1)Introduction
TheBExH120DHootronicflameproofsoundermeetsthe
requirementsoftheATEXdirective94/9/ECandtheIECEx
scheme.Thesounderproducestraditionalwarningsignals
andcan be usedinhazardousareaswherepotentially
flammableatmospheresmaybe present. Fivedifferentfirst
stage soundscan be selectedbyinternalpinheaders,and
eachone can beexternallychanged toasecondorthird
stage sound(see soundtableonPage4).TheHootronic
soundercan beusedinZone1andZone2areaswithgases
ingroupsIIA,IIBandIICandtemperatureClassificationsof
T1, T2, T3andT4.Forambienttemperaturesover+55ºCthe
gasgroupsarelimited toIIAandIIB.

Thesoundershouldbesecurelybolted toasuitablesurface
usingthe7mm diameterboltholesinthestainless steelU
shapedmountingbracket(seefigure1).Theanglecan then
be adjustedinthedirectionthatthesoundisprimarily
required tocover.Thiscan be achieved bylooseningthetwo
large bracketscrewsinthesideoftheunit, whichallow
adjustmentinstepsof 18°.Oncompletionoftheinstallation
thetwolarge bracketadjustmentscrewsonthesideofthe
unitmustbe fullytightened toensurethattheunitcannot
moveinservice.
7) SafetyWarning (ElectrostaticHazard)
TheacoustichornsectionismadeofABSPlastic,therefore
toavoidapossibleELECTROSTACTICCHARGEtheunit
must onlybe cleanedwithadampcloth.
8) Access to theFlameproofEnclosure
Inordertoconnect theelectricalsupplycablestothesounder
itisnecessarytoremovetheflameproofcovertogainaccess
totheflameproofchamber.Toachievethisremovethefour
M6hexagonsocketheadscrews(see figure2)andwithdraw
theflameproofcovertakingextremecarenottodamagethe
flameproofjointsintheprocess.
Notethefour M6screwsareClass A4-80 stainlesssteel
andonlyscrewsofthiscategorycanbeusedonthese
sounders. Itisthereforeimportantthatthesescrewsand
theirspringwashersarekeptinasafeplaceduring
installation.
Oncompletionofthecablewiringinstallationtheflameproof
jointsshouldbe inspected toensurethattheyareclean and
thattheyhavenotbeendamaged duringinstallation.Also
checkthattheearthbondingwirebetweenthetwocasting
sectionsissecureandthe‘O’ringsealisinplace.When
replacingtheflameproofcovercastingensurethat it issquare
withtheflameproofchambercastingbeforeinserting.
Carefullypushthecoverinplaceallowingtimefortheairto
be expelled.Onlyafterthecoverisfullyinplaceshouldthe
fourM6StainlessSteelA4-80coverboltsandtheirspring
washerbe inserted andtightened down.If thecoverjams
whileitisbeinginserted,carefullyremoveitandtryagain.
Neverusethecoverboltstoforcethecoverintoposition.
9) PowerSupplySelection
Itisimportantthatasuitablepowersupplyisusedtorun the
sounder.Thepowersupplyselectedmusthavethe
necessarycapacitytoprovidetheinputcurrenttoall ofthe
soundersconnected tothesystem.
Thefollowingtableshowsthe inputcurrenttakenbythe

10) CableSelection
Whenselectingthecablesizeconsiderationmustbegivento
theinputcurrentthateachunitdraws(see tableabove),the
numberofsoundersonthelineandthe lengthofthecable
runs.Thecablesizeselected musthavethenecessary
capacitytoprovidetheinputcurrenttoall ofthesounders
connected totheline.
SAFETYWARNING: IftheBExH120DHootronicsounderis
used athighambienttemperatures,i.e.over+40ºC,thenthe
cableentrytemperaturemayexceed+70ºCandtherefore
suitableheatresistingcablesmustbeused,witharated
servicetemperatureofat least 110ºC.
11) Earthing
BothACandDC sounderunitsmustbe connectedtoagood
qualityearth.Theunitsareprovided withinternaland
externalearthingterminalswhicharebothlocated onthe
terminalchambersectionoftheunit(see figures2and3).

