Introduction:
Special designed to located and turn the camshaft
in correct TDC position.
The timing tool is designed to hold the camshaft
pulley for turning the central bolt.

BMW (N63/N74/S63)
ENGINE TIMING TOOL KIT CT4869

Instruction:
Warning: Engines with variable valve timing: Mark
camshafts, camshaft sprockets, camshaft adjusters
and related camshaft drive system components (as
applicable) with chalk or paint prior to removal or
dismantling to assist alignment on installation.
Removal/installation of timing chain requires:
-Engine removal.
-Removal of cylinder heads.
-Upper and lower sump removal.
Checking Valve Timing
1. Install crankshaft alignment tool.
2. Ensure crankshaft alignment tool aligned with
Mark "MP" on crankshaft pulley.
3. Turn crankshaft in direction of engine rotation
until crankshaft timing pin can be installed.
4. Remove crankshaft timing pin.

5. Turn crankshaft 90°anti-clockwise.
6. Lock timing chain tensioner in retracted position.
7. Push plunger into tensioner body in direction of
arrow.
8. Insert 3.5 mm pin to lock tensioner plunger.
9. Remove timing chain tensioner.
10. Install timing chain pre-tensioning tool.

11. Pre-load timing chain with pre-tensioning tool to
0.6 Nm.

Turn crankshaft in direction of engine rotation
until crankshaft timing pin can be installed.
13. LH bank: Ensure camshaft lobes for No.5
cylinder are positioned as shown.
14. RH bank: Ensure camshaft lobes for No.1
cylinder are positioned as shown.
15. Ensure camshaft adjusters in the installation
position.
Note: Camshaft rotation possible using spanner on
hexagon.
16. Turn inlet camshaft slowly anti-clockwise as far
as stop.

Turn exhaust camshaft slowly anti-clockwise as
far as stop.
Note: Replace camshaft adjuster(s), if not locked in
installation position.
18. Install camshaft alignment tools.
19. Timing correct when camshaft alignment tools
abut cylinder head.
20. Remove timing chain pre-tensioning tool.
21. Install timing chain tensioner.
22. Remove pin to release timing chain tensioner
plunger.
Adjusting Valve Timing
Note: Carry out valve timing checking procedure
first.
1. Ensure crankshaft timing pin correctly fitted.
2. LH bank: Ensure camshaft lobes for No.5 cylinder
are positioned as shown.
3. RH bank: Ensure camshaft lobes for No.1 cylinder
are positioned as shown.
4. Slacken central bolt of each camshaft adjuster.
Note: If camshaft alignment tools cannot be correctly
fitted, hold camshafts with spanner on hexagon.
5. Fit new camshaft adjuster central bolts. Finger
tighten bolts.
Note: Apply copper paste to underside of camshaft
adjuster central bolt flange.
6. Turn camshafts until alignment tools abut cylinder
head. Camshaft rotation possible using spanner on
hexagon.
7. Install camshaft alignment tool adapter.
8. Install camshaft alignment tool holder.
9. Install camshaft alignment tool retaining bolt.
Finger tighten camshaft alignment tool retaining bolt.

Tighten central bolt of each camshaft adjuster.
Tightening torque: 30 Nm + 90°

11. Remove special tools.
12. Turn crankshaft two turns clockwise.
13. Install crankshaft alignment tool.
14. Install crankshaft timing pin.
15. Install camshaft alignment tools.
16. Ensure camshaft alignment tools abut cylinder
head.
17. Remove special tools.
Crankshaft Holder for BMW
1. After removal of the oil pump, proceed with
removal of the timing cover. Rotate engine to the
upright position.
2. Using special tool, lock crankshaft and remove
central bolt and front crankshaft damper. (Fig.5)

3. Remove all timing cover bolts and remove timing
cover. (Fig.6) Note arrangement of the timing chain
guides. (Fig.7)

4. Remove chain guides and set aside. (Fig.8)
Arrange neatly for re-installation.
