In order to get the ultimate benefit from your FLM 40 you should
read through the For Home Owners section in this Installation and
Maintenance Instruction.
FLM 40 is an exhaust air module. This means it can utilise the energy
in the ventilation air. The energy is used to raise the temperature of
the ingoing brine to the heat pump.
FLM 40 is intended to be installed with ground source heat pumps
from NIBE in houses or the like.

The fan in FLM 40 can be set to three
modes, A, B or C. One of these is
used as the normal mode depending
on the selected exhaust air flow. If
mode B is used as the normal mode,
it is possible to obtain greater ventila-
tion by using mode C. In the same
way, A can be used to temporarily
obtain lesser ventilation.
If mode C is used as the normal
mode, it is only possible to obtain
lesser ventilation, in two steps, A or B.

FLM 40 has utilised the energy
in the room air.

FLM 40 is an exhaust air module specially designed to
combine recovery of mechanical exhaust air with an energy
collector in the ground or in rock. FLM 40 is designed to
connect to the FIGHTER 1240/1250 type of ground heat
pump.
The integrated DC-fan in FLM 40 extracts the air from the
wet areas of the house to the recovery unit. Here the en-
ergy is transferred to the heat pump’s brine, whereby the
temperature increases and raises the heat pump’s heating
factor. Energy is stored in the ground or rock collector even
if the heat pump is not in operation, which fully utilises the
exhaust air energy.
The heat pump capacity is not bound by the amount of air,
but the output can be optimally adapted to suit the size of
the house.
FLM 40 is positioned directly on FIGHTER 1240/1250, but
can also be mounted using brackets (accessory) on the wall.

The exhaust air module’s air filter should be cleaned regu-
larly (about 4-5 times a year) by taking it out and shaking
off any dirt. If the filter is very dirty, turn it upside-down
and wash it carefully with water.
Open the front cover by pulling it out by the lower
■
edge, then lifting it up.
Set the switch (8) to ”
■0”.
Disconnect the connector (22) from the fan speed
■
switch.
Release the filter holder by turning the two black knobs
■
a quarter of a turn anti-clockwise.
Pull out the holder, take out the filter (63) and shake
■
off any dirt. Check that the filter is not damaged. New
original filters can be ordered from NIBE.

■ Carry out assembly in reverse order.
The interval between cleaning operations varies and de-
pends on the amount of dust in the exhaust air.

FLM 40 and its ventilation ducting require some regular maintenance where the following points should be checked:

Maintenance routines
Clean the fan once a year by taking it out of the exhaust
air module and carefully brushing the vanes clean.
Open the front cover by pulling it out by the lower

Set the switch (8) to “0”.

Disconnect the connector (22) from the fan speed■

Dismantle the inner cover by loosening the 6 cover

screws.
The fan is removed by disconnecting the fan cable con-

nector and the two screws as illustrated.
Once the inner cover has been removed also check the

drip-pan under the heat exchanger. Also check the out-
let from the drip-pan (98) to ensure it is not blocked.
Assembly takes place in the reverse order.

Maintenance routines
The ventilation devices in the house should be cleaned
regularly to maintain the correct ventilation. The device set-
tings must not be changed.
NOTE! If you take down more than one ventilation device
for cleaning, do not mix them up.
Cleaning the ventilation devices
Check that there is water in the water seal (92) to the drip-
pan (93). If the water seal is empty or has a very low water
level so that it “gurgles” water can be filled, for example,
using a watering can through the condensation water hose
which then forms a water seal or directly in the drip-pan
(the inner cover plate must then be dismantled). The water
seal is maintained during filling.
After using for a period of time dust and other particles
can clog the water seal, consequently, you should check
this regularly and clean when necessary.

