IntendedUse
RaymarineDSM25DigitalSounderModulesprovideechosounderdatathatcan
bedisplayedonA65MultifunctionDisplayunits.DSM25sareintendedfor
recreationaldepthfindingandfishfindingpurposes.
EchosoundersystemsrequireanappropriateRaymarinetransducerunitand
inter-connectingcable.Dependingonthetypeoftransducerconnected,the
DSM25canalsodisplaytemperature,distancetraveled,and/orspeed.
Thismanualcontainsimportantinformationforinstallingandoperatingyour
DSM25.Togetthebestresultsinoperationandperformance,pleasetakethetime
toreadthishandbookthoroughly.Raymarine’sTechnicalServicesrepresentatives
oryourlocaldealerwillbeavailabletoansweranyquestionsyoumayhave.

Thisequipmentmustbeinstalledandoperatedinaccordancewiththe
instructionscontainedinthismanual.Failuretodosocanresultinpersonalinjury

TheDSM25containshighvoltages.Adjustmentsrequire
specializedserviceproceduresandtoolsonlyavailableto
qualifiedservicetechnicians–therearenouserserviceableparts

Makesurethepowersupplyisswitchedoffbeforemakingany

WARNING: TransducerCable
Removingthetransducercablefromtherearofthesounder
modulewhileitisswitchedoncancausesparks.Onlyremovethe
transducercableafterpowerhasbeenremovedfromtheA65
displayunit,whichsuppliespowertotheDSM.Aswithany
electronicdevice,besurethesoundermoduleismountedwhereit
iswellventilatedandfreefromgasolinefumes.

IfthetransducercableisaccidentallyremovedwhiletheDSM25is
poweredon,removepowerfromthesoundermodule,replacethe
transducercable,andthenreturnpowertothemodule.Asa
safetyfeature,theDSM25onlyrecognizesthatthetransduceris
connectedatpower-up.
CAUTION: UltrasonicEnergy
Thetransducertransmitshighfrequencyenergywhileinuse.The
unitshouldbeturnedoffwhenswimmersordiversareinclose
proximitytothetransducer.(Thereisalackofscientificallysound
standardsorguidelinesforexposurelevelsandlimitsto
ultrasound.Thisnoticeisprecautionaryonly.)
EMCConformance
AllRaymarineequipmentandaccessoriesaredesignedtothebestindustry
standardsforuseintherecreationalmarineenvironment.
TheirdesignandmanufactureconformstotheappropriateElectromagnetic
Compatibility(EMC)standards,butcorrectinstallationisrequiredtoensurethat
performanceisnotcompromised.Althougheveryefforthasbeentakentoensure
thattheywillperformunderallconditions,itisimportanttounderstandwhat
factorscouldaffecttheoperationoftheproduct.
TheguidelinesgivenheredescribetheconditionsforoptimumEMCperformance,
butitisrecognizedthatitmaynotbepossibletomeetalloftheseconditionsinall
situations.ToensurethebestpossibleconditionsforEMCperformancewithinthe
constraintsimposedbyanylocation,alwaysensurethemaximumseparation
possiblebetweendifferentitemsofelectricalequipment.
ForoptimumEMCperformance,itisrecommendedthatwhereverpossible:
• Raymarineequipmentandcablesconnectedtoitare:
• Atleast5ft(1.5m)fromanyequipmenttransmittingorcablescarrying
radiosignals,e.g.,VHFradios,cablesandantennas.InthecaseofSSB
radios,thedistanceshouldbeincreasedto7 ft(2 m).
• Morethan7ft(2m)fromthepathofaradarbeam.Aradarbeamcannor-
mallybeassumedtospread20degreesaboveandbelowtheradiating
element.
• Theequipmentissuppliedfromaseparatebatteryfromthatusedforengine
start.Voltagedropsbelow10 Vandstartermotortransientscancausethe
equipmenttoreset.
Thiswillnotdamagetheequipment,butmaycausethelossofsomeinforma-
tionandmaychangetheoperatingmode.

