1 Introduction
Praesideo is a public address system that meets the requirements instituted by different authorities on a public
address emergency system and evacuation sound system. The processing and communication of audio and
control data is entirely in the digital domain.
The exact layout and contents of your Praesideo system depends on the purpose for which you want to use it
and the physical location in which it is installed. The system has a modular equipment approach, which means
that it is possible to add additional functionality any time by adding equipment. The main Praesideo range
consists of the following pieces of equipment and software:

3 Service Policy and Internet & Extranet information
3.1 Praesideo Service Policy
All Praesideo type numbers have a manufacturer warranty of 3 years.
Bosch ST guarantees a service period of at least 5 years after the product reaches its commercial End of Life.
In this service period, spare parts or the possibility to have each unit repaired is available.
If the End of Service period is reached or a situation occurs that the service lifetime should be extended, then
the installer or local service provider should select spare parts (before End of life) or replacement units (before
End of service). Note that previous mentioned extended service period is not a manufacturer responsibility.
Praesideo units can be repaired centrally via Solectron (previous MDB) or with the spare parts as mentioned
in this document.
The spare parts mentioned in this document are available at SLB.
The equipment should only be serviced by Bosch trained and qualified people.
More information about the service policy can be found in the Praesideo Service marketing plan.

3.2 Repair Policy
In case of a defect unit, contact Solectron via the regular RMA procedure or repair the unit according the
repair instructions in this document and with the available spare parts.
Due to the throughput time of repairs via Solectron, it’s advisable to arrange a local solution with the service
partners. For example: keep an extra Network controller or Power amplifier at the supplier or installer.
And if the application requires it (emergency or local fire department demands), keep an extra Network
controller and Power amplifier on site.
Important: In case of a defective unit always mention the fault of the unit on the RMA. In the
diagnose page (see also chapter 9) you will find a fault description of that unit which you can write
down.
3.3 Service Manual users
The Service manual is intended for those who need more information on solving a problem in a Praesideo
system than the user manual offers. Regular users are Bosch service partners and Praesideo service providers.

3.6 Problem information form
This document helps your local Bosch contact person, local service partner and Bosch Support people with
solving your problem with a Praesideo system. (See chapter 13)
3.7 Preventive Maintenance
The preventive maintenance intervention of the Praesideo system depends on the ambient conditions. All
power amplifiers have fans which blow ambient dust to the PCB’s this raises the intervention times.
•Vacuum cleaning of the power amplifier every +/- 2 years (depending on the ambient dust)
•When used, vacuum clean the rack mounting filters of the cooling fans +/- 2 years (depending on the
ambient dust)
•Replace after +/- 8 years the battery on the main PCB of the Network Controller.
Used type: Coin CR2032 3V 220mAH
Caution: This exchange should be done with the unit under power, as otherwise
settings are lost. Beware of the risk of an electric shock. See also chapter 8.5.3
•Prevent or remove animal nests (mice and rats can eat the cabling)
•The fibres of the POF (plastic optical cable) can be cleaned with isopropanol or cleaning alcohol.
3.8 Praesideo Lifetime
The calculated lifetime of the Praesideo range is based on manufactures specification of the weakest
component in every unit.
This lifetime depends strongly on the ambient temperature where the Praesideo equipment is installed.
If a limited service lifetime is a requirement, the following relation with ambient temperature needs to be
considered:
A rule of thumb, for every 10 °C less ambient temperature, the lifetime of the unit doubles.
All Praesideo units (Power Amplifiers excluded): 100.000 Hours (11.4 years) lifetime at 45 °C
Praesideo Power Amplifiers: 64.000 Hours (7.5 years) lifetime at 45 °C
For rack-mounted units the temperature in the rack needs to be considered as ambient temperature.
When for example a service lifetime of 15 years needs to be provided, two things can be done:
1. Make sure that the ambient temperature is kept below the indicated temperature for the required
lifetime. (See Figure 1. The vertical marker shows at which ambient temperature the lifetime is expected
to be 15 years)
2. Calculated intervals for replacement of the units. For Ambient temperatures higher than what is
needed for the required lifetime, indicate the replacement period for system components.
(See Figure 1. For example if the ambient temperature is 45°C, than before 7.5 year the Power
Amplifiers need to be exchanged).