The exhaust air module can contain inflam-
mable anti-freeze in the brine circuit (for
example ethanol). Special care should be ex-
ercised during handling, installation, service,
cleaning and scrapping to avoid the risk of
leakage.
Handling
Transport and storage
The exhaust air module should be transported and stored
in the dry.
Frost protection
FLM 40 features integrated frost protection (65) that auto-
matically defrosts the heat exchanger (62) if necessary. This
is achieved by the brine flow through the heat exchanger
being slowed sufficiently so that the warm room air can
thaw the ice.
Normally the temperature of the incoming brine to FLM 40
is shown on the display on the frost protection. The frost
protection is set at the factory and should not need adjus-
ting. Changes to the parameters can result in the heat ex-
changer becoming blocked by frost. The buttons are locked
with a code.
In the event of a fault indication the frost protection stops
the FLM 40 (however, not the ventilation flow).

Installation
FLM 40 is installed on FIGHTER 1240/1250 or using brack-
ets. Noise from the circulation pump or fan can be transfer-
red to the brackets. Consequently, mount on an outside
wall if possible. If it is not possible to mount FLM 40 on
an outside wall avoid a wall connecting to a bedroom or
living-room.
NOTE! Ensure that that there is sufficient space (15 mm)
above the exhaust air module to open the front cover, see
the section “Dimensions”.
Route pipework so it is not fixed to an internal wall that
backs on to a bedroom or living room.

Condensation water hose
The condensation water hose is routed directly to the floor
drain or other water seal. Ensure that the end of the hose
runs out above the water level in the floor drain. The pipe
installation must be carried out in accordance with current
norms.

Pressure expansion vessel
The brine circuit should be fitted with a pressure expansion
vessel. If there is a level vessel this should be replaced. The
brine side should be pressurised to at least 0.5 bar.
The pressure expansion vessel should be dimensioned as
set out in the diagram, to prevent operating disturban-
ces. The pressure expansion vessel covers the temperature
range from -10 °C to +20 °C at a pre-pressure of 0.5 (bar)
and the safety valve’s opening pressure 3 bar.

Filling and venting the system
FLM 40 is filled from the heat pump’s brine, see the
Installation and Maintenance instructions in question.

The lowest permitted incoming brine temperature is -5 °C.
When installing on FIGHTER 1240/150, the space under
FLM 40 is limited to 90 mm. This may mean that the pipe
connections on FIGHTER 1240/1250 must be shortened.
The brine is connected to FLM 40 as set out on the outline
diagram.
When installing on FIGHTER 1240/1250, pipes for the
■
heat medium and water heater and, if necessary hot
water circulation, are routed backwards.
Install the check valve horizontally.
■
The distance from the wall must be 50 mm for both■
FIGHTER 1240/1250 and FLM 40.
Install the supplied angle pieces on FLM 40 so that it
■
points to the left or right, depending on the connec-
tions on the heat pump for the brine.
Place FLM 40 on top of FIGHTER 1240/1250.
■
Install the supplied brine hoses through the side door■
(left or right) on FLM 40. Secure the brine hoses to the
angled pieces (from the front or rear) after having first
pulled out the junction box.
Slide FIGHTER 1240/1250/FLM 40 to the desired posi-
■
tion.

External control of fan and brine
pump
To externally start and stop the fan in FLM 40 remove the
bridge between -X14:11 and -X14:12. Connect potential
free contact between -X14:11 and -X14:12.
To externally start and stop the brine pump in FLM 40
remove the bridge between -X14:3 and -X14:4. Connect
potential free contact between -X14:3 and -X14:4.

General
When FLM 40 is placed directly above the heat pump the
power supply can be connected to the heat pump’s termi-
nal block. The connection plug must however be cut off.
If FLM 40 is installed independently it can be connected
either to an earthed 1-phase wall socket or through per-
manent installation. When a permanent installation is used,
FLM 40 must be preceded by a circuit-breaker.
If an insulation test is to be carried out in the building, dis-
connect the exhaust air module.