• Raymarinespecifiedcablesareused.Cuttingandrejoiningthesecablescan
compromiseEMCperformanceandmustbeavoidedunlessdoingsois
detailedintheinstallationmanual.
SuppressionFerrites
Ifasuppressionferriteisattachedtoacable,thisferriteshouldnotberemoved.If
theferriteneedstoberemovedduringinstallationitmustbereassembledinthe
sameposition.Ifaferriteispackedseparatelyinthecarton,itmustbeinstalledas
soonasthecablesarerun.
Thefollowingillustrationshowstypicalcablesuppressionferritessometimes
usedwithRaymarineequipment.ToensureEMCcompliance,alwaysusethese
ferrites,ifsuppliedbyRaymarineforusewiththisequipment.Ifnotsuppliedby
Raymarine,aferriteisnotrequiredforusewiththisequipment.
ConnectionstoOtherEquipment
IfyourRaymarineequipmentistobeconnectedtootherequipmentusingacable
notsuppliedbyRaymarine,thesuppressionferrite(ifsupplied)MUSTalwaysbe
attachedtothecablenearesttheRaymarineunit.
ProductDisposal
Whenyouwanttodisposeofthisproductattheendofitsworkinglife,pleasedo
soinaccordancewithlocalregulations.

1.1 Introduction
ThishandbookdescribeshowtoinstalltheDSM25DigitalSounderModuleand
operateitusingtheA65displayunit.TheDSM25emitsandreceivessonarsignals
fromatransducermountedinthewater,theninterpretsandtransmitsthedatato
theA65installedontheconsole.
TheDSM25employsaveryhightransmissionrepetitionor“ping”ratewhich,
alongwiththedigitaladaptivehighsampleratereceiver,ensuresthatfishand
bottomstructurearepresentedinsuperbdetailandoptimalcolorallocation.The
DSM25digitalbandwidthadaptationadjuststhereceiverbandwidth
dynamicallyfromverywidetoverynarrow,asrequiredbytheactualwater
conditions.Thisprovidessuperiorfishandbottomdetectioninallsurroundings.
TheDSM25moduleiswaterprooftoIPX7andcanbeinstalledeitheraboveor
belowdeck.
Theunitincludesconnectionsto:
• poweranddataviatheA65
• thetransducer
TheDSM25requiresatransducer,mountedeitherthru-hull,in-hull,onthe
transomoronatrollingmotor.Transducerscanmeasurewaterdepth,andifso
equipped,temperature,distancetraveled,and/orspeed.Itisimportantto
positionyourtransducercorrectly.

1.3 HowtheFishfinderWorks
TheFishfinderapplicationusestheDSM25toprocesssonarsignalsfroma
suitabletransducerandprovideadetailedunderwaterview.
Thetransducerlocatedonthebottomoftheboatsendspulsesofsoundwaves
intothewaterandmeasuresthetimeittakesforthesoundwavetotraveltothe
bottomandback.Thereturningsoundechoesareaffectedbybottomstructure
andbyanyotherobjectsintheirpath,suchasfish,wrecks,orreefs.
ThesoundermoduleprocessestheseechoesandsendsdatatotheA65which
displaysavisualinterpretationoftheunderwaterview.Thestrengthofechoesis
indicatedonthedisplaybydifferentcolors.Youcanusethisinformationto
determinethebottomstructure,thesizeoffishandotherobjectsinthewater.

TheDSMcanoperateatafrequencyof50kHzor200kHz.
(2) SometransducerswillalsoenabletheA65todisplaywatertemperature
and/orspeed.
InterpretingtheBottomStructure
Thebottomusuallyproducesastrongecho.Theseimagesindicatethebottom
conditionsasfollows:

A hard bottom (sand) produces a thin line
A soft bottom (mud or seaweed cover) produces a wide line. The dark
layer indicates a strong signal.

