Thebenetsofradar-videofusionaremoreaccuratedetectionsandclassications,andlessfalseandmissedalarms.Thefusion
ofthetwotechnologiescomestogetherinAXISObjectAnalytics,whichisthemaininterfaceusedtoaccessandcongurethe
radar-videofusion.
AXISQ656-DLEdetectsandclassiesobjectsinwideareaswithdepth,andyoucanuseitforareamonitoringorroadmonitoring.
Additionally,AXISQ656-DLEworkswellinasitedesigncombinedwithotherdevices.Sincethedetectionrangeoftheradaris
largerthantheeldofviewofthecamerainAXISQ656-DLE,combineitwithPTZcameraswithIRilluminationtoachieve
visualconrmationintheentiredetectionrangeoftheradar.Orcombineitwiththermalcameras,whichcandetectandclassify
objectsinlongandnarrowareas.
Anexampleofaconstructionsitewithtwostand-aloneradarsthatcovertheopenareasofthesiteandfourradar-videofusion
camerasthatcoverthemorecomplexopenareas.Additionally,fourthermalcamerascoverthenarrowcorridorsalongthefence.
Whyfusion
Usedontheirown,videoandradarbothhavetheirownstrengthsandlimitations:
•Thevideotypicallyprovidesmoreaccurateclassicationswhenthereissufcientcontrastandwhentheobjectis
movingclosetothecamera.Itwillalsoprovidemoregranularclassicationsthantheradar.However,acameraneeds
goodlightingconditionstosee.
•Theradarontheotherhandcandetectobjectseveninchallenginglightingconditions,anditsdetectionandclassication
rangeislonger.Regardlessoftheweatherconditions,theradarcanmeasurethespeedofamovingobject,aswellasits
directionandthedistancetoit.However,thelackofvisualconrmationcanmaketheradarclassicationsmorefragile.
Swayingobjectsandreectivesurfacescantriggerfalsealarmsandmustbetakenintoconsiderationwhendesigning
thesiteandconguringtheradar.
Thetwotechnologiesintheradar-videofusioncameracanofcoursebeusedontheirownbutaremorepowerfulwhentheanalytics
frombothtechnologiesinteracttoprovidemorereliabledetectionsandclassications.

Thisproductfusestheradardatawiththevideodataintwoways:
•Visualfusion:Theradardetectionsandclassicationsarefusedintothevideoimage.Thisisawaytovisualizetheradar
datainthevideostreamwhenthevideoanalyticsisn’tavailable.
Forexample,ifanobjectappearsatadistanceof50m(64ft),itmaybetoosmallforthevideoanalyticstodetect,
buttheradarcanidentifyit.Inthatcase,theradardetectionisfusedintotheimageplaneandcanbeusedtotrigger
alarmsinsideAXISObjectAnalytics.
•Analyticsfusion:Theradardetectionsandclassicationsarefusedwiththedetectionsandclassicationsfromthevideo
analytics.Thisgivesthedeviceacombinedanalyticsoutputwheretherespectivestrengthsofbothtechnologiesare
merged.Itusesthedistanceandspeedfromtheradar,andthepositionandclassfromthevideo.
Whentheobjectintheexampleabovecomescloser,thevideoanalyticsalsodetectsit.Theradardetectionisthenfused
withthevideoanalyticsoutputtoproduceanoutputofhigherquality,andwithmoreinformation,thanwhatthe
technologiescanprovideseparately.

causereectionsthataffecttheabilityoftheradartoperformclassications.Thiscanleadtoghosttracksandfalsealarmsin

Mountingposition
Installtheproductonastablepoleoraspotonawallwheretherearenootherobjectsorinstallations.Objectswithinm(3ft)to
theleftandrightoftheproduct,thatreectradiowaves,affecttheperformanceoftheradarinAXISQ656-DLE.
Ifyouinstalltheproductonawall,itneedstopointawayfromthewallatleast5°.
Additionally,themountingheightaffectsthedetectiondistanceandrangeofboththevideoandtheradar.
Tiltangle
Theproductmustbesufcientlyorientedtowardsthegroundsothatthecenteroftheimageisbelowthehorizon.Therecommended
mountingtiltis5–45°.

Rollangle

AXISQ656-DLEoperatesonthe60GHzfrequencyband.Youcaninstalluptoeightradarsorradar-videofusioncamerasoperating
onthe60GHzfrequencybandclosetoeachother,orfacingeachother,withoutcausingproblems.Thebuilt-incoexistencealgorithm
canndasuitabletimeslotandfrequencychannelthatwillminimizeinterference.
Ifaninstallationcontainsmorethaneightradardevicesoperatingonthesamefrequencyband,andmanyofthedevicesarepointing
awayfromeachother,thereislessriskofinterference.Ingeneral,radarinterferencewillnotcausetheradartostopfunctioning.
Thereisabuilt-ininterferencemitigationalgorithmthattriestorepairtheradarsignalevenwheninterferenceispresent.Awarning
aboutinterferenceisexpectedtohappeninanenvironmentwithmanyradarsoperatingonthesamefrequencybandinthesame
coexistencezone.Themainimpactofinterferenceisdeteriorationofthedetectionperformance,andoccasionalghosttracks.