Whenusingtheinternalearthterminalensurethatthe
stainless steelM4flatwasherisbetweentheincoming earth
wireandtheenclosure.
Whenusingtheexternalearthterminalacablecrimplug
must be used. Thecablelugshouldbelocatedbetweenthe
twoM5stainless steelflat washers. TheM5stainless steel
springwashermust be fixed betweentheouterflat washer
andtheM5stainless steelnut toensurethat thecablelugis
secured against looseningandtwisting.
Theinternalearthbondingwireensuresthatagoodquality
earthismaintained betweentheflameproof chambercasting
andtheflameproofcovercasting.
12) CableGlands
TheBExH120DHootronicsounderhasdualcablegland
entrieswhichhavean M20 x1.5entrythreadasstandard.
OnlycableglandsapprovedforEx‘d’applicationscan be
used,whichmustbesuitableforthetypeofcablebeing used
andalsomeettherequirementsoftheEx‘d’flameproof
installationstandardEN60079-14:2008 / IEC60079-14:2007.
SAFETYWARNING: Ifthe BExH120Dsounderisusedat
highambienttemperatures,i.e.over+40ºC,thenthecable
entrytemperaturemayexceed+70ºCandthereforesuitable
heat resistingcableglandsmust beused, witharated service
temperatureofat least 110ºC.
IfahighIP(IngressProtection)ratingisrequired thena
suitablesealingwashermust be fitted underthecablegland.
Whenonlyonecableentryisusedtheotheronemustbe
closedwithanEx‘d’flameproofblankingplug, whichmust be
suitablyapproved fortheinstallationrequirements.
13) CableConnections
Thecableconnectionsaremade intotheterminalblockson
theelectronicpcbassemblylocatedintheflameproof
enclosure.Seesection8ofthismanualforaccesstothe
flameproofenclosure.OntheACunitsatwo-wayterminal
blockisprovidedfortheliveandneutralmainssupplywires
andafourwayterminalblockisprovidedforlinkingtheStop
andthesecondandthirdstages,(see figure5).OntheDC
unitsafivewayterminalblockisprovidedfor+veand–ve
supplyinputandsecondandthirdstage andtheStop modes
ofoperation, (see figure4).

Asinglewirewithacross sectionalareaofupto4mm²can
be connectedtoeachterminalwayorifan inputandoutput
wireisrequired two2.5mm²wirescan be connected toeach
terminalway.Whenconnectingwirestotheterminalsgreat
careshouldbetakentodress thewiresothat whenthecover
isinsertedintothechamberthewiresdonotexertexcess
pressureontheterminalblocks.Thisisparticularlyimportant
whenusingcableswithlarge crosssectionalareassuchas
2.5mm²andabove.

14) SoundSelection
TheBExH120DHootronicsounderhas5differenttraditional
soundsthatcan be selectedforthefirststagealarm.The
sounderscan thenbe switched tosoundsecond andthird
stage alarmsounds.The soundsareselectedbypinheaders
onthepcbforbothDCandACunits.The soundtableon
page fourshowsthepinheaderpositionsforthe5sounds
andwhichsoundsareavailableforthesecondand third
stages.
TheBExH120DHootronicsounderhasthefacilitytoreplicate
the“tail off”traditionallyassociated withthesesoundswhen
generatedbyelectro-mechanicaldevices.Theswitchingis
achieved usingthe“Stop”terminal(see section15).
15) Stop and2nd &3rdStageAlarmSoundSelection
Theoperationofthesecondandthirdstagesisdifferentfor
DC andACunits.
DC UnitsSecondandThirdStage SoundSelection
TheBExH120DHootronicDC sounderhasthefacilitytouse
either+veor–veswitchingtochange thesoundtothe
secondandthirdstages.For–veswitchingconnectthetwo
headersonthepcbtotheleft-hand(marked –ve)andcentre
pins.For+veswitchingconnecttheheaderstotherighthand
(marked +ve)andthecentrepins.Tochange tothesecond
stage sound,connecteithera-veor+vesupplylineto
terminalS2,depending onwhichswitchingmodeisbeing
used whilemaintainingthedcsupplytothe+veand–ve
terminals. Similarlyforthethirdstage sound, connect a-veor
+vesupplylinetoterminalS3.ThesupplytotheS3terminal
will automaticallyoverride asupplytotheS2terminal.

unit must remainpowered.
16) Volume Control
TheBExH120DHootronicsounderhasavolumecontrolto
adjusttheoutputlevel.Tosettherequired outputlevel,
adjustthepotentiometeronthepcb.Formaximumoutput
levelthepotentiometershouldbesettothefullyclockwise
position.
17) End ofLineMonitoring (DC Units)
OnBExH120DHootronicDCunits, dcreverselinemonitoring
can be usedifrequired.TheDC unithasablockingdiode
fitted intheirsupplyinputlines.Anendoflinemonitoring
diodeoran endoflinemonitoringresistorcan beconnected
acrossthe+veand–veterminals.If an endof lineresistoris
used itmusthaveaminimumresistancevalueof3k3ohms
andaminimumwattage of0.5wattsoraminimumresistance
valueof500ohmsandamin.wattage of2watts.