4 Remote access to the Network controller
To prevent travelling remote access to the network controller is a nice feature.
In the Praesideo Application Note “Remote access to the Network Controller” is described how to connect a
LAN modem via your regular telephone line. With this application you are able to remotely change settings,
download software and the possibility to look in the diagnose page at the fault events. In this way you know,
for example, that you should bring another call station to the customer.
From software version 2.0 it’s possible to reset the system from the configuration page

All leds on or blinking could indicate faulty download or defect to the call station caused by hot wiring,
removing of the extension.
7.4 LED indication Call station keypad
There is no error indication on the call station extension keypad.
When a problem occurs try to exchange it with another keypad. In this way configuration problems can be
avoided.
The Call station keypads have an address setting. Always check for the correct address.

8 Fault finding
8.1 General fault solving information
Always check the “Instructions for Use” first for correct operating of the unit, as many faults are
software setting related or incorrect execution of the application.
This manual can be found on the CD-ROM delivered with the Network Controller.
If a fault occurs on the Praesideo system the yellow LED starts blinking on the call station. The event of the
fault will be reported in the diagnose page.
The yellow blinking LED can be stopped by solving the mentioned fault in the diagnose page and making an
“acknowledgement” and “reset”. You can also program these functions on the call station extension or input
contact. From Software 2.1 it’s possible to program that the blinking will stop after an Acknowledgement of
the fault.
From SW version x are faults events shown also shown in the display.
The following fault events need an acknowledge and reset to be removed from display;
Other fault events dissolve from the NCO’s display when they are solved and the NCO is reseted or when the
fault is manually ack and reseted
8.2 Strange System behavior
When the Praesideo system behaves in an unexpected way and you have solved all fault events in the
diagnostic page, the following steps can be checked;
•Configuration file for correct configuration;
oCorrect serial numbers
oEnabling of the used units
oCorrectness of the message names
•If every unit contains the same software version. (Software version of each unit connected to the NCO
is mentioned from version 2.1 in upgrade unit software in the configuration program)
If this didn’t help, be sure the system has the latest Software version.
A final solution could be deleting the configuration file, connect and program a part of the system and expand
it until you experience the same strange behavior. At that moment you know which units could cause the
problem. (See chapter 10)
8.3 General Faults
8.3.1 2 messages can be played instead of 4
•Check in the configuration if 2 messages with the same priority are going to the same zone.
•Make sure the used software is 1.1 or higher and the Network controller’s hardware is 15.00 or
higher. (WK0321)
8.3.2 BGM can’t be heard after upgrading the software to 2.1
•Make sure the BGM source is set to “toggle” (In previous software versions “momentary was
used)
•Select first the Source than the zones (In previous versions you first selected the zones than the
source)
1. Spikes audiable when a fiber interface is used.
•Make sure the glass fiber pins are connected far enough inside the connector.

8.4 Download problems
8.4.1 Download fails from PC to NCO
If the unit indicates after a download, Bosch ST (or Philips in SW versions 1.3 or lower) or nothing in display,
the following steps needs to be taken;
•Disconnect all POF cables form the unit and switch it off/on, check the result.
•If you’re able to access the NCO via the FTP program, try to make the download again.
•If you don’t have access, check the settings with the hyper terminal program (Chapter 12)
•Open the unit and set dill switch 1(software version 2.0 or lower, set dill switch 2) on in the main
PCB. Switch the unit OFF and ON and make the download of the MMU.bit and the MIF.bit via
the file transfer application. Switch the unit OFF set the dill switch back, switch the unit ON and
make the whole download again.
8.4.2 Download fails from NCO to an other unit
When a download from NCO to another unit is failed, the following steps needs to be taken;
1. Try to do the download again.
2. Refresh the internet explorer page.
3. Switch the unit off, disconnect all cables and switch the unit on.
4. If the serial number of that unit is missing, look in “undefined” and make the download again.
5. If the serial number is also missing in undefined try the following action;
•Place on the main PCB, for example the Network Controller, a jumper on X211.
(X117 on the Network board of the Power Amplifier, X40 on the LBB4428. The in/out put
board needs to be removed)
•Make a reset via S2. (S1 on the LBB4428)
•Make again the download
•power off the unit and remove the jumper.
8.4.2.1 Download of a new unit to a software version < 2..0
Units manufactured from week 3 in 2005 can’t be downloaded with a software version lower than 2.0
Incase of an expansion of a system using a software version lower than 2.0 the system needs to be upgraded.
8.5 Network Controller related problems
8.5.1 NCO: TCP/IP settings in Display show “n.a”:
•Disconnect the POF cables, reset the NCO via the mains switch, wait a minute and switch the unit on.
If the settings are not resolved follow the HyperTerminal document (chapter 19) to check and resolve
the settings. (See also 8.5.3)
8.5.2 NCO: No access to the NCO via File transfer application;
See the Instructions For Use for the correct Computer settings.
•Use the “ping” command to check if you have contact with the NCO.
Via the windows (left bottom page) “start” select “run” and fill in “cmd”.
Press ok. (Now you see the dos prompt) fill in “ping and the ip address of the NCO.
For example “ping 190.147.128.37”
If you receive a “time out” message replace or test the (cross) cable.
•New NCO’s are delivered without software. To access them for the first time use the passwords;
“target and password”. After the software upgrade “admin and admin” can be used again.
8.5.3 NCO: Battery removed from the PCB with no power.
When the battery is replaced without the power switched on, all Bios settings are lost.
These can be set back with the following actions:
•Connect an RS232 cable to the NCO and start up the HyperTerminal program (see chapter 12)
•Set all settings back as mentioned in the instructions of the HyperTerminal document.
•Power down and up the unit. Now you time and date will be wrong.