Environment
Therearealsootherdesignfactorstoconsiderwhenplacingmultipleradarsandradar-videofusioncamerasinasite,likethe
surroundingenvironment,swayingobjects,agpoles,andswayingvegetation.Insomecasesyouneedtolteroutswaying
objectsfromtheradarstreamtoavoidfalsealarms.

TheradarinAXISQ656-DLEhasahorizontaleldofdetectionof95°.Thedetectionrangeoftheradardependsonfactorslikethe
scene,themountingheightandtiltangleoftheproduct,andthesizeandspeedofthemovingobjects.

Areadetectionrange
Thedetectionrangeisthedistancewithinwhichanobjectcanbetrackedandcantriggeranalarm.It’smeasuredfromanear
detectionlimit(howclosetothedeviceadetectioncanbemade)toafardetectionlimit(howfarfromthedeviceadetection
canbemade).
Theareamonitoringproleisoptimizedforhumandetection,however,itwillalsoallowyoutotrackvehiclesandotherobjects
movingatupto55km/h(34mph)withavelocityaccuracyof+/-2km/h(.25mph).

Theanalyticsfusionzone,whichisthezoneinwhereanobjectcanbedetectedandclassiedbybothtechnologies,depends

Oncetheradar-videofusioncamerahasbeeninstalled,theradarcoverageisxed.Theeldofviewofthecamera,however,
dependsonthezoomlevelofthelens.
Tovisualizethecamera’seldofviewinrelationtotheradarcoverage,therearetwogreenlinesintheradarstreamthatrepresent
theapproximateeldofviewofthecamera.Thelineswilladjustwhenthecamerazoomsinorout.Additionally,therearetwo
dottedlinesthatrepresenttheapproximateareainwhichthecameracansee.Thedottedlineclosertothedevicerepresentthe
neardetectionlimit,whiletheonefartherawayrepresentsthefardetectionlimit.
Thesolidgreenlinesrepresenttheapproximateeldofviewofthecamera,whilethedottedgreenlines
representtheapproximatenearandfardetectionlimits.

ThesizeoftheanalyticsfusionzoneisaffectedbythezoomlevelofthelensinAXISQ656-DLE.Thetwoextremesofthezoomlevel

WhenthelensinAXISQ656-DLEiszoomedoutmaximally,objectscangettoosmalltodetectforthevideoanalytics.Inthis
scenario,it'slikelythatobjectswillbedetectedbytheradarwithitswidecoverage,butnotbythevideoanalytics.Ifyouwantto
establishvisualconrmationintheentiredetectionrangeoftheradar,youcanpairAXISQ656-DLEwithoneormorePTZcameras.

Lenszoomedin(maxtele)
Whenthelensiszoomedinmaximally,itwilllimitthecamera’seldofviewsignicantly.However,sinceobjectsfarawayare
magniedcomparedtowhenthelensiszoomedoutmaximally,itmeanstheobjectscanbedetectedbythevideoanalytics
atamuchlargerdistancefromthedevice.Inthisscenario,it’spossiblethatobjectswillbedetectedbythevideoanalyticsbut
notbytheradaranalytics.
Tomaximizethechanceofaccuratelyclassifyinganobjectbyboththeradarandthevideoanalytics,adjustthezoom–ifpossible–
sothatobjectsintheareaofinterestarelargeenoughforthevideoanalyticstodetectthem.
Radar-videodetectionsandclassications
SinceAXISQ656-DLEcandetectandclassifyobjectsusingradarandvideo—orjustoneofthetechnologies—thereareseveral
thingstobeawareof.
•Iftwopeoplearewalkingclosetogetherandaredetectedbytheradar,butnotthevideoanalytics,theywillbeclassied
asonepersonandonlyoneboundingboxwillsurroundthem.Whentheyentertheanalyticsfusionzoneandvisual
conrmationisachieved,theywillbeaccuratelyclassied.ThespatialdifferentiationoftheradarinAXISQ656-DLEis
3m(9ft).
•Ifanobjectisoutsidethecamera'seldofview,AXISQ656-DLEcan'tfuseanydetectionsorclassicationsintothe
imageplane.ThismeansthatAXISObjectAnalyticscan'ttriggeranalarm.Totriggeranalarmwhenanobjectisdetected
bytheradaronly,congureascenariointheradar’swebinterfaceanduseconditionstotriggeronmotionwithin
theradarscenario.
•Theexcludezonesyouaddintheradar’swebinterfaceareglobal,whichmeansthatanymotiondetectedinthesezones
willalwaysbeignored–eveniftheexcludezoneoverlapswiththeanalyticsfusionzoneinAXISObjectAnalytics.The
excludezonesyouaddinAXISObjectAnalytics,however,willonlyignoremotioninAXISObjectAnalyticsscenarios.

camerasside-by-side,werecommendplacingthemwith00m(330ft)spacingbetweeneachpair,asshownintheexample.

