ThesignaltonoiseratioinFMmodeisincreasedby13dB.Thishasthesameeffectas
increasingthetransmitpowerlevelby13dB.Therangeresolution(denedascT/2)for
600usCWpulseis45cm.A4.5msCWpulsewouldgivethesamecoverageas12ms
FM.ButthisCWpulsewouldgivearangeresolutionof200cm(=4.5*45cm).
Thenormallyrecommendedsurveyfrequencyis300kHz.Atthisfrequencythe
bandwidthusedismorethan75kHzwiththreeangularsectorsrunningatseparate
frequencies.Withdualswathsixfrequenciesareused(withshortestpulsethetotal
bandwidtusedismorethan100kHz).Theminimumpulselengthis70microsecondsin
threesectors,andreducedto35microsecondsusingonesector.With35μspulsethe
rangeresolution(denedascτ/2)is26mm.FordeepwatersFMchirpisemployedwith
abandwidthof1.7kHz.Thisallowsaswathwidthintheorderof600mandadepth
capabilityofabout400mincoldoceanwaters.
The200kHzfrequencymodeissimilartothe300kHzmode.ItusesthesameCWpulse
lengths,whiletheFMchirppulselengthisincreased.Therangeanddepthresolutionis
thesame.Normallytwosectorsareusedperswath,butsinglesectorcanalsobeused.At
thisfrequencytheabsorptioninthewaterislowerthanat300kHz,resultinginincreased
swathwidthanddepthcapability.IncoldoceanwaterswithFMchirpaswathwidthof
700mcanbeexpectedandapproximately500mdepthcapability.
The400kHzfrequencymodeisintendedforhighresolutioninspectionwork.Veryshort
transmitpulsesandwidereceiverbandwidthisused.Theoperatormayselectbetween
oneandthreetransmitsectors.WithasingleRXtransducerthecoveragelimitis120
degrees(±60degrees),andwithdualRXthecoverageis180degrees(±90degrees).The
shortestpulseusedis25μsgivingarangeresolutionlessthan20mm(cτ/2).Itisalso
possibletorundualswath,butnotusingtheshortestpulselength.
TheEM2040ismodular,allowingtheusertotailorthebeamwidthstotheoperational
requirements,0.4by0.7degreesor0.7by0.7degrees.Thetransmitfanisdividedinto
threesectorspingingsimultaneouslyatseparatefrequencies.Thisensuresaverystrong
andbenecialdampeningofmultibounceinterferencewhichonsimplersystemsoften
isseenatbeamanglesfrom60degreesandoutwards.TheEM2040hasdualswath
capability,allowingasufcientsoundingdensityalongtrackatareasonablevesselspeed.
EM2040alsohasascanningmode,i.e.onesectoristransmittedatatime,givingthe
possibilitytousetheshortestpulselengthwhilestillkeepingthefullswathcoverage.
ThestandarddepthratingoftheEM2040subseapartsis6000m.Thesystemisideal
foruseonsubseavehiclessuchasAUVsorROVs.Allanalogelectronicsarecontained
KongsbergEM2040
