About this Guide
The term ReadiConvene™, used in this documentation, refers to the
Polycom® MGC+ that houses the ReadiConvene Integrated Application
Module (IAM). The ReadiConvene IAM is the hardware platform that
runs the ReadiManager® software application. The ReadiConvene
appliance combines the capabilities of the MGC+ appliance and its MGC
Manager with the ReadiManager application.
This document provides the first-time setup information you need to
install and set up the ReadiConvene appliance and ReadiManager
application.
This document includes these chapters:
Chapter 1, “Setting Up a ReadiConvene™ System,” provides information
about the physical ReadiConvene appliance and how to prepare it for use.
Chapter 2, “Configuring a ReadiConvene™ System,”describes how to
complete the First Time Setup screens with information the ReadiManager
software needs, connect the ReadiConvene appliance to your network,
change necessary configuration settings in the MGC+, and obtain
necessary licensing key codes.
Chapter 3, “System Specifications,” provides specifications about the unit.

Inspecting the Package
The ReadiConvene package includes the MGC+ unit with an installed
ReadiConvene IAM blade.
The ReadiConvene IAM upgrade package is an IAM blade that can be
installed in the MGC+ unit.

Package Contents
You should inspect the shipped box and note if it was damaged in any
way. If the box items show damage, you should file a damage claim with
the carrier who delivered it.
When deciding on a setup location for the ReadiConvene system, refer to
the section “System Safety” on page 3.

General Safety Precautions
Follow these rules to ensure general safety:
•Keep the area around the ReadiConvene appliance clean and free of
clutter.
•The MGC+50 weighs approximately 24 kg (53 lbs) and the MGC+100
weighs approximately 48 kg (106 lbs). When lifting the system, two
people at either end should lift slowly with their feet spread out to
distribute the weight. Always keep your back straight and lift with
your legs.
Rack Mount Safety Precautions
The following precautions should be followed with regards to rack mount
safety:
•Decide on a suitable location for the equipment rack that will hold the
ReadiConvene unit. It should be situated in a clean, dust-free area that
is well ventilated. Avoid areas where heat, electrical noise and
electromagnetic fields are generated. You will also need it placed near
a grounded power outlet.
•Ensure that the leveling jacks on the bottom of the rack are fully
extended to the floor with the full weight of the rack resting on them.
•In a single rack installation, stabilizers should be attached to the rack.
•In multiple rack installations, the racks should be coupled together.
•Always make sure the rack is stable before extending a component.
•You should extend only one component at a time - extending two or
more simultaneously may cause the rack to become unstable.
•Before you install the rails, determine the placement of each
component.
•Install the heaviest components on the bottom of the rack first and
then work up.
•Allow the power supply units to cool before touching them.
•Always keep the rack’s front door and all the blade’s panels and
components closed when not servicing, to maintain proper cooling.

ReadiConvene Precautions
When installing the ReadiConvene appliance, use a regulating UPS to
protect the ReadiConvene system from power surges and voltage spike
and to keep it operating in case of a power failure.
MGC+50/100 Component Locations
Figure 1-1 shows part of the front panel of the MGC+50/100. The front
panel provides access to the ReadiConvene IAM blade, the MGC+50/100
Main Control Module, Functional Modules, and Power Supply Modules.
Status LEDs on the ReadiConvene IAM, Main Control Module, Functional
Modules, and Power Supply Modules indicate the status of the system.
The ReadiConvene IAM blade is located on the left side of the appliance.

ReadiConvene IAM Front Panel
The following items appear on the ReadiConvene IAM front panel:
Figure 1-2 shows part of the rear panel of the MGC+50/100 with the
ReadiConvene IAM blade and the MGC+ Control Unit (CU) installed. I/O
cards are inserted via the rear panel. The I/O card for the ReadiConvene
IAM is located on the right side of the MGC+50/100 rear panel. In
addition, the rear panels house the main power switch, AC inlet, fans, fuse,
and additional communications ports.

