1.1 Labeling of warning notes

1.2 Qualification of users
The use of products described in this manual is intended for network technical support per-
sons or persons instructed by them who are responsible for installation, commissioning,
and maintenance of the device.
1.3 Field of application of the product
1.3.1 Intended use
This document provides users with the required specifications and installation guidelines for
the FL SWITCH EP74… switch. Hardware assembly, environmental conditions, wire con-
nections, and associated application factors are included.
Configuring the firmware for a switch to perform in a way it is not capable of will result
in no action.

2 Overview and ordering data
2.1 Description
FL SWITCH EP74… advanced modular managed network switches provide an adaptable
platform to meet the electric power industries increasing requirements for scalable network
performance, uptime and security.
The modular 19-in. rack mount switch is hardened for areas heavily affected by EMI, such
as switchgear, transformer stations, and local substations. The switch works reliably under
extreme -40°C to +75°C/85°C environmental conditions and complies with the IEC 61850-
3 Ed 2, and IEEE 1613 specifications. The expandable “all Gigabit capable” architecture
combines cost effective answers for near term needs with upgrade paths for port quan-
tity/bandwidth and functions. A powerful Layer 2 and Layer 3 feature set with hardware-
based IEEE 1588 V2 PTP synchronization, based on the IEC61850-9-3 Utility Power Profile,
provides extensive options to meet changing performance and security needs.
The 28-port switch has four module slots. Three slots accept 10/100/1000 Mbps port mod-
ules (up to eight ports) for device connections, and a fourth slot supports a four-port SFP
module with 1 or 10 Gigabit up-link or device connections. SFP module options provide fur-
ther single point TX/fiber connection customization while allowing for electrically isolated
and secure communication lines between the control house and equipment throughout the
station.
Power is provided by redundant, modular power supplies. The modules are designed for
power source flexibility (AC/DC) and allow for hot-swappable replacement for uninterrupted
24/7 operation.
Power supply modules must be purchased separately.

3.1 Switch base
The switch base FL SWITCH EP74… installs in a standard 19-inch rack using 1U vertical
space with an additional unit (or 44 mm) of space required for cooling above and below the
switch.

Heat generated by the switch is channeled outwards from the enclosure. For improved con-
vectional airflow, make sure there is at least one rack unit (1U) or 44 mm of space around
all sides of the device or between the devices on the rack.
Forced airflow is not required. However, any increase in airflow will result in a reduction of
ambient temperature and improve the long-term reliability of the equipment mounted in the
rack space.
The color LCD displays switch revision information and port status.
The SecureDigital (SD) port cover covers the following:
– SD card slot #1 (top) is for factory use and is disabled.
– SD card slot #2 (bottom) is available for storing up to 32 GB of Syslog event files.
– The management port, a 10/100 Base-T Ethernet port, that is used as an out-of-band
factory service port. It is disabled by default and not available for user access.
– Power status LEDs indicate the status of the installed power supply modules.

USB port
The USB 2.0 port can be used with a USB memory stick to upgrade firmware, back up the
configuration files or transfer Syslog Files. Live access to the switch configuration and diag-
nostics is only provided through the console port or an Ethernet connection using one of the
28 ports. The USB port does not provide PC access to switch configuration and diagnostic
information.
The reset button in the power supply LED area restarts the switch if pressed for less than
2 s. If pressed for more than 2 s in conjunction with secure console commands restores the
switch to the factory default configuration and IP address.

Used to wire to the power supplies, alarm contact, and future internal module options.
Port/Line modules 1-3
10/100/1000 Mbps slots accept up to eight port/line modules, typically for device connec-
tions. These slots also support IEE1588-based Precision Time Protocol (PTP) timing sig-
nals
Port/Line module 4
1 Gigabit/10 Gigabit slot accepts a four-port module, typically used for network trunk up-
links, but can also be used for added device connections This slot does NOT support IEEE
1588-based PTP signals.
The FL SWITCH EP7400-ABLK blank slot filler plate protects empty slots from envi-
ronmental contamination and unauthorized access to slot connectors. It may be in-
stalled over slots 1-4.