FLM 40 is connected so that all ventilation air, except for
the kitchen fan, passes the heat exchanger (62) in the
exhaust air module. Minimum flow should conform to the
demands as set out in applicable norms. The ventilation
flow should conform to applicable norms.
Switching the ventilation capacity is described in the sec-
tion “Electrical installation” “Setting the fan capacity”.
Exhaust air duct
The kitchen flue must not be connected to FLM 40
A duct in a masonry chimney stack
must not be used for extract air.
NOTE!
Duct installation
To prevent fan noise being transferred to the exhaust air
devices, it may be a good idea to install a silencer in the
duct. This is especially important if there are exhaust air
devices in bedrooms.
Connections can be made using flexible hoses, which
should be stretched well and routed to allow easy replace-
ment. The extract air duct must be provided with diffusion-
tight insulation over its entire length. Provision must be
made for inspection of the duct. Make sure that there are
no reductions of cross-sectional area in the form of creases,
tight bends etc, since this will reduce the ventilation capa-
city. All joins in the ducting must be sealed and pop-riveted
to prevent leakage. The duct system must be carried out in
accordance with current norms.
Adjustment
To obtain the necessary air exchange in every room of the
house, the exhaust air devices must be correctly positioned
and adjusted. A defective ventilation installation may lead
to reduced exhaust air module efficiency and thus poo-
rer operating economy, and may result in damage to the
house.

The numbering of the fan curves refer to “Ventilations

DIP-switch 5 and 6 corresponds to position A on the knob.
DIP-switch 1 and 2 corresponds to position B on the knob.
DIP-switch 3 and 4 corresponds to position C on the knob.

Preparations
Before commissioning check that the brine circuit is filled
and vented.
Check the pipe system for leaks.
Check that the brine circuit is pressurised to at least 0.5
bar.
Setting the ventilation
See the section “Ventilation connection” - “Setting the fan
capacity”.
Commissioning
Start the heat transfer pump on the heat pump, see the
Installation and Maintenance instructions in question.
The brine flow across the FLM 40 is controlled by means
of the circulation pump (16) and trim valve (81) so that the
temperature difference on the brine in and out through
FLM 40 is 3 - 4 degrees. Adjustments are made when the
heat pump is running. The temperature difference applies
at a room temperature of 20 degrees and 0 degrees on the
brine.
The brine flow through FLM 40 will be from 0.1 l/s (360 l/h)
to 0.15 l/s (540 l/h) at the above temperature differences,
depending on the ventilation flow.
When the heat pump is at a standstill the internal circula-
tion pump in FLM 40 gives from 0.085 l/s (306 l/h) to 0.125
l/s (450 l/h) in the return charging flow to the collector. This
applies to a heat pump with an approximate rated output
of 4 kW. For a 15 kW heat pump the corresponding flow is
from 0.09 l/s (324 l/h) to 0.14 l/s (504 l/h).
Readjustment
Venting may be necessary after a period of use. Vent using
the venting screw (5). The switch (38) should be set to “0”
when venting.
Commissioning and adjusting
Starting
Set the switch (38) to 1.
Set the switch (8) to 1.
Check that the fan and circulation pump are running.

Low or a lack of ventilation
Cause: Filter(63) clogged.
Action: Clean or replace the filter, see the section
“Maintenance procedures” - “Cleaning the air
filter”.
Cause: Exhaust air device blocked or choked down too
much.
Action: Check and measure the air flow.
Cause: Circuit or main MCB tripped.
Action: Reset or replace the MCB.
Cause: Fan blocked.
Action: Contact installer
Cause: The battery blocked by frost.
Action: Switch off the circulation pump using switch (38).
Leave it switched off for 24 hours.
Helping the circulation pump to start
Open the front cover by pulling it out by the lower■
edge, then lifting it up.
Set the switch (8) “0”.
■
Disconnect the connector (22) from the fan speed■
switch.
Dismantle the inner cover by loosening the 6 cover
■
screws.
Loosen the venting screw with a screwdriver. Hold a
■
cloth around the screwdriver blade as a certain amount
of fluid may run out.
Insert a screwdriver and turn the pump rotor.
■
Screw in the venting screw.■
Start FLM 40 and check whether the circulation pump■
runs.
It is usually easier to start the circulation pump with FLM
40 running, switch (8) set to “1”. If helping the circulation
pump to start is performed with FLM 40 running, be pre-
pared for the screwdriver to jerk when the pump starts.