ReadiConvene IAM Input/Output (I/O) Connections
The I/O card is connected to the Backplane of the ReadiConvene IAM.
This I/O card enables connections to the ReadiConvene IAM.
The following ReadiConvene IAM I/O connections are available:
•Alarms port (proprietary) - Not connected, DO NOT USE
•COM2—RS-232 port
•COM1—RS-232 port
•Keyboard and Mouse port
•VGA—VGA monitor port
•LAN—Ethernet port

Installing the ReadiConvene IAM Blade in the MGC+
Unit
This section is relevant only to MGC+ systems that are being upgraded to
the ReadiConvene by installing the ReadiConvene IAM blade.
The ReadiConvene IAM blade can be installed with the MGC+ unit ON or
OFF. Refer to Table 1-2 on page 1-9 for more detailed instructions.
It is important that you follow the sequence of steps as defined in sections
below.

the chassis. See “Installing the I/O Card for the
ReadiConvene IAM Blade” on page 11.
4 Install the ReadiConvene IAM blade. See “Inserting
the ReadiConvene IAM Blade into the MGC+ Unit” on
page 12.
5 Turn ON the Power switch on the MGC+.
ON 1 Remove the rear I/O panel and install the I/O card on
the chassis. See “Installing the I/O Card for the
ReadiConvene IAM Blade” on page 11.
2 Remove the ReadiConvene IAM front panel. See
“Removing the Blank Panel from the MGC+ Unit” on
page 10.
3 Install the ReadiConvene IAM blade. See “Inserting
the ReadiConvene IAM Blade into the MGC+ Unit” on
page 12. The ReadiConvene IAM blade automatically
starts/boots when inserted into its slot on the
backplane.
Note: If you did not follow this procedure and installed the
ReadiConvene IAM blade prior to installing the I/O card
for the ReadiConvene IAM blade, then:
1 Turn the ReadiConvene IAM OFF, by pushing the
SHUT Down button.
2 Turn the ReadiConvene IAM ON, by pushing the
SHUT Down button again.

Removing the Blank Panel from the MGC+ Unit
To remove the blank panel from the front of the MGC+ unit:
1Remove the left panel (labelled MGC+) from the front of the MGC+
unit.
2Unscrew four screws as shown in the following illustration.

When power on the MGC+ is turned ON, you must install the I/O card for the
ReadiConvene IAM card before installing the ReadiConvene IAM.

Installing the I/O Card for the ReadiConvene IAM Blade
To install the I/O card for the ReadiConvene IAM blade:
1Remove the right rear I/O cover by loosening the four screws as
shown in the following illustration.

2Remove the I/O card for the ReadiConvene IAM blade from its
package and insert it in its slot as shown in the following illustration.

3Push the I/O card firmly into the MGC+ backplane. Make sure its is
properly seated in its slot.
4Tighten the four screws that secure the I/O card to the MGC+ chassis.
5Attach the required cables or connections to the I/O card for the
ReadiConvene IAM blade.

Inserting the ReadiConvene IAM Blade into the MGC+ Unit
To insert the ReadiConvene IAM blade:
1After removing the left front panel from the MGC+ chassis, unpack
the ReadiConvene IAM blade.
2Insert the ReadiConvene IAM blade into its slot and carefully slide it
firmly into the backplane, making sure that it is properly seated in its
slot.

3Tighten the four screws, securing the ReadiConvene IAM blade to the
MGC+ chassis.
First-Time Setup Worksheet
Before you begin setup and installation of ReadiManager on the Polycom
ReadiConvene IAM blade, complete the worksheet below, filling in the
entries in the column “My System Values.” If you are not sure what values
to use, contact your IT administrator.
When power on the MGC+ is ON, the ReadiConvene IAM blade automatically
boots when it is inserted into its housing on the backplane. For more
information see Table 1-2 on page 1-10.

Setting up the System Through a Serial Port
Follow these instructions to set up your system through a serial port. If
your computer does not have a serial port, see “Setting up the System
Through a Web Interface” for instructions.
To connect a computer to the system using a serial cable
1Using a RS-232 serial cable, connect a computer to the 9-pin, serial
port labeled COM1 on the ReadiConvene appliance, and verify that
the link light for the connection is active.
2Turn on the computer and the ReadiConvene appliance.
