8. AttachtheconnectorontheattachmentendoftheSRLtothebackD‐ringofyour
FullBodyHarness.Ensurethattheconnector’sgateisclosedandlocked.
9. YouarenowattachedandprotectedbytheSRL.Thepreferredorientationofthe
deviceisverticalwiththelifelineexitatthebottom;however,thedevicewill
performeithercompletelyhorizontaloranyotherangle.Toassureproperlifeline
retraction,keeplifelinepathclearofobstructions.Bewareofswingfallhazards
whenworkingatextremeangles.
Oncetheabovestepshavebeentaken,theuserwillhaveaccesstotheirworkarea
whilewalkingandmovingatnormalspeeds.Itisimportantnottomakesuddenor
dramaticmovements,astheSRLisdesignedtolockupwhenthelinebeginstomoveat
arateof4.5feetpersecond.SuddenmovementsoraccelerationcancausetheSRLto
lockup,whichmay“jerk”theuserandcouldresultintheuserlosinghisorherbalance.
Whenusingtheequipment,caremustbetakentobeawareoftheworkenvironment
andanyhazards,obstructionsorobstaclesthatmayexist.Becarefulofanyandallfall
hazardsandalsobeawareofslippingandtrippinghazardsaswell.
Section4:ProductSelection
Productselectionisasimportantastheproperuseoftheproductitself.Poor
judgmentinproductselectioncanhavecatastrophicresults–thereforebesureto
consultacompetentpersontoensurethattheproductthatisissuedisappropriatefor
theapplicationandthespecificlocationforwhichitisintended.
ANSIZ359.1‐2007,Section7describesindetailthestepsthatshouldbetakenwith
regardtotheselectionoffallarrestequipment.FallTechstronglyencouragestheuseof
thisguidebythosewhoemployusersoffallarrestproducts.TheANSIstandard
recommendsthefollowingstepsbetaken:
Aworkplaceassessmentbyacompetentpersontakingintoaccountthepresenceof
sourcesofextremeheat,chemicals,electricalhazards,environmentalcontaminants,
sharpobjects,abrasivesurfaces;movingequipmentandmaterials,unstable,uneven
andslipperywalking/workingsurfaces;unguardedopenings;climatic/weatherfactors
andforeseeablechangestotheseconditions.Caremustbetakentoensurethatthe
equipmentthatisselectedissuitableforusewhereanyoftheseconditionsmayexist.
Theworkplaceassessmentmustidentifyallpathsofmovementandthefallhazards
alongthesepaths.Caremustbetakentoensurethatthereareproperanchoragesat
appropriateintervalsalongthesepathstoprotecttheusersfromthesehazards
withoutexposuretoswing‐fallconditions.ThePFASselectedmustlimitthefall
distanceinordertoavoidcontactwiththenextlowerlevelintheeventofafall.
Anchorageconnectorsshouldbeselectedonthebasisoftheirsuitabilityfor
attachmenttotheanchorpointtoensureacompatibleandsecureconnection.
Theexposureoftheanchorageconnectortosharpedges,abrasivesurfacesandother
physical/structuralhazardsshouldbeconsideredwhenevaluatingcompatibility.
Thecompetentpersonshallcalculatetheweightofallauthorizedpersonswhenfully
equippedtoensurethattheyarewithinthemaximumcapacityofthePFAS.
AfullbodyharnessmeetingtherequirementsofZ359shallbeselected,anditshall
besizedtofittheuserasperthemanufacturer’sinstructions.
Connectorsthatareselectedshallbesuitablysizedandshapedsoastobe
compatiblewiththedevicestowhichtheywillbeattached.
Thecompetentpersonshallselectthemethodofprotectingtheequipmentfrom
damagebyworkplaceconditions,inaccordancewiththemanufacturer’sinstructions.
Thecompetentpersonshallchecktheequipmentinstructionsandmarkingsto
ensurecompliancewiththeappropriatestandardsandwillensurethat
manufacturer’sinstructions;markingsandwarningsarereadandfollowed.
