Introduction
This document describes how to remove and replace a
drive cover assembly on any Overland Storage ARCvault
unit. There are three different types of drive covers:
•2-port cover for a single SCSI drive in the drive bay
•4-port cover for dual SCSI drives in the drive bay
•Fibre Channel (FC) cover for a FC drive
Each drive cover comes complete with a new fan assembly.
Early versions of the ARCvault 12 and 24 featured a SCSI
drive cover (Figure 1) with only a single bus. The newer
drive covers now feature independent buses.

NOTE: If replacing an older single bus drive cover on an
ARCvault 24 with a newer 4-port SCSI drive cover and you want
to retain the daisy-chain configuration for your network, an
optional jumper cable is needed (available separately).
Unpacking
Carefully unpack and verify that you have all the parts:
•Spare drive cover assembly (verify you have the
correct one for your system’s configuration)
•These remove & replace instructions
WARNING: To reduce the risk of electric shock or
damage to equipment, disconnect the power by
unplugging the power cord.
The design of the drive cover makes it easy to change it out
while the ARCvault unit is still mounted in a rack
(Figure 2).

Electrostatic Discharge Information
A discharge of static electricity can damage micro-circuitry
or static-sensitive devices. To help prevent Electrostatic
Discharge (ESD), observe standard ESD precautions.

Prepare the Library
1. From the Operator Control Panel (OCP), press Power
> Power Off Library > OK (at the power down
message) to power down the unit.
2. After the unit has shut down, remove the power cord.
3. At the rear, remove the SCSI cable and terminator
from the drive cover.
Replace the Drive Cover
1. Loosen the two thumbscrews on the drive cover.
2. Remove the drive cover as follows:
a. Gently pull the drive cover out and hold it about
2 inches (5cm) below the drive bay (Figure 3).
b. Unplug the fan wiring from the fan connector.
c. Using the guide handles, pull the assembly out
about 1 inch (2.5cm) and unplug the SCSI cable
from the drive.
d. Set the old cover aside.

3. Install the new drive cover as follows:
a. Holding the drive cover below the drive bay opening,
plug in the fan connector.
b. With the drive assembly still pull slightly out, attach
the SCSI drive cable to the drive (Figure 4).
c. Slide the assembly the rest of the way into the drive
bay.

4. Carefully reseat the drive cover and tighten the two
thumbscrews.
IMPORTANT: Be sure all drive wiring is secure in the space
behind the drive assembly and not caught between the
drive cover and the unit when reseating the cover.
5. Reconnect the SCSI cable and terminator to the
drive cover ports.
6. Plug in the power cord and power on the unit.
7. Check the fan to verify it is working.
Prepare the Library
1. From the Operator Control Panel (OCP), press Power
> Power Off Library > OK (at the power down
message) to power down the unit.
2. After the unit has shut down, remove the power cord.
3. At the rear, remove the SCSI cables and terminators
from the drive cover.
Replace the Drive Cover
1. Loosen the two thumbscrews on the drive cover.
2. Remove the drive cover as follows:
a. Gently pull the drive cover out and hold it about
2 inches (5cm) below the drive bay (Figure 5 on
page 3).
b. Unplug the fan wiring from the fan connector.
c. Using the guide handles, pull the assembly out
about 1 inch (2.5cm) and unplug the SCSI cables
from the drives.
d. Set the old cover aside.

3. Install the new drive cover as follows:
a. Holding the drive cover below the drive bay opening,
plug in the fan connector.
b. With the drive assembly still pull slightly out, attach
the SCSI drive cables to the drives (Figure 6).
c. Slide the assembly the rest of the way into the drive
bay.
4. Carefully reseat the drive cover and tighten the two
thumbscrews.
IMPORTANT: Be sure all drive wiring is secure in the space
behind the drive assembly and not caught between the
drive cover and the unit when reseating the cover.

5. Reconnect the SCSI cables and terminators to the
drive cover ports.
NOTE: If using a daisy-chain layout, connect a SCSI jumper
cable (not supplied) between the 2nd and 3rd ports.
6. Plug in the power cord and power on the unit.
7. Check the fan to verify it is working.
Prepare the Library
1. From the Operator Control Panel (OCP), press Power
> Power Off Library > OK (at the power down
message) to power down the unit.
2. After the unit has shut down, remove the power cord.
3. At the rear, remove the FC cable from the drive port.
Replace the Drive Cover
1. Loosen the two thumbscrews on the drive cover.
2. Remove the drive cover as follows:
a. Gently pull the drive cover out and hold it about
2 inches (5cm) below the drive bay (Figure 7).
b. Unplug the fan wiring from the fan connector.
c. Set the old cover aside.
3. Holding the new drive cover below the drive bay
opening, plug in the fan connector.

4. Carefully reseat the drive cover and tighten the two
thumbscrews.
IMPORTANT: Be sure all drive wiring is secure in the space
behind the drive assembly and not caught between the
drive cover and the unit or blocking the port access hole
when reseating the cover.
5. Reconnect the FC cable to the drive port.
6. Plug in the power cord and power on the unit.
7. Check the fan to verify it is working.
