1 Factoryline FL SWITCH 1708 M12 POE
1.1 Properties
The Gigabit Power over Ethernet switch, which is suitable for industrial applications, en-
ables the common transmission of power and data according to IEEE 802.3at/802.3af via
an Ethernet cable. Up to 30 W supply power per port is possible.
This means that termination devices such as WLAN or Bluetooth access points, IP phones
or IP cameras can be connected quickly and inexpensively to the network, since the switch
handles the power supply of the connected devices.
The device is a compact switch in a robust IP67 metal housing. It has eight 8-pos. M12
Ethernet connectors, which enable the supply of PoE/PoE+ devices and operation with
speeds of 10/100/1000 Mbps. As it supports jumbo frames up to 9720 bytes, the switch is
ideal for networking cameras.
A total power of 200 W is available for supplying up to eight PoE/PoE+ devices. The switch
generates the 54 V DC required for Power over Ethernet according to IEEE 802.3at/802.3af
from the 24 V module supply for the connected termination devices.

2 Mounting and installation
2.1 Mounting and removing the IP67 switch
The device should be mounted on a flat, perpendicular mounting surface. The connec-
tors/cables must be inserted from below. Secure the device using four screws, e.g., slotted
cylinder head screws according to DIN EN ISO 1207-M6 x 16-8.8. For the drill hole spacing
in mm, please refer to the drawing.

2.3 Installing the device
2.3.1 Connecting the supply voltage
Power is supplied via a 4-pos., T-coded M12 power connector, which is designed for a cur-
rent load of up to 12 A per pin. The supply voltage range is 18.7 - 30.5 V DC (24 V DC nom-
inal value); the supply voltage can be connected redundantly. (See Figure 2-4)

Make sure that the power supply unit used meets the following basic requirements:
We recommend protecting the device with a 12 AT backup fuse (slow-blow). For appro-
priate fuse holders or thermomagnetic device circuit breakers, please refer to “Ordering
data” on page 28.

– The 24 V outputs of the power supply unit are grounding-free and subject to the voltage
limitations of the SELV circuit according to IEC/EN 60950-1.
– Insulation requirements according to IEEE 802.3af (at), i.e., dielectric strength of the
secondary 24 V outputs leading to the (grounded) housing must be at least 1500 V AC
at 50 to 60 Hz or 2250 V DC for one minute each.
– The power supply unit must be properly sized for the total occurring power (see “Tech-
nical data” on page 25).
Where the device is connected to a redundant power supply (two separate power supplies,
see Figure “Redundant operation with two power supplies (example)” on page 12), both
power supply units must comply with above requirements.
All devices operated on the external power supply unit must have a dielectric strength of at
least 1500 V AC at 50 to 60 Hz or 2250 V DC for one minute each between their 24 V supply
potentials on the one hand and between all conductive parts that can be touched on the
other hand.
The power supply unit and the FL SWITCH 1708 M12 POE together are a current source
with limited power (“limited power source” for the connected PDs according to
IEC 60950-1.
2.3.2 Signal contact/diagnostic socket
Signal contact The device has two floating signal contacts. An error is indicated when the contact is
opened.
Please note that load distribution does not take place. The device selects the supplying
power supply unit independently.
In the case of non-redundant power supply, the switch indicates the failure of a supply
voltage by opening the signal contact. You can prevent this by applying the voltage to both
supply voltage connections in parallel, as illustrated in Figure 2-3 on page 12.

2.3.3 Assignment of the M12 Ethernet connections
8-pos. M12 CAT6A sockets with X-coding are used as Ethernet connections. The supply
voltage for the PDs is provided on the wire pairs that carry the signal.
According to IEEE 802.3at, this is an “end point PSE” of which the ports provide alternative
A or B for phantom supply:
– Alternative A: ports X1 to X7

2.3.4 Selecting suitable data cables for PoE(+) applications
A CAT5e cable with a minimum conductor cross section of 0.13 mm2(AWG 26) is required
to supply a PoE+ powered device with the maximum power of 25.5 W across the full dis-
tance of 100 m. Please only use shielded category CAT5e (or higher) cables.
2.3.5 Cascading several FL SWITCH 1708 M12 POE switches
For a direct line connection of type FL SWITCH 1708 M12 POE switches (referred to as cas-
cading in the following), it is absolutely necessary that the supplied PoE voltage potentials
of both PoE switches are decoupled on the common and connecting Ethernet data cable.
These voltage potentials can be isolated by using the previously mentioned PoE supply al-
ternatives according to IEEE 802.3at, i.e., alternatives A and B.
For this, two PoE switches to be cascaded must only be connected to one another using
port X1 to X7 connected to port X8 or vice versa. Connecting port X8 to port X8 or intercon-
necting ports X1 to X7, however, is not permitted.
A straight-through (1:1) Ethernet cable must be used for the direct line connection of the
PoE switches in any case.