A rocky or uneven bottom or a wreck produces an irregular image with
peaks and troughs

Thedarklayersindicateagoodecho;thelighterareasweakerechoes.Thiscould
meanthattheupperlayerissoftandthereforeallowingsoundwavestopassto
themoresolidlayerbelow.
Itisalsopossiblethatthesoundwavesaremakingtwocompletetrips–hitting
thebottom,bouncingofftheboat,thenreflectingoffthebottomagain.Thiscan
happenifthewaterisshallow,thebottomishard,orgainissethigh.
HowTargetsareDisplayed
Whenatargetisdetected,itisdisplayedonscreenasamark.Theshapeandsize
ofthismarkisinfluencedbyacombinationoffactors:
Boatspeed
Theshapeofthetargetchangesalongwithyourspeed.Slowerspeedsreturn
flatter,morehorizontalmarks.Asyourboat’sspeedincreases,thetargetwilltend
tothickenandarchslightlyuntilatfastspeedsthemarkresemblesadouble
verticalline.
Thedepthofthetarget
Thecloserthetargettothesurfacethelargerthemarkonscreen.
Note:
ThedepthofindividualtargetscanbedisplayedbyswitchingontheTargetDepth
IDintheFishfinderAlarmsSetupMenu.
Thesizeofthetarget
Thelargerthetarget,thelargerthereturnonthefishfinderdisplay.Thesizeofa
fishtargetishoweverdependentuponthesizeofthefish’sswimbladderrather
thanitsoverallsize.Thisswimbladderwillvaryinsizebetweendifferentbreedsof
fish.
Thefrequencyofthetransducer
Thesametargetwillappeardifferentlywhenthetransducerfrequencyis
changed.Thelowerthefrequencythebroaderthemark.

Althoughweakerthanthefishorbottomechoes,yourfishfinderpicturemaybe
impairedbyechoesreceivedfromfloatingorsubmergeddebris,airbubblesor
fromyourboat’smovements.Thisisknownasbackgroundnoiseorclutterandis
controlledbythegainmodes(gain,colorgainandTVG).Raymarinerecommends
thatyouenableyoursystemtoautomaticallycontroltheidealsensitivitylevel
basedondepthandwaterconditions.Youcanhoweveradjustthesesettings
manuallyifyouprefer.

display.
Forthesystemtodisplaydepth,watertemperatureandspeed,youmustinstall
thetransducertype(s)capableoftransmittingtheappropriatedata.
PlanningtheInstallation
Beforeyouinstallyoursystem,plantheinstallation,considering:
• Correcttransducerforyourapplication
• Locationofthesoundermodule,asdescribedinSection 2.4
2.2 UnpackingandInspectingtheComponents
Unpackyoursystemcarefully,topreventdamagetotheequipment.Savethe

TheDSM25iswaterprooftoIPX-7isandisdesignedtobemountedeitherabove
orbelowdeck.
MounttheDSM25whereitis:
• protectedfromphysicaldamageandexcessivevibration
• protectedfromprolongedexposuretorain,saltsprayanddirectsunlight
• wellventilated
• asclosetothetransduceraspossible
DonotlocatetheDSM25:
• intheenginecompartment
• onthemainconsole
Whenplanningtheinstallation,thefollowingshouldbeconsideredtoensure
reliableandtroublefreeoperation:
•Access:Theremustbesufficientspacebelowtheunittoenablecablecon-
nectionstothepanelconnectors,avoidingtightbendsinthecable.
•Interference:Theselectedlocationshouldbefarenoughawayfrom
devicesthatmaycauseinterference,suchasmotors,generators,andradio
transmitter/receivers.(See“EMCConformance“onpage 8.)
•Magneticcompass:Mounttheunitatleast3ft(1m)awayfromamagnetic
compass.
•Cableruns:TheunitmustbelocatedneartheA65display.Thecablesup-
pliedis11.5ft(3.5m)inlength.Longernetworkcablesareavailableas
describedinSection 2.3.
•Environment:Goodventilationisrequiredtopreventtheunitfromover-
heating.

2.5 MountingtheSounderModule
TheDSM25canbemountedeitheraboveorbelowdeckusingthesupplied
hardware.Toallowforeaseofcableconnection,mountthesoundermoduleso
thatthecableshangbelowtheunit.
ThefollowingfiguredisplaysdimensionsfortheDSM25.
TomounttheDSM25:
1. Holdthemoduleinthelocationwhereyouwanttomountit,makingsureitis
perpendiculartothedeck.
2. Markthelocationofthetwokeyholesontothemountingsurface.