Coveranopeneldaroundabuilding
Acompanyinanofcebuildingneedstosecurethepremisesfromintrusionandvandalism,particularlyafterworkinghours,on
weekendsandonpublicholidays.Tocovertheareaaroundthebuilding,theyinstallacombinationofradar-videofusioncamerasand
PTZcameras.Theyconguretheradar-videofusioncamerastotriggeranalarmwhenhumansandvehiclesapproachthebuilding.To
getasreliabledetectionsandclassicationsaspossible,theyselectadetectionsensitivityinAXISObjectAnalyticssuitableforthe
area.Formoreinformationaboutdetectionsensitivity,seeSelectdetectionsensitivityonpage2.
Tomakesuretheygetvisualconrmationofpotentialintrudersintheentiredetectionrangeoftheradar,theyaddtwoPTZcameras
withbuilt-inIRontheoppositecornersofthebuilding.TheradarssteerthePTZcamerasthroughAXISRadarAutotrackingforPTZ,
andthebuilt-inIRalsoprovidesmorelightfortheradar-videofusioncameras,whichmakesitpossibletodetectandidentify
intrudersonagreaterdistance.

Awarehousethatnormallykeepsgoodsonthepremisesissurroundedbyafencetokeepintrudersaway.Todetectpotential
trespassers,theyinstallacombinationofradar-videofusioncamerasandPTZcameraswithbuilt-inIRtosecurethepremises.The
radar-videofusioncamerasprovidereliabledetectionsandtriggeralarms,whilethePTZcamerasextendthevisualcoverage.The
PTZcamerasbuilt-inIRalsoprovidesmorelightfortheradar-videofusioncameras,whichmakesitpossibletodetectandidentify
intrudersonagreaterdistance.
Inthisscene,theareaoutsidethefenceisnotcoveredsinceit’sabusyareathatcantriggerfalsealarms.Insceneswithlessactivity,
theareaoutsidethefencecouldbecoveredaswell.Insuchascene,itwouldbepossibletocongurethecamerastotriggerexternal
lightswhenmovementisdetectedoutsidethefencetodeterpotentialintruders.Theycouldalsotriggeranalarmwhenintrudersare
actuallydetectedinsidethefence.Tobeabletodetectmovementoutsidethefence,thecamerasneedtobemountedhighenough.

classicationsofpotentialtrespassers.
It’spossibletoplaceradar-videofusioncamerasfacingeachotherinthiswaywithoutinterferencebetweentheradars.However,to
makesurethevideotechnologycanprovideaccuratedetectionsandclassications,goodlightingconditionsarerequired.

Theloadingbayofacommercialbuildingissurroundedbyafencetoprotectthepremises.Foradditionalsecurity,thecompany
installsathermalcameraandthreeradar-videofusioncamerasonthesite.Todetectpotentialtrespassers,theyinstallathermal
cameraalongthefence.Todetectintrudersthathavemanagedtopassthefence,theyinstalltwooftheradar-videofusioncameras
onapolefacingtheloadingdocks.Thesecameraswillbeabletodetectandclassifyhumansandvehiclesmovingaroundthedocks
andcantriggeranalarmafterworkinghours.Todetectanyintruderscomingthroughtheareawiththeturningpointontheright
side,theyinstallanadditionalradar-videofusioncamerafacingthearea.Finally,thethermalcameracanalsohelptodetect
tamperingattemptsofthetwocamerasinstalledclosetothefence.

Whenmonitoringroadsandhighways,makesuretomounttheradar-videofusioncameraatasufcientheighttoavoidblindspots
(radarshadow)behindthevehicles.
Note
Thesizeoftheradarshadowdependsontheradar-videofusioncamera’smountingheightandthevehicles’heightand
distancefromtheradar.Forexample,whenavehiclewithaheightof4.5m(5ft)is50m(64ft)awayfromaradar-video
fusioncamerasthatismountedataheightof8m(26ft),theradarshadowbehindthevehiclewillbe50m(64ft).
However,iftheradar-videofusioncameraismountedataheightof2m(39ft),theshadowbehindthesamevehicle
willonlybe23m(74ft).

Tomonitorvehiclestravellingalongaroadyoucanmounttheradar-videofusioncameraonthesideoftheroad,forexampleona
pole.Inthistypeofinstallation,werecommendapanangleofmax25°.