2.3.5.1 Installation specifications
•For connecting two cascaded PoE switches, only use the following configuration: only
connect ports 1 - 7 of switch 1 to port 8 of switch 2 or vice versa (see the following fig-
ure). Only connect a port from the area marked red to a port from the area marked
green.

2.3.6 Grounding
All Factoryline devices must be grounded so that any possible interference is shielded from
the data telegram and discharged to ground potential. A conductor of at least 2.5 mm² must
be used for grounding. The functional earth ground connection must be established directly
via the housing. Possible connection points are via the fixing points or by mounting on an
grounded metal surface.
Grounding protects people and machines against hazardous voltages. To avoid these
dangers, as far as possible, correct grounding, taking the local conditions into account, is
vital.

3 Startup and function
3.1 Basic settings
3.1.1 Delivery state/default settings
The following functions and properties are available by default:
– The available M12 ports are set to auto negotiation and autocrossing
– The alarm contacts only open in the event of a PoE system or PD (powered device)
overload
– The MAC address table does not contain any entries
3.2 Special notes regarding the use of PoE
For easy configuration, the complete performance framework of PoE/PoE+ is available at
all eight ports, provided the combined total power consumption of all connected powered
devices (PDs) does not exceed 200 W. Otherwise, the internal PSE management system
for the PoE switch makes sure that, starting with the port with the highest number (x8), the
ports are deactivated by the system one at a time until the resulting total load falls below this
threshold value again.
Maximum freedom and flexibility is ensured as it is possible to connect PoE as well as PoE+
loads at all eight ports. Thanks to the power status display, i.e., the power bar, you can de-
termine at a glance how high the current power consumption is in relation to the maximum
power provided. The last red LED on the bar starts to light up as soon as insufficient system
power is available to connect a new class 1 PD (max. 4 W) to the system, since otherwise
a safety margin of 15% of 200 W can no longer be maintained for the continued safe oper-
ation of the PoE loads already connected.
If at some point during operation there is an overload situation in the form of the total per-
missible PoE load of 200 W being exceeded or an overload of a connected PD, this is indi-
cated by a FAIL LED being activated and by a signal contact being opened. Even after the
system has independently removed these overload situations by switching off low-priority
ports or by deactivating the overloaded PD, the FAIL LED is still active and the signal con-
tact is still open. The signal contact can be reset manually via a digital input.
The PSE system of the PoE switch is designed so that it is possible, in principle, to use
PoE/PoE+-capable powered devices (PDs) with a power consumption of up to 30 W each
on all eight ports, provided the total PoE load of the switch does not exceed 200 W.
3.3 Overload response and reset
The diagnostic socket has a standard digital input (DI) and a relay output (N/O contact). The
input and output are in the M12 connector integrated in the housing.
The relay opens the contact on the one hand as soon as the PoE power management sys-
tem of the module finds itself in a PoE overload situation, i.e., as soon as the current total
power consumption of all PDs rises above 200 W. In this case, the PDs are switched off one

at a time, starting with port 8, until the resulting system load is below 200 W again. The PoE
status LEDs of the PDs deactivated by the management system flash twice every 2 sec-
onds.
Another reason why the contact may be opened is the overload of one or more connected
PDs. This happens, for example, in the event of an error (e.g., short circuit) at a PD. The PoE
port where the error occurred is disconnected by the power management system. The PoE
status LED of the corresponding port indicates this state by flashing at 5 Hz. The port can
only be supplied again when the cause of the overload has been removed and the PD has
been reconnected to the device.
In addition, both overload responses are also indicated by the activation of the FAIL LED,
which remains active, regardless of whether the PoE port has been reset, until the signal is
reset by a High signal at the digital input (e.g., by using a key switch). Provided there is no
other error state at the PoE ports at that time, the N/O contact closes again and the FAIL
LED goes out.
3.3.1 Method of operation of the PSE system
The maximum total PoE power of the system that can be managed is 200 W.
A newly connected powered device (PD) is only supplied with power if the currently calcu-
lated power consumption of all devices plus the worst case power consumption of the new
PD (4 W, 7 W, 15 W or 30 W depending on the classification) allows a power reserve of at
least 15%.
As soon as the power consumption of the connected PDs exceeds the total power during
operation, low-priority ports are switched off in order of priority until the resulting total power
is no longer exceeded.
If the current power consumption exceeds the available total power by 10% or more, all low-
priority ports are instantly switched off.
