has
been changed, the device could not been operated in original system which has the
different secure key in setting.