Correct the time and date via the rotary switch on the front of the unit.
8.6 Power Amplifiers
8.6.1 PAM: Display shows Standby:
The unit is not recognized in the Configuration software.
•Check the serial number in the configuration.
•Check if the unit is enabled in the configuration.
•See chapter 8.4.2
8.6.2 PAM: Display shows no information:
•When this occurred after equipment down load (unit software upgrade) the download may have
failed. Connect only that unit to the NCO and restart the equipment download. (See chapter 8.4.2)
•If the amplifier works correct, the display might be broken. Send the unit for repair.
8.6.3 PAM: Display shows “No Network”:
This message is shown when this unit doesn’t get information from the NCO.
•Check if the NCO is switched on.
•Check the POF cables connected to this unit. (See also chapter 9.5.2)
8.6.4 PAM: Display in Standby:
The text “Standby” in the power amplifiers display can be caused by several situations;
•When the software does not recognize a power amplifier. To solve this, check the configuration
software if that power amplifier configured and enabled.
•When a power amplifier doesn’t start up, it could be that there is a communication problem caused
by the POF cabling. When you have a large system, which is near or over the POF cable limitations,
starting up the system in power amplifier groups could solve the problem.
Example; you have 20 Power amplifiers, 10 amplifiers are switched on and 10 off.
1. Switch on the NCO and therewith start up the first 10 power amplifiers.
2. Switch on the other 10 power amplifiers with the mains switch.
See also chapter 9.5.4 Communication stability check for more information.
•When a unit is defect. You could see the type of defect of that unit in the diagnose page.
8.7 Call station
8.7.1 All LED’s on
When all LED’s on a call station are on, the software download could be failed. This problem could occur
when the call station lost communication during a software upgrade.
•Check in the undefined page in the Configuration and diagnostics software under “upgrade unit
software”. If the call station is recognized here than upgrade the unit. If this doesn’t help it needs to
be repaired.
When the Call station is powered and the extension is removed, the Call station can get defect. The symptoms
are than: all LED’s on, unit not recognized by the system (unit can not be found in upgrade unit software
page)
8.8 Communication
8.8.1 POF Cable check
A simple way to check a POF cable is using a fiber interface or a network splitter.
•Connected the to be checked cable to a network Controller and the fiber interface / network splitter.
It’s advisable to connect an extra cable with a cable coupler LBB4419 for extra signal attenuation.

The status LED on the fiber interface indicates if your cable has communication with the NCO, than
your cable is ok.
Network Splitter: Green LED is on.
Fiber Interface: Green LED is on, NOT blinking.

8.8.2 Ring or Branch Check
The Power Amplifiers have a possibility to check if your system is running as a ring (redundant connected) or
as a branch (not redundant connected).
•Go via the menu on the booster via the front knob to settings -> serial number.
Push the front knob for 5 seconds until you are in menu 2Aa
No you can see the indication “ring” or “branch” depending on the way of connection.
The message “end of branch” indicates that this is the last unit connected to it.
If you see the message “end of branch” and there are 2 POF cables connected to it, you know 1 of
them is faulty.
